‘Birth’ Was So Much More Than Its Notorious Bathtub Scene [Horror Queers Podcast]
Tim Burton
The Bath Tub Scene

We spent the first half of September with discussions of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (listen) and Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All the Gifts (listen) before celebrating our 300th episode (and the start of a six-week theme on Divas/Anniversaries) with a revisit of Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body (listen). Next up: Nicole Kidman in Jonathan Glazer‘s unfairly controversial 2004 sophomore feature, Birth.

Kidman stars as Anna, a widow who is still grieving her husband’s sudden death ten years later. Despite being newly engaged to Joseph (Danny Huston), Anna upends her entire life when 10-year-old Sean (Cameron Bright) appears in her apartment, claiming to be her dead husband.

As her concerned family, including matriarch Eleanor (Lauren Bacall) and brother-in-law Bob (Arliss Howard) question the boy, new details about Anna’s marriage emerge courtesy of dead Sean’s brother Clifford (Peter Stormare) and his wife,...

15 Most Powerful Vampires In Movies & TV
Image
A handful of vampires from movies and TV shows emerge as the most powerful in all fiction due to their unique powers and invulnerabilities. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Twilight Saga, True Blood, and The Vampire Diaries dominate the vampire fantasy subgenre, as these series all feature numerous vampire characters constantly shifting between ally and enemy. However, it is clear that a select few vampires from other properties would wipe the floor with the most popular vampires from movies and TV.

Each property tends to position one or several vampires as the most powerful in their world, often due to age and specific abilities acquired over time. The basic trope of vampire mythology is that one original vampire is the ruling force in vampire society, although Twilight depicts political tension derived from conflicts between different covens and recruiting members with specific powers. They are among the minor Twilight characters the TV remake can further explore,...

Nicole Kidman’s Sexy, Sweaty ‘Babygirl’ Makes Venice Climax to 6.5-Minute Standing Ovation
Image
Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson brought sexy back to Venice Friday night at the premiere of Halina Reijn’s kinky, sex-filled “Babygirl.”

In the A24 movie, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who starts a secret affair with her new intern (Dickinson).

While not a conventional art house movie, “Babygirl” stimulated the Venice audience. As the end credits rolled on the film at the Sala Grande Theatre, the crowd erupted into a 6.5-minute standing ovation.

As the audience cheered, Kidman hugged Reijn and beamed and blushed at all the attention.

It was a sweaty night in Italy — in more ways than one. “It’s so hot,” Kidman said as she waved to fans before entering the theater earlier, on a day when temperatures crept up to 90 degrees. But “Babygirl” seemed to crank up the heat even more as the movie got underway. Kidman’s character Romy pushes the envelope in a...

Birth Ending Explained: Love, Everlasting ... Or Is It?
Image
Jonathan Glazer's "Birth" is one of the most beautifully baffling movies of the 21st century. It begins with a seemingly supernatural premise — a 10-year-old boy shows up out of the blue claiming to be the reincarnation of a soon-to-be-remarried woman's deceased husband — and builds to a climax that, depending on who you ask, is either thrillingly wide open to interpretation or catastrophically nonsensical.

Glazer spends the bulk of the film inviting us to believe that young Sean (Cameron Bright) really is the cosmically reincorporated version of an erstwhile Sean who was the love of Nicole Kidman's Anna's life. Most available evidence supports Sean's claim until Anna's best friend, Clara (Anne Heche), privately calls his bluff. She knows the kid is a fraud because Sean was in love with her, and, prior to his death, gifted her a trove of Anna's unopened love letters as proof. If the new Sean was truly dead Sean,...

How The Twilight Saga Wasted Alec’s Powers
Image
While Alec should be one of the scariest villains in the Twilight saga, the movie adaptations of the best-selling novels never delved deep enough into his disturbing powers. Twilight’s movies may have been incredibly accurate to the source novels, but the screen adaptations of the saga still inevitably needed to cut some details from the original novels for the sake of maintaining a reasonable runtime. Since many viewers were mostly interested in the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob, often, the Twilight movies cut elements such as villain backstories and other tangential information.

While Eclipse improved Twilight’s original third book plot by changing the role of Victoria, the story’s villain, 2009's New Moon was not quite so fortunate. Sticking closely to the source novel’s story, New Moon was a drab sequel that mostly focused on Edward abandoning Bella for reasons that wouldn’t be explained...

Babygirl Announce New EP, Share Origins of Dreamy New Track “Sore Eyes”: Exclusive
Image
Origins is our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Canadian duo Babygirl breaks down what inspired their new single, “Sore Eyes.”

There’s a comforting sweetness to Babygirl’s music, even in the most fraught phrases.

The Toronto duo, comprised of Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright and one of our Rising Artists to Watch for 2023, have a knack for wistful, dreamy indie pop. While their nostalgic sound recalls the warm malaise of ’90s alternative rock, the band’s lyrics strike a contemporary chord, blending sad, solitary images with moments of crystalline clarity and emotional weight.

Now, after their terrific 2021 EP Losers Weepers, Babygirl are back with “Sore Eyes,” the first single off their upcoming EP Be Still My Heart, out April 14th. The track feels apt for the transition from winter to spring, and the sweet relief of...

Sundance Review: Daina Reid’s ‘Run Rabbit Run’
Image
“Can people come back?” asks Mia, the cute little girl whose increasingly hair-raising antics are the crux of this atmospheric Midnight premiere from Australia. From the dead, she means, and it’s a macabre thought that Daina Reid’s effective but perhaps overlong debut feature film plays with quite tantalizingly, right until the end. Although the tease may wear down commercial audiences expecting to find out one way or the other, Run Rabbit Run will find favor on the arthouse and especially the festival circuit.

Like a lot of recent genre films with female leads — eg Ari Aster’s Hereditary or Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook — Reid’s film takes place in a time of fresh bereavement or recent marriage trauma. In this case, it’s both: Sarah (Sarah Snook), Mia’s mother, is dealing with her father’s death, but the hammer blow comes when her ex-husband announces that...

Luke Hicks’ Top 10 Films of 2022
Image
Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.

It was a year of unforeseen 180s. When I saw Elvis at Cannes, I thought it was awful, but I couldn’t get it out of my head. Two curiously voluntary watches later, I craved its glam-camp radiance. When 2022 began, Blonde was one of my most anticipated movies. When it ended, I’d watched 363 films, nearly 200 new ones, and only three-fourths of Blonde, a slog to end all slogs (if only). In the first three weeks of December, I watched 2-3 movies a day. In the last week, I didn’t watch anything, the longest stretch of cinemalessness I’ve endured since 2015.

Statistically, I watched ~25 more movies (~50 hours) than I did in 2021. Elvis, Eo, and JFK were my most rewatched at three times each, thwarting my yearly...

Lauren Bacall movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘The Big Sleep,’ ‘Key Largo,’ ‘Mirror Has Two Faces’
Lauren Bacall
Lauren Bacall would’ve celebrated her 94th birthday on September 16. The Hollywood icon showed no signs of slowing down, continuing to work until her death in 2014 at the age of 89. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Bacall made her feature debut with Howard Hawks‘ adventure yarn “To Have and Have Not” (1945). The film was a landmark for the actress in both her career and her life, since it was how she met her future husband Humphrey Bogart. The two would become a legendary couple off-screen and on, making three subsequent features together: “The Big Sleep” (1946), “Dark Passage” (1947), and “Key Largo” (1948).

Despite her hefty filmography, Bacall received just one Oscar nomination in her career: Best Supporting Actress for “The Mirror Has Two Faces” (1996), in which she played Barbra Streisand‘s domineering mother. After victories at the Golden Globes and SAG,...

The Best Child Performances in Movie History — IndieWire Critics Survey
Brooklynn Prince in The Florida Project (2017)
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In honor of “The Florida Project,” which has just started its platform release across the country, what is the greatest child performance in a film?

Jordan Hoffman (@JHoffman), The Guardian, Vanity Fair

I can agonize over this question or I can go at this Malcolm Gladwell “Blink”-style. My answer is Tatum O’Neal in “Paper Moon.” She’s just so funny and tough, which of course makes the performance all the more heartbreaking. She won the freaking Oscar at age 10 for this and I’d really love to give a more deep cut response, but why screw around? Paper Moon is a perfect film and she is the lynchpin.

Stargate Sg-1: 10 great guest performances
Juliette Harrisson Jan 31, 2017

We salute 10 memorable guest roles on Stargate Sg-1, featuring Seth, The Keeper and more...

As with our previous features, this is a list designed to celebrate the very best performances by guest actors in Stargate Sg-1. However, we did come across a couple of challenges in compiling the list for this particular series. We’ve defined ‘guest performance’ as an actor playing a character who is not a regular or recurring character – so the actor must have played the character no more than twice in this particular series (though they may have appeared more often in other branches of the franchise). Stargate Sg-1 liked to re-use its best guest characters as often as possible, frequently bringing back characters like Claudia Black’s Vala Mal Doran after what was initially a one-off appearance, which is great as the audience get to enjoy them again, but seriously reduces the number of eligible performances.

Frightfest 2015: ‘Final Girl’ Review
Stars: Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, Alexander Ludwig, Logan Huffman, Cameron Bright | Written by Adam Prince, Stephen Scarlata, Alejandro Seri, Johnny Silver | Directed by Tyler Shields

Each and every year a Frightfest there always seems to be an overriding theme that ties a lot of the films screeening there – be they in the main or discovery screens. This year the theme, at least from the films I’ve seen so far, would seem to be strong women. Be it the strong women that take charge of proceedings in films like The Sand, Stung and Night of the Living Deb or the strong “final girls” in films like Last Girl Standing and this, Final Girl.

Directed by professional photographer Tyler Shields, Final Girl tells the story of Veronica who, after her parents are murdered as a young girl, is groomed by a mysterious mentor to become a lethal assassin, her sights...

Abigail Breslin Turns the Tables in Final Girl
Abigail Breslin is sure turning into a genre actress lately. It seems like after Zombieland, I’ve seen her in more & more genre films like Haunter, The Call and Maggie. She is also going to appear on Fox’s upcoming genre television show, “Scream Queens”.

Final Girl is a film that I believe I saw a promo trailer earlier this year or maybe even last year and thought it looked interesting. The story also comes from Stephen Scarlata, who was one of the producers of the wonderful documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune. He is also one of the co-writers of the upcoming VHS Horror Board Game film, Beyond the Gates.

Los Angeles, CA – Renowned photographer to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Tyler Shields will captivate audiences with his debut feature film, the “sardonic, smart, stylized, thriller” (Dennis Dermody, Paper), Final Girl. Nicole Kidman in Birth (2004)

Playing a widow who gradually comes to believe her deceased husband has been reincarnated into a young child (Cameron Bright), Kidman expertly charts her characters mental evolution from stubborn disbelief to tempestuous acceptance, making it that much harder for the viewer to figure out the truth beneath the surface. All you need to do is watch this astonishing long take of Kidman's Anna wrestling with the reality of her situation while at the opera to see why "Birth" will always be considered one of her best. As the criminal investigation progresses, details of what led to the crime are revealed via flashbacks. Watch: Abigail Breslin Gets Hunted In Trailer For 'Final Girl'
The first thing you should know about Tyler Shields — making his directorial debut with "Final Girl" — is that he's a photographer by day, and kind of a poor man's Terry Richardson (though given the current heavy controversy around the latter, Shields may have new gigs available to him). Just look at this photo shoot he did with Abigail Breslin, the star of his film. But hey, credit to Shields, he has managed to do something Richardson hasn't — make a movie. It's just too bad it doesn't look very good. Wes Bentley, Cameron Bright and Francesca Eastwood are among the co-stars of this one, about a bunch of teenage boys who kill girls for sport. But the tables are turned when they choose Veronica, because she's secretly an assassin-in-training, and she's made the gang of boys as her final test. Yeesh. Premise aside, it looks like Shields basically shot like his photos,...

Motive: Season Three Renewal in Canada; Will ABC Air It?
Here in the states, the Motive TV show can hardly be called a ratings success. However, it's doing well enough in Canada for CTV to renew it for a third season. Production resumes this fall.

As the criminal investigation progresses, details of what led to the crime are revealved via flashbacks. The rest of the cast includes Louis Ferreira, Lauren Holly, Roger Cross, Brendan Penny, and Cameron Bright.

Though last summer's ratings weren't very good, ABC picked up the 13 episodes of season two and they started airing last week. Season two's ratings have been even worse and it's currently the network's lowest-rated summer show.

3 Reasons You Need to Watch Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Birth’ This Week
It’s a little too early to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Birth, a movie where “10 years later” has significance, but I’d like to get started on paying commemorative tribute to Jonathan Glazer‘s 2004 masterpiece for a few reasons. Each of these reasons is actually a new movie with some relevance to Birth, and while that makes it sound like the earlier movie is something so ahead of its time that it fits better among the output of 2014, the pertinence is mostly a coincidence. The first reason/movie, however, is rather obvious. Glazer’s first feature since Birth is currently in theaters, and it couldn’t be any more worth the wait. Outside of both movies beginning with a kind of natal moment for a main character and the way they could be aesthetically connected, reverse-sequentially, through snow-filled settings, there’s little similarity between the movies. The new one, Under the Skin...

The Definitive Kubrickian Films: 40-31
As we spend a month looking at the great Stanley Kubrick, we can also look at the filmmakers who were clearly influenced by Kubrick. “Kubrickian” films tend to exercise incredible control of the camera, are extremely ambitious, tend to deal with much weightier themes, and always maintain a sense of mystery, like a there’s an invisible fog always hovering over the film. This list could be sharply focused on about five directors working today but, though a number of these filmmakers appear in this list of 40, we’re spreading the wealth a bit. Let’s get to it.

40. Watchmen (2009)

Directed by Zack Snyder

What makes it Kubrickian? It’s surprisingly cold and detail-oriented, unlike most of Zack Snyder’s other work (well, detail-oriented in a positive way). Watchmen is based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by David Gibbons and Alan Moore, about a desolate alternative...

Motive: Season Two Pick Up from ABC
ABC has picked up the second season of Motive, their summer police procedural series. The next 13 episodes will air next summer.

The series debuted on ABC last May and the 13 episodes averaged just a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.96 million total viewers. The series hit a low of a 0.7 rating with 3.95 million in early August but the numbers grew after that.

TV Review: ABC Gives Canadian ‘Motive’ to Mystery Fans
Chicago – I know — Another mystery show, right? When do we grow tired of mystery after mystery? Other cultures have to be amazed at our obsession with murder and the people who solve crimes. While I feel no genre is more glutted with filler than this one, ABC’s “Motive,” an import from Canada a la “Rookie Blue” and “Flashpoint,” isn’t half bad. It has a strong cast and decent mystery plotting. My exhaustion with shows like this hurts the program overall but if you’re into mystery shows, you could do a lot worse.

Television Rating: 3.0/5.0

Daniel Cerone, the executive producer of “Dexter” and “The Mentalist,” delivers “Motive,” a show built around a nice hook that keeps viewers engaged through the episode. In the very first scenes, you see a person labeled victim and one labeled killer. In the two episodes available for press, how these two people would...

Twilight Author's Latest Movie Gets Lambasted by U.S. Critics
Latest adaptation of a bestselling Meyer novel has received atrocious ratings on the review-aggregator web site Rotten Tomatoes "Dopey, derivative and dull, The Host is a brazen combination of unoriginal science-fiction themes, young-adult pandering and bottom-line calculation," says New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis. And Dargis' opinion is one of the kinder ones that U.S. critics have written about Andrew Niccol's mix of romance, adventure, and science-fiction, starring Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons, and Jake Abel, and co-produced by the author of the novel on which the film is based (Niccol himself is credited for the adapation): Stephenie Meyer, best known as the brain behind the Twilight Saga literary and cinematic franchises. (Pictured above: Ronan, a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee back in early 2008, and co-star Abel) Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Twilight Saga? Blu Review: Earth's Final Hours
If you've seen one SyFy Channel Original Movie, then you know what to expect from all of them. The simple formula consists of a couple of familiar television or genre actors, some type of otherworldly threat or attack, and some budget special effects that aren't quite as bad as what we get with The Asylum's movies. However, they still don't quite live up to the expectations set forth by years of watching films crafted with the help of Ilm.

Earth's Final Hours is no different except for a premise that isn't quite as hard to swallow as an alien attack or over-used as a giant asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Don't get me wrong; matter from an asteroid figures into the story. It's just not the size we're used to from years of movies like Meteor, Armageddon, and Deep Impact.

The dense matter from a white hole in...

Should children be allowed to act in harrowing films?
Oliwia Dabrowska has spoken of her 'years of trauma and shame' after her role in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. How have other child actors reacted to their roles in disturbing movies – and how do directors protect them?

The movie industry has a bag of tricks to get children to do what a director wants, from opening up a present to get that "excited" reaction shot, to telling the kid their dog has died to wring out the tears. The latter is frowned upon these days, though it still works on many grownup actors. But what if the child is in a movie they would be way too young to watch?

The issue resurfaced recently when Oliwia Dabrowska recounted how her role as the totemic Girl in the Red Coat in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List had "led to years of trauma and shame". Not because of the experience itself,...

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 Blu-Ray Review
There are many challenges associated with wrapping up a franchise with a fanbase large enough to warrant its own quirky name, but The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 delivered on them. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg was able to stay within the confines set by the established story while at the same time using her creative license to give audiences something they didn’t expect, all without antagonizing fans of the series.

Picking up exactly where Breaking Dawn – Part 1 left off, Part 2 showcases Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) adjustment to vampire life, revealing that both in life and death she possesses unexplainable mental abilities. The only ”normal” side effect of this transition we are privy to is her supernatural strength, which exceeds even the strongest Cullen, Emmett (Kellan Lutz). A talent which consistently amuses and humbles her husband, Edward (Robert Pattinson). For the first time in the series we see Bella as more than simply the damsel-in-distress.

Cameron Bright (Alec of the Volturi in the Twilight Saga) is featured in the so-called first film by famed photographer Tyler Shields titled "Final Girl." Bright is the latest in a string of Twilight stars who've appeared in Shield's vids, including Edi Gathegi (Laurent in Twilight), Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen) and Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen), and just like the videos they've all appeared in, the movie is incredibly bizarre. That's Tyler Shield's thing, though. The Hunger Games stars Wes Bentley and Alexander Ludwig along with Abigail Breslin, Logan Huffman, Reece Thompson and Francesca Eastwood also appear in the video. ABC Picks Up Canadian Thriller Drama ‘Motive’ For Summer
After swiftly scrapping planned summer drama series Weird Desk last month, ABC has picked up another original drama for next summer, Canadian import Motive, from former Dexter and The Mentalist exec producer Daniel Cerone. The 13-episode CTV series focuses not on who did the crime, but why the crime was committed in the first place. The killer and victim are identified at the beginning of each episode, with the crime then explored via stylized flashbacks which piece together the connection between the two characters and what drove the killer to commit murder. In Canada, the series will premiere in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this Sunday. Motive stars Kristin Lehman (The Killing), Louis Ferreira (Rookie Blue), Lauren Holly (NCIS), Roger Cross (Arrow), Brendan Penny and Cameron Bright. The series was created by Cerone who executive produces with Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob Labelle, Lindsay Macadam and James Thorpe.

BD2 to Surpass The Avengers at Brazil's 2012 Box Office?
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Breaking Dawn Part 2 to become Brazil’s top-selling movie in 2012? Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn Part 2 is a major blockbuster worldwide, having grossed more than $600m in less than two weeks. Now, relatively speaking, among the world’s top film markets no country has embraced the Twilight movie franchise’s final installment as ardently as Brazil. (Photo: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.) Breaking Dawn Part 2 has already shattered Brazilian single-day and opening-weekend box-office records — in ticket sales. In other words, inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges don’t play a role here. In Us dollars, Brazil — with $33.61m — is currently Breaking Dawn Part 2‘s third biggest international market, trailing only the United Kingdom ($43.25m) and Russia / Cis ($36.27m). By the end of its opening weekend, Breaking Dawn Part 2 was already the seventh highest-grossing 2012 release at the Brazilian box office.
