The first episode of Paramount+’s 1923 introduced a new generation of Duttons on the Yellowstone Ranch in Montana, as well as one Dutton who prefers the life of hunting maneaters in Africa. Episode two, “Nature’s Empty Throne,” also divides its time between the Yellowstone Ranch and Africa, as well as a government boarding school for Native Americans in North Dakota.

Since there are three distinct storylines taking place, this recap is divided up into three parts to make it easier to track the key players. (Spoilers ahead!)

1923 star Brian Geraghty explains how Zane made his bond with the Duttons. The second Yellowstone prequel created by Taylor Sheridan premiered on Paramount+ on December 18 and follows a different generation of the Dutton family during a period of extensive hardships brought on by the turn of the century. Early in the series debut, audiences were reminded of the family portrayed in 1883 and introduced to Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), as well as growing concerns over droughts, locust infestations, and Prohibition. Geraghty plays Zane Davis, 1923's version of Rip Wheeler, a ranch hand who appears loyal to the Duttons and accompanies Jacob and others on a cattle drive in the first episode.

1923 presents a number of new characters, and while audiences can assume more of Zane will be explored as the series progresses, Geraghty is sharing some insight regarding his close relationship with the Duttons. In an interview with TV Insider,...

The fiercely loyal ranch foreman of 1923, Zane Davis, was described to Brian Geraghty as the Yellowstone prequel’s Rip Wheeler. When asked by TV Insider if there is anything Zane wouldn’t do for Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) and their family, the answer was a swift “no.” “He would do whatever he has to do, and sometimes he may not even agree with it,” the Chicago P.D. alum says. “He’ll challenge it a little bit, but when Jake or Cara says ‘This is what we’re doing,’ it’s like, Ok, head down, let’s go to work.” Zane isn’t related to the Duttons by blood, but just like Cole Hauser‘s Rip, he’s family. The story of Yellowstone gets another chapter with 1923, which premieres December 18 on Paramount+. The latest prequel series from Taylor Sheridan returns once more to the earlier years of Dutton Ranch, this time four decades after the events of 1883. Between famine and economic hardship—not to mention internal strife among the family members themselves—the current generation of Duttons have their work cut out for them in the early 20th century.

1923 stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, who arrived after James' death in order to take care of the family ranch and his remaining progeny.
