It seems there’s no way forward for Prince Harry and King Charles III. An expert says the father-son relationship is “terminally damaged,” after they didn’t meet during the Duke of Sussex’s trip to London, England, for the Invictus Games’ 10-year anniversary. Ahead, what would happen between Harry and his dad “in a sensible world.” Plus, how there’s been a complete role reversal.
A spokesperson for Harry confirmed he wouldn’t see King Charles while in London
Harry touched down in London, England, to mark 10 years of the Invictus Games with a bang. A rep for the Duke of Sussex confirmed on May 7, 2024, that Harry and his father would have no U.K. meeting.
“It, unfortunately, will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full programme,” Harry’s spokesperson said (via ABC News). “The Duke, of course, is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments...

It seems like so long ago now that royal fans lined the streets of Windsor and millions more from around the world tuned in to watch Britain’s Prince Harry and American actor Meghan Markle tie the knot. Many royal watchers were so excited about Meghan joining England’s most famous family. But within two years of becoming a working royal, the duke and duchess decided to quit that life and moved to the U.S.
While there have been several theories out there about why they chose to leave, one royal biographer believes Meghan had a plan all along and never had any intention of being a “hard-working” member of the royal family.

When Meghan Markle joined the royal family, her integration came with a vision of residence that would challenge royal protocol. Her solitary request, in the wake of matrimonial bliss with Prince Harry, was met with discretion and deemed unfit by Queen Elizabeth II.
The notion of royal accommodation carries with it centuries of tradition and unspoken rules. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex navigated their new life, their aspirations for a home within the historic Windsor Castle clashed with the expectations of royal residence etiquette.
Queen Elizabeth thought this request from Meghan Markle was ‘inappropriate’
Harry and Meghan officially received Frogmore Cottage following their May wedding in 2018. Comprised of 10 chambers, the estate is located inside the grounds of Windsor Castle.
According to Express, Harry and Meghan harbored aspirations to settle within the grander confines of the royal estate after their nuptials. But Queen Elizabeth politely informed them of the impracticality of their request.

Members of the royal family meet and greet a lot of people on a daily basis. But the most senior members of the Firm who are so busy with engagements and visits have to have a way to end conversations when they need to move along.
The late Queen Elizabeth II had a discreet way of doing just that. She used a specific signal which let her aides know she was done talking and to come get her. Now that King Charles III is the monarch, he too has a gesture to let staffers know it’s time to rescue him from a conversation. Here’s the secret signal Charles sends when he wants to get out of the conversation as well as what his mother did in those situations.

Kate Middleton could help guests swerve an “awkward” moment at King Charles III’s coronation. According to a royal expert, women who may feel “uncomfortable” about wearing a tiara to the ceremony could avoid it altogether depending on the Princess of Wales’ headpiece choice. Specifically, if Kate forgoes a tiara for a reportedly more “egalitarian touch.”

Days before his coronation, a new documentary is looking back at the life of King Charles III. Charles: In His Own Words premieres Friday, April 28 on National Geographic. The one-hour special traces the king’s life over the past seven decades, exploring his privileged childhood as the future monarch, his years at boarding school, his tumultuous marriage to Princess Diana, and more. It also looks at his initial relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles and why, despite their feelings for each other, she was deemed an unsuitable bride for the future king.
Prince Charles faced intense pressure to choose a proper bride
In the mid-1970s, Charles was facing pressure to marry and have children. Choosing a woman to be his wife wasn’t a decision he took lightly.

Future king Prince George will reportedly break a longstanding royal tradition to help honor the day when King Charles’ coronation rolls around. The event commemorates the ascension of a new monarch and head for the Church of England, even though Charles is already king.
Sources say coronation planners are still determining how much of a role, or what kind of a role, young George will take. But if their reports are accurate, he might create a new precedent for anyone second, or even first, in line to the throne to follow.

Further details of the King’s Coronation ceremony have been revealed, with King Charles’s nine-year-old grandson Prince George set for a bigger role than had been anticipated – in a break with royal precedent.
The Times reports that Charles and Queen Camilla are both keen that George, as a future king, be given a prominent role, while not exposing him to excessive scrutiny at his young age.
Royal historian Hugo Vickers tells the Times:
“Bringing George in also sends all the right symbolism for the future and gives him something he will always remember. It is certainly different — this coronation is getting more interesting by the minute.”
In addition, Queen Camila’s grandchildren – the King’s step-grandchildren – will also be given prominent official roles in the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, to take place on May 6.

Prince Philip was allegedly looking into suing Netflix over a scene in “The Crown” season 2.
Royal historian Hugo Vickers told The Sunday Times that Philip wasn’t happy with a false storyline surrounding the death of his sister Princess Cecilie.
She passed away in a plane crash in 1937 at age just 26 alongside her newborn baby, husband and two young sons.
In the second season of the show, that aired in 2017, Cecilie had been flying from Germany to London to help her then-16-year-old brother Philip, who was in trouble at school.
According to the New York Post, Philip’s father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, blamed Philip for the deaths at her funeral on the show.
Prince Andrew said as they laid Cecilie to rest in season 2, “I’m surprised he dare show himself here. Had it not been for Philip and his indiscipline she would never have taken that flight.

Season five of Netflix's "The Crown" is notably tackling the highs and lows of the royal family throughout the 1990s. Prominent events like Princess Diana's romance with Dodi Fayed and the queen's "annus horribilis" declaration in 1992 are just some royal highlights that dominate the show, and yet lesser known stories and people involved with the royal family have also made their way to the spotlight.
Episode three of the season, titled "Mou Mou," is dedicated to Sydney Johnson, a person who viewers might have briefly spotted in "The Crown"'s season three episode "Dangling Man" as the former King Edward VIII, later known as the Duke of Windsor, was on his death bed. In real life, Johnson served the duke for over 30 years and was a treasured member of his royal staff until the duke's death in 1972.

You can always expect to see Queen Elizabeth with her trademark white gloves, her giant brooches, and her brightly colored jackets and matching hats. But one detail you might not have noticed: her always-present handbag. We already know why the queen can often be found decked out in eye-catching shades of fuchsia, lemon, and royal blue for engagements, but what's with the purse? With all of the royals attendants she has, you would think someone else could hold her bag. Believe it or not, there's a reason Queen Elizabeth is spotted with her patent top-handle bag as often as she steps out in her favorite Anello & Davide block heels: she uses her bag to give discreet signals to her staff members.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their first child on May 6, and much is sure to be said about the queen's eighth great-grandchild, especially when you consider the fact that Meghan and Harry's little boy will be making royal history.
Meghan and Harry's child will be the first British-American baby born into the royal family. Though Meghan formally applied for British citizenship after her engagement to Harry in late 2017, it wasn't approved before the baby arrived - Meghan needs to live in the UK continuously for five years before she can apply for an "indefinite leave to remain." Renouncing citizenship from a country can be a pretty tricky process, and it's still unknown whether Meghan plans to keep her American status.

With her embellished hats and vibrant clothing, it's nearly impossible to miss Queen Elizabeth when she's out and about. But there is one thing about the royal's public appearances that you may have missed: the fact that she always carries a black Launer handbag. Though it may seem like she just needs a place to stash a few items, royal historian Hugo Vickers once revealed to People that the monarch actually uses her purse — she's said to have owned over 200 of the same style over the years — to convey secret messages to her staff. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "It would be very worrying if you were talking to the Queen and saw the handbag move from one hand to the other,” he said, explaining that the gesture means that she wants her staff to usher her away. As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot, all eyes are on the bride and the long-awaited reveal of her wedding gown. But there's one other area royal watchers are also interested in: the groom's facial hair. Harry, who served two tours of Afghanistan, is wearing his military uniform for his wedding today, just as his brother, Prince William, did at his 2011 nuptials to Kate Middleton. But army rules dictate that grooms who marry in uniform should, technically, be clean-shaven. "He's not able to wear his Royal Horse Guards uniform with a beard," English journalist Hugo Vickers told the Press Association. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) But Harry clearly broke that rule! The 33-year-old is sporting a full beard for his royal nuptials today — and we must say, he looks quite handsome! Believe it or not, the beloved royal has worn a military dress coat in public with a beard before.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are engaged! While Clarence House confirmed that the pair are set to wed in Spring 2018, there are a few complexities when it comes to the big day.
Not since Edward VIII famously abdicated the throne to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson in 1936 has an heir to the throne wed an American — and like Simpson, Markle is divorced. But a lot has changed in the decades since then, and Harry and Meghan are facing a far more relaxed monarchy. What’s more, their wedding won’t be a carbon copy of Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s elaborate 2011 nuptials.

When Stephen starts a field piece in anything tweed, you know it’s going to be classic. Also, was it just me, or was Stephen’s “Stiff upper lip” almost identical to his impression of Jerri Blank? Let’s keep in mind, Ladies of the C-Section, that this is a family blog, so let’s keep the discussion of Stephen’s stiffy to a minimum. Unlike Stephen’s stiffy. But I digress. Hugo Vickers was such a perfect companion to “Stephen”, both playing along with his silliness, and treating him like a child when he was acting like one. It was both hysterical and endearing. Also? Stephen’s rocking of the no-glasses ascot look is love.

In honor of Kate Middleton and Prince William's upcoming wedding, Stephen Colbert got lessons in English table manners on 'The Colbert Report' (Weeknights, 11:30Pm Et on Comedy Central) from royal expert Hugo Vickers.
The two sat down to a proper English table setting for tea and biscuits. As one could imagine, things digressed rather quickly.
Colbert gargled his tea, like he was tasting wine. He also spit, stirred sloppily, held his tea cup wrong, and at one point drank the cream on the table straight out of its jar.

On April 29, Kate Middleton's wedding dress will be the most talked-about article of clothing on the planet. But what about her groom's outfit? Prince William may have a new choice for his own wedding attire - and it's a real eye-catcher. The prince, 28, has been named Colonel of the Irish Guards in the British Army, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday, and experts are suggesting that he may wear the ceremonial uniform for the Colonels: a grand-looking scarlet-colored jacket and black trousers with piping to match the jacket. Photos: British Royals: The Next GenerationUp until now, it had been widely speculated that...

Bow down to the King's Speech
Few could have forseen just how warm the embrace for Tom Hooper's royalish biopic would be – both from the critics and the public. Last weekend, as Charles Gant revealed, a whopping 1.1m of us went to the flicks in the UK alone, mostly to see Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. But just how good is it? Here's Peter Bradshaw and Philip French's reviews. And what about its accuracy? Hugo Vickers, who served as an advisor on the film, gave his take on Monday, while on Thursday our resident Reel historian, Alex von Tunzelmann gave it a comprehensive scan for historical flaws. It also prompted blogs on why the UK film industry still seems so keen to sell us Brits as stiff upper lipped aristos, and...

Hugo Vickers, royal adviser on the film The King's Speech
My view is that a film is a film, and you have to move the drama on. People can say, for example, that Churchill didn't play nearly as big a role as he does in the film – he wasn't actually there at such and such a point, he never uttered those words, and so on. But the average viewer knows who Churchill is; he doesn't know who Lord Halifax and Lord Hoare are. I don't mind these things at all.
Of course, when the king made his famous speech after Chamberlain had declared war on Germany, none of those high-ranking officials who appear with him in the film were present. But they need to speak to the king, there's a point that needs to be made.
It's the essence of the story that counts, and the essence of the story here is very sound indeed.

As The King’s Speech arrives in cinemas, we met with director Tom Hooper and star Colin Firth to chat about the film…
Anticipation for The King's Speech has been steadily building since its premiere back in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. There, it won the coveted Audience Award and later in the year it swept the British Independent Film Awards, and now, at the start of the new year, it is tipped for Golden Globe, Oscar and BAFTA success.
We're not surprised, what with the film filling many awards fodder prerequisites, being a period-set character drama that brings together themes of monarchy, disability and even a hint of World War 2 under the yoke of a brilliant cast, as Colin Firth's Prince Albert (and soon-to-be King George VI) consults unconventional speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) for help with his stammer.

Obviously, there will be plenty of famous faces, fashion and fanfare to ogle when Prince William marries Kate Middleton on April 29. But there's also something far more subtle - but equally fascinating - to watch for on the big day, as well as in the months leading up to it. In the course of royal affairs, the Queen, along with others in the family, use some little-known secret cues in their social dealings. First and foremost, when Her Majesty is ready to wrap up a conversation or social event, she switches her handbag from one arm to another, signaling her...

It all began when an unsolicited script was plopped on Geoffrey Rush's doorstep in suburban Melbourne, Australia."It turned out that this woman who was looking after it from a fringe theater group in London, her sister or best friend lived two streets away from me," says the actor. "Against all natural protocol of going through agents, they were desperate to get the story to me. I found it fascinating." He's speaking of "The King's Speech," the new Weinstein Co. film, which was a play by David Seidler at the time. The story revolves around a real episode in British history. As King George V was fading in health and Europe was on the brink of war, his son Edward, the heir to the throne, had no desire to become king, because it would mean not being able to marry his true love, the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Edward's brother George,...
