The defender played for England in the FIFA World Cup of 1990 and the
UEFA European Championships of 1992 and 1996.
Usually an expert penalty taker, he infamously missed a vital penalty
which helped knock his country out of the semifinals of the 1990 World
Cup.
Took two penalties and scored both for England in the 1996 European
Championship, in the quarter-final shootout against Spain and in the
semi-final shootout against Germany, finally relieving the pain of his
penalty miss in 1990.
He was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire)
in the 1999 Queen's New Years Honors List for his services to
sports.
