Interviewed by Jessie Lilley
And just what is a “Renaissance Man” anyway? No, I’m not referring to the Voyager episode and I’m also not talking about the Penny Marshall film. In this context, the term Renaissance Man is defined as a person who excels at many different endeavors: the guy can do a lot of stuff and he does it all quite well. Such a one is the subject of this interview.
Larry Blamire first came across my radar when he and I were both living in Hollywood. I was at a private screening in the home of a friend of mine and he rolled a film called The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. I was transfixed. What a delightful way to spend some time; laughing yourself silly. I immediately found a way to contact this man as I wanted to know what makes him tick.
It’s now years later and,...

“I hold your hand in my dear, I press it to my lips.
take a healthy bite from your dainty fingertips…”
I Hold Your Hand in Mine
—Tom Lehrer
Such are the thoughts of this horror fan when Valentine’s Day arrives.
Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. It is beginning to take hold in other countries, as well. Statistics claim that 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. Perhaps all this romanticism—which doesn’t sit well with many men—is the reason for some of the fairly gruesome viewing available to horror fans.
Take, for instance, My Bloody Valentine (1981), celebrating the first Valentine’s Day party in 20 years, even though Harry had said no more Valentine’s Day celebrations in the town. When this party happens, Harry starts killing the revelers. And leave us not forget...

Start By Learning The Craft

For decades, Monster Kids have dreamed of making the ultimate horror film and going down in history as being “The Great Horror Film Maker of All Time”. From 8 mm to Digital HD, kids the world over make monster movies in the back yard or in the local graveyard. How many of them go on to Tinsel Town? More than you’d imagine! But – how many succeed?
Very few. Those who do have usually pursued their dreams of film making by learning how to do it right. As with any art, there are ways, tried and true, that cannot be argued with, but if you don’t take the time to learn them you’re bound to fail time and again. So if you really want it, if the dream is the force that drives you, then take our advice and find a...

I hate writing notices like this, especially when the person in question was a friend of long-standing. I knew Ingrid had been ill for many years, but she always bounced back. This time though, it was not to be. According to the BBC, Miss Pitt had collapsed a couple of days ago and was rushed to a hospital in London, where she breathed her last. I’ll say it was the last thing I expected to learn when I woke this morning.
Ingrid’s many roles included the one which made her a Hammer Icon: that of Mircalla Karnstein in The Vampire Lovers. She was directed in this film by Roy Ward Baker whom we lost this past October. Her favorite though, as she told me, was the role of Countess Elisabeth Nodosheen in Countess Dracula. Ingrid was very proud of the sexuality she brought to the films she made with Hammer,...

The 2010 edition of the San Diego Comic Con International exploded on the scene July 22nd, as colorful and spectacular as the nightly fireworks display over the city’s Sea World park, threatening to burst the fortress-like walls of the San Diego convention center as over 126,000 fans packed the building and Famous Monsters of Filmland was there in the heat of the action!
Little could Comic Con founder Shel Dorf have imagined that the convention would grow to such monstrous proportions when he organized “The Golden State Comic Con” in the basement of the U.S. Grant Hotel back in 1970. Comic books are still the heart and soul of Comic Con, but over the years as the convention has grown, it has embraced related media like magazines, toys and Hollywood, itself, where the studios roll out news about their big, upcoming titles. And the late, founding Editor of...

The new era of Famous Monsters of Filmland officially launched July, 2010 with a gathering of fans at Indianapolis’ Wyndham Indianapolis West hotel and the debut of the all-new FM #251. FM spoke to fans, celebs and volunteers to help write this (Cyclopean) eye-witness report.
Friday July 9
Publisher Phil Kim, FM magazine editor Jessie Lilley, editor-in-chief Michael Heisler, and a host of staff members begin their day before 7:00 a.m. to make the final preparations for the first time convention of the new FM. They are all aware that they have high expectations to meet. A large and successful horror convention had been held in Indianapolis in March, and they will be compared to a wide variety of horror-related conventions held around the country, as well as being judged against memories of previous Famous Monsters conventions in past decades by earlier owners of the famous name. At the same time as the FM con,...

Hello, monster mavens. Let me introduce myself to all you cognescenti of the creepy.
I’m Max Cheney, better known by my onscreen moniker of “The Drunken Severed Head.” I’ve been given some space here to write about many things: the intersection of the screen and the scream, the mad monsters of movies and magazines, the art of alternate worlds and the dark denizens of the diabolic. In short, if it’s something that belongs in the dark, I’ll talk about it here. I’ve been taking a cockeyed look at such stuff for over three years at my blog (the winner of a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award, he said modestly), and now I’m happy to have more corners to explore at Famous Monsters.
If you want to know more about me (and perhaps you’re just strange enough to), I was interviewed for Famous Monsters,...

The staff of Famous Monsters of Filmland is pleased to announce the arrival of Jessie Lilley to its ranks as Editor.
As a publisher and editor of small press magazines for over 20 years, Jessie brings an impressive wealth of experience to the pages of FM, and has already had an immediate effect on the production of #251, the relaunch issue scheduled for release in July. “I asked Jessie to write a piece for #251, and over the course of our discussions I think we both slowly realized that she had a lot to offer on the other side of the desk as well,” said FM Editor in Chief Michael Heisler. “We danced around the topic until, ultimately, her first achievement as Editor was to hire herself! Seriously, Jessie has joined us as we’re heading into the home stretch of putting FM #251 together, and we couldn’t be happier to have her aboard.

Jim Warren worked with Forest J Ackerman since 1958 and they founded Famous Monsters of Filmland together. They last appeared in public at this summer's Comic-Con International but Warren flew west to see him one final time this month. He provided us with the following:
Forrest J. Ackerman was in a class by himself. You don't have to tell this to anyone who knew him or his work. You don't have to tell anyone Babe Ruth was a great hitter.
Our fifty-year relationship was also in a class by itself. I found Forry Ackerman the man was every bit as interesting as Forry ackerman the talent. Now he's gone. But the talent still lives. The words he wrote for Warren Publishing will be read and savored for as long as memory and words exist.
The King is dead. No other King can take his place.
Harry Knowles, Ain’t it Cool...
