When Nutan Slapped Sanjeev Kumar(Photo Credit –zee5/Shemaroo/Facebook)
Nutan was one of those actresses who always let her work speak for herself. She is still celebrated as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema. Looking back at the true story of the writer and the brilliant film Staying Alive with director and lead player Anant Mahadevan.
Screenwriter Sujit Sen, who died unsung in 2005, was the subject of Anant Mahdevan’s Staying Alive. “It was the story of a journalist, played by me, who has had three heart attacks and is back in hospital where he encounters a gangster, played by Sourabh Shukla, in the next bed. These are incidents that actually happened in Sujit’s life. It’s sad that he’s gone before Staying Alive could be released. As a dear friend, I’d have liked to have it released before his death… Sujit Sen was like a father figure, brilliant but broken by the blitzkrieg of callousness in Bollywood.”
Apparently, Sujit, who wrote Mahesh Bhatt’s best films Arth and Saraansh, never quite survived the break with the filmmaker. Anant shrugs off...

Go language-specific, go cheap and go hyper-local to reap success appears to be the playbook of a range of streamers operating across South Asia.
With countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan, South Asia is a vast region populated by 1.9 billion people speaking a welter of languages. It is no secret that people in the region prefer consuming content in their own tongues. The narrative around streamers in South Asia is understandably around the existing market-leading global streamers such as Disney Plus Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, with an air of expectancy around the impending launches of HBO Max and Apple TV Plus.
The majority of the local programming among the bigger streamers and their competitors including SonyLIV, Lionsgate Play, ALTBalaji, ZEE5, Voot and ErosNow is in Hindi, an Indian language that is consumed around the region thanks to the soft power of Bollywood. It...

The film or entertainment industry as it has grown into, is going through one change after another. This column has looked into the fate of multiplexes and other cinema screens, the star system and the way the films are made following the double whammy of Covid-19 and the entry of Ott streaming platforms.
Now it is the time to look into the existence and relevance of the TV channels dedicated to telecasting movies. When television arrived in India, it wielded the power to keep the viewers glued to their seats. It mattered little what was being shown on television.

To make the film watching experience richer and truly entertaining, Hiren Gada led Shemraoo Entertainment has now gone ahead and extended its aggressive plans for Ott medium. As a big step in this direction, it has enhanced digital platform ShemraooMe by launching ShemarooMe’s Box Office.
The unique feature about this newest offering is the Tvod (Transactional video on demand) model where a consumer would have an option to pay for one movie at a time. This means that even though ShemraooMe has a wide library out there to be explored by the movie loving audiences, there is always a choice of starting with one movie at a time. What makes it further enticing is the whole ‘ticket’ approach being resumed where a film lover can book through ShemarooMe as well as BookMyShow.com.
