Jon Stewart is back and rejuvenated, on the heels of the announcement earlier today that he re-upped his deal with Comedy Central to remain as host of The Daily Show through next year.
“This is my last show before the election, but not my last show. I’m coming back, baby. We’re doing another year,” the host said, to cheers and applause, while dancing (even doing some moves from Charli Xcx’s viral “Apple” dance).
The political comic kicked things off with addressing the presidential candidates’ respective final pushes to get out the vote ahead of Election Day Nov. 5. He quipped about Beyoncé’s appearance at Kamala Harris’ event and promptly laid into the headline-churning Donald Trump rally in his own backyard at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

After Donald Trump’s comments wishing he had military generals as loyal as Hitler’s resurfaced, John Oliver is baffled at the ex-president’s attempts to say he’s not like the German dictator. More specifically, that he’s saying he’s not like Hitler, because Hitler expressed the same sentiments differently.
During Sunday night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver zeroed in on Trump’s mass deportation proposals, and recent comments that America has become “a garbage can” where other countries dump their migrants. Of course, that sentiment isn’t new for Trump.
Oliver then pulled up a clip from last year, in which Trump told rally-goers that immigrants are “destroying the blood of our country.” He then immediately tried to rebuke comparisons to Hitler by saying the dictator said the same thing “in a much different way.”

Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” has long been a staple of naturalization ceremonies for immigrants to the United States, but John Oliver thinks it’s time for a change. So, will the help of Will Ferrell, he’s created an alternative.
To close out his show on Sunday night, Oliver reflected on his own immigration process to the U.S., which indeed ended with a music video for Greenwood’s song. The presence of it got Oliver curious, so he dug into the details of how it came to be a piece of the ceremony.
As it turns out, the government began using it on their own, and when Greenwood found out, his team forced the Uscis into a settlement deal that now sees the singer get $700 a year for use of the song. Naturally, Oliver mocked the move, and most of Greenwood’s attempts to monetize,...

John Oliver enlisted the help of Will Ferrell on Sunday night’s (October 27) Last Week Tonight to introduce a new song to be played at U.S. naturalization ceremonies. As Oliver pointed out on Sunday’s show, when someone becomes a United States citizen, their naturalization ceremony includes a rendition of “God Bless the USA” performed by country singer Lee Greenwood. However, the comedian thought it might be time for a replacement, not least because Donald Trump has somewhat hijacked the song. “I am intimately familiar with the U.S. immigration process, having finally become a citizen in 2019,” Oliver said. “It was a long, stressful process capped by a moving naturalization ceremony.” “While Lee Greenwood has repeatedly claimed his song is apolitical, he definitely isn’t,” the late-night host added. “Honestly, I’m not sure why it’s being played at ceremonies at all? Not just contractually or even musically,...

When someone becomes a citizen of the United States, their naturalization ceremony traditionally features a rendition of Lee Greenwood‘s “God Bless the USA.” On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Will Ferrell showcased a potential replacement for Greenwood’s tune.
Host John Oliver spoke about Greenwood’s legacy, poking fun at the conservative country singer’s many career missteps. He then argued against Greenwood’s song being played at the naturalization ceremonies, like his own. “I am intimately familiar with the U.S. immigration process, having finally become a citizen in 2019,” Oliver said.

In a highly-produced bit, John Oliver, who tackled issues of immigration on Last Week Tonight, proposed a new song to replace Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” being played at U.S. naturalization ceremonies — and it included a co-sign from Will Ferrell, who unexpectedly guest-starred as a crooning country artist in a sprawling music video.
The political-comic host, himself a recently naturalized citizen, got down to business this week, as talk about the election has increasingly dominated media cycles leading up to Voting Day Nov. 5. Eschewing a typical opening segment filled with irreverent jokes and a rundown of the headlines the week prior, Oliver switched up the program’s rhythm by quickly transitioning to the show’s — not one, but two — topics at hand: mass deportation and a strange feature of the naturalization process.
While Oliver manage to get off a smattering of insults directed at Donald Trump and running mate Jd Vance, the host’s tone took on a more serious color as he skewered what mass deportation would look like in effect.
Afterward, Oliver transitioned to a segment largely about Greenwood, poking fun at the conservative country singer’s missteps — such as when he said his signature song was better than Prince’s “Purple Rain” and “Margaritaville” (which spawned a massive empire to become the most lucrative song ever); faced a rejected trademark application for attempting to brand “God Bless the USA” for merchandise; engaged in a dispute over licensing issues for the song’s usage by the government; and released “God Bless Canada.”
Toward the show’s conclusion, Oliver used his case against Greenwood’s song being played at ceremonies to introduce an alternative by a “real American treasure. Not only will we not charge the government $700 a year for it — we’re not assholes. We’ll actually pay them $700 a year.”
The program then aired a previously shot high-definition music video, the locales of which stretched from a modern neon-tinged dive bar to the waters overlooking the Statue of Liberty. Cheers erupted as the audience made sense of who the American treasure was: In the clip, Ferrell serenades in an impassioned half-earnest, half-satirical ballad about America’s highs and lows (“Televangelists and fossil fuels / Metal detectors in all our schools / Private prisons and Mountain Dew / That stuff’s American / Now that’s your problem too”).
As the multi-Emmy winner strides out of the dive bar, the music video takes on exponentially more grandeur, featuring committed background players — a string ensemble, marching band, gospel choir and harmonizing singers, to name a few — and ridiculous props — a falling Boeing airplane door and bizarrely patriotic Tesla Cybertruck — among many other easter eggs. Ferrel touches on everything from “thousands of medical bankruptcies” to Chuck E. Cheese, tornadoes to Spirit Halloween. “Holy sh–, I just remembered the coup,” he quips toward the song’s conclusion.
The video, just shy of three minutes, ends in sparkler and festivities galore, as the music crescendoes and everyone joins in to welcome new citizens home. Swelling trumpets accompany a cheerleader’s final splint stunt as a larger-than-life American flag unfurls and the choir sails off on a cruise line, capping off the gargantuan effort to bring the unexpected Saturday Night Live-like treat to a close.

John Oliver took a jab at — who else? — Donald Trump in the opening segment of Sunday’s Last Week Tonight.
But first, there’s a lot of backstory to explain, for those who missed it, and it all has to do with McDonald’s, which has been in the news a lot of late.
First, an E. coli outbreak was linked to an item on the fast-food chain’s menu in recent days. Initially, it was believed that Quarter Pounders were to blame for at least one death and 75 other customers becoming ill across 13 states. However, on Sunday, McDonald’s said that testing ruled out the beef patties as the cause. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said it now believes the source of the outbreak is slivered onions. As of Sunday, McDonald’s said it would be putting Quarter Pounders back on the menu but without the onions.

Arguably, the biggest problem with Shadows of the Damned back when it was originally released in 2011 was its profound unseriousness—when gray-brown, war-torn, and taciturn were the de rigueur trends in gaming. It probably didn’t help that the game was still a far cry from whatever high-level terror was originally planned by co-creator Mikami Shinji (much of which wound up in the Evil Within games later down the road). But resuscitating this deeply unserious third-person horror shooter in 2024, when big and obnoxiously self-serious games are absolutely dooming studios, feels like the most wonderful breath of fresh air.
Shadows of the Damned is, in a nutshell, a dumber and weirder version of Resident Evil 4—and that’s said with nothing but love. There isn’t anything particularly poignant about booze-swilling badass Garcia Hotspur’s quest to save his lingerie-loving girlfriend Paula from the clutches of the big-headed demon Fleming. And...

For once, John Oliver is choosing to focus on the positives, at least where Waffle House is concerned. During the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” the HBO host dove into the Midwest and Southern restaurant chain, praising the hope and relief it provides people who have been impacted by recent hurricanes. The segment came in the wake of the devastating Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
If you don’t know about the Waffle House Index, welcome to one of the weirder wrinkles of life in the American south. Because Waffle House is committed to remaining open 24/7 except during extreme circumstances, the restaurant chain has become an unofficial marker for hurricane and storm severity. Basically, if a Waffle House is closed, that’s bad news. Relief efforts have even sought out closed Waffle Houses as markers that indicate which areas are in more dire need of immediate assistance.

First off, he played a clip of Alfonso Ribeiro introducing a number set to Scorpions’ classic “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” a line the host delivered somberly as he said the choice was made “weeks in advance” of Hurricane Milton’s path toward Florida.

Jd Vance recently stopped by an event in Pittsburgh while on the campaign trail and, according to the evangelical preacher leading that event, it was because God sent a hurricane to derail Vance’s other plans. Yes, seriously. And that was a bit much even for John Oliver, who delights in ridiculousness.
During Sunday’s new episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver spent most of his first segment going off on Jd Vance once again, this time for his “f—kboy deflections” and lies during the Vice Presidential debate last week. But Oliver also took issue with Lance Wallnau, the preacher and televangelist hosting “The Courage Tour” nationwide.
At a recent stop in Pittsburgh, Wallnau told the crowd that Vance would be joining them because God intervened on Vance’s planned visit to North Carolina.
“I’ll be honest with you, I take that as a direct act of God,...

John Oliver says that folks who are praising last week’s vice presidential debate for its “civility” are missing the point.
“The debate included discussions on how to carry out mass deportations and whether women should have control over their own bodies,” the Last Week Tonight host said during Sunday’s opening segment. “Etiquette is kind of beside the point. It’s like reading a ransom note and going, ‘This cursive is just so lovely. Look at the capital Y in “You have 24 hours before he dies.” There are still some people who were raised right.'”
Incidentally, the debate — between Donald Trump’s Republican running mate, J.D. John Oliver likened the praise for the vice presidential debate‘s “civility” to “a ransom note” with “lovely” cursive on tonight’s episode of Last Week Tonight.
In a segment unpacking the debate held Oct. 1, in which GOP VP pick Jd Vance skirted fact-checking and Democratic VP pick Tim Walz gave a less-than-solid performance (since-spoofed by Saturday Night Live), the comedic host stated that “etiquette is kind of beside the point” when the stakes include immigrant and women’s rights.
“It’s like reading a ransom note and going, ‘This cursive is just so lovely. Look at the capital ‘Y’ in ‘You have 24 hours before he dies.’ There are still some people who were raised right,'” he quipped.
Oliver then zeroed in on Vance’s actual political affiliations, including his association with far-right Christian evangelist leader Lance Wallnau, who once said that presidential nominee Kamala Harris had the “occult spirit” moving through her.

Held in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly, New York’s Climate Week is a massive, decentralized festival that this year ballooned to 900 events taking place all across the city from Sept. 22 to 29. This year, Hollywood names — from Matt Damon and Benedict Cumberbatch to heads of sustainability at Netflix, NBCUniversal and Paramount Global — took a prominent role, taking part in panel discussions, speeches, film screenings and even a vegan hot dog truck (thanks Rainn Wilson).
The confab also saw the debut of the inaugural Climate Film Festival, where 59 films — including such titles as Ecocide, Farming While Black, Hot & Toxic, and The Wild Robot — unspooled over 72 hours, along with a keynote speech by wildlife filmmaker James Honeyborne.

John Oliver is speaking out on the decision to delay Last Week Tonight segments going to YouTube.
In an interview with The Interview podcast from The New York Times, the late-night host criticized HBO for the rollout change. For the series’ 11th season, the premium cable outlet announced they are now holding back segments from the show for a few days from YouTube after they premiere. Audiences were previously able to watch the show’s main story on YouTube the morning after an episode aired.
“It’s massively frustrating to me. I was not happy with it at all,” Oliver said of the decision.
He further explained, “What I love about having the show on YouTube is that we can reach beyond HBO subscribers. That feels really important to me. I really, really appreciate the fact that they do that. I would rather they did it straight after the show...

John Oliver doesn’t want his talk show title “Last Week Tonight” to be too literal.
The late night host said during The New York Times‘ “The Interview” podcast that HBO delaying the release of his episode clips online makes “Last Week Tonight” stale. In fact, with the four-day delay that HBO rolled out starting with the Season 11 premiere, it’s almost like “Last Last Week Tonight” for audiences watching on YouTube. The show airs on HBO Sunday nights, with clips going online the following Thursday.
“It’s massively frustrating to me,” Oliver said. “I was not happy with it at all.”
Warner Bros. Discovery opted for HBO to delay Oliver’s segments online to get more people to sign up for streaming platform Max. Oliver is just thankful HBO can still share content on YouTube, too.

John Oliver is “not happy” with HBO’s decision to delay sharing clips of Last Week Tonight on YouTube.
Deadline reported in February of this year that starting with the Season 11 premiere of Oliver’s show, HBO would not share the main story segment on YouTube the following day as it had done until then. Instead, the premium cable network would delay the video until Thursday after the show aired to drive up subscribers to the Max streaming service.
“It’s massively frustrating to me,” Oliver said on The New York Times podcast The Interview. “I was not happy with it at all.”
Oliver wants the topics he discusses on his weekly talk show to reach the most people possible, and sharing clips of the show on social media platforms help reach new audiences.

John Oliver does not agree with HBO’s decision to delay clips from “Last Week Tonight” from streaming on YouTube. While the main segment of each “Last Week Tonight” episode was previously uploaded to YouTube the day after airing on HBO, the network changed course staring with the Season 11 premiere in February and now uploads new “Last Week Tonight” videos to YouTube on a four-day delay.
“It’s massively frustrating to me,” Oliver told The New York Times on “The Interview” podcast. “I was not happy with it at all.”
Variety reported in February that the driving force behind delaying “Last Week Tonight” clips to YouTube was for the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned HBO to get more people to sign up for Max. Oliver’s talk show recently won the Emmy for outstanding scripted variety series over “Saturday Night Live.” The show has won a total of 30 Emmys over the course of its run.

John Oliver still isn’t happy about HBO’s decision to no longer drop YouTube clips of “Last Week Tonight” on Mondays.
“It’s massively frustrating to me. I was not happy with it at all,” Oliver said during a recent interview with New York Times podcasts. “I hope it works because I worry about it … It remains to be proven to me this was necessary.”
Since the premiere of “Last Week Tonight” in 2014, the series has posted its A story — which involves Oliver’s deep dive into the big story of the week — on YouTube the day after the show’s Sunday night episode. This strategy helped the series gain its large following over the past decade. But starting in February of this year, HBO announced it would instead be dropping these clips on Thursdays moving forward.

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver took aim at recently FBI-indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams, skewering the politician for his ties to illegal campaign contributions, particularly from political ally Turkey.
The comedian began the segment by outlining the charges against the embattled leader, which include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bribery, and how seemingly every media appearance and utterance from Adams has not worked in his favor.
“Adams is entitled to due process like anyone else, but he has not been helping himself,” he said. “Last year, Adams said he’d be ‘shocked’ if anyone on his campaign had acted illegally because, quote, I cannot tell you how much I start the day with telling my team we’ve got to follow the law. I’m not convinced you have a ton of respect for the law if every day you have to hype yourself up into obeying it.

John Oliver returned after his latest Emmys win on Sunday night, and to kick off the show, he went right for the throat of vice presidential hopeful Jd Vance, and his claims about pets being eaten by migrants in Springfield, Ohio.
Acknowledging that he was on hiatus during the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Oliver noted that he still wanted to touch on Trump’s performance — particularly when he echoed Vance’s claims about pets being eaten.
“Can you even remember a time where something like that would’ve been disqualifying? Because I can’t anymore,” Oliver mourned after playing a clip.
That said, the host was more upset with Trump’s running mate than Trump himself on this one, mostly because Jd Vance — “a man who always looks like a yassified chipmunk,” he joked — has not only doubled down on perpetuating these baseless claims, but...

John Oliver and his Last Week Tonight team were busy winning an Emmy last week, so Sunday night’s show marked his first opportunity to weigh in on the Donald Trump-Kamala Harris presidential debate.
Oliver chose to zero in on Trump’s claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are abducting and eating cats and dogs. The HBO show’s host set up the clip by calling it an “exceptional moment in American oratory.”
“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” Trump said in the clip from the Sept. 10 debate.
Responded Oliver: “Yeah, that was Donald Trump accusing Haitian immigrants of killing and eating people’s pets. And can you even remember a time when something like that would have been disqualifying? Because I can’t anymore.

Ugh! As if!
In Sunday’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the comic host delved into one of the main talking points having come out of this month’s presidential debate: that of the GOP ticket’s parroting of a baseless racist dog whistle regarding the Haitian immigrant community in Springfield, Ohio.
Oliver began the segment by playing Donald Trump’s much-memed and discussed clip where he falsely claimed that Haitians were eating pets, a notion that running mate Jd Vance had circulated (and since walked back) and that originated in neo-Nazi groups.
In playing a video of Vance discussing the discredited conspiracy theory, the VP candidate is seen mispronouncing the Caribbean nation as “Haitia.”
Not missing a beat, the talk show host quipped, “First, there is only one Haiti-related mispronunciation we recognize in this house, and it’s Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, delivering the iconic line: ‘And so...

It would be perfectly reasonable to assume that debuting at the tail end of the most wildly unpredictable presidential election in modern times would provide Saturday Night Live with all of the drama it can handle as it celebrates its hotly anticipated 50th season. But drama often lurks behind the scenes, too, as it has with the will-he-or-won’t-he retirement rumors surrounding TV maestro Lorne Michaels. In the fall of 2020, it was Michaels who appeared on Sunday Today and revealed that the 50th season would be his last. “By that point, I think I really deserve to wander off,” he told host Willie Geist.
The comment, which he then doubled down on in subsequent interviews, prompted a tireless succession of media stories about who might replace him. Tina Fey’s name emerged, along with that of Seth Meyers, Colin Jost and Michael Che. Then something happened as the milestone season...

There’s no shortage of Monday morning quarterbacks after an awards show. But for all that went right and not-so-right during Sunday’s 2024 Emmys telecast, there’s one mistake even the producers agree on: John Oliver was played off at the exact wrong moment.
Around an hour and 15 minutes into the show, Oliver accepted the award for outstanding scripted variety show on behalf of his Last Week Tonight staff. He flubbed his own son’s name. He thanked HBO for not canceling him. And, as he began to share a few words about his late dog, the wrap-up music started to play. “We had no idea that the dog that he was talking about had passed away,” says executive producer Dionne Harmon. “If you look back, you’ll notice that we turned the music down the moment he said the dog had passed. We didn’t know!”

Just hours after John Oliver dropped an F-bomb at the Emmys for trying to play him off as he paid tribute to his dead dog, the Emmys producers are apologizing to the late-night host.
“I apologize to John and his family for playing the music — and the dog,” Jesse Collins told TheWrap in a Monday interview. “We turned it off at his request and turned it back on when he said he wanted to be played off.”
Collins, who executive produced the 76th annual ceremony alongside Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, added that the producers didn’t know Oliver’s dog had passed when they started playing the music and don’t receive the acceptance speeches ahead of time, reiterating, “We did not know that the dog had passed.”
“John always gives us the fun moment,” Rouzan-Clay told TheWrap, adding that Oliver shared a similar moment with Anthony Anderson’s...

Perhaps the toughest call for an awards producer is figuring out when to start playing a winner off the stage. On Sunday night’s 76th Emmys, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” had just won yet another prize — its second in a row for scripted variety series — and the host’s speech had started to go long.
A flustered Oliver had already botched his son Hudson’s name (calling him “Husband” by mistake) and then started to talk about his dog. For the Jesse Collins Entertainment team, it felt like a good time to wrap things up. So, they kicked the playoff music into high gear.
And then, Oliver revealed the kicker, as the orchestral music got louder: The dog had just died.
“I was like, ‘oh, take the music down!’” executive producer Jesse Collins laughs about that unexpected moment. “You’re just trying to make a call. And then...

Not a lot of earth-shattering moments at last night’s Emmy Awards, but at least there were a handful of good jokes. In between Shogun and Hacks taking home the night’s major awards, here were the evening’s nine best punchlines and funniest moments…
1 Hopefully, the Last ‘The Bear’ Isn’t a Comedy’ Joke
Eugene Levy: “The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most-nominated comedy in history. Now, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy — but in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”
2 Shoutout to ‘Hot Ones’
Dan Levy: “The creators of Shogun actually had their scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten and then translated back into English subtitles that you missed because you were also on your phone...

Eugene and Dan Levy hosted the 76th Emmy Awards — or as Dan called it, “Broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.” It was the year’s second Emmys show, since the 2023 ceremony got delayed by the strike until this past January. The father-son duo kept it light and affable and Canadian all night, reprising their Schitt’s Creek chemistry. The January ceremony went for low-key nostalgic charm; this was a rerun that turned into your basic blah-bath. Pretty standard for the Emmys, always the least glam,...

It’s the time of the year again when fans celebrate the winners of the Emmy Awards, but also lament the loss of their favorite series and actors. Just like anything in life, loss is another lesson that teaches us how to strive for the better the next time around.

Unfortunately, many losses for this year’s Emmy event were shocking and even upsetting. It’s still difficult to wrap our heads around the fact that these promising and deserving nominees went home without that precious golden statuette.
Here Are The Most Disappointing Losses at 2024 Emmy Awards
The 76th Emmy Awards was attended by hopefuls vying for that coveted win, the symbolic status of prestige and acknowledgment for work done with effort and passion. This year, the shocking twist did not only occur once but many times.

For me the big story of the night at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday was the completely unexpected win by Hacks for Best Comedy Series over The Bear, which was coming off a record 10 Emmy wins in January for its first season. Season 2 of The Bear led with another record 23 nominations, steamrolled through the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend with seven wins, and had another four Sunday night leading up to the final award of the evening. At this point, it felt like a no brainer that the FX series about a chef returning to Chicago to run a restaurant would win. But then the Shocker.
Max’s Hacks, now in its third season, somehow pulled it off and won Best Comedy Series having already scored Comedy Writing and a third win for star Jean Smart as Outstanding Leading Actress in Comedy Series. And although this was the...

I have no clue if the expression “run it back” originated in sports, but I most frequently hear it in the context of the end of a successful season, when a player or coach or owner expresses the desire to keep all of the key pieces in place in order to repeat the prior achievement. Sometimes it works and a dynasty is born. Sometimes, though, an effort to run it back falls flat, proving how ephemeral the initial triumph was in the first place.
Back in January, the strike-delayed 75th Primetime Emmy Awards proved to be one of the best awards telecasts in recent memory. Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the show was packed with memorable moments that reflected a love for and pride in the medium of television.
It was such a likable change of pace for a telecast so frequently driven by TV’s perpetual artistic inferiority complex that...
