It’s not the ambush where Charlie and Bruce need to escape hitmen wearing inflatable dinosaur costumes. It’s not any of the machinations of the Taipei gangsters now gunning for the Sun family. Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker cracked a glass ceiling on Sunday, becoming the first woman to win the American Society of Cinematographers Award in the feature competition during the 37th ASC Awards.
The crowd at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom erupted with applause and gave Walker a lengthy standing ovation as her name was called.
“This is for all the women that win this award after me,” she said to enthusiastic applause, and she looked for to more women breaking more glass ceilings. “Thijs is an inclusive, representative community,” she said, adding, “I didn’t cry, I thought I was going to cry.”

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.

Yesterday saw a deluge of precursor results hit the Oscar race, including one of the biggest Guilds chiming in. Obviously, we know already that last night the Directors Guild of America gave their top prize to Sam Mendes for 1917, but Saturday evening also saw the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, the Annie Awards, the Cinema Audio Society Awards, and the USC Scripter Awards, in addition to the Directors Guild of America Awards. “Welcome to Marwen” is, in a word, indescribable. But not in a good way.
Robert Zemeckis, who directed “Forrest Gump,” one of the most iconic underdog movies of all time, returns with another male protagonist with a remarkable story. But this time the filmmaker doesn’t quite seem to connect with his subject, which makes for an even greater disconnect with the audience.
Gaining empathy for a protagonist such as the one in “Marwen” shouldn’t really be an issue, though. This is, after all, the real-life story of Mark Hogancamp (played by Steve Carell), who was beaten so terribly by five men outside a bar in 2000 that it left him without most of his memory of the event and everything before then — horrific details that were previously revisited in the acclaimed 2010 documentary, “Marwencol.”

With the trailer for next week’s episode of The Flash, “Monster,” focusing heavily on the threat of a Kaiju-like beast and Earth-19 Harrison Wells – and understandably so – I find it quite refreshing that this generous bounty of promotional stills offer a glimpse at another major running plot thread.
What I’m referring to is that of Caitlin Snow’s gradual transition to becoming Killer Frost, which we’ve been led to believe will be come to fruition sooner rather than later. Perhaps she and the rest of us will get some answers as to what the heck is going on when she pays a visit to her mother, Dr. Tannhauser. With Caitlin previously having met her villainous Earth-2 counterpart, seeing her emotionally grapple with this transformation should make for some compelling television, to say the least.
Our titular hero, The Flash, is also not forgotten...

In tonight’s episode of The Flash, Harry returned to Earth-2, but realizing that they still need his help, the team decided to find a different version from an alternate Earth. In the end, they settled on the Harrison Wells from Earth-19, but the promo above makes it clear that there may be more to their new ally than meets the eye.
