Exclusive: Longtime Berlanti Productions executive Jonathan Gabay has been named President of Television for film and TV production company Rideback, which recently re-upped its first-look TV deal at CBS Studios. Reporting to Rideback co-CEOs Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso, Gabay will lead TV development and production, overseeing a team that includes Rideback VP Television Courteney Tarantin.

Gabay succeeds Lindsey Liberatore, who recently left as EVP Television, segueing to producing.

He comes to Rideback from Berlanti Productions. During his almost six years at the Warner Bros TV-based company, which he joined as SVP before being promoted to EVP of Television in 2021, Gabay oversaw projects in the drama, comedy, animation and unscripted space. On Tuesday, Hulu released the trailer for “Interior Chinatown,” its wild action-comedy series based on Charles Yu’s book of the same name. Yang, who plays a mild-mannered waiter, is about to get way in over his head.

But first, he exists in total mundanity.

In the trailer for “Interior Chinatown,” Yang’s Willis Wu laments that he lives a relatively simple life, feeling like a background character as he works at a restaurant in Chinatown, when in fact, he has unknowingly been relegated to the background of a police procedural titled “Black & White.”

“Nothing ever changes — nothing exciting ever happens to me or you or anyone we know,” Yang’s Willis tells to his coworker and friend, found in Ronny Chieng. “I feel like I’m a background character in someone else’s story.”

Just as soon as he can blink, Willis’ fate changes as he’s plunged into the action when he inadvertently witnesses a crime outside the restaurant.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.

In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.

The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”

Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.

Hulu has announced that Interior Chinatown will launch on the streaming service on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. All ten episodes of the series will be available on that day.

It’s official: Walker will not be renewed for a fifth season by the CW.

“We want to thank the entire cast, crew, writers, directors and producers of Walker for their hard work and dedication over four incredible seasons,” the network said in a statement. “We also want to give a special thanks to star and executive producer Jared Padalecki, who has been a member of The CW family for over 20 years and was integral to some of the biggest hits on the network.”

As Deadline reported yesterday, sets for Walker were being dismantled with its renewal prospects dim. Star and executive producer Padalecki, who starred on the WB/CW long-running hit Supernatural for 15 seasons before segueing to Walker, shared the news of the official cancellation with fans.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series is undergoing a change in leadership.

Variety has learned that Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner on Season 1, is stepping down. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers going forward. Netflix has already announced the show has been renewed for two more seasons, concluding with Season 3.

Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1 of “Last Airbender,” while Raisani was an executive producer, director, and a VFX supervisor. Kim will remain onboard as an executive producer for Seasons 2 and 3. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Kim wanted to explore new opportunities following the multi-year development process on “Last Airbender” and has signed a deal with Disney to work as an executive producer on the “Percy Jackson” series while also developing new projects for that company.

Showrunner Albert Kim, who replaced creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is also exiting the Netflix live-action series. Co-executive producer Christine Boylan and exec producer Jabbar Raisani — both of whom were hired by Kim — will take over as the drama’s third showrunners for the previously announced second and third seasons.

Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. The streamer has renewed the lavish live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon series for two more seasons.

The order will conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar in fantastical world.

Since the show’s Feb. 22 debut, the series has been Netflix’s top English-language TV show with 41.1 million views, according to the streamer.

While the first season was eight episodes, there’s no word yet on the episode count of the final two seasons. Netflix has done double-season renewals before (on shows like Emily in Paris and Stranger Things), but this might be the first time the streamer has ordered two seasons to close out a series. Avatar: The Last Airbender, the anime-inspired live-action series, will be able to tell the story of the four nations: Water. Earth. Fire. Air after Netflix renewed it for a further two seasons.

The streamer has handed the show a two-season renewal order to conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar.

It comes after the show premiered on Netflix on February 22 and recorded 41.1M views in its first 11 days, topping its TV list for the last two weeks and being on track to enter its top ten most-watched list over its first three months.

The plan is to film these two seasons – Seasons 2 and 3 – in close succession in order to mitigate the fact that child actors tend to grow up quickly.

The series comes from Rideback, whose boss Dan Lin, an exec producer on the series, was recently named Netflix’s new film chief, replacing Scott Stuber.

Kiawentiio is teasing the live-action Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and is revealing some key changes to Sokka.

When adapting the animated series into live-action, the writers chose to remove the “sexist” elements of the character portrayed by Ian Ousley.

“There’s more weight with realism in every way,” Ousley said in an interview with EW about the remake, with co-star Kiawentiio chiming in and adding, “I feel like we also took out the element of how sexist [Sokka] was. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original show that were iffy.”

Ousley continued, “Yeah, totally. There are things that were redirected just because it might play a little differently [in live action].”

The publication noted that there are Reddit threads that are dedicated to pointing out Sokka’s sexist remarks with the character saying things like, “Girls are better at fixing pants than guys, and guys are better at hunting and fighting.

Netflix is offering a fiery new look at the upcoming “Avatar: The Last Airbender” live-action series.

The streamer has released new first look photos of multiple Fire Nation characters, specifically: Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai (see below), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh (above), Ken Leung as Commander Zhao (see below), and Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula (see below). Netflix also presented a new image of Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko (see below).

These are the latest first looks Netflix has given for the live-action series. Previously, the company shared photos of Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), Sakka (Ian Ousley), and Zuko.

The brief (just 56 seconds) teaser features symbols representing the four elements, air, fire, water and earth, and was debuted during Netflix’s Tudum event in Stockholm, Sweden this weekend.

In addition, the streamer debuted first-look images from the show of Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko.

Los Angeles, June 18 (Ians) Fans just got their first look of the upcoming live action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ which shows the four elements of water, fire, earth and air coming together.

The vague 54-second teaser showcases the symbols of the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads, accompanied by music reminiscent of the original series which fans would identify with.

Each of the nations has people referred to as Benders, these people can telekinetically manipulate and control the respective elements of their nation.

The ‘Avatar’, however, is the only individual with the ability to bend all four elements.

The series will see Gordon Cormier starring as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko with Daniel Dae Kim joining the cast as Fire Lord Ozai and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee starring as General Iroh.

Netflix released its first look of the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series. Appearing at the streamer’s Tudum global fan event in São Paulo, Brazil, the cast previewed a teaser featuring the elements, which you can see in the video posted above.

Kiawentiio (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Dallas Liu (Prince Zuko) and Gordon Cormier (Aang) make up the cast of the series set to drop in 2024.

The series is an adaptation of the award-winning and beloved Nickelodeon animated series of the same name. Albert Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. It’s final. There will be no second season for Walker Independence. Efforts to find a new home for the CBS Studios-produced Walker spinoff were unsuccessful following cancellation by the CW, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

Walker Independence executive producer Jared Padalecki is not giving up hope that the show will find a way to go on and says a search is underway to find a new home for Season 2. Following the CW’s cancellation of the Walker prequel series Tuesday, Padalecki tells Deadline’s sister site TVLine, “We are aggressively looking for a place that Walker Independence can land.”

“I’m so proud of Walker Independence. It’s such a great show. I think it’s a show that’s needed,” Padalecki added. “We absolutely are thrilled about the show, proud of the show, and we all feel like it belongs somewhere people can see it. We love the cast. We love the writing. We love the setting. We love the storylines that it’s telling. It’s storylines unlike any other ‘Western’ show on TV or streaming right now.”

“Walker: Independence” has been canceled at The CW after just one season, Variety has learned.

The series served as a prequel to fellow CW show “Walker,” which was just renewed for Season 4 at the network.

The show was set in the late 1800s. Per the official description, it followed “Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara), an affluent and tough-minded Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. After crossing paths with Calian (Justin Johnson Cortez), a curious Apache tracker, Abby arrives in the town of Independence, Texas, where she encounters diverse and eclectic residents running from their pasts, chasing their dreams, and keeping their own secrets.”

The cast also included Katie Findlay, Lawrence Kao, Matt Barr, Philemon Chambers, Greg Hovanessian, and Gabriela Quezada.

The teleplay for the pilot was written by Seamus Kevin Fahey from a story co-written by him and Anna Fricke of Pursued by a Bear.

The CW has canceled Walker prequel Walker Independence after one season.

The move, which was expected, follows the CW’s renewal of mothership series Walker earlier today.

The bulk of the CW’s existing scripted series will be canceled this week as the network is transitioning to a new business model of lower-cost scripted programming in pursuit of profitability. While Walker is the CW’s most watched series, Walker: Independence was in the middle of the pack ratings-wise.

The CW has given a 13-episode Season 4 order to Walker, starring Jared Padalecki, to air in 2023-24 broadcast season.

This is the first renewal decision made by the CW under its new regime; as Deadline has reported, flagship All American‘s renewal, announced in January, was part of Nexstar’s deal to acquire the CW.

Walker had been considered the frontrunner among the CW’s scripted series to snag a renewal. It is a strong ratings performer, ranking as the network’s most-watched linear show this season in Total Viewers.

The series also is produced very efficiently by CBS Studios, something that is key to the new CW, which has stressed that they would be shifting toward lower-cost scripted programming in order to make the network profitable.
