Toni Collette’s directorial debut, an animated series based on The Sapphires and a Shakespeare-inspired anthology are among the 42 projects to recently share in $1.4 million of development funding from Screen Australia.
The slate, which includes 14 features, eight online projects and 20 TV dramas, marks the final development funding Screen Australia awarded in the 2019-20 financial year.
These projects come from both the existing Premium and Generate development funds. Following its Frontieres market pitch a few years ago and a successful Indigogo campaign, The Void shot in Canada last year with Aaron Poole, Kathleen Munroe, Kenneth Welsh, Ellen Wong, and Art Hindle. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest 2016 in Austin to a packed house, with producer Casey Walker and directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski in attendance. The Void draws inspiration from a number of horror influences, including Hellraiser, The Beyond, H.P. Lovecraft, and Lucio Fulci. Those expecting the absurd comedic touches of Aston-6 (the filmmaking collaborative of which Gillespie and Kostanski are part) are in for a surprise, because The Void is grim. However, those who have been paying attention know not to expect any funny business here, unless your idea of laughs is a Rob...

A throwback to the ambitious nature of indie horror filmmaking of the 1980s, The Void recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2016 Fantastic Fest. The morning after the film’s debut, Daily Dead had the opportunity to sit down with co-writers/directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski, as well as producer Casey Walker. The trio discussed the several years it took to get their latest collaboration made, pushing the boundaries in indie horror, and more.
Great job, guys. I know this is something that’s been in the works for a while and you were able to get to this point with the support of a lot of horror folks out there.
Casey Walker: Yeah, and that came about after the script was written. We decided to do that to fund a lot of the creature stuff in the movie, just to supplement the money for the creatures, because it was so creature-intensive.

Director Yedidya Gorsetman and co-writer Mark Leidner wanted to be the next Duplass Brothers.
Inspired by the micro-budget mumblecore films they’d seen coming out of SXSW, they made “Jammed,” a $17,000 feature about a couple trying, and failing, to relive their youth by going to a jam band festival.
After screening the film at smaller film festivals, Gorsetman came to an important realization: he wanted to continue pursuing his career as a filmmaker, but that making micro budget indies wouldn’t be a path to career sustainability.

As Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie move closer to bringing The Void to life on the big screen one important question to be answered is: Where is it? Like, actually, where is it? Where can you go to enter a hell dimension? That answer may very well be an abandoned hospital in Northern Ontario.Want to know what's coming? Kostanski, Gillespie and producer Casey Walker recently traveled up north to explore the prospective site and have released a new video documenting the experience - and the site - as part of their ongoing crowd funding campaign. It's always refreshing to watch a film that has a new and fun take on the zombie metaphor. In the case of A Little Bit Zombie, directed by Casey Walker, that take is the change that love and marriage bring. The film is a very funny and unique take on the usual zombie film, and even the zombie comedy, through its use of some outrageous characters, screwball comedy and familial situations that had me and the audience laughing pretty continuously.Steve (Kristopher Turner), his fiancee Tina (Crystal Lowe), his sister Sarah (Kristen Hager) and her husband Craig (Shawn Roberts) are taking a little cottage vacation before the big wedding day. Tina is, to be frank, something of a bridezilla, and Steve spends the first part of...

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the Arizona Underground Film Festival has expanded to a whopping nine nights on Sept. 21-29 for a cinematic event the likes of Tucson has never seen before!
The shenanigans kick off with the opening night film The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, an experimental Italian feature directed by Davide Manuli and starring Vincent Gallo as the hero and the villain to a strange young boy, then end with the closing night film Jason M. Solomon’s nostalgic documentary 7 Years Underground: A 60′s Tale, which profiles the legendary Cafe Au Go Go in NYC that hosted such up-and-coming acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin and more.
In between those two films lies a twisted carnage of movie mayhem, including Spencer Parsons’ demented homage to ’70s mystery cartoons Saturday Morning Massacre; Michael Melamedoff exploitative semi-doc The Exhibitionists; Stephen Amis’ Australian WWII sci-fi...

The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.

The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

The 5th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival, which will run on Sept. 21-29 at various venues around Tucson, Arizona, has officially released the titles of six of the films that will be screening at this year’s event.
It’s clear from this half-dozen batch of movies that the fest will be sticking to its successful formula that has allowed it to grow by leaps and bounds since 2008. That formula consists of offering up a diverse batch of fun genre fare, controversial exploitation films, crowd-pleasing music documentaries and somewhat unclassifiable cinematic oddities.
The titles and brief descriptions are below. The full lineup will be available on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film in early September.

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

Stephen McHattie says he doesn.t know why horror filmmakers turn to him so often for the showiest parts. They do though, and amongst his vast credits are more horrors than most actors have done or would hope to do in a lifetime. There are other genres, in film on TV and onstage, but McHattie has something fierce and profound about him, and horror may be his natural home. This month Casey Walker.s A Little Bit Zombie hits the theatres featuring McHattie as the exuberantly out .of-control undead hunter who wields his gun like a macabre dance partner. There is something originally energetic about his work in Zombie together with arrogance so complete that it.s endearing.

We're not going to make the cliché Canadian joke here. No Mackenzie Brothers reference or hosers or eh? We're not even going to ask if you're elbow deep in Tim Horton's donuts. We've just got a request from filmmaker Casey Walker ... go see A Little Bit Zombie.
Judging by the hilarious trailer for the film, which was produced and directed by Walker, A Little Bit Zombie might be this year's Tucker and Dale Versus Evil or The Cottage. This looks like a horror-comedy that nails it. It even has a Dead Alive feel to it. We get nothing but good vibes from what we've seen so far.
After selling out loads of festival screenings A Little Bit Zombie is making its theatrical debut May 17 on 20 screens across Canada. A wider release through Landmark Cinemas is promised if the film initially performs well. And that's where you can help. If you're...

A Little Bit Zombie
Directed by Casey Walker
Written by Christopher Turner and Trevor Martin
Canada, 2011
A great film is one that seems new ever time you watch it, and although Casey Walker’s Canadian horror comedy, A Little Bit Zombie, isn’t something we’ve never seen before, it nevertheless rises to the level of greatness due to it’s inherent ability to embrace and transcend tired genre conventions. Smart, well crafted, and painfully funny, A Little Bit Zombie not only reanimates the zombie genre, it singlehandedly brings Canadian Cinema back to life.
