Tyler Perry has formalized a new creative partnership with Netflix to write, direct and produce feature films under a multi-year, first-look deal.
Perry already has five films under his belt at the streamer: “A Fall From Grace,” “A Madea Homecoming,” the period drama “A Jazzman’s Blues”, the upcoming World War II-set drama “Six Triple Eight” and the thriller “Mea Culpa.”
WME CEO Ari Emanuel teased the new pact at Bloomberg Media’s Screentime conference on Oct. 11. During the talk, Emanuel revealed that he’d just closed deals at Netflix for David Ellison and Perry. Pressed about the partnership in his own Screentime conversation, Perry played coy.
“He talks too much,” Perry joked, noting that the deal hadn’t been announced yet. “I’ll wait for them to announce it. But yeah, Netflix has been an incredible partner to work with, and so is Amazon. It’s been really, really, really incredible,...

Writer-director Tyler Perry has been living with the screenplay for “A Jazzman’s Blues” for 27 years, longer than it takes most kids to grow up and move out of the house. Inspired by a chance meeting between Perry and playwright August Wilson in 1995, You can’t keep a good melodrama down.
A glowingly lensed Jim Crow-era drama, “Jazzman’s” not unlike “Green Book” or “The Help” — absent the pandering to white audiences’ anxiety about being (to paraphrase a meme) the baddies in this situation. There is one sympathetic white character, Holocaust survivor Ira (Ryan Eggold); his German accent is as exaggerated as the rest of the cast’s Southern drawls. But while the same folks who liked “Green Book” will likely enjoy “A Jazzman’s Blues,” Perry puts Black life in rural Georgia in the 1930s and ‘40s at the center of his story — no white intermediaries required.

Tyler Perry on ‘A Jazzman’s Blues,’ a Film 27 Years in the Making, Inspired by His Childhood (Video)
“A Jazzman’s Blues” was a movie adventure 27 years in the making for Tyler Perry, who wrote the screenplay in 1995, the first ever for the prodigious writer-director-actor-magnate. After the project stalled in the mid-2000s, cameras finally started rolling last year in Savannah, Georgia. And in 2022, the sprawling, music-filled Southern Gothic romance of Perry’s dreams was born.
Perry gathered much of his cast, including Amirah Vann, Solea Pfeiffer, Ryan Eggold, Austin Scott, Milauna Jackson, Lana Young and lead Joshua Boone to sit down with Executive Editor, Awards, Steve Pond at TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival.
“A Jazzman’s Blues” tells the story of Bayou (Boone) and Leanne (Pfeiffer), who get caught up in the tempest of jazz, secrets, family abuse, and institutional racism. “I was 26 or 27 with great ambition and a lot of time,” Perry said. “Growing up in rural Louisiana, I know these people very well,...

Parker is the director of “The Birth of a Nation,” which was released at the height of #OscarsSoWhite and won the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 for its depiction of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. It was bought by Fox Searchlight for a festival record $17.5 million and was expected to be a major Oscar contender.

Exclusive: American Skin is coming to BET+ next week.
The Nate Parker directed, penned and starring drama will debut on the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service on April 15, I have learned.
This move online for American Skin comes after a lucrative Vertical Entertainment distributed run for the Spike Lee executive produced film on PVOD starting January 15. It also follows a chorus of public support for The Birth of a Nation director Parker’s sophomore feature and its critical focus on the criminal justice system and institutional racism from the likes of LeBron James and Selma star David Oyelowo.
A chorus the Tyler Perry and BET-backed BET+ is clearly adding its voice and platform to.
“While BET+ is a platform for promoting Black stories, it’s also a place for championing Black culture and advocating for our community,” said BET+ EVP and General Manager, Devin Griffin today. “When we first learned of the film’s ambitions,...

Exclusive: In the wake of receiving two Golden Globe nominations for its Sia-directed movie Music, Vertical Entertainment can boast that its Nate Parker feature American Skin has become one of the distributor’s highest grossing titles on PVOD with $4M over two weeks. American Skin debuted on Jan. 15 in select cinemas and on on-demand platforms such as Apple, Amazon, Vudu, and Google Play. American Skin‘s two-week figure bests the $2.5M+ that it accumulated over ten days for last summer’s Capone, a previous Vertical Entertainment high point.
I’m told that American Skin‘s PVOD success is largely due to a strategized social media initiative which received great support from the Black community who embraced the film with tastemakers such as Lebron James, Diddy, E40, David Oyelowo, and more.

The Jefferson County grand jury has issued an indictment in the Breonna Taylor case, announcing three counts against one officer for wanton endangerment and disregard for human life by randomly shooting into an apartment and not against a specific target. Police officers are required to shoot at specific targets, not indiscriminately. The “wanton disregard” charge could result in a five-year prison sentence. It is considered a lesser offense than manslaughter, which could bring a lengthier sentence.
Taylor was killed on March 13 at age 26 after being shot by three Louisville Metro Police Department officers, only one of whom was charged today — the one who was initially fired for the killing. The cops forced entry into her apartment with a no-knock search warrant and Taylor was shot eight times in the midst of gunfire between the police and Taylor’s boyfriend. Jordan Peele led a rallying cry over the weekend of high profile directors and actors calling for the arrest of the three police officers who killed Breonna Taylor. The phrase “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor” became a viral Twitter topic on June 7, just two days after what would have been the late Taylor’s 27th birthday. Taylor was killed in March at age 26 after being shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers. The cops forced entry into her apartment with a no-knock search warrant and Taylor was shot eight times in the midst of gunfire between the police and Taylor’s boyfriend. Protesters gathered on Friday at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
The protest comes one day after David Oyelowo, who starred in the 2014 best picture nominee “Selma” as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., revealed that Oscar voters were angered by the cast wearing T-shirts that said “I Can’t Breathe” to the film’s Los Angeles premiere in protest of the murder of Eric Garner. Director Ava DuVernay confirmed the story on Twitter.
“Members of the Academy called in to the studio and our producers saying, ‘How dare they do that? Why are they stirring s–-?’ and ‘We are not going to vote for that film, because we do not think it is their place to be doing that,'” Oyelowo told Screen Daily’s Screen Talk.

Champions of actor and filmmaker Nate Parker — including Spike Lee, who is “presenting” Parker’s sophomore effort, “American Skin” and promoting it in its controversial premiere slot at the Venice Film Festival — would rather that we talk about his work rather than about allegations from an incident that took place decades ago.
So, let’s talk about the work: “American Skin” is a clunky, heavy-handed film that takes a pressing contemporary issue and flattens it under two genres the writer-director seems ill-equipped to handle — the mockumentary and the courtroom drama.
Is the shooting of unarmed black and brown people by police officers, who then go unpunished, a pressing issue? Absolutely. Does Parker address this issue with skill or subtlety or urgency or competence? Barely.

Thanks to some delays in production, it's taken a long time for the new season of Strike Back to make it to our TV screens. We already know that it's the final season of the action series on Cinemax so there's no worry about the action series being cancelled. Was it worth the wait? Will it bring great ratings? Stay tuned.
On the final season of Strike Back, Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) of the elite British intelligence undercover unit Section 20 set out to crack a missing-persons case in Bangkok. They quickly realize that what seems to be a simple kidnapping is actually the first step in a massive terrorist plot with global implications. The rest of the cast includes Robson Green, Michelle Lukes, and Milauna Jackson.

Holding court at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Thursday, Cinemax threw Strike Back fans a bone by narrowing the premiere date for the delayed fourth and final season down to “summer 2015.”
The high-octane action-drama typically fires off its new episodes in the summer, but production on Season 4 was paused for six months when series star Sullivan Stapleton, who plays Sgt. Damien Scott, sustained a serious, injury off-set in February 2014.
The pay cabler also released the logline for the final season, including casting details:

The final season of "Strike Back" has the potential for even more bad-assery than usual, based on the just-announced guest cast. The action drama, co-produced by Cinemax and the UK's Sky 1, resumed production on its fourth and final season, following a brief hiatus caused by star Sullivan Stapleton getting injured away from the set. For the final year, Stapleton, Philip Winchester and the rest of the returning crew (including Robson Green, Michelle Lukes and Milauna Jackson as members of British special forces unit Section 20) will be joined by a set of actors with impressive action bonafides: * Michelle Yeoh, one of the greatest action stars ever produced by international cinema, and star of one of the best action movies ever made ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"); * Dustin Clare from Starz's very violent "Spartacus" franchise (plus fellow "Spartacus" alum Christian Antidormi); * Adrian Paul, who brandished a sword many times as star of the...

We’re in the penultimate episode of this season of Strike Back. And this just happens to be the episode that we’ve been waiting for since Comic Con. No great action movie (or TV series as the case may be) is complete without a fight on-top of a moving train. This episode has just that. You can check out the gallery bellow to see Stonebridge and Scott getting their Strike Back on, atop a train.
The cool thing about this sequence is that Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton did their own stunts. So when you see one hanging off a train and the other riding a bike in front of it, that’s not green screen or stunt doubles.
Here’s a clip from Episode 29. When we first met Locke, he “appeared” to just another pencil pusher up the ladder of Section 20. Now, he’s showing just how dark he can be,...

“Sergeant Damian Scott, do you have a death wish?”
If there are two styles of comedic scenes I like on Strike Back, it’s: (1) when Stonebridge and Scott are trapped behind but find time to riff about topics and (2) when Scott is flirting with a new girl.
This new clip from Strike Back Season 3 Episode 8 is something of a combination of those two styles. We have Scott and Piragova trapped in a jail cell. The two begin to argue, but Scott can’t help but add in his patented come-on lines – even when he’s the butt of the joke.
Also, if any of the Section 20 fans out there haven’t heard the news, Philip Winchester was just cast in a Joe Mazzello (The Pacific, The Social Network) indie flick, entitled Undrafted. It will be the directorial debut for Mazzello. The film will also feature Matt Barr (Hatfields and McCoys...

Strike Back Season 3 Episode 4
We’ve got an exclusive clip from this week’s episode of Strike Back. If you thought Leatherby was vile before, you’re going to want to check out what he has in store for Kamali’s family this week.

Hey, check it out, fans of awesome things. One of the most awesome things on TV right now, Cinemax’s “Strike Back” is returning to the airwaves tonight for its third season (fourth season if you’re counting the British version). That’s right, there’s finally a reason to stay home on Fridays and watch TV! (Or, er, just DVR it and come back and watch it later. I mean, what is this, 2008?) Check out a preview of “Strike Back’s” Season 3 premiere episode below: Enjoying a long-deserved vacation, Scott and Stonebridge are recalled after a fellow Section 20 member dies while pursuing the elusive terrorist al-Zuhari in Beirut. Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton return as Stonebridge and Scott, respectively, along with Rhona Mitra as their boss and the always criminally underused Michelle Lukes. Robson Green and Milauna Jackson join the current season.

Let the Columbian jungle assault begin.
Cinemax has just released a new clip from the Strike Back season 3 premiere. It’s explosive – literally.
The premiere kicks off some time after the tragic events of last season (I still raise a glass for Maj. Oliver Sinclair every so often). Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) get called back in from vacation when a member of section 20 is killed in the field.
Editor’S Pick: Philip Winchester Talks Spetsnaz, Rare’ Stunts and Torment
Scott and Stonebridge’s latest mission sends them into the jungles of Columbia, where they track down a lead on the Al-Zuhari terrorist responsible for their teammates death.
The clip below gives us a taste of Stonebridge and Scott getting their Scarface on outside of a cartel compound in Columbia.
Check out the photo gallery below. Photos feature Stapleton, Winchester, Milauna Jackson, Raoul Trujillo, Zubin Varla and Rhona Mitra.

Having negotiated the treacherous waters of getting approval for his pilot episode, Spike Lee has now started casting a new boxing drama that he is producing and directing for HBO. Set in Newark, New Jersey, Da Brick is all about a young man who is released from juvenile detention on his 18th birthday and tries to find himself and his place amidst those around him.
That 18 year old, Donnie, will be played by John Boyega, hot-as-you-like off the back of his charismatic performance as Moses in Attack the Block, which after great reviews in the UK is starting to get real word-of-mouth traction in the Us as well. Also cast are Milauna Jemai (FlashForward) as Donnie’s mother and Julito McCullum (The Wire’s Namond Brice) as his best friend Kevin.

After a cameo in The Hangover brought Mike Tyson back into the public eye a couple of years ago, his new career in showbiz is now "flourishing" with a reality TV show on Animal Planet and co-hosting duties for Comedy Central's roast of Charlie Sheen. But more importantly, he is currently setting up a boxing drama for TV with the help of Spike Lee and Entourage creator Doug Ellin. This week it was announced that HBO has ordered a pilot for the project, which is going under the title Da Brick (a reference to the Newark, NJ setting, which is also known as The Brick City). They've also already found a lead for the show in John Boyega, the star of Joe Cornish's breakout hit Attack the Block. Count me in. Tyson appeared on an episode of Entourage back in 2010, and at the time he told Doug Ellin...

The answer is John Boyega.
Currently starring in “Attack the Block,” Boyega has been cast as Donnie, a former juvenile delinquent who embarks on a personal journey toward redemption, THR reports. The character is based loosely on Tyson, though his name on the show (and the name of the show, itself) will be “Da Brick.”

As one of the clear new discoveries of the year, Attack the Block's John Boyega has quickly registered on Hollywood's radar, and he's just nabbed his first big Us job. Boyega has landed one of the lead roles in Spike Lee's new HBO drama Da Brick, which is based on aspects of former boxer Mike Tyson's youth.
Spearheaded by Entourage creator Doug Ellin Da Brick will revolve around the titular character, Aka boxer Donnie (Boyega) and his friends and family.
