1989 to 1992 Apprenticeship as bank clerk at Dresdner Bank Hamburg. 1993/94 civilian service. 1994 to 1998 studied economics at the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics.
1992/93 Worked as a bank clerk. 1998 to 2001 personal assistant to the President of the Hamburg Construction Authority, 2001 to 2004 scientific assistant in the "European Transport Affairs" department of the Hamburg Construction and Transport Authority, 2004/05 head of the "Federal Transport Affairs" department of the Hamburg Urban Development and Environment Authority.
Since 1989 member of the DGB and since 2003 member of FIAN. Since 2003 chairman of the Langenhorner Bürger- und Heimatverein e. V. (Langenhorn Citizens' and Local History Association).
Member of the SPD since 1989, since 2000 chairman of the SPD Langenhorn-Süd. Member of the Hamburg-Nord district assembly from 2001 to 2005.
Member of the Bundestag since 2005.
