Shane MacGowan’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians.
“Every time I heard him sing I heard the truth, and my heart filled up with humanity,” wrote Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He proceeded to share an anecdote about the time he met the Pogues singer: “I once saw him sing with the Pogues at a festival in the late 80’s. It was so beautiful and I was reduced to tears. I approached him, and gushed “Man that was so beautiful, thank you etc…” He looked at me and burst into laughter, accidentally spitting beer in my face, and it was not thoughtless or mean at all, he was just so humble and being a dude singing it seemed absurd to him to be elevated, like I was doing to him. I have never been a church going man or a religious man, but if I ever felt baptised,...

The Beatles are undoubtedly the most acclaimed rock band ever and yet it’s easy to miss the scope of their influence. Elvis Costello gave everyone a rock ‘n’ roll history lesson when he decided to break down how The Beatles inspired artists as varied as Nirvana, Prince, and Green Day. On the same wavelength, Paul McCartney had a lot to say about The Beatles’ importance.
Elvis Costello said The Beatles’ influence paved the way for Outkast and Green Day
In a 2020 piece he wrote for Rolling Stone, Costello ruminated on the Fab Four’s impact. “The word ‘Beatlesque’ has been in the dictionary for quite a while now,” he said. “You hear them in Harry Nilsson’s melodies; in Prince’s Around the World in a Day; in the hits of Elo and Crowded House and in Ron Sexsmith’s ballads. You can hear that Kurt Cobain listened to...

President Donald Trump is facing criticism after he was spotted holding a note card reminding him to actively listen to survivors of the Parkland, Florida, massacre during a meeting at the White House on Wednesday.
The Washington Post mocked the president’s talking point, which read “I hear you,” in an analysis titled “This photo of Trump’s notes captures his empathy deficit better than anything.”
Author Aaron Blake wrote: “That’s at once pretty striking for a president and not at all striking for Trump. Through tragedy after tragedy, empathy has been the quality clearly missing from Trump’s reactions.

With Richard Curtis' upcoming romantic comedy adding a little time travel tweak to the proceedings, it perhaps follows that the accompanying soundtrack is a bit scattershot. There isn't much in the way of contemporary hits, but whatever was rockin' your dial a few years ago—or even a few decades ago—has made its way into the movie. Feeling like some sugary, manufactured pop? This forthcoming disc has you covered with tunes by Russian one-hit wonders t.A.T.u (guess which song?) and Brit sensations Sugababes. The Cure and Nick Cave bring some veteran experience to the table, while The Killers, Ellie Goulding and Amy Winehouse (R.I.P.) bring it home for the kids. Ben Folds reminds everyone he's still around with a new version of "The Luckiest" while we're just glad to see Ron Sexsmith in the mix as well. "About Time" opens on September 6th in the U.

Singer-songwriter Suzie Ungerleider -- known to many as Oh Susanna -- revealed this week plans for her new album "Namedropper" have been delayed after being recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
In a Facebook post on her site, Ungerleider said she noticed a lump in her breast a few months ago, "went to see some doctors, they took some tissue samples and came back with a positive result for breast cancer."
If there's any positive from the diagnosis it's the fact "all scans have indicated that the cancer has not spread deeper into my body."
Ungerleider also revealed she began chemotherapy roughly a week ago, describing it as if "I have drunk some kind of metallic cocktail and now I am suffering from a chemical hangover." The chemotherapy is expected to be in three-week intervals for around five months before she undergoes surgery with radiation to follow.

You don’t have to throw out Little Feat to make room for Fleet Foxes
Google “ways to discover new music” and no less than 89,800,000 results pop up. Tons of websites, blogs, radio stations broadcasting the old-fashioned way and streamlining online, not to mention music sites like Spotify and Radio Paradise are dedicated to the proposition that all people deserve to discover new tunes.
So why are so many of our needles stuck in the “classic rock” groove, playing the same albums since 1992 -- or 1968? Not that there’s anything wrong with continuing to cherish the music we grew up with. For our generation, it would be hard not to: Some of the most enduring music (at least rock, soul, jazz and blues) was made when we were coming of age. But what I find frustrating is the misbegotten mindset that nothing new is worth listening to.

Due in theaters this weekend in Canada and in limited release in the U.S. (and currently available on VOD), by now you hopefully know that Sarah Polley’s sophomore release “Take This Waltz” is one of our favorite films of the year so far. Starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Canadian actor Luke Kirby, and comedienne Sarah Silverman (in a great dramatic performance) the film is an unflinchingly raw look at love, infidelity and the often selfish choices we make in our lives (read our review here).
And apart from being emotional, moving, melancholy and at times, difficult to watch, the film's textured funny, happy/sad moods are well buttressed by an excellent soundtrack, and again, one of our favorites of the year so far. This achievement follows a series of previous major victories for the Win Butler-fronted collective, including a win for Album of the Year at this year's Grammys, Best Album at the Juno Awards (essentially the Grammys of Canadian music), and Best International Album at the...

Yesterday afternoon, Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham and CBC DJ Grant Lawrence announced the 10 albums that comprise the Short List for this year's Polaris Music Prize, the Canadian award that honors the country's best annual album without regard for sales or popularity. Past winners include, of course, Fucked Up, Caribou and Final Fantasy's extravagant He Poos Clouds. This is a big year for Polaris, as the sum the winning artist takes home has increased from $20,000 to $30,000 in spite of recent Canadian arts funding woes.
Any such list is bound to generate its share of complaints about omissions and inclusions, but at least as an American onlooker, it's enough to generate a fair share of envy, too. There is no relevant stateside equivalent to Polaris, where Colin Stetson's outbound saxophone excursions (I mean, this dude is bringing circular breathing toward the mainstream, something I never thought I'd type) and Braids' sexually...

The initial long list of nominees for Canada's prestigious Polaris Music Prize have been announced, and the list is predictably eclectic. Indie superstars Arcade Fire and legendary iconoclast Neil Young top the list that includes veteran acts such as Ron Sexsmith, Stars and Sloan as well as newcomers like Dirty Beaches and Diamond Rings. From the long list of forty, ten finalists are selected to compete for the top prize. That short list will be announced July 6. The award (including $30,000 cold, hard cash) was initated in 2006 and is given to the top Canadian artist as voted by a jury composed of 227 Canadian music writers....

Hot Docs, North America's biggest documentary film festival, kicks off its 2011 run on April 28 in Toronto. Jam-packed with documentaries running through May 8, Moviefone Canada will be there from start to finish, offering up looks at some of the festival's noted films.
What hasn't been said about Ron Sexsmith? The musician's musician, this Canadian singer/songwriter (and damn fine guitarist) is a favorite of the greats. Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, Chris Martin, Feist and Sir Paul McCartney think he's one of the world's great melody makers and lyricists. Critics prop him up and industry types listen to his records, but every honest-to-God fan has been hard-won for the shy troubadour. Will Sexsmith ever be a household name, or will he always be an acquired taste?

"Do you know why you're here?" asked Emmylou Harris after strumming out the first song from her hour-long set at the IFC Crossroads House yesterday afternoon. "We're playing pretty much all of the new record before it comes out."
How lucky can you get? Harris - songwriter, coveted vocalist, legend - took the stage with producer and guitarist Jay Joyce, and multi-instrumentalist Giles Reeves, her collaborators on a soon-to-be-released album of warm, spacious, country-tinged songs. Her first solo studio release since 2008, the album is called "Hard Bargain" after a Ron Sexsmith song and the record's title track. The show marked Harris and crew's second time attempting to recreate the album in a live setting (the first was in a showcase at Antone's the evening before), and Harris embraced the inevitable hiccups and false starts with humor and good spirit. "This is our spring training," she said.

The wireless internet situation has turned me into something of a nomad. I wander downtown Austin seeking one of three things: free drinks, free food, or free wifi. Obviously there's wifi all over the convention center, but it's packed most of the time so I tend to seek out slightly less crowded places to sit my ass down and write. Today, I'm writing in the Sobe Lizard Lounge enjoying some damn thing or another that has a Sobe drink in it. After this I'm hunting down food. Here's your Monday night TV:
7:00pm: "Inside the Actors Studio" on Bravo. Guest this week is Bradley Cooper.
8:00pm: "The Bachelor" on ABC. 15th season finale. Where some lucky lady will with the ultimate prizes. Not the Bachelor himself, he kinda sucks, I mean the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tabloid "exclusives" that she'll be able to give in the next few weeks.

On Tuesday (March 1), MTV News celebrated the birthdays of two of the biggest pop stars in the world at the moment in Justin Bieber (who turned 17) and Ke$ha (who is now 24). Today, the cake frosting is extra thick for Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who is now 34 years old.
The world first got wind of Martin back at the turn of the century when he starred in the video for Coldplay's "Yellow," a massive worldwide hit. Though they were initially dismissed for being a tepid Radiohead soundalike, they have gained the respect of the critics and the love of the fans by growing into their own sound (and selling millions of records and filling stadiums along the way). Their debut album Parachutes was great, but 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head (which featured the hits "In My Place" and "Clocks"), 2005's X&Y ("Fix You") and 2008's...

When a musician has a voice and style as immediately identifiable as singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, the producer often has a bigger hand than usual in making sure that any given album isn’t “just another Ron Sexsmith record.” For Long Player Late Bloomer, Sexsmith works with fellow Canadian Bob Rock—best known for producing some of the biggest albums by Metallica, The Cult, and Mötley Crüe—and the result is Sexsmith’s most polished, poppy record since 2004‘s Retriever. Rock and Sexsmith set the tone with the sunny opener, “Get In Line,” a likeable enough song that ...

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

Glee's Cory Monteith headed back to his homeland this past weekend to host Canada's 25th annual Gemini Awards.
The awards show, which was broadcast live on November 13th on the Showcase and Global channels, honored the best of Canadian television and was held at Toronto's historic Winter Garden Theatre.
Highlights of the show included a tribute to Degrassi, which has been on the Canadian airwaves for 30 years now. Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries, a former Degrassi: The Next Generation cast member, was on hand for the tribute and remarked how happy she was to be part of the Degrassi family. Other highlights included performances by Elvis Costello with Feist, Ron Sexsmith, Kendel Carson and Barry Bales. Monteith was particularly stoked by Costello's appearance and performance and tweeted this picture of the two with the words "no big deal."
Monteith was beyond excited and honored to be apart of the awards show.

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

Killing time with a few good songs
It's evident from I Shot A Man in Reno that author Graeme Thomson possesses an undying obsession with songs of mortality. To pursue the subject through such terrain as murder ballads, gangsta rap and '50s teen schmaltz, and to make it a topic of conversation with musicians ranging from Ron Sexsmith to Ice T, one almost has to. Though at times it comes off as a magazine think piece that's vastly outgrown its 3,000-word slot, the book becomes increasingly compelling with each grim avenue it explores.

Maybe Ron Sexsmith should put out a lousy album one of these days just to make it easier to appreciate how consistently terrific his output is. Instead, Exit Strategy Of The Soul continues an unbroken string of sweet, wounded pop dating back to the early '90s. Without pushing, Sexsmith lures listeners into a world filled with disappointments offset by the hope of a better tomorrow, even though there isn't a lot of common sense backing up that hope. Most of the characters drifting through Exit Strategy look to the future for answers, whether they're overwhelmed by life in general ("The Impossible World") or seeking solace in another ("Music To My Ears"). Sometimes the optimism they find isn't just misplaced, it's destructive, as in the politically metaphorical boozing of "One Last Round." While Sexsmith's songs haven't changed that much over the years, the production behind them has....
