There are very few anime series and movies that can portray the coming-of-age genre as brilliantly as Kana Akatsuki’s Violet Evergarden. The series is one of the best representations of character growth and observance that fans feel in the development of Violet, the protagonist of the story. However, her character development takes a big turn in the sequel movie.
Violet’s entire journey is based on figuring out the three words(I Love You) that her major Gilbert Bougainvillea left her with. She explores her destiny and tries to find out what those three words mean but the movie changes everything as she finds out that Gilbert is still alive making it one of the biggest twists in Violet Evergarden’s story.

Historical manga can still seem fantastical even in a world grounded in realism. Where they lack in the expansive world-building a fantasy series may have, the sense of realism convinces readers that these events truly could have happened. To make sure this happens, of course, one needs a strong protagonist.
Unlike different genres, the protagonist here is functioning during a period in history and, as such, is the reader's eyes and ears within that world. The challenges they may face within a historical manga could be influenced by the time, politics, and social status. The skills these protagonists need are not based on powers or magic, but on wit, communication, and human strength. Not only do these protagonists have to be physically strong, but mentally and emotionally as well.

In much of today’s filmmaking, from superhero movies to TikTok videos, time is compressed, speeding the action along much faster than it could ever go in reality. In the animated worlds meticulously crafted by Japanese director Naoko Yamada, however, life moves gloriously, realistically slow. Schoolchildren walk at a measured pace, pausing outside their classrooms to remove shoes. A grandmother pushes the bridge of her glasses up her nose. A tram stops to let a single passenger off before slinking away again. It’s all in the service of expressing,...

Confession: I haven't seen a lot of anime films in my life and am by no means an aficionado, but the ones I have seen I really enjoyed. Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle are all awe-inspiring classics. Last year I wrote about When Marnie Was There for its tenth anniversary and loved it. So, because of that, I was excited to watch The Colors Within, written by Reiko Yoshida and directed by Naoko Yamada, and is in American theaters now. With a coming-of-age story and what seemed like a slight supernatural premise, it was right up my alley. Sadly, The Colors Within is the first anime movie I've seen where I walked away thinking it was just okay. Instead of capturing the magic of those past examples, it flies low and aims to be cute. That's a start, but with its threadbare plot, it wasn't enough for a feature film.

Anime filmmaker Naoko Yamada thinks of herself as a cameraman. “I don't think of it like anime is made by drawings,” she tells The A.V. Long celebrated for their breathtaking animation, imaginative storytelling and profound themes, the films produced by Studio Ghibli tend to resonate strongly with their audiences, hitting emotional high notes that have made them fan-favorites decades later. Among Studio Ghibli’s myriad themes includes an anti-war stance, with many of their films advocating for harmony in the place of violence. These anti-war messages, sometimes woven subtly and sometimes standing out starkly, resonate across cultures and generations.
These anti-war films don’t merely oppose conflict, but rather, they advocate for compassion, community and connection. From the post-apocalyptic landscape of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind to the role of the ruler as seen in The Cat Returns, these films challenge viewers to analyze their own stances on violence by offering an anti-war message.

The Colors Within doesn’t demand your attention. It’s too small in scope and ultimately fails to follow up on what seems like an interesting premise. Even without living up to its premise, this serves as a unique effort from Japanese anime studio Science Saru (who recently produced the excellent Scott Pilgrim Takes Off for Netflix) because of its lack of stakes and quiet feel.

Mentor characters often change the course of a protagonist's character development. They teach their pupils, and sometimes give them a leg up when they could use some help. Studio Ghibli films show how mentors can have varied personalities and come from different walks of life. Some mentors are gray-haired and sage-like, and some become unlikely but wonderful teachers.
A mentor's priceless advice teaches a person how to carry themselves through the world. Their goal isn't to solve all their mentee's problems for them, but to encourage them, and help give them the right skills. Animate Times -- a news outlet run by Japan's largest anime and manga retailer, Animate -- has unveiled its top five picks for the most tear-jerking anime of all time. Modern classics largely lead the charge, with the list populated by favorites from the 2010s.

Also featured in the lineup are Violet Evergarden, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Angel Beats!, with each relatively recent anime best known for serving pensive explorations of grief and friendship. The following contains light spoilers for The Colors Within, written by Reiko Yoshida, directed by Naoko Yamada, and distributed by Gkids.
Anime is a medium that many people turn to for heightened comedic hijinks, impossible fight sequences, glorious displays of magical power, or extended journeys to fantasy worlds. However, anime is just as accomplished at getting to the core of the soul and highlighting what it means to be human. Truth be told, slice-of-life dramas and coming of age narratives are some of anime's most effective stories. Anime's pristine visuals aren't always necessary to bring such stories to life, but it can result in something truly special when it's done right. On that note, The Colors Within isnt necessarily a revolutionary story that redefines the medium.

Most of Ghibli's protagonists are young children whose journeys through paranormal worlds are fun and lighthearted while touching on some existential themes. Imaginative and exhilarating enough to keep all younger viewers enthralled yet not lacking in substance older fans could appreciate, Ghibli movies perfect the formula of family-friendly entertainment. However, not every film produced by the studio is as gleeful as Ponyo or My Neighbor Totoro.

Studio Ghibli characters depict many kinds of heroism and bravery. There are many traits that can make a character honorable and heroic. Often, doing the right thing isn't as easy as finding and wielding a legendary sword, or assembling a band of amazing warriors.
Often, heroism isn't easily won, and a character may still be frightened and riddled with self-doubt as they do the right thing. Being kind in an unkind or uncertain world is noble, and resisting the cycle of violence is heroic. These characters don't advertise how admirable they are; they just choose to put one foot in front of the other, keeping loyal to their values and morals while remaining open to learning from new perspectives.

With only a few more weeks until T he Colors Within premieres in Japan, the upcoming Naoko Yamada-directed anime film released a brand new trailer today – though, it’s a little more on-beat for the creator who enjoys showcasing her characters goofing around and showing their personality through movement. The special dance trailer, presented in a TikTok-like format, follows the three main characters, Kimi, Totsuko and Rui, dancing along to “Sui Kin Chi Ka Moku Dotten Amen” with moves that are reminiscent of those popular with those who upload short-form dance videos. The dance choreography was created by the dance troupe The Powerpuff Boys, who are known for choreographing Sekai No Owari's mega-hit "Habit" and Ano’s viral tune “Chu, Tayousei.” Yamada drew the storyboard for the trailer with animation director Takashi Kojima drawing all the cuts. The trailer was inspired by the staff members getting closer during production and dancing while working,...

Japanese creator Naoko Yamada, whose latest film “The Colors Within” screened in the main competition at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, continues to challenge herself.
“Animation provides me with hope, yearning and challenges. It allows me to expand my imagination infinitely and, at the same time, it challenges me to see how much imagination I actually have,” she told Variety via an interpreter following the premiere of her latest.
“I want to see what I can do without limiting myself to any particular subjects.”
It introduces a young Totsuko, a closeted synesthete who can actually see others as colors. She becomes fascinated with honor student Kimi – and her dazzling shade, who has dropped out of school but pretends to attend for her grandmother’s sake.
Kimi also has a hidden talent – she loves to play the electric guitar and dabbles in songwriting. Later, when the two start to become friends,...

However, Taichi Ishidate, the director of Violet Evergarden and Violet Evergarden: The Movie, did not want to make a sequel film because of the same romantic element, and he had some pretty valid reasons for it.

From masterpieces like Spirited Away to impeccable romances like Howls Moving Castle, the famed studio has told stories that have withstood the test of time. The beauty of Studio Ghibli movies lies in their ability to emotionally invest the viewers with their surreal plot progression, beautiful animation, and characters for whom the audience would cry.
While all Studio Ghibli movies deserve praise, some titles have gone by without the recognition they deserve. Over nearly 40 years, Studio Ghibli has produced some of the most memorable and heartwarming anime of all time. With more than two dozen animated feature films to its credit, this isn't any surprise, though the fact that none of them have made the transition to the small screen most certainly is.
In fact, so far, Studio Ghibli has only made a handful of forays into the realm of television, none of which have starred or featured the characters that helped make the animation house famous. That being said, almost every anime film bearing the Studio Ghibli trademark is worthy of getting the spinoff series treatment, even if some are more deserving than others.

Studio Ghibli produces many genres of films. When Hayao Miyazaki first presented Princess Mononoke, some studios were surprised by the amount of violence in the story. Miyazaki responded that violence will happen and that it's important to show people (especially adolescent and older audiences) what to do with violence, and how to control it.
Studio Ghibli characters need to fight sometimes to protect others and fight defensively to arrest greater violence. It's a difficult and delicate balance to portray. Some Studio Ghibli villains and antagonists can be quite violent, like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind's Kushana, but the best Studio Ghibli fighters know how to control themselves, and when it's the right time to refrain or to take action.
