I’m not going to kvetch about American Idol failing to reward one of its dozens of worthy grads with a Thursday-night performance slot — there are only six weeks left, after all! — and instead using it to promote the doing-just-fine-already former X Factor judge Demi Lovato.

The exciting shows are finally here, "American Idol" fans. It's the Top 13 finalists, with a theme of "This Is Me." Could you vague that up for us, "Idol"? That is akin to my all-time favorite theme, the Season 6 episode that was like "Songs Gwen Stefani Has Heard Of (Maybe)."
Just as an Fyi, we're not going to recap all the video package shenanigans. Let's get down to business with the performances.
1. Dexter Roberts, "Aw Naw," Chris Young
Terrible song choice. This is a song trying to so hard to be a dirt-kickin' country rock number, but Dexter does not have the swagger to pull that off yet. He's just standing there. His voice isn't bad, but there are a few bum notes and the entire performance lacks energy. He'll stick around, I'm fairly sure, but he's going to have to step that up.

Denver-based five-piece band Varlet has crafted one of the most stunning records of 2011. The band's distinct sound is a hauntingly beautiful blend: It's folky, psychedelic and jazzy. The group talked with HuffPost over email about its new album The Drifter, what inspires them to make music and lead singer Lilly Scott's stint on "American Idol" Season 9.
Who would you cite as your main influences lyrically and sonically?
The Beatles, Billie Holiday, Devendra Banhart, the Doors, Tom Waits. The Beatles are self-explanatory, and Billie Holiday is vocally [Lilly's] biggest inspiration. As a band, lyrically and musically, we really seem to emulate a mix between the Animals meets the Doors.
Non-musical inspirations also include: shitty bars, Carl Sagan, Shakespeare, Bill Hicks, traveling. We are constantly inspired by our environment and try to embed our experiences into sound.
How does the songwriting process work for Varlet?
We've gone in all directions with it.

After the "American Idol" travesty that was Pia Toscano getting sent home last week, the Top 6 men and the two girls America has let tag along are singing songs from the movies. The show starts off with a dramatic re-living of the Pia debacle, complete with People's Most Beautiful Person Jennifer Lopez in tears. Oh, the humanity.
So let's see how the cinema songs treated the "American Idol" contestants. Here are the Top 8 Idols, from best to worst:
1. Casey Abrams, "Nature Boy," Nat King Cole, "The Boy With Green Hair"
Casey's rockin' the upright bass and old-timey microphone. This is a very weird choice for this show - at least do the "Moulin Rouge" version. Casey is really chewing his words and notes, it's atonal and strange. It's like Caesy is jamming on stage at a jazz club. $10 will get you $20 Simon would call this "self-indulgent." For those of us who were hoping to see a couple more new names when American Idol kicked off its Hollywood auditions, well, we were definitely disappointed. Sorry, no Lilly Scott-style discoveries at the moment.
What we got was an hour-long look back at all of our "early favorites." Some of them are favorites, sure, but then there are some who the judges just want around as long as possible -- a reality I've long accepted in my three years of writing about Idol. Anyway, it's the Hollywood round, which means less of the mundane and more of the good stuff. But yes, that's a bit up for debate.

"American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6, the David vs. David finale of Season 7 and the game-changing season of Glambert.
Now let's look at Simon's last season.
Season 9 contestants in order of elimination:
Lacey Brown
Paige Miles
Didi Benami
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
Tim Urban

Opinions have been largely negative surrounding the ninth season of Fox's hit singing competition show -- but is this really the worst season in "American Idol" history? We don't think so.
We think this is more a case of the collective "Idol" viewing audience having some short-term memory loss. Sure, in comparison to the David vs. David showdown of two years ago and the spectacle that was Adam Lambert coupled with whiskey-voiced Allison Iraheta and cutie-pie Kris Allen, Season 9 seemed a little boring.
But let's not forget the seasons prior to seven and eight. Do you even remember the black hole that was Season 3?
Season 9's Paige Miles is arguably the best 11th-place finisher ever, with the possible exception of Alexis Grace. Unfortunately for Paige, the week she was eliminated she was very obviously sick and had had no exposure prior to the Top 24, thus no fan base to get her through the rough patch.

Will Young has to be one of our favourite reality TV stars ever, certainly one of the most talented and we were delighted to see him cross the pond to sing on last night’s American Idol final performance show.
On a night that was supposed to be all about the two finalists, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox (check out our critique of their performances here), former Pop Idol winner Will wowed the audience as he closed the show with his UK hit single, Leave Right Now.’
The track has been used as the goodbye song for the 2010 season, so it seems fitting that Will performed it live on the penultimate show. Better still, Will’s recent exposure through Idol has led to him conducting a whirlwind promotional tour in America. After his performance last night he put on a five song show for some industry bosses and during the...

After 43 episodes (and 54 hours you'll never ever get back), the ninth season of "American Idol" is finally down to just two. And I'm live-blogging every last second of it. (Although, not literally every second because that would be quite cumbersome. And boring.)
Will it be Crystal Bowersox, a dread-sportin' diabetes-havin' mother who's doing it all for her adorable baby (who I insist on calling Jack Bowersox)? Or will it be Lee DeWyze, a paint salesman from Mt. Pleasant, Illinois who was kicked out of school for behavior problems and who now loves wearing gray jackets and crying in front of large groups of people?
For a season that has been short on the drama, this week's finale is a bit of a nailbiter. While Crystal was the early stand-out who maintained her lead for most of the season, lately she's been stumbling with poor song choices. Lee always had the...

It's the week before final exams on "American Idol," so it's probably too late to start wondering, "What if?" As in, "What if we had a different top three? What if Lilly Scott or Katelyn Epperly hadn't been chucked off the show far too early and were still bringing their expectation-defying artistry to the stage?"
It's certainly too late to imagine our expectations might be proven wrong when it comes to the performances of Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze and Casey James. Former "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee has released a new version of her single "Terrified" with a somewhat unlikely duet partner: "Chuck" star Zachary Levi.
The video for their collaboration was released Friday (May 7), and while it doesn't sound all that different from the song as it appears on her album "Unbroken" (she did that version with Jason Reeves). What's impressive, though, is that Levi pretty much holds his own with her. He's got a pretty good singer-songwriter voice, to our ears (maybe that's in the new Intersect?).
So that's at least four versions of the song we've heard to date: McPhee's original, the one that Didi Benami performed during "American Idol's" Hollywood round, "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi's performance on "Lopez Tonight" a few weeks ago and now this one.
Watch the video below. What do you think of Levi's singing chops?

Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott were eliminated on the same night of "American Idol" Season 9 back in March but were reunited for a performance on Wednesday, May 5 in Katelyn's hometown of Des Moines, Iowa.
The Des Moines Register says that Lilly took the stage first (after a brief intro from Katelyn, which is the second video below) and played a set of "short, folksy original songs, plus a few covers." She was joined onstage by the mandolin player form band Varlet, Cole Rudy.
Katelyn took the stage shortly at 9 p.m., immediately launching into a cover of John Mayer's "Stop This Train." She tells the Register in the interview below that she met Lilly on group night for "American Idol" and got closer when they became roommates when they got sick at the same time. She also says it's great to back in Des Moines and in front of such a warm crowd.

Don't mind the sobbing America, that's just me preparing for Casey James' inevitable departure. Of course, tonight's elimination could be another shocker like Siobhan's last week (or god forbid, Lilly Scott and Alex Lambert's weeks ago), but I'm pretty sure bleating like a barn animal when trying to hold a high note will get just about anyone eliminated from American Idol, no matter how good Kara Dioguardi thinks they look shirtless.
Need a Refresher on Last Night's Show? Check Out our Performance Rankings.
Of course I knew Casey was never going to win American Idol, but what I didn't expect was how upsetting the prospect of his elimination might be. It's true, in a lackluster season ... I still care. It's going to be a ratings bonanza when Lady Gaga appears on "American Idol" on Wednesday (May 5). But, it also sounds like the singer is making out pretty well herself.
Ok! magazine reports that Lady Gaga demanded a fat check for $250,000 for the "Idol" performance. The producers apparently thought that was ridiculous.
"They thought it was just crazy she was asking for so much money," a source tells the magazine. "It was just too much money to pay talent for a performance."
Obviously, the producers sang a new tune and paid up. We don't know exactly what they paid her, but we're sure it couldn't be much less than what she asked for.
We hope the top five Idol mentor, Harry Connick Jr., is still happy with what he was paid. If not, we're sorry, dude!

Do you think Lady Gaga's pre-taped "Idol" performance is worth $250,000?

"American Idol" Season 9 favorite Crystal Bowersox is not just liked by voters and the judges -- singer Melissa Etheridge is also a fan.
Etheridge tells the ladies of "The View," about seeing the "American Idol" finalists a few nights ago and Crystal Bowersox reminding Etheridge that they met a few years ago when Crystal went backstage at one of Melissa's shows in Chicago.
"I signed her guitar and that's the guitar that she uses," Etheridge relays. "She's really sweet, I like her. She's real." Apparently Etheridge's kids actually recognized the Melissa signature on Crystal's guitar before Melissa did one night when they were watching "Idol." How cool is that?
Crystal Bowersox is definitely the frontrunner so far, can anybody beat her? Also, we think this Melissa Etheridge love can only mean one thing -- duet for the "American Idol" finale! Make it happen, Fox.

If you were totally dismayed that Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott were booted from "American Idol" during the semi-finals, you can see these "Idol" BFFs together May 5 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Des Moines Register is reporting that the duo will appear at 8 p.m. Ct on Wednesday, May 5 at the Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar and Restaurant in West Des Moines. Doors open at 5 p.m. for the 21+ show. Cover is $8 at the door.
We wish we still lived in Iowa -- we would totally go! Epperly previously told the Register that she was also performing June 3, but that concert is no longer scheduled. She also sat down in an interview with the Register along-side fellow Des Moines native Olympian Shawn Johnson. The girls had reality show stories to swap, as Shawn was the winner of the "Dancing With the Stars" Season 8. Watch their interview below!

Siobhan Magnus performs on "American Idol" Wednesday

On Wednesday, MTV's "American Idol" experts confidently predicted that big Michael Lynche would be facing elimination for a second time this season after a so-so outing on Shania Twain night. But a few hours later, Mike was saved (again) from the bottom and it was caterwauling, glassblowing apprentice Siobhan Magnus who was ousted, leaving this much-heralded "girls" season on "Idol" down to one female front-runner, Crystal Bowersox.
"Siobhan's elimination was a pretty big shocker," MTV News' "Idol in 60 Seconds" major domo Jim Cantiello said. "In the 'Idol' pundit world, all bets were on Michael Lynche to go home."

The "American Idol" top 6 with Shania Twain
Photo: Fox
This week, the top six had to sing Shania Twain songs, but the contestants were completely upstaged by Shania herself, who displayed a perfect blend of characteristics from all the "Idol" judges. She had Simon's sharp insight, Paula's sweetness, Kara's songwriting chops and Randy's passion for peculiar cardigans. Plus, it was so nice of Shania to bring along the woman who takes care of her horses. (Seriously, who was that expressive lady sitting next to Shania all night? She should sit next to every guest mentor from now on.)
Ironically, when it came time to sing the Shania Twain songbook, the guys fared better than the two remaining women. Casey James got serious (and seriously good) with "Don't!," Aaron Kelly turned a song about making love into a tender tribute to his mama,...

"American Idol" producers apparently sat down and said, "Let's party like it's 1998-2002!" Hence, Shania Twain week is upon us.
I don't mean to slam Shania (whom you may remember as a guest judge on the Chicago audition episode earlier this season, where she praised John Park's "bottom end"). The woman's a record-breaking superstar who single-handedly supplied Delilah with enough hit songs to last a thousand phone calls. Sure, Shania hasn't put out an album of new music since George W. Bush's first term, but who cares? Ms. Twain was one of the most charismatic, genuine and insightful mentors this season. (And here's when Adam Lambert fans get upset…) "They're all singing my songs and I don't want them to hate me if they don't make it into the next round," she neurotically said in her intro package, channeling every single mom on Earth. Tonight's American Idol is all about charity and giving back. So hopefully American Idol finally gives us what we've been waiting for all season ... the elimination of Tim Urban. Think of it as charity to our ears or giving back to the idea that American Idol is a singing competition. Think of the children! The children! Or, if not the children, think of Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and every other person who's been sent home instead of Tim Urban. Do it for them, as well as yourself, America.
Donate: to Idol Gives Back
But tonight is about so much more than eliminating Tim Urban; it is about having musicians who wouldn't dream of being on American Idol perform on the show, all in the name of a good cause. It is about American Idol using its behemoth stature for good, not evil. It is about donating whatever you can to...

After some iffy performances in the "American Idol" semifinals, many fans questioned Katie Stevens making the top 12 over other female contestants like Lilly Scott and Katelyn Epperly. Well, the 17-year-old was out to prove those critics wrong in the finals with her powerful performances of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" and the Beatles' "Let It Be."
But Simon Cowell lambasted Katie's take on Elvis' "Baby What You Want Me to Do" for being too loud and "annoying," and she was sent packing, along with Andrew Garcia, on Wednesday night.
We caught up with the high-schooler on Thursday (April 15) to find out what she thought of Kara and Simon's back-and-forth about what kind of artist she was and much more.

Former American Idol contestant Didi Benami has admitted that she would like to collaborate on some original material with Crystal Bowersox.
The singer was voted off the Fox TV show last week and told Entertainment Weekly that she and Crystal had already discussed writing together.
“I really wanted to do an originals night. I would love to collaborate with Crystal. We’ve already talked about it. We like the idea of writing together,” she said.
Benami also revealed that fellow eliminee Lilly Scott texted her saying that the judges should have saved her last week.
“Lilly text me the night I left the show, she explained. “She said, ‘They should saved you!’ I was like, ‘Thanks Lilly, they should have saved you too!’ You never know what is going to happen.”

We look back on the best and the worst of previous Lennon/McCartney covers.

In choosing their John Lennon and Paul McCartney-penned tunes for Tuesday night's (April 6) live show, did the "American Idol" hopefuls of season nine look back at the history of Lennon/McCartney renditions on the reality show? From Clay Aiken's inaugural Beatles performance up through this season's top 24, the "Idol" past offers success stories and cautionary tales. Let's take a gaze back at the good, the bad and the ugly of the Beatles songbook on "Idol."
The Good
Brooke White, "Let It Be" (season seven): White's simple, breathy take on the final Beatles' single was a perfect example of a true "Idol" breakout performance: the point at which we forget you're a contestant on a reality show and start to envision you as a professional recording artist.

You might think the Lennon/McCartney songbook is untouchable, but American Idol has done it before. Many times, in fact. Remember, in the first week of the semifinals this year we had three Beatles songs in a row from the since-eliminated (and for the most part, still much missed) Katelyn Epperly, Haeley Vaughn and Lilly Scott.
Thus, my hopes for this week's performances are needlessly elevated. Last week's performances have seen several contestants finally step up to the plate: Casey James and Lee Dewyze turned in pretty strong performances, Andrew Garcia got close to reclaiming the spark of "that song", and Crystal Bowersox was still being, well, Crystal Bowersox. Sure, most of this year's contestants are still dead weight, but I have enough reason to believe that we're going to see an upward trajectory of some sorts this week. Somehow.

You think I’m wrong? Just look at the evidence! Neither boy can sing, they both have great hair and inexplicably managed to make it to the Top 10!
When it comes to Tim Urban’s baffling presence on American Idol this season, I feel like a broken record. Why is he still around busting eardrums and taking up space while fabulous singers like Lilly Scott are send to musical oblivion (aka Home)? But then came my epiphany: it’s Sanjaya Syndrome all over again!
Surely you remember Sanjaya Malakar - the contestant on Idol’s sixth season who was as famous for his hair (hello, mohawk) as he was his inability to sing (his screeching is still permanently etched in My brain). Who does that sound like? Oh yeah, Tim Urban.
If you don’t believe me, check out the similarities! Both boys are 20, both get by on the strength...

Even though the judges predicted that a female would win this season, women are quickly becoming an endangered species on "American Idol." Last night's ouster of a teary-eyed Didi Benami leaves the ladies with just three representatives: Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Katie Stevens (who's slummed it in the bottom-three for two straight weeks and is in serious danger during next week's Lennon/McCartney-themed show).
Yet while we mourn the passing of yet another "Idol" lady, we can't say we didn't see this coming. Didi ditched what everyone thought was her gal-with-a-guitar wheelhouse (on display during tunes like Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon") and became a fragile crooner with no defined identity. Last week's head-scratching rendition of Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" had our resident "Idol" guru Jim Cantiello wondering if Didi had embraced "performance art [as] a defense mechanism against her stage fright." We might never know the answer,...

American Idol still has a lot of work to do before season 9 can be considered a success. Idol is still in the process of removing the worst of the Top 24. Nearly every contestant seems to be playing it safe. But maybe this will be the week it all changes, maybe as Lilly Scott sang, "A Change is Gonna Come."
As you know it's R&B and Soul week and Usher is serving as a mentor. The Top 10 will certainly need it, save perhaps Michael Lynche, who's at home in the genre. Maybe Andrew Garcia too, but I've given up on him long ago, so I don't have many expectations. I've learned better this season.

If the ouster of Lilly Scott, Katelyn Epperly and Alex Lambert was a miscarriage of reality show justice, "American "Idol" voters have been committed to rectifying the damage these last two weeks. Lacey Brown got the heave-ho last week, and on Wednesday (March 25) Paige Miles was given her walking papers. Who couldn't see either of those coming?
For two elimination shows running, our "Idol" panel has batted a thousand, which honestly says more about the predictable nature of the show than it does about our prognostication talents. As Mj Santilli of Mj's Big Blog put it, Paige was "monumentally awful" during her performance of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)." She knew it. The judges knew it. Voters knew it. Our panel knew it. End of story.
After four weeks of "Idol" forecasting, here are the current standings.

Paige Miles is the latest contestant to be eliminated from this year’s American Idol. After a lifeless performance of the Phil Collins classic Against All Odds, the American public responded by failing to vote in their thousands.
In last night’s bottom three were the weakest performers. Tim and Paige, who the judges claimed had both stopped competing to win weeks ago. Both had given singularly out-of-their-depth performances of classic songs, with Tim Urban slaughtering Queen’s classic Crazy Little Thing Called Love. They were joined in the bottom three by teenage Idol Katie Stevens, whose ability to consistently sing out of tune led me to wonder how she had managed to slip through to the Idol Top 12. Every single one of them deserved to be in the bottom.

This season of American Idol (TV) has been totally unpredictable and each week we are forced to say goodbye to four talented contestants. The talent is strong but once again, like every season, the uncontrollable nerves are getting in the way, making it hard to pick favorites. It is still a little early to get too attached to some performers, but that has not stopped the judges from already picking their favorites. The emotional roller coaster also known as American Idol (TV) came to a close for four Idol hopefuls including Katelyn Epperly, Todrick Hall, Alex Lambert, and Lilly Scott. When you get this far in the competition, it is very hard to say goodbye to your dream of winning, which we all saw firsthand when the talented Alex Lambert was voted off. With tears in his eyes, the broken singer put his best foot forward and sang his heart...

Lacey Brown is eliminated in tonight’s ‘American Idol.’ Here is a little recap of what happened in tonight’s episode on Fox, firstly, guess what rule is back into play this season? The judges are allowed to save a contestant who has been voted-out — the catch is they can only do it once and it has to be before the Top 5. This will definitely change the dynamic of the show a bit, we will see how things go.
David Cook performed the song “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” showing judges and viewers that there was still some talent in this season’s Top 12. Cook spoke with Ryan Seacrest after his performance and said he’s working on his next album and is going to Africa to be part of “Idol Gives Back.” Paige Miles wound up in the bottom three, Siobhan is obviously safe, along with Paige Miles and Lee Dewyze.

Do you agree with HollywoodLife.com’s own Idol judge?
Blake Lewis knows talent when he sees it – and the former American Idol Season 6 runner-up isn’t at all impressed with Season 9 contender Tim Urban.
“How did this guy get picked to stay on the show when people like Lilly Scott have to go home?!” the incredulous 28-year-old wonders on his weekly HollywoodLife.com American Idol blog.
Funny, Blake, we were thinking the exact same thing! Check out the rest of Blake’s highlights from the March 16 episode of Idol here!
Highlight One: Michael Lynche starting out the show with “Miss You”. This is one of my favorite Rolling Stones titles, and Michael’s arrangement was so fresh and so clean, clean. He gave it a nice RnB swagger. It was a great way to start the show, and it seemed like he was the only one to channel The Rolling Stones the whole evening.

Who was your favorite performer on American Idol last night?
When Simon Cowell told Crystal Bowersox that she got beaten by Siobhan Magnus March 16 on American Idol, I wanted to smack him upside the noggin. Crystal Bowersox is the only reason to Watch Idol this season, and the judges should be bowing down at her Birkenstock-clad feet.
The 24-year-old Elliston, Ohio native did her thing with an acoustic guitar, and practically had me crying with her beautiful rendition of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” during Rolling Stones week. Another reason to love Crystal? She wore a peacock feather in her hair in tribute to pal Lilly Scott, who was kicked off the show last week.
As a New Englander, I have to show some hometown pride to Cape Cod, Mass. native Siobhan Magnus, who did some serious vocal gymnastics with “Paint It Black.” That is an impossible...

Last night on American Idol, it was finally time for the Top 12 to perform. It was Rolling Stones night, a theme that proved to be too daunting for almost all of the contestants. But of course, like most Idol weeks this season, the notable exceptions were Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox. Let's take a moment of silence to remember Lilly Scott, who probably would have hit a home run this week. Let's take a smaller moment of silence to remember Alex Lambert because we miss his soul and, more importantly, we miss his mullet.Without a doubt, Magnus owned the night. Magnus sang "Paint It Black", with the kind of drama and ...
