In a recent interview with Febri, renowned anime director Hiroyuki Imaishi talked about why he believes it would be impossible to recreate an anime like Kill La Kill today.
Reflecting on a recent screening event where he revisited past episodes, Imaishi revealed that he was struck by the realization that recreating the magic of Kill La Kill would be nearly impossible today.
Imaishi explained that this feeling wasn’t new and surfaced with every project he undertook, but it was especially pronounced in this instance. He emphasized that Kill La Kill was a product of its time, achievable only under the specific conditions and creative environment that existed back then.
Moreover, the production of Kill La Kill didn’t involve much of a planning (even if it was more than what was done during the making of his earlier work Gurren Lagann) and Studio Trigger didn’t have the resources...

Jeannie Epper, the peerless, fearless stunt performer who doubled for Lynda Carter on Wonder Woman and swung on a vine across a 350-foot gorge and propelled down an epic mudslide as Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, has died. She was 83.

In 2007, Epper received the first lifetime achievement honor given to a woman at the World Taurus Awards and ranks among the greatest stuntwomen of all time.

Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration gathered an eclectic group of well-wishers including Neil Young, Snoop Dogg, and The Chicks for the first of two performances at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Saturday. Watch fan-captured footage from the event below.
“Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90, A Star-Studded Concert Celebrating Willie’s 90th Birthday” kicked off with perhaps the roster’s youngest performer, Billy Strings, who played two Shotgun Willie staples, “Whiskey River” and “Stay a Little Longer.” He later returned to back Bob Weir on a rendition of “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” from Nelson’s classic 1975 LP, Red Headed Stranger, which received further looks from the likes of Norah Jones, Beck, and Tyler Childers.
Country as a genre was well represented between The Chicks, Margo Price, Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, and more, but the set also spanned Nelson’s many musical phases and stages with covers from Tom Jones,...

Bryan Cranston may be best known to fans as a meth/PopCorners kingpin. Still, he is now expressing interest in playing one of the greatest marijuana proponents ever, Willie Nelson.
When asked by NME if there was a musician he would like to play, Bryan Cranston said, “Willie Nelson comes to mind. The hair and the beard. I think there’s some physical resemblance. He’s very old and wrinkled, and I can relate to that…So I wouldn’t have to wear a lot of makeup.” Surely the 66-year-old Cranston looks a little better than the 89-year-old Nelson!
Bryan Cranston added there is a lot to admire about Shotgun Willie, although the actor doesn’t exactly share every defining trait with the singer. “Willie’s had a fascinating career—as a writer and as a performer, and as a free speech person, being anti-war and on the forefront of...

It's an old adage that comedy doesn't travel well, but some shows definitely fare better than others. As a Brit, I've met many Americans with a creepy zeal for quoting sketches from "Monty Python's Flying Circus" at me. "Red Dwarf" is hugely popular where I live in the Czech Republic. And the bawdy BBC sitcom "'Allo! 'Allo!" sold to 56 countries -- the cast was reportedly greeted "like the Beatles" during a visit to Bulgaria. I once had the pleasure of dining at a pizza restaurant in the Serbian capital of Belgrade called 'Allo! 'Allo! where all the pies were named after the characters.
But one British sitcom that doesn't seem to travel well is also one of our most enduringly popular, "Only Fools and Horses." The show follows the fortunes of the Trotter family, headed by a dodgy wheeler-dealer whose dubious get-rich-quick schemes always go disastrously wrong. It aired from...

The stars must have formed a fortuitous alignment. Somehow, a great wrong has been righted and order has been restored to the universe. Kino Lorber, under its Kl Classics brand, has just released “Sunset in the West,” the first-ever high definition Blu-Ray edition of a Roy Rogers Trucolor western. This may not sound like a big deal to some people, but for the initiated—those who grew up watching Roy on the big screen at countless Saturday matinees in the 1950s— it is monumental. Because, until now the only Roy Rogers movies available for home viewing were dark, faded, and badly edited transfers released first on VHS and later DVD by Republic Studios. Republic treated Roy’s movies with criminal disrespect. The studio let the movies fade away with in their vaults, and then sold them to TV where they were butchered to fit time slots.

Roy Rogers, Singing Cowboy of 1940s and 1950s Hollywood. Known for his affable characterizations and, both on and off screen, “traditional values” stance, the King of the Cowboys – step aside, John Wayne & Gene Autry – toplined the “subversive” 1938 musical Western Under Western Stars. Sound bites: Remembering Roy Rogers & 'subversive' singing cowboy movie 'Under Western Stars' It is a typically hot day in Palm Springs on May 5, 2001, as I sit outside the Palm Springs Museum at the invitation of Roy Rogers' oldest daughter, Cheryl, while a star in his remembrance is placed on the sidewalk in front of the building. I am seated next to Ruth Terry, a lady with whom I am totally unfamiliar, but who, it transpires, was a leading lady to both Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. As we talk, it is obvious that she is also a very sensible and charming lady. I express my vote for Roy Rogers over Gene Autry, and...

This charming Roy Rogers oater could reboot interest in vintage ‘series’ westerns. Basically a film for little kids, it’s earnestly played by all concerned and director William Witney’s direction sparkles. The added filip that makes the difference is the beautifully restored Trucolor image — Roy’s wonder horse Trigger is indeed magnificent. I listened carefully, but I don’t think Roy actually says, “Yippie-ki-yay, M_____f____r.”

Paul Henreid: From Eleanor Parker to ‘The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse’ (photo: Paul Henreid and Eleanor Parker in ‘Between Two Worlds’) Paul Henreid returns this evening, as Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of July 2013. In Of Human Bondage (1946), he stars in the old Leslie Howard role: a clubfooted medical student who falls for a ruthless waitress (Eleanor Parker, in the old Bette Davis role). Next on TCM, Henreid and Eleanor Parker are reunited in Between Two Worlds (1944), in which passengers aboard an ocean liner wonder where they are and where the hell (or heaven or purgatory) they’re going. Hollywood Canteen (1944) is a near-plotless, all-star showcase for Warner Bros.’ talent, a World War II morale-boosting follow-up to that studio’s Thank Your Lucky Stars, released the previous year. Last of the Buccaneers (1950) and Pirates of Tripoli (1955) are B pirate movies. The former is an uninspired affair,...

Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…. …the third consecutive week that the Geezer, also known as me, used that hokey lead. Pathetic? You decide. But as long as we’re here…what’s the Man of Steel doing this time? Looks like he’s holding his ears. That must mean that he’s somewhere near the end of his hit movie, at the climactic battle, before a kind of lengthy denouement. Because that was one noisy climax. But first, a geezerly digression. When I was young – and we’re talking really young, like six or seven – I much enjoyed the “cowboy pictures” I saw at the neighborhood theater on Friday nights. The dime Mom gave me bought a cartoon, maybe a Three Stooges feature and two cowboy pictures with real good guys: Hopalong Cassidy, Sunset Carson, Tim Holt, Red Ryder, and...

Eleanor Parker Now on TCM Palms Springs area resident Eleanor Parker, who turns 91 next June 26, is Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of June. One of the best actresses of Hollywood’s studio era, Parker isn’t nearly as well-remembered today as she should be despite three Best Actress Academy Award nominations (Caged, 1950; Detective Story, 1951; Interrupted Melody, 1955), a number of box-office and/or critical hits, and a key role in one of the biggest blockbusters of all time (The Sound of Music). Hopefully, the 34 Eleanor Parker movies TCM will be showing each Monday this month — beginning tonight — will help to introduce the actress to a broader 21st-century audience. Eleanor Parker movies "When I am spotted somewhere it means that my characterizations haven’t covered up Eleanor Parker the person. I prefer it the other way around," Parker once said. In fact, the title of Doug McClelland’s 1989 Eleanor Parker bio,...

He's been all but forgotten, but the Lff's restrospective should spur new interest in the singing cowboy and his palomino, Trigger
It's as if Roy Rogers never existed. The "singing cowboy" has almost entirely disappeared from our screens. The only time you're likely to catch a glimpse of him is when Bob Hope movie Son of Paleface turns up on television – it features Rogers gently sending himself up, as well as his beautiful palomino Trigger, surely the most good-looking horse in the history of westerns, performing a dance.
Rogers (whose real name was Leonard Slye) made more than 80 films. Early in his career, he was one of the original Sons of the Pioneers, the cowboy singing group whose songs included Tumbling Tumbleweeds (featured in The Big Lebowski) and Cool Water. He had his own radio show, his own TV show and there was even a restaurant chain bearing his name.

Early in his career, he was one of the original Sons of the Pioneers, the cowboy singing group whose songs included Tumbling Tumbleweeds (featured in The Big Lebowski) and Cool Water. He had his own radio show, his own TV show and there was even a restaurant chain bearing his name.

Yeah, that’s him, little Denny, aged six or seven (or maybe even five), dragging the kitchen chair across the linoleum and putting it next to the icebox. He climbs up on it and then he’s close to Mom’s radio. He knows which knobs to turn, he knows how to find what comes from the speaker, what is very important: his programs.
Every weekday afternoon, after school, from 3:30 to six – dinner time, Dad’s nightly return from Work (and work is also very important, though Denny doesn’t know why) – Denny listens to Tom Mix and Superman and Hop Harrigan and Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy (what other kind of boy could there be?) and what may be his very, very favorite, Captain Midnight. Mom has her programs, too – Ma Perkins and Young Doctor Malone and some others – but Denny thinks they’re no better than okay.

At this point I am pretty much sure everyone out there in movie fan land is exhausted from Top 10 lists and reflections on the year of film 2010; not the best year for new film, but hardly the worst - boiling it down to 10 choices proved difficult enough, and as you will see below, I cheat and bring it up to a dozen, why should be be constrained by the conventions of a round number? Personally, I spent more time (and money) on the festival circuit the past year than any other in over a decade (more than six years at Twitch - where does the time go?) of doing this in Toronto and beyond, and I imagine my list below is a reflection of that. By my count only 4 films below have seen any sort of significant release in North America, but hey, I hope that this list will serve...

Christie's, the New York Auctioneers have placed cowboy singer/actor Roy Roger's famous stuffed horse 'Trigger' up for sale.
The golden palamino, originally named 'Golden Cloud', was foaled July 4, 1934 on a ranch co-owned by Bing Crosby. In 1937, the horse, standing 15 hands high and registered with the Palomino Horse Association and Stud Book Registry, was sold to Hudkins Stables, a Hollywood provider of animals.
Golden Cloud's early acting resume included playing the horse of 'Maid Marian' in the 1938 feature "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with actress Olivia de Havilland famously riding Golden Cloud side saddle.
Casting horses For the film "Under Western Stars", star Roy Rogers fell in love with Golden Cloud and purchased the palomino for $2,500.
"He would turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change", said Rogers at the time, re-naming the horse 'Trigger', as he was "quick on the trigger".

Attention Roy Rogers fans (with deep pockets). The remains of Trigger, Rogers’ co-star in My Pal Trigger and other 1940s Republic Westerns, will be auctioned by Christie’s in New York City. The auction includes not only what’s left of Trigger but also a number of items from the now-defunct Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Branson, Missouri, according to an Associated Press report. (Dale Evans was Rogers’ wife and frequent co-star. In later years, Evans could be seen on Christian TV shows.) Trigger — who, of course, had no say on the matter — was preserved with taxidermy in 1965. The presale estimate for the dead horse ranges from $100,000 to $200,000. In this rough economy — or in any type of economy — animal-welfare charities would be thrilled to get that sort of money.

Snowy greetings from Park City, Utah, home of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival! This year, in addition to introducing the world to many of the independent films we'll be talking about for the next 12 months, Sundance embraced new media. Through official programs and partnerships as well as non-official events, the possibilities and promise of the Internets as a creative and distribution medium was the subject of much discussion. On Friday, January 22nd, the fest kicked off with Digital Dive, an all-day, immersive event aimed at upping the digital media literacy of attending filmmakers. Jigsaw Global produced the event in tandem with the Festival. Panels were held at the New Frontier on Main (Nfom), the home venue for the New Frontier strand of the fest, which focuses on experimental work that "explores the limits of traditional aesthetics and the narrative structure of filmmaking." In other words, the section features lots of cool,...

Believe it or not young Americans, Roy Rogers is more than just a fast food chain — he’s an icon, too. Though certainly not as prevalent today as he was many moons ago, Rogers was a popular cowboy actor in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, and he was one of the biggest box office draws of his time. Now it looks like the King of the Cowboys is hitting the dusty trail once more and riding into the new millennium.

At the Sundance Film Festival in January, a funny little movie called Baghead joined American Teen, Frozen River, and The Wackness as a festival darling. The clever low-budget film skips deftly between comedy and suspense, following four struggling actors who are trying to write a script while battling numerous distractions: a beer and vodka haze, copious amounts of sexual frustrations and rejections, and a man wearing a paper bag over his head. One of the film's stars is Ross Partridge, an acting veteran of 20 years with a smattering of solid credits (CSI, As the World Turns, The Lost World: Jurassic Park) but no breakthrough. Now he has realized his dream of playing a lead in a film bought for theatrical distribution, by Sony Pictures Classics, at Sundance. But this success means more for where — and what — it started than where it ended up, in Utah. The way Partridge came to...
