After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Chelsea Handler is looking to The Daily Show as her next act.
While appearing on the latest episode of The Daily Beast‘s The Last Laugh podcast, the comedian says she’s very seriously pitching herself to take over the late-night gig, which Trevor Noah officially bowed out of last month. Handler was announced as a guest host ahead of Noah’s final episode on Dec. 8, along with names like John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn and Sarah Silverman, as well as current correspondents Roy Wood Jr. and Desi Lydic.
“As soon as Trevor [Noah stepped down from The Daily Show] and they were saying they needed guest hosts, I was like, yeah, let’s go, I’ll go do that too. And that’s a perfect job for me. That’s a great gig,” she told Matt Wilstein. “We’re definitely going to have conversations about that,...

Trevor Noah is saying goodbye to The Daily Show after seven years.
The comedian gave a tearful goodbye to his fans in his final address at the desk, thanking everyone who has ever watched the Comedy Central show and giving particular praise to Black women for their support.
“I’m grateful to you every single one of you. I remember when we started the show, we couldn’t get enough people to fill an audience,” he said, noting that’s how comedy has always worked.
“Then I look at this now and I don’t take it for granted ever. Every seat that has ever been filled to watch something I’m doing is always appreciated because I know the empty seat that sits behind it,” he added. “Thank you to people who watch, the people who share the clips, everyone who’s had an opinion, everyone who’s been kind enough and gracious enough,...

On September 29th, when comedian Trevor Noah announced he would be leaving "The Daily Show" after hosting the political talk show for seven years, audiences were shocked. The in-studio audience responded with audible gasps, and viewers at home were equally astonished. Now, a new profile of Noah for The Hollywood Reporter reveals that we weren't the only ones: even his crew didn't know what was coming that day.
"The Daily Show" showrunner Jen Flanz tells THR that the moment she, head writer Zhubin Parang, and the rest of the crew realized what Noah was doing, it was as if they "lost all feeling in our bodies." In a five-minute segment, Noah spoke at length about the show's unexpected impact and the gratitude he felt for his time as its host, before saying, "I found myself thinking throughout the time, everything we've gone through — the Trump presidency, the pandemic, the more...

Trevor Noah explained why he told literally nobody that he was leaving The Daily Show before announcing it in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Noah told THR that his surprise announcement back in September was truly a surprise. No one from his co-workers and longtime Daily Show producers to executives at Comedy Central and its parent company, Paramount, knew it was coming until he told the audience during an episode taping that his time at the show was up after seven years (his final show will be Dec.

On Sept. 29, seven years and a day after assuming his role as host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah requested a few extra minutes during that night’s program. He wanted to thank his audience for sticking with him, which his producers Ok’d as long as he kept it brief. There was a lot to get through that evening.
He whipped through the day’s headlines and a remote segment with Ronny Chieng. Then, with guest Iman waiting backstage, Noah leaned into camera. There was nothing in the teleprompter. A script, he reasoned, didn’t feel right for the moment. “Before we go [to commercial],” Noah began, a ball of nerves and excitement. He had been chatting with correspondent Roy Wood Jr. the day before, he told the audience, when Wood reminded him that it was their seventh anniversary on the air. The milestone hit harder than Noah expected.

Barack Obama will appear as a guest on the Nov. 17 episode of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Variety has learned exclusively. The episode airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m.
In conversation with Noah, the former president will discuss the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum and critical issues facing America and the world today. The interview will be Obama’s third with Noah, and his first in-studio. He previously appeared in a 2020 virtually taped episode, and did one of his final interviews as president with Noah at the White House.
The interview comes the week after the midterm elections that won the Republican party control of the House of Representatives — ending two years headed by the Democrats — and just days after Obama’s successor, the twice impeached Donald Trump, announced his bid to return to the White House in 2024.

Meet the new team running CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” It’s largely the same team that has been managing the late-night program for years.
Colbert tells Variety he has no plans to bring another executive producer on board at present after Chris Licht left to take over management of Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN in the spring.
“I am always open to producing the show in the most efficient manner. Right now, everything feels fantastic,” says Colbert in an interview to discuss “Pickled,” a new comedy-sports special he has produced with Funny or Die for CBS. “I miss Chris dearly as my friend. I wouldn’t want to run CNN.”
In September, Matt Lappin was named a co-executive producer of “The Late Show,” working alongside two other co-EPs, Tanya Michnevich Bracco and Denise Rehrig. Lappin has worked with Colbert for more than 25 years, including on “Colbert Report” and...

Trevor Noah’s successor may be someone “Daily Show” viewers haven’t seen on the program in some time — if ever.
Comedy Central, which has already indicated it is considering the show’s current group of faux “correspondents” and contributors as potential candidates to succeed current host Trevor Noah, is also mulling contenders from outside their ranks, according to people familiar with the matter.
The Paramount Global network could look for a host well-versed in political comedy, or simply someone who has straddled the divide between Hollywood and Washington. People like Samantha Bee, the former “Daily Show” correspondent who went on to host her own topical-comedy showcase on Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS (cancelled just this past July), or Kal Penn, the actor who logged a stint in the Obama administration and hosted a short-lived late-night show on Disney’s Freeform, could have the experience Comedy Central is seeking.

Exclusive: The Daily Show is charting its post-Trevor Noah course and it might involve more than one host.
Deadline understands that Comedy Central is considering hosting duos and trios as it looks to replace the comedian behind the desk.
Noah revealed that he was leaving the nightly talkshow at the end of September with his final show planned for Thursday December 8.
There’s been much talk about who will replace him but it seems that it may not be only one person.
One suggestion is that Noah will be replaced by a committee of hosts. We hear that a number of the correspondents are in consideration for the positions.
For instance, one possibility is that Roy Wood Jr. and Desi Lydic could co-host.
The show’s other correspondents include Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Dulcé Sloan as well as gonzo reporter Jordan Klepper.

Trevor Noah has set his exit date.
The Daily Show host will end his time in the hot-seat on Thursday December 8.
It comes after the comedian surprised everyone, including his Paramount Global boss Chris McCarthy and his colleagues, after announcing his departure during an afternoon taping on September 29.
Noah shocked late-night fans by announcing that he was leaving the Comedy Central series but it was clear that a plan hadn’t been formulated with no exit date announced last month.
That has finally been worked out and he’s now got a couple of months left hosting the show.
The Daily Show will return in January on Tuesday January 17 with the company saying that “additional details” will be forthcoming. Whether ViacomCBS will have found a permanent new host by then is unclear or whether one of his trusted correspondents – Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Dulcé Sloan or Roy Wood Jr...

Less than a year ago, Paramount Global found a new reason to cheer about the midnight hour.
In December, the company did something few of its competitors could do: It struck a deal with Google to have three different late-night hosts weave a promotional message about the search-engine giant into their programs. On the night of December 15, Stephen Colbert, James Corden and Trevor Noah all nodded to Google during CBS’ “Late Show” and “Late Late Show” and Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” The ad deal represented a vote of confidence in a sturdy portfolio of late-night programs that spanned broadcast and cable.
Now, a good chunk of the talent in that collection is gearing up to move.
Paramount is facing the exits of both Trevor Noah and James Corden, just as scrutiny of late-night TV is beginning to match that of its counterparts in primetime. It’s no secret that...

“It’s been wild,” Trevor Noah told his audience after revealing that his “time is up” on hosting The Daily Show.
The news certainly was wildly unexpected.
Deadline understands that Noah told his studio audience of his departure before telling many members of the Comedy Central series’ staff — news that blindsided many.
The Daily Show sources said that it was “imperative” for Noah to share the news with his fans during Thursday’s taping as he wanted them to hear it from him first.
But the fact that Noah told a few hundred strangers, admittedly some die-hard fans but likely including many tourists keen to get a ticket to a show, before he told some members of his production team was hard to take for some.
Noah is thought to have quietly re-upped his deal earlier this year, and he and his team were recently celebrating scoring seven Emmy nominations...

This marks its fifth consecutive nomination in the main late-night category, although it, along with all of the other shows, continue to lose out to Oliver, who has won six years in a row.

“The Daily Show” is hitting the road for midterms again. This fall, host Trevor Noah will take his Comedy Central late-night series to battleground territory in Atlanta, Ga.
While on-the-ground election coverage is nothing new for “The Daily Show,” which has previously moved to Ohio and Florida for midterms, the decision to head to Georgia for the first time is “highlighting key races and broader voting issues,” per the Paramount show. This also marks the show’s first time back on the road in a while, having just returned to its own home studio in New York City back in April following two years of doing the show remotely amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Noah will be recording full “Daily Show” shows from the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta leading up to election night to cap off the late-night talker’s “Votedemic 2022” midterm election coverage. Episodes are set to air nightly from Oct.

“I constantly suffer from impostor syndrome and fraud complex,” Patrick Schumacker, an executive producer on ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” says. “But several writers with much better and much healthier perspectives told me that at the end of the day, everybody wants you to do a job and is rooting for you. So, don’t panic. It’s all part of the facilitator’s role. But I am someone who does have a tendency to constantly panic. And I think over time, I’ve had to unlearn that and not just assume that everybody is out to get me.

These days, comedy news shows have become essential viewing by giving accurate information to viewers with a much-needed dose of levity. But aside from working remotely, how many shows have drastically altered their format to deal with the current situation? That was the case with Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.”
The long-running series, which celebrates its fifth anniversary with Noah as host this September, altered their runtime, their information, and their intimacy levels in order to create a beacon of light in the darkest of times.
“We basically made a new show with the old show’s DNA in it,” long-time head writer Dan Amira said to IndieWire. Working from home to create a “socially distanced” interpretation of the show was just the start, and for showrunner and executive producer Jennifer Flanz that was enough to make her think it would be impossible.

The 2020 Emmy-nominated variety talk series — Comedy Central’s “Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” TBS’ “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” HBO’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and CBS’s “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” — all had to quickly pivot at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This came with a one-part content adjustment to balance discussion of the virus and how the government was handling it into their programs, but it also included a severe production change, as the hosts had to set up at-home studios.
“Late Show” executive producer Chris Licht says in late February, before the official stay-at-home orders and production shutdowns, Tanya Michnevich Bracco, supervising producer and executive in charge, brought up the scenario that a spread of the virus could mean they wouldn’t be able to come to work.

Even the coronavirus pandemic couldn’t stop Comedy Central’s long-running “The Daily Show.” Trevor Noah’s late-night showcase, now produced remotely and dubbed “The Daily Social Distancing Show,” has expanded to 45 minutes per night during production, for the first time since the franchise launched in 1996.
The Emmy-nominated team behind the show – executive producer and showrunner Jennifer Flanz, supervising producer and writer David Kibuuka and writer Dan Amira – joined Variety senior editor Michael Schneider on Aug. 21 for an exclusive Q&a in the Variety Streaming Room presented by Comedy Central.
Flanz reflected on the final live show, in which the team produced a goodbye tribute to their live audience. When the showrunners made a joint decision to close production in March, her team had thought work-from-home would only last two to three weeks.
“We were pretty equipped to just quickly shift into — we’ll just do some quick videos here...

They’re the names that fly by when the credits roll. But every member of the production staff on a late-night talk show is a foot soldier waging a daily battle against time and limited resources to make the show come alive.
Whether the series is a freight train that runs Monday through Friday or a weekly effort to synthesize and satirize the news, production values in late-night have come a long way since the days of overflowing ashtrays on Johnny Carson’s desk.
Today, there are video packages that need to be assembled, stunts that need testing, sketches that need costumes and moments of Zen to conjure. The topicality of these shows also means coordinating a small army to complete an endless series of creative and technical tasks under punishing deadlines. The unpredictability of the President Trump-era news cycle only adds to the pressure.

“The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” is losing one of its four executive producers, as Steve Bodow will leave Comedy Central’s late-night franchise after a more than 16-year tenure.
Bodow, who has been with the show since 2002, was one of four executive producers on the show, along with Noah, Jennifer Flanz and Jill Katz. Bodow, Noah and Flanz oversaw creative, while Katz focused on the production side. There are no plans to replace Bodow, who will depart in early 2019.
Bodow has served in a variety of roles on “The Daily Show,” including head writer, and co-executive producer. He has been an executive producer since 2013, spanning Stewart’s last two years and the first three for Noah. Bodow was also consulting producer for “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper,” after serving as Ep on the hour-long “Jordan Klepper Solves Guns” special.

Robin Thede remembers everything about the afternoon last October when she taped the first episode of her Bet late-night series “The Rundown With Robin Thede.”
Wearing a velvet-green suit and black pumps, she strode out onto the stage at CBS Broadcast Center on 57th Street in Manhattan with fierce determination to add the voice of an African-American woman to the late-night TV landscape.
“People kept asking me if I felt nervous or felt pressure,” Thede recalls. “I kept saying, ‘No, I’m ready.’ ”
As momentous as that first taping was for Thede, an equally important moment came months earlier at the “Rundown” production offices across the street from the stage, when her core team of writers and producers assembled for the first full day of work. Thede, a seasoned comedy scribe who was head writer for Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” looked around at a staff...

Exclusive: I’ve learned that three veterans of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart – co-executive producers Adam Lowitt, Jennifer Flanz and Steve Bodow — are being tapped as new showrunners for Comedy Central‘s long-running late-night show. They would succeed Rory Albanese, who last week left to move to Los Angeles for primetime comedy development under a two-script deal with Warner Bros. TV. Lowitt, Flanz and Bodow, all multiple Emmy winners for their work on the show, are expected to be upped to executive producers. Lowitt has been on The Daily Show for eight years, having started in 2005 as a segment producer; Flanz has been on the program for seven years, having started as a coordinating producer in 2006; Bodow has been a writer on The Daily Show for a decade, including a stint as head writer.

The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards “often referred to simply as the Emmy, is a television production award, similar in nature to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment, and is considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), Grammy Awards (for music) and Tony Awards (for stage).” The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded the 2010-2011 Primetime Emmys® for programs and individual achievements last night in Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
