It’s (as I’ve mentioned in the past) been a great year for Irish film, and (here I go again) it continues with Sensation starring Domhnall Gleeson (yes, he’s part of that Gleeson family). A story that follows that life of Donal who is the sole heir to his fathers farm. After his father passes away, Donal finds himself flush with cash and in between keeping his mate Karl in pints, he hesitantly phones for the services of a prostitute called Kim (Luanne Gordon). From here the story takes the occasional influence from Pretty Woman. But this is no Julia Roberts rom com, it flaunts around the whole client / hooker relationship that was so prevalent in Pretty Woman. Anyway, Kim proposes a business plan to Donal and his recently acquired wealth which would see the two of them set up their own agency. And I’m not talking about a advertising agency either.

This is the Pure Movies review of Sensation directed by Tom Hall, and starring Domhnall Gleeson, Luanne Gordon, Patrick Ryan, Kelly Campbell, Owen Roe, Eleanor Methven, Tracy Green, Madalina Alexe and Marie O'Neill. Sensation is screening as part of the London Film Festival, which Pure Movies is also covering on twitter @puremovies. A young man crouches by the gorse hedge of a field full of grazing sheep, pumping furiously at his crotch as he flicks the pages of a dirty magazine. Afterwards he heads back to an old farmhouse, when he sweeps kittens from his path as he navigates his way through piles of rubbish in the dank kitchen. He reaches the stairs, and there, upon the stairlift, sits a slumped figure – his father, dead. Instead of rushing to his aid, Donal (the promising Irish actor Domnhall Gleeson, who also pops up in Never Let Me Go) simply activates the mechanism,...

Sensation
Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Luanne Gordon, Patrick Ryan, Kelly Campbell | Written and Directed by Tom Hall
Following the death of his father, young Donal (Gleeson) inherits the family farm. Unfortunately Donal has no interest in agriculture; moreover he is almost wholly preoccupied with the five-knuckle shuffle. With his father no longer around, Donal is driven by his loneliness, grief and near total lack of social skills to arrange a meeting with call girl Kim (Gordon). Circumstances conspire to bring the two together and they begin both a relationship and a business partnership when Kim reveals her ambition to start her own brothel.
Sensation is a very black comedy that surprises and provokes in equal doses. The central conundrum of the film that both the audience and Donal are forced to question is the true nature of the relationship between the two leads. Is Kim exploiting Donal or vice versa?...

Rabbit Hole
Directed by John Cameron Mitchell, based upon the Pulitzer Prize winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire (he also wrote the screenplay), Rabbit Hole is wholly unlike any of his previous films (Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Short Bus) with a modest and down-to-earth story that explores the power of grief.
Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play Becca and Howie, a couple trying to come to terms with their marriage after the death of their son. Howie deals with it through sentiment, relentlessly staring at the videos of their son on his phone, with group therapy and friendship with another mourning parent, played by Sandra Oh. Becca keeps herself busy, she volunteers to bake a cake for her sister’s birthday, and then one day she sees Jason (Miles Teller), the teenage boy who killed her son. The two form a bond, engaging in light-hearted conversation at first; Jason...
