On Thursday, New York’s highest court overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, which has left those who had testified against the former movie mogul left to prepare for a potential retrial.
The court’s decision hinged on the finding that the trial judge had unfairly allowed testimony based on allegations that were not part of the case against Weinstein. The verdict reopened a painful chapter in America’s collective perspective of sexual misconduct by influential individuals, a movement that gained momentum in 2017 with a deluge of allegations against Weinstein. This manifested in the global survivor-led movement against sexual violence – #MeToo.
Advocates of the #MeToo movement emphasized that the ruling was based on legal technicalities and did not absolve Weinstein’s behavior. They asserted that the original trial had undeniably shifted societal attitudes towards sexual assault. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office expressed its intention to retry Weinstein, while one of his accusers,...

After being sentenced to 16 additional years last week, Harvey Weinstein is all-but-likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars. Weinstein is appealing his rape and sexual assault conviction, but for survivors, they feel justice has finally been served.
“Today, he will be sentenced. He cannot hurt anyone anymore,” Evgeniya Chernyshova, known in the case as Jane Doe #1, said at Weinstein’s sentencing on Feb. 23 at the criminal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
“I truly believe that this verdict, and the maximum sentence, will restore the faith in the justice system for many survivors out there,” Chernyshova told the judge, moments before Weinstein was handed his punishment.
Chernyshova was the only woman to make a victim impact statement in the courtroom at Weinstein’s sentencing, because she is the only accuser whose testimony resulted in the jury convicting Weinstein on three charges. But during the two-month trial, eight women...

Updated, Sunday, 6:37 Am Pt: Chris Cuomo is calling his termination from CNN “unwarranted” following a report that a junior colleague at another network came forward with an allegation of sexual misconduct.
“These apparently anonymous allegations are not true,” a spokesperson said. “To the extent that they were sent to CNN to negate what Chris Cuomo told his audience, he fully stands by his on-air statements about his connection to these issues, both professionally and in a profoundly personal way. If the goal in making these false and unvetted accusations was to see Mr. Cuomo punished by CNN, that may explain his unwarranted termination.”
CNN fired Cuomo after conducting a review of new information about the extent to which he assisted his brother, Andrew Cuomo, as he faced allegations of sexual harassment. The New York governor resigned in August.
According to The New York Times, attorney Debra Katz informed CNN on Wednesday that a client,...
