"It's not about Holly! This is about us." Sony has released an official trailer for a quirky, funky comedy titled Holly Slept Over, which is premiering straight-to-vod in early March coming up. This is one of those fantasies-yet-reality films about a husband who learns that his wife once slept with her college roommate. The story also explores their relationship struggles while trying to conceive, their friends who have lost their spark, and the tension that ensues when an old college roommate stays over for the weekend. Starring Josh Lawson, Nathalie Emmanuel, Britt Lower, Erinn Hayes, and Ron Livingston. This comedy looks a bit better than average, but still plenty cheesy, plus we've seen plenty of stories like this before. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Joshua Friedlander's Holly Slept Over, direct from YouTube: When Audra (Britt Lower) confesses to her husband (Josh Lawson) that...

Once upon a time, there was a thriving ‘spec script’ aspect to the Hollywood filmmaking industry. On a weekly basis – so the legend goes – agents would send out stacks of screenplays, written speculatively, and would broker deals with studios that would lead to interesting movies. Since around 2008, that ‘spec script’ aspect has been drastically reduced – and now the instances of speculative screenplays being purchased are relatively few and far between. For this reason, the news that Lionsgate has beaten out competition to snap up a ‘spec script’ titled Couple Up, is well worth celebrating.
The concept of the ‘spec script’ has been responsible for some of the most classic, iconic movies in modern cinema. Even some of the most successful film franchises – including Lethal Weapon and The Matrix – were borne of the sale of speculative writing. The change in the attitude of Hollywood studios toward speculative writing arguably coincided with...

After co-directing the nostalgic, comedic mess that was Dumb & Dumber To, one-half of the Farrelly Brothers is heading out on his own behind the camera. Deadline reports Bobby Farrelly, who has co-directed every film made with his brother Peter Farrelly (despite being uncredited on the original Dumb & Dumber), will go solo for One Night Stan. The project is described as following Stan, a serial commitment-phobe, who falls hard for a beautiful girl named Amy. When he decides to change his ways, he discovers Amy has her own ideas about relationships. But back in 2009, details were a bit more specific. The script from newcomer Joshua Friedlander was previously going to be directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (of Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle). At the time, the story was said to find Stan learning that his fiancee, Julie, has had more sexual partners than he did. So somehow he...

For the most part, I don't go blaming movies for people's actions, but sometimes I wonder if the super-quick weddings and subsequent divorces are all due to Hollywood's adoration of "love at first sight." Sure, the idea has been around forever, but forever ago, people weren't dating, getting to know each other, and then committing to each other as equals. Perhaps the theme provided a glamorization of life, and maybe a way to appease those young men and women doomed to arranged marriages, but these days, it's a ticket to strife. Yet no matter how much we evolve or regress as a society, love at first sight remains the main thrust of romantic entertainment.

There are two major problems with the premise of Pictures of You, a teen rom-com about a guy who finds a lost camera on the beach, develops the film, and tracks down a girl in one of the photos. First of all, losing a camera on the beach is way more likely to result in sand damage, water damage, or being built into a sandcastle. Second of all, what kind of teenager has a film camera? Is it just less romantic if the guy simply turns the damn thing on and sees her photo? Anachronisms aside, the Pictures of You script was featured on the 2007 Black List for the best unproduced screenplays, and now Variety reports that it's been picked up by producers David Permut, Dave Gross and Jesse Shapira. The screenwriter Joshua Friedlander also has another script, One Night Stan, over at Lionsgate. You know how this movie could...

Dave Gross and Jesse Shapira are busy. They're teaming with Youth in Revolt producer David Permut to make Pictures of You, the Joshua Friedlander script that was on the 2007 Black List. The teen-oriented romantic comedy will complement another funny picture Gross and Shapira have in the works: Goon, a hockey comedy written by Jay Baruchel and Superbad's Evan Goldberg. Variety reports on Pictures of You, saying that the film is set in a Florida seaside town and follows "a teenage boy who finds a lost camera on the beach. After developing the film, he ends up on a quest to find the girl of his dreams, whose picture was discovered inside the camera." Whimsical! Play this one in a double-feature with Amanda Seyfried's Letters to Juliet. Meanwhile, a mention at the bottom of the same trade report says that Gross and Shapira are also working on Goon, written...

David Permut, a producer on Youth in Revolt, has joined Dave Gross and Jesse Shapira to develop a project entitled Pictures of You, a teen romantic comedy that will certainly spin from the same territory as Revolt and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
Pictures of You was grabbed from 2007’s Black List of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood, and was written by Joshua Friedlander (Suicide Blonde). The film will center on “a teenage boy who finds a lost camera on the beach. After developing the film, he ends up on a quest to find the girl of his dreams, whose picture was discovered inside the camera.” I’d doubt the strength of a script with a log line like that, but if it was on the Black List, who knows?
Permut is currently looking for a director for the film, before casting begins. Would I be foolish to...

Are you suffering from the headaches, nausea and mild depression that can result from a lack of teen rom-coms in your life? Well, worry no more: producers David Permut, Dave Gross and Jesse Shapira are set to bring Pictures of You to the screen, from the script by Joshua Friedlander. The story follows a boy who finds a camera on the beach of a Florida resort town. He develops the film inside, and sees the girl of his dreams in the resulting photos. Cue a quest to find her despite the fact that she could easily turn out to be stupid, mean or simply not that good a match for our hero. The script topped the 2007 Black List of unproduced screenplays (and boy is the Black List getting some deals made today), but in the meantime Friedlander's sold another script, One Night Stan, to Lionsgate and is working on Camp Morningwood...

In the wake of The Hangover, it's once again clear that comedies do well if they have a strong concept rather than a big-name star attached. So say hello to One Night Stan, just bought for production by Lionsgate with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the team behind Harold and Kumar, prepared to direct. The story concerns a guy, called Stan, who's about to get married but is distressed to learn that the woman he loves has had more sexual partners than he has. Because of course it's a game of numbers and we should judge people on that basis. So she gives him a pass for one night to go and catch up - but things don't go according to plan as he tries desperately to get laid. It's all been written by Josh Friedlander, who's also working on Camp Morningwood, which McG is producing, and The Art of Cool.

Josh Friedlander has sold his original comedy screenplay "One Night Stan" to Lionsgate. "Harold & Kumar" creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are set to direct.
"Stan" plays out a scenario about which many men fantasize on the cusp of marriage. When Stan learns his fiancee, Julie, has had more sexual partners than he, he gets her blessing for one night to play catch-up. Unfortunately, his plans for a sex buffet don't come together quite the way he had hoped.
Peter Principato, Paul Young and Matt Berenson of Principato Young Entertainment are producing with Mike Karz of Karz Entertainment. Josie Rosen of Karz brought the script to Lionsgate and will executive produce.
Lionsgate has not strayed often into comedy territory and rarely has done well with it -- unless it has Tyler Perry's name in the title. Post-"Hangover," though, concept is king, especially if it offers a big canvas for raunchy,...
