The rivalry between Disney and Warner Bros. represents one of the most long-lasting and dynamic business competitions in the entertainment industry. Their rivalry has been deeply rooted as it has existed since the 1920s, and it originated from both studios having humble beginnings to becoming powerhouses in terms of filmmaking and creating content to entertain its audience.

While both studios are great in their own spheres it looks like Disney has the upper hand as it looks like they have overtaken their rivals in the race to sign an exciting deal with the NBA, and Warner Bros. can not do anything about it as their financial conditions are restricting them from making any lucrative offer to the National Basketball Association as they are already struggling to clear their $40 billion debt.

Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal may have raised concerns with fans as he missed his recent television show appearance.
The four-time NBA champion regularly appears as one of TNT’s hosts on Inside the NBA, alongside Ernie Johnson, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Charles Barkley.

Even as it faces a full-court press from investors curious to know if it will retain rights to show games from the NBA, Warner Bros. Discovery has been courting sports from a different field.
Warner Bros. Discovery has struck a deal with rival ESPN, according to two people familiar with the matter, that will have the former sub-licensing a small number of college football playoff games over a five-year period starting later this year. TNT will be the lead media network for broadcast of two first-round games this year and next, and then will add two quarterfinals starting in 2026.
The deal surfaces as Warner Bros. Discovery remains enmeshed in critical discussions with the NBA about renewing long-standing media rights. Warner and the NBA have been allied since 1989, with the relationship growing so strong that Warner has helped operate the NBA’s cable network and manage some of its digital properties.

Charles Barkley, one of the mainstays of the long-venerated studio show Inside the NBA — which won yet another Sports Emmy last night — says the current media rights situation “sucks right now” for Warner Bros. Discovery staffers.
About 200 jobs could be lost, Barkley said in an interview Wednesday on SiriusXM, if Wbd loses out to NBCUniversal. (Listen to a clip below.)
“It just sucks right now for the people I work with,” Barkley said. “I’m worried about all the people I work with. I just turned 61. I’ve got enough money.”

A new report indicates sources in the sports and media world are increasingly convinced the NBA is about to depart TNT.
So will there be a new version of “Roundball Rock,” or will NBC just dust off the John Tesh original starting in 2025? That decision could be on the minds of Comcast executives these days, as they attempt to win a package of NBA rights in the basketball league’s next national broadcasting deal. The company has lodged a $2.5 billion per year bid for a bundle that would include regular season and playoff games, but it has to worry about a challenge from Warner Bros. Discovery, which has been broadcasting NBA games for nearly 35 years. A new report from the Sports Business Journal reveals that NBC is currently in the lead NBA’s third parcel of games, and details how messy the fight between the two contenders just might get.

The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.

New details on NBC’s desire to pull the NBA away from TNT have emerged, and if it succeeds it could be a disaster for Wbd.
NBC may be about to pick Warner Bros. Discovery’s pocket. It is not a secret that the network has long wanted to get back into the basketball business. After losing the NBA’s broadcasting rights to ESPN in 2002, NBC has been eager to become a part of the league’s next broadcast deal, and now that NBCUniversal is putting its money where its mouth is. The Wall Street Journal reports that, even though two-thirds of the NBA’s broadcast package has already reportedly been secured by Disney and Amazon, NBC is still in talks with the league to acquire what had been Warner Bros. Discovery’s package of games. The move would require a massive cash expenditure from NBCU, but it appears executives...

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Saturday Night Live took a break from politics in its cold open to riff on March Madness — more specifically how the women’s tournament has been a lot more exciting than the men’s competition.
The setup was TBS’ post-game coverage, with co-host Kenny Smith (Devon Walker) noting that 14 million people watched the the Iowa-Connecticut game, where Caitlin Clark faced Paige Bueckers.
Fellow host Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) chimed in, “The women’s is turning up the stars. Caitlin Clark is going as for State Farm, Subway, XFinity and Nike. I’m only doing ads for three of those companies.”
Later, the anchors go to Lsu coach Kim Mulkey (Heidi Gardner), who says she’s been made up to look “like the Riddler with the Talbots.”

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to bring one of its “zombie” cable networks back to life with a big jolt of sports.
The media company intends to create a new nightly sports block for TruTV, the reality-series cable network that has largely been left to show endless episodes of the popular prank show “Impractical Jokers” and the caught-on-camera serial “World’s Dumbest.” In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little. A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts.
The sports schedule will not consist only of simulcasts of NHL, MLB and NBA matchups that typically turn up on the company’s flagship TBS and TNT cable networks. Warner intends to air new “alterna-casts” that target different audiences; a...

“I don’t play basketball for the money, the fame; I only play because I wanted to change my family’s life,” Giannis Antetokounmpo says in the trailer for his upcoming documentary, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, released by Prime Video on Wednesday.
The feature-length doc, set for release on Feb. 19, details Giannis’s family’s story beginning with his parents, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, who immigrated to Greece from Nigeria in search of a better life for their family in 1991. Giannis, born in Athens, on Dec. 6, 1994, would make a similar choice when he officially made himself eligible for the 2013 NBA draft. On July 30, 2013, he signed his rookie contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he’s played for throughout his entire professional career, leading the team to their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021.

David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, gave Greta Gerwig her flowers on Wednesday at Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology. Considering the box office for “Barbie,” a few dozen (pink) roses was probably the very least he could do.
“Greta Gerwig gets the most credit. She’s an extraordinary genius,” Zaslav said when asked by a Goldman Sachs analyst what lessons Warner Bros. took from what is now the no. 1 film of the year.
Zaslav added that Gerwig “worked very effectively” and “right down to the wire” with the Warner Bros. Pictures marketing team.
“Every division of this company got behind ‘Barbie,'” he said. “Every asset that we have was turned pink.”
Zaslav means that both literally and figuratively. He had Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Ernie Johnson talking “Barbie” on “Inside the NBA.” If you watched a futbol match in Sweden, the field turned pink during halftime.

The new bundles are coming, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Speaking at a Goldman Sachs conference Wednesday, the executive said that his company has had discussions with other companies in the content space about developing new bundles to create a better “consumer experience.” Those conversations have picked up “in the last few months,” Zaslav said.
“You know, as we talk to consumers, they find it difficult, and so I think one of the things that we’re going to see as we look into the future is bundling,” Zaslav added. “Some of this disruption and some of these moments of what’s going to happen may activate a quicker transition to things like some of us in the content business bundling together as a way to create more value and create a better consumer experience.”

Charles Barkley has the uncanny talent of making double entendres without realizing it, and he did it again this week when he was challenged to do his best Boston accent on “NBA on TNT.”
Barkley was at the Td Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, following Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. Along with fellow analysts Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith, Barkley tried his best attempt at a Boston accent by reading the phrase, “Saw Ernie at Fenway Park eating chowder on top of the Monster.”
After his expectedly terrible attempt, Barkley noted to host Ernie Johnson that he had never been to a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway and always wanted to sit on top of the Green Monster, the famous left field wall.

Warner Bros. Discovery kicked off its 2023 upfront presentation in a no-frills way, with an overall brand sizzle and ad chief Jon Steinlauf giving a few remarks on stage at the Theater at Madison Square Garden Wednesday.
While the presentation covering HBO, Max, CNN, Food Network, HGTV, Discovery and more Warner Bros. Discovery brands was shorter than last year’s show (which was the company’s first since the merger that created it last April) the tight 90-minute presentation still covered each of its key divisions. Albeit, with much less sizzle, with no stars in attendance amid the writers strike.
“Let me just start by saying I am hopeful that a fair resolution is found soon with the writers,” HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys said, adding that he hopes for a return of talent to the stage, “making this a far more entertaining show” compared to “me and my clips.

With the writers strike sowing doubt about long-term scripted entertainment, and the overall advertising market still in a downturn, Warner Bros. Discovery and other major media companies are now leaning into a form of entertainment that has proven to be resilient: Live sports.
And it is a particularly strong moment for sports at Wbd, which is fresh off the March Madness basketball tournament, at the beginning of the MLB season, and smack in the middle of the NBA and NHL playoffs.
“Our strategy in many ways is very different from other players, right? We’re not into tonnage, we’re really about picking and having the most premium sports out there,” says Luis Silberwasser, the chairman and CEO of Wbd Sports. “Whether it’s on TNT or TBS, or TruTV, it just it creates a cultural moment, right? So when these games are happening on primetime, people come to us.

Lenny Daniels on Monday became the latest WarnerMedia veteran to exit the company since it was acquired by the former Discovery Communications.
Daniels had been president of the sports-media operation once known as Turner Sports, which encompasses the company’s NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball telecasts and studio shows as well as the NCAA March Madness tournament that its parent corporation, Warner Bros. Discovery, shares with Paramount Global’s CBS Sports. He “has decided to leave Wbd Sports, effective immediately, Luis Silberwasser, chairman of Warner Bros. Discovery’s sports operations, told staffers in a memo Monday. “While this change will take place right away, Lenny has agreed to work with me to ensure a smooth transition.”
Daniels, who had been with the company for 27 years, was not named to head up the parent’s sports business, which now stretches to include sports rights for the Olympics in Europe, among other holdings.

“Shaq” knows what Shaq knows: In sports, the only real truth is what you see in front of you. On a field, on a court, in a record book, what you know for sure is the result. Anything else is fodder for a narrative.
In the life of Shaquille O’Neal, there have been plenty of opportunities for mythmaking along the way. From a childhood in a military household to breakout high school and college star to a roller-coaster, Hall-of-Fame NBA career, O’Neal has a wealth of stories for every chapter. Not all of them make it into “Shaq,” the four-part doc series premiering this week on HBO, but you could hardly ask for a better tour guide through a life that’s spanned the worlds of TV, movies, music, advertising, and, yes, basketball.

Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal had a lot to say after Kyrie Irving was recently criticized as having supported a documentary film that features antisemitic tropes.
During TNT’s Inside the NBA on Tuesday, the analysts shared their thoughts about Brooklyn Nets star Irving tweeting a link to the 2018 film Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America on Thursday in a post that has since been deleted. The following day, Nets owner Joe Tsai tweeted his disappointment that the player “appears to support a film based on a book full of anti-semitic disinformation.”
Barkley told viewers that the NBA and commissioner Adam Silver “dropped the ball” on its handling of Irving’s situation. “First of all, Adam’s Jewish,” Barkley said. He then referenced the nearly 37 million that Irving will reportedly earn for this season: “You can’t take my 40 million and insult my religion.

On the day when Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash was fired after his team started the season 2-5, the talking heads on TNT’s Emmy-winning Inside the NBA found themselves talking about Nets player Kyrie Irving and the irony that, while Nash was fired for a record that may or may not have been entirely his fault, Irving has faced no official sanction last week after sharing an Amazon link to a movie that contains antisemitic tropes.
It’s not the first time Irving has shared information about a controversial video. Last month, the same day Alex Jones went on trial for his false claims about the Sandy Hook school massacre, the Nets superstar point guard shared a 2002 video of Alex Jones decrying a “New World Order,” to his Instagram story. Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — viewed by many as the greatest player to have ever graced an NBA roster — later called Irving out.

The same old team is ready to take to the screen for TNT’s “Inside The NBA.” But their setting may look a little different.
When Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal and Ernie Johnson take to the set of the Warner Bros. Discovery network’s signature sports program, they will do so in a more open space that includes bigger screens, large vertical monitors and a broader overall design that reflects some of the demands of modern production. It’s the first time in nearly four or five years that the company’s sports division has refreshed the show’s look.
“The set has become the fifth character of this show,” says Craig Barry, executive vice president and chief content officer at Warner Bros. Discovery’s sports unit and needs to accommodate some of the hosts’ desire to get up and be more physical than the typical set of sports studio hosts.

Ahead of tomorrow’s tipoff of the 2022-23 NBA season, Warner Bros Discovery announced contract renewals for the four hosts of TNT’s mainstay studio show Inside the NBA.
Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal and Ernie Johnson will continue to host the program “for many years to come,” according to the official announcement. Barkley had been wooed by the Liv golf tour, a nascent venture backed by Saudi Arabia that has lavished extraordinary amounts of cash on players and broadcasters.
Terms were not disclosed. The New York Post reported that Barkley’s deal is for 10-years and “well over” 100 million. Kathleen Finch, Warner Bros. Former NBA player Charles Barkley has agreed to a 10-year deal with TNT, expected to pay more than nine figures, according to a report from the New York Post.
Barkley’s current contract with the NBA broadcaster — which pays him 10 million per season — still has three years left, ending after the 2024-25 season and overlapping with TNT’s broadcast agreement with the league.
If Barkley fulfills his entire current contract, he would be looking at making over 100 million, approaching 200 million, but the exact amount is not yet known. In the case that Turner Broadcasting doesn’t keep the NBA, Barkley could also own rights to employment for other digital platforms or networks, especially if Amazon, Apple or other tech giants are involved.

Warner Bros. Discovery just sent a bright signal about its intentions regarding the NBA.
The media company has re-signed Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith to new multi-year deals to host TNT’s flagship studio show, “Inside The NBA,” just as anticipation is building for negotiations around the NBA’s next rights deals, which are slated to expire with Warner Bros. and Walt Disney’s ESPN after the 2024-2025 season. Shaquille O’Neal, the fourth member of the show’s studio team, struck a broader pact with the parent company in 2020.
“Inside the NBA” has, in the current era, become perhaps the biggest program on TNT, where new emphasis is being placed on showcasing games from the NBA and NHL.
““Our partnership with the NBA is very important to us and this long-term agreement with the ‘Inside the NBA’ team is recognition of their significance to that relationship,” said Luis Silberwasser.

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley is considering retiring from his broadcast duties when his TNT contract expires in two years. Speaking to reporters ahead of this coming Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game, the Inside the NBA co-host said, “I don’t want to die on TV. I want to die on the golf course or somewhere fishing. I don’t want to be sitting inside over [by] fat-ass Shaq [waiting] to drop dead.” Barkley has served as a sports analyst for TNT since 2000, appearing on the network’s NBA coverage during pre-game and halftime shows. He currently features alongside Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal on the postgame talk show Inside the NBA. As first reported by the Dallas Morning News, the 59-year-old Barkley told reporters that there are two years left on his current contract, and once that expires, “that’s probably going to be it for me.” “It’s been a great,...

Bob Costas is joining the starting lineup at WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports — at least for now.
The veteran sportscaster will serve as on-site studio host for pre-game and post-game coverage of the National League Championship Series on Warner’s TBS cable network, marking the first time Costas has worked game coverage for the media conglomerate. He already hosts a sports-journalism program, “Back On The Record,” on Warner’s HBO, and contributes to its CNN news network.
“It’s my job to kind of move everything along, be the traffic cop asking a few good questions,” Costas says in an interview. He has been calling and analyzing the sport since the 1980s, first for NBC and more recently for the MLB Network. Talks between Costas and Turner Sports were previously reported in August by the New York Post.
“Bob’s passion for baseball is undeniable,” says Craig Barry, Turner Sports’ chief content officer,...

There’s not much that can be said in the way of complements for Space Jam: A New Legacy, in fact I can’t think of a single thing the film has going in its favour.
25 years since its first instalment the Looney Tunes are back playing basketball. This time around artificial intelligence (played by Don Cheadle) kidnaps Dom James (Cedric Joe), the son of famed basketball player LeBron James, who then has to work with Bugs Bunny to win a basketball game.

TNT cohost Charles Barkley, who once infamously claimed not to be a role model, advocated on Thursday for players to “beat the hell” out of fans.
Speaking on the Inside the NBA show on TNT, Barkley was responding to recent reports of bad fan behavior. The incidents included a fan dumping popcorn on Washington Wizards player Russell Westbrook and another spitting at Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.
Barkley said that the National Basketball Assn. needs a rule change that would allow players to retaliate against one fan per game.
“Y’all guys always get mad when I say what NBA rule I would change,” Barkley said. “I think you should be able to go up in the stands and beat the hell out of one person per game.”
“I can’t see why that didn’t take hold,” Barkley’s co-host Ernie Johnson replied.
“You don’t think that guy...

WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports and Major League Baseball have reached a seven-year rights extension through 2028, with HBO Max potentially a future venue for game broadcasts.
While the partners are not commenting on the valuation of the deal, it has been reported to be $3.75 billion, or $535 million a year.
The re-up will keep games on TBS, a longtime MLB broadcaster with particular prominence in the postseason. Under the new agreement, TBS will add a season-long Tuesday night game franchise and digital rights will be added to Bleacher Report plus what the official announcement called “additional WarnerMedia platforms.”
One of those platforms is HBO Max, which launched in May and has gotten off to a sluggish start. An ad-supported tier of the subscription service is due to launch in 2021 and executives have said it will include live sports and news. No details have emerged about those offerings as of yet and a...
