The How to Train Your Dragon films have been one of the most beloved animated film franchises. The adventures of Hiccup and the emotional payoff with the final 2019 film was such a great end to the franchise. Universal is transforming the franchise into live-action with franchise director Dean DeBlois returning to helm the upcoming film.

However, it seems the makers of the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon live-action film are trying their best to retain the identity of the core franchise.

“The Outrun,” the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s deeply raw and lyrical 2016 memoir about addiction, recovery and nature, premiered in Sundance this year to stellar reviews, with many awards prophets already suggesting that the film could take Saoirse Ronan — who stars in and produces the film — back to the Oscars in 2025.
For producer Sarah Brocklehurst, the Sundance premiere also marked something of an enjoyable full circle, landing almost five years to the day after the Sundance 2019 debut of “Animals.” The film, which screens at the Berlin Film Festival, also marks the first feature from her Brock Media banner.
“Animals,” based on Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel about hedonism and friendship (described as a “Withnail for Girls”) and starring Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat, may not have been Brocklehurst’s debut film (that was 2012’s “Black Pond”), but she claims it was a career game-changer. “It proved to myself and probably...

In a stark debut from Leo Leigh, Maggie O’Neill meets a mysterious biker and discovers his son is a narcissistic YouTuber and wannabe dancer
This bleak, stark debut feature from writer-director Leo Leigh bears the obvious influences of his parents Mike Leigh and Alison Steadman; it has a barbed cartoony unhappiness, a depiction of its characters verging on caricature and misanthropy but not quite, and the notes of redemption offered at the end are ambiguous. It is not a theatre of cruelty so much as a theatre of mockery; a world where a lot of the time absurd people are laughing at the absurdity of others, partly – but not wholly – because of how unhappy they are.
Leigh allows us to see how the tonal sourness challenges the adjective in the title. Maggie O’Neill plays Sue, a woman who runs a (depressing) children’s party shop hiring out balloons and banners,...

A British version of “Call My Agent!”?!? Mon Dieu! The critically acclaimed French comedy series, set at a Parisian talent agency, now has had a British remake set at an agency in the heart of London’s Soho. Called “Ten Percent” (an English translation of “Call My Agent!’s” original name “Dix Pour Cent”), the original became a hit for the way it explored the often-fractious relationship between agent and talent, a relationship that can have a skyrocketing ego on one side and expectation management and endless anxiety on the other. It also received acclaim for featuring cameos by celebrities from Isabelle Huppert to Sigourney Weaver, who appeared to relish the opportunity to gently mock themselves. It is a tradition that continues in the British version, with cameos by David and Jessica Oyelowo, Emma Corrin, David Harewood and Helena Bonham Carter.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow contends that his new film “The Bubble” is not based on the challenging production of “Jurassic World: Dominion” – even though his movie is about a group of actors coming together to make a sequel to a blockbuster franchise about dinosaur-like beasts in London. “It really isn’t based on it at all, other than it seemed fun to do comedic dinosaurs,” Apatow told TheWrap in a recent interview.
And yet, when he showed “Jurassic World: Dominion” star Laura Dern his comedy he was relieved that she found it funny. “That was very important to me that everybody got a kick out of it, because it really is an exaggeration of how bad could this get? Luckily this didn’t actually happen like this to anybody.”

If and when the Covid-19 pandemic fully ceases, one of the relics from this bizarre time (beyond the face masks) will be the Covid movie. To keep the content flowing during the height of the pandemic, studios pushed smaller pictures that had a limited cast and limited locations into production. Movies like Locked Down, Malcom and Marie, The Guilty, and Kimi, whether explicitly about our current situation or not, made what they could of a bad situation and told smaller scale stories to various degrees of success. It’s become something of its own genre.
Judd Apatow’s latest comedy for Netflix, The Bubble, is not only another example of this trend, but it also uses the realities of making a movie during quarantine as a means of showbiz satire. The premise is that a small group of actors, played by Karen Gillan, Pedro Pascal, David Duchovny, Leslie Mann, and Keegan-Michael Key,...

One day, a great film may be made about the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic and the attempts to navigate life amid uncertainty, fear, and stringent precautions. But, this is not that day, and The Bubble is not that film.
The latest offering from Judd Apatow, the Netflix comedy aims to be a satirical look at Hollywood entitlement and the hubristic attempts to deliver a distraction in the midst of a pandemic. But it’s a rare whiff from the director of The 40-Year-Old-Virgin (2005), a weightless, toothless, and formless comedy that struggles to find laughs and meaning over the course of its 126 minutes.
The Bubble concerns the production of a big-budget action spectacular during the pandemic’s earliest days. After quarantining for 14 days, the cast and crew live inside the same British hotel over the course of six months, trying to finish their dinosaur movie while indulging in drugs,...

The Covid-19 pandemic was hard on everyone, not least Judd Apatow. Among the many casualties was his last movie, “The King of Staten Island,” which was supposed to open the SXSW film festival but had to cancel after America went into lockdown. When faced with such challenges, creative people create. Some made bread. Others grew out their beards. Judd Apatow made a movie. A very bad movie. In not-even-the-worst-thing-to-launch-on-Netflix-lately “The Bubble,” a team of insufferable Hollywood actors quarantine together on the set of a massively disorganized franchise movie and proceed to drive each other crazy. But hey, what did you do during Covid?
During her Oscar opening monologue, co-host Amy Schumer (star of Apatow’s far-better 2015 “Trainwreck”) took a moment to congratulate the audience. “During a raging pandemic, you made a movie. Give yourselves a hand,” she said. “And yet they weren’t all great. … You know who you are.

The only question: Which movie?
Judd Apatow co-writes, directs, and produces upcoming Netflix comedy “The Bubble,” about the makings of a fictional movie in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. While “The Bubble” will be available to stream April 1, the faux film at the center of its plot, “Cliff Beasts 6: Battle for Everest: Memories of a Requiem,” alas will never hit theaters…especially if its director, played by Fred Armisen, can’t deliver a satisfying cut to the studio executive (Kate McKinnon).
“The Bubble” centers on the behind-the-scenes drama of making the sixth installment in the “Cliff Beasts” universe, the “23rd largest dino franchise ever.”
