Danger is never very far away in Noora Niasari’s confident debut, a deeply personal tribute to a generation torn between tradition and modernity. Focusing on the title character, Shayda hangs on a vulnerable but powerful performance from Holy Spider’s Zar Amir Ebrahimi as an Iranian divorcée hiding out from her abusive ex, who may or may not be planning to smuggle their daughter Mona (Selina Zahednia) back to Iran.
This fear is played out in the jittery opening sequence, set in 1995, when Shayda and Joyce (Leah Purcell), a social worker of sorts, scope out an airport with Mona in tow. Both women impress upon Mona what to do if she should ever end up there against her will, noting repeatedly that blue uniforms equate with safety. Back at the women’s shelter, a shared hostel in a fiercely secret suburban location, Shayda wonders how she got to this...

"I am not afraid." Sony Pictures Classics has debuted a new US trailer for the outstanding film Shayda, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Noora Niasari. It first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, winning the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic section. I saw it at Sundance and it's fantastic - one of the best feature debuts of this year. A young Iranian mother named Shayda and her six-year-old daughter find refuge in an Australian women's shelter during the two weeks of the Iranian New Year. When the girl's father shows up, it takes all of her courage to fight back and stop him from taking over. The extremely talented Zahra Amir Ebrahimi (also from last year's Holy Spider) stars, with Osamah Sami, Leah Purcell, Jillian Nguyen, Mojean Aria, Selina Zahednia, Rina Mousavi. Australia has submitted Shayda as their entry for the Academy Awards...

"We shouldn't have to change... No one should." Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for a new animated movie called Scarygirl, based on an original idea by creator Nathan Jurevicius. This recently premiered at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival in Australia, hence why this new trailer is out now to follow up that debut. Arkie is an adopted 12-year-old girl, blind in one eye and with a tentacle-like arm, who lives on an isolated peninsula with her over-protective father Blister, a giant octopus. When her world is threatened by a loss of sunlight, a young girl must overcome her fears and journey to a fantastical city, save her father from a mysterious scientist and prevent the destruction of her planet. Starring Jillian Nguyen as the voice of Arkie, plus Sam Neill, Tim Minchin, Anna Torv, Liv Hewson, Mark Coles Smith, Deborah Mailman, and Dylan Alcott. Wow this looks way better than expected.

The CW has always had a thing or two for an international acquisition, and it seems that this strategy is continuing under new ownership.
The network has acquired British supernatural drama series The Rising and Australian surfer drama Barons for its summer lineup. Both series will debut on Monday, May 29, with The Rising airing at 8 p.m. and Barons at 9.
It comes after Nexstar acquired the network and brought in Brad Schwartz to oversee programming. Deadline has revealed that the network will lean further into unscripted programming, with the hire of Heather Olander and the recent pickup of FBoy Island, and it seems global drama is also on the cards as it trims its original scripted budget.
The Rising comes from Sky in the UK, as Deadline revealed back in 2019, and is a remake of Belgian supernatural crime thriller Hotel Beau Séjour.

Sony Pictures Classics has secured distribution rights to “Shayda,” which won the Audience Award at Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition last month.
The distributor holds all media rights in North America, Latin America, Benelux, Eastern Europe, Portugal, the Middle East, and Turkey.
Executive produced by Cate Blanchett’s Dirty Films, the first feature by writer-director Noora Niasari follows Shayda and her six-year-old daughter Mona, two Iranians living in Australia. After divorcing her husband Hossein, Shayda moves them into a women’s shelter, where she struggles to adjust to her new life while trying to create one for Mona. Encouraged by the start of the Persian New Year, Nowruz, to embrace her newfound freedom, Shayda is thrown off when Hossein wins visitation rights, raising the possibility that he’ll attempt to take his daughter back to Iran.

It’s a Sunday evening in London in early February and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is freshly changed from an award show when she logs onto a Zoom with Noora Niasari, the writer and director behind “Shayda,” the powerful Sundance award-winning film executive produced by Dirty Films, the production company co-founded by Blanchett.
“I’m so happy. It’s fantastic. It’s great for Todd [Field], it’s so great for the film,” Blanchett says as she fields congratulations on accepting the London Critics Circle’s best actress prize. “And I just read that Viola Davis became an Egot!”
The topic of awards is the conversation du jour this time of year because awards are capital in the entertainment business — and Blanchett knows a thing or two about this topic, with eight Oscar nominations to her name. Ultimately, the accolades help a film reach audiences far and wide. In the case of “Shayda,...

Within the unassuming exterior of a suburban house, the central setting in Shayda, a handful of women are working to reclaim their lives. The title character is one of them, determined to leave an abusive marriage with her young daughter and not return to their native Iran. Unfolding in 1995 Australia, Noora Niasari’s debut feature is drawn from her experiences as a child in such a shelter and is at its core a tribute to the writer-director’s mother. Fueling the drama is the quiet ferocity of Zar Amir Ebrahimi’s performance and her tender chemistry with Selina Zahednia as 6-year-old Mona.
Early scenes are thick with shadows, a sense of danger lurking. Four years earlier, Shayda moved to Australia with Hossein (Osamah Sami) and their toddler daughter so that he could attend medical school. A student too, she has stopped wearing the hijab and embraced the relative freedoms of a Western woman,...

Millie Lies Low is a dryly funny deadpan character study of the titular deeply troubled sociopath, and her faux journey to a New York architecture firm Internship placement. Having recently beaten her best friend (Jillian Nguyen) and fellow classmate for the position, for reasons not yet known Millie is overcome by a panic attack and desperately claws her way off the plane bound for the States from Wellington Airport. Millie mills about, alot throughout this film it turns out, it is on the tin, 'lies low'. This translates into the brilliant non-verbal comedy, often minutes without dialogue, that give way to Millie's manic energy garnered mostly from her facial expressions. When she realizes what she has done, and that a...

Ivan Sen came in 2016 when I watched his outback police detective drama Goldstone. Sen's work, be it TV or film, has a striking quality of featuring small stories nestled among larger backdrops and storylines.
Sen's latest project Expired is quite a bit different than anything he's done before. Gone is the Australian Outback, and in its place is the crowded, neon-laden Hong Kong of the near future. It's both a familiar and foreign place where robots look and feel human, life expectancy has increased significantly, and where technology is both advanced and lo-fi. It's in this world that we meet Jack (Ryan Kwanten), a man searching for answers; April (Jillian Nguyen), an entertainer finds hope and love with Jack; and Dr. Bergman (Hugo Weaving), a scientist who is desperate...

"There isn't much time... and you're deteriorating very quickly. Lionsgate has revealed an official US trailer for Expired, an intriguing sci-fi thriller from Australia set in the future in a "neon-drenched" world similar to Blade Runner. In a futuristic Hong Kong, young assassin Jack crosses paths with a nightclub singer. As Jack becomes increasingly drawn to April, his body mysteriously deteriorates. Jack tracks down reclusive life extension scientist Dr. Bergman, who unearths Jack’s long buried secret and is forced to confront his own murky past. "Every frame encourages life and emotion, an optimism as much as heartache, of what could be, and what will be." Ryan Kwanten and Hugo Weaving star with Jillian Nguyen as April. This looks very cool, I can't deny with this footage, I just hope the rest holds up. This trailer also has a rad score. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Ivan Sen's Expired,...

Audiences at this month’s Flickerfest will be treated to a taste of an upcoming feature from director Jasmin Tarasin and writer John Collee.
Proof-of-concept short film The Story of Lee Ping provides a snapshot of the world that will be featured in Tarasin’s upcoming feature debut, which is based on novel ‘The Burial’ by Courtney Collins.
Set in the rural backlots of 1920s Australia, the 14-minute drama follows a young Chinese woman (Jillian Nguyen) who is imprisoned as an erotic dancer.
As she plots her freedom, Lee meets Jack (Mark Coles Smith), an Aboriginal farmhand who changes her perspective.
The film was produced by Lucy Maclaren and Jo McNulty-Clark, with Stephen Vineberg, Deanne Weir and Oliver Lawrance serving as executive producers.
Tarasin said she was inspired to tell the back stories of two minor characters from what will become the feature as they explored similar themes to the main story.

Ryan Kwanten has joined the regular cast of Them: Covenant, the first season of an Amazon Studios horror anthology set in the Us in 1953.
Deborah Ayorinde and Ashley Thomas play the leads, African American couple Henry and Lucky Emory, who decide to move their family from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood.

Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang is now officially a Stan original Australian production and will be released in cinemas and on the streamer this summer.
The launch date and the release window are yet to be revealed by Stan or the distributor Transmission Films – but it’s fair to assume Stan won’t have to abide by the usual 90-day hold back after the theatrical debut.
In a statement issued by Stan, Kurzel said: “I am thrilled in the boldness and daring by Stan to embrace our ambitious film. For Australians to see our take on Peter Carey’s extraordinary book in cinemas and on Stan over the summer is very exciting. I hope as many eyes as possible get the opportunity to see a film the makers are deeply proud of.”

Hugo Weaving and Jillian Nguyen in ‘Loveland’.
Jillian Nguyen landed her first screen role – as Molly Kane in Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang – just two weeks after graduating from 16th Street Actors Studio in Melbourne last year.
Since then her career has rocketed as she played the lead in Ivan Sen’s romantic sci-fi drama Loveland followed by a key supporting role in Hungry Ghosts, Matchbox Pictures’ genre-bending 4-parter for Sbs directed by Shawn Seet.
There was one speed bump after Kurzel’s film wrapped: She was so depressed she got fired from her retail job. It’s unlikely she will have to go back to such work, as Seet says: “I was blown away by Jillian. She is a real, natural talent.”
Stephen Corvini, who produced Hungry Ghosts with Timothy Hobart, tells If: “She is a superstar in the making. On the screen her energy crackles and pops.
