To begin, we must acknowledge a painful fact: omnibus features are only as strong as their weakest link, and it’s clear that production company Xyz Films learned from its past. Xx, thankfully better than the company’s recent Holidays, features four female-directed psychological horror shorts that in large part take on motherhood, domestic life, and parenting. Perhaps it should have stopped there, with two strong stand-outs (Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, with The Birthday Party, and Karyn Kusama’s Her Only Living Son), the decent The Box (by Jovanka Vuckovic), and the weak link, Roxanne Benjamin’s Don’t Fall. It was as if the best three followed a carefully prescribed assignment; Don’t Fall attempts to jam a feature’s worth of suspense into a short that needed a lot more build-up. Also at odds with the tone is Sofia Carrillo’s beautiful, gothic interstitials of cracked porcelain...

★★★☆☆ Is there a current Hollywood star more effortlessly convincing as an scientist-cum-astronaut than Matt Damon? If Ridley Scott's latest foray into the realms of science fiction, The Martian, is to be considered as evidence, then the answer is 'not likely'. Based on the novel by Andy Wier, here Damon excels as botanist Mark Watney, who is forced to rely on his expert know-how and good old American can-do attitude to survive after been left for dead on the surface of the Red Planet. Fortunately, as the quote in the trailer suggests, he's perfectly able to "science the shit" out of his predicament and keep audiences thoroughly entertained while doing it.

“The Martian” has been called “‘Cast Away’ on Mars” in various corners of the Internet, but it’s actually quite a different movie than the 2000 Tom Hanks film. Yes, Matt Damon’s astronaut is stranded in a place where he has little hope of surviving, but he approaches the extremely treacherous situation very differently from Hanks’ character. Damon’s character remains rather humorous, upbeat and optimistic in his time persevering to survive on the Red Planet. That optimism is largely what spoke to “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard when he read the novel by Andy Weir that’s the basis for the film, which opened in theaters yesterday. Goddard (whose past credits include “The Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost” and “Buffy”) spoke to HitFix about the challenges of adapting a book with a lot of technical language, why he considers “The Martian” a “religious movie,” and which book moment that...

Ridley Scott still remembers, vividly, sitting down in a movie theater, watching the lights go down and experiencing as a gamechanging moment as 2001: A Space Odyssey sputtered to life onscreen. "It had been out less than a week," the filmmaker recalls, settling into a chair in a cavernous hotel conference room in Toronto. "I sat in theater all by myself in the middle of the day, in Queensgate, London, with a pack of cigarettes — you could smoke in theaters in those days. It was a brand-new 70mm print, and...

Lionel Blair has admitted Celebrity Big Brother was "much worse" than its portrayal in Ricky Gervais's Extras.
The 82-year-old entertainer became a fan of the show after appearing in the 2007 Extras Christmas Special, where Andy has a meltdown in the Big Brother house.
However, Lionel said that while Gervais's portrayal of the house was "funny", the reality was "much worse".
He said: "It was much worse than [Extras]! Oh no. That was funny. Ricky was lovely in there and he did this speech about Big Brother and everything. But Big Brother wasn't really like that."
Lionel said that although some viewers may have though he was a "bit boring" as he follows orders, he does have a short temper that came to the fore in his confrontation with Luisa Zissman and Jasmine Waltz.
He said: "When I go, I go. And when I lose my temper because of somebody and it affects the entire house,...

Amanda won her first-ever competition on "Big Brother," and if fans thought she could be obnoxious when she lost, she proved herself an even worse winner. Howard is physically the biggest target on "Big Brother," and he knows it. So he was very concerned that his time had come when he was put on the block by Aaryn this week. In the latest episode, he decided to call a house meeting so he could lay out some "realness" to the houseguests in the hopes of convincing them to keep him.
What he accomplished instead was laying out some real confusing rhetoric that did very little to help his case, and may have sealed his fate. “People say I’m hard to understand, but I have no idea what Howard’s talking about," Judd said in a confessional later.
As an example, no one could be expected to follow this train of thought: “When it’s, ya know, pick that or whatever, whatnot, or said, not real, and I haven’t even said or acted in a way.

Earlier today, we captured this new pic of Elissa,Helen,Andy, and Candice, chatting it up about how things may go tonight, via the live feeds. Currently, Helen, Elissa, and Nick are on the block. Elissa is the target of current Hoh,Aaryn Gries. However, we really don't know how this thing is going to play out as everyone just keeps flip-flopping like nobody's business. That's definitely going to make tonight's live eviction show, that more interesting. I can tell you that it's definitely a possibility that we could see Elissa sticking around again as there is talk of keeping her. However, Nick is in the "moving company" alliance, and that's supposed to still be intact,so I don't know. We'll see how it goes, tonight. It all goes down tonight,July 11th at 8pm central time on CBS.

The latest season of "Big Brother" certainly has been the most talked about in years thanks to the homophobic and racial slurs some of the contestants have been spewing at and about one another.
Andy Herren is the sole openly gay housemate competing on season 15 of the CBS reality series and has been victim to some of the anti-gay comments made by his fellow contestants.
Herren isn't allowed to contact the outside world while appearing on the show, so two of his friends, Chaundre White and Scott Goehring, have decided to counteract the negativity that has surrounded this latest season of "Big Brother" by setting up a fundraiser in his name.
As stated on the project's Plan G page, The #FandyNation For Kindness & Love campaign is raising funds for a notable cause:

Many viewers were up in arms over Aaryn Gries’ offensive remarks during the 24-live feed of CBS’ “Big Brother,” and the network ended up airing the montage of hateful rhetoric last night (July 7).
The controversial housemate told Helen Kim to “go make rice,” adding, “I probably look like a squinty Asian right now… Why you have no boyfriend? It’s because you don’t want long nail!”
Gries also slammed homosexual costar Andy Herren as she declared, “No one’s going to vote for whoever that queer puts up.”
Cast member Howard Overby explained, "Even when these comments are made in fun, they're still hurtful and are disrespectful."
Additionally, Aaryn’s modeling agency has decided to drop her from their roster. "Aaryn, season 15 cast member of Big Brother, revealed prejudices and other beliefs that we do not condone. We certainly find the statements made by Aaryn on the live Internet feed to be offensive.

Bad news for "Big Brother": Amid the recent controversy over racist and homophobic statements made by several "Big Brother" contestants, the series has hit a ratings low.
On Wednesday night, the CBS reality series brought in 5.4 million viewers scored a 1.6 demo rating, marking a 17 and 27 percent drop respectively.
Although the eve of Fourth Of July is notoriously bad ratings-wise, "Big Brother" saw its fair share of trouble this week when live feeds caught contestants Aaryn Gries and GinaMarie Zimmerman making offensive comments about their competitors. Aaryn, for example, said that Asian-American contestant Helen should "Shut up, go make some rice," while GinaMarie later added, "Andy was like, 'I'm gonna punch her in the face,' and I was like, 'Maybe that'll make her eyes straight.'"
CBS released a statement on Tuesday saying they in no way condoned the contestants' behavior.

"From what I've observed, the people that get voted out at the beginning of the show are either the people that try to play five or six weeks worth of the game in one to two weeks and boom, they're out, or they're the people the Hoh nominates them and is like, 'Well, I'm nominating you because you never took the time to get to know me' and I'm just like, 'What are you thinking, person?! They're the Hoh, get to know them!'" Andy tells Zap2it.
So, his strategy is to make connections right away, which will hopefully keep him from being seen as a threat.

He’s funny, smart, and savvy. And maybe he’d date us!
Big Brother 15 is almost upon us, and while the cutthroat, animalistic version of The Sims isn’t going to win a Peabody Award anytime soon, it’s the perfect summer fling. You can’t not pick a favorite contestant every year. Hell, there was that one year when I ended up rooting for Porsche, guys. Porsche. She was named after a car that’s smarter than she is.
Usually we’re gifted with at least one reliable gay contestant each season (<3 long-haired Wil from last season <3), a firecracker-type who is both gregarious and nefarious. This season appears to be no exception: Andy Herren, an improv comic from Chicago who serves as a public speaking professor at a community college, seems fun, intelligent, and wise. According to his Facebook, he’s also out, which is a big step past...

We all love cats. We're all guilty of spending ridiculous amounts of time indulging in cat videos, cat memes, and for some of us, even following famous cat Twitters. Grumpy Cat may be the most well-known cat of last year, but filmmakers Juliette Eisner and Andy Capper propose there is a more famous, more lovable -- and definitely more positive -- celebrity cat: Lil Bub. It may seem absurd that the cat video phenomenon has gone to the level of a full documentary feature, but "Lil Bub & Friendz" explore this craze and introduces us to some of our favorite famous kitties across the country (don't deny your excitement). What it's about: Juliette: Cats Andy: Love and death About the filmmaker: Juliette: Beauty and the beast. Andy: Juliette, you are not a beast. Don't be so hard on yourself. What else do you want audiences to know about your film?...

Lord of the Rings star plans fresh take on George Orwell's political satire with 'emotionally centred' family movie
Andy Serkis will direct a partially motion-captured take on George Orwell's Animal Farm, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Serkis, who may also take a performing role, is currently enjoying a stint as second unit director on Peter Jackson's latest fantasy trilogy, Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit. Animal Farm will be produced through a London-based performance-capture studio named The Imaginarium, which Serkis founded last year with Bridget Jones's Diary producer Jonathan Cavendish.
"I think we found a rather fresh way of looking at it," Serkis said. "It is definitely using performance capture, but we are using an amalgamation of filming styles to create the environments.

Major Crimes wraps its first season tonight.

Bryan Fuller says that Mockingbird Lane still could become a series depending on how well the Halloween special does. Fuller says that NBC's issue was whether the series could appeal to a broad audience, and if enough people tune in for the special, the network would reconsider. I'm still hoping Mockingbird Lane can pull a Nightingales, only without removing all the interesting parts of the pilot when becoming a series.
I'm fascinated with TV shows that get cancelled without airing an episode, whether that be the train wrecks that look so bad the network rethinks its decision over the summer, like the Scott Baio comedy Rewind, or shows that left to wither unaired over the season like Still Life. Now the Dane Cook comedy Next Caller can join those ranks. Considering how awful Next Caller looked, I'm relieved.

Eureka, Season 5, Episode 1, “Lost”
Written by Jaime Paglia
Directed by Matthew Hastings
Airs Mondays at 9pm Et on SyFy
Eureka is usually a pretty light-hearted and whimsical show, but this week’s season premiere is definitely on the darker, more serious side.
To recap last season, Global Dynamics spent a majority of the time preparing to launch the spaceship Astraeus to Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. The ship was ready to launch by the finale until Beverly of Eureka past sabotaged the project and gained control of the launch. This culminated in the Astraeus and its crew disappearing from Gd.
The final season’s premiere kicks off with the Astraeus crash-landing onto…Earth! The crew is picked up by Gd personnel led by Deputy Andy, now the head security officer of Gd. Andy though first appearing like his normal happy self quickly becomes more serious, delivering the line “Quarantine everything” in chilling fashion.

Action thriller Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg, has entered the North American box office at No1, taking $24million (£15.7million) on its opening weekend.
Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said it was down to Wahlberg's popularity as a performer and added that the movie - produced by British company Working Title - was cost-effective. It had a budget of $25million, which it has nearly recouped already in a debut that was above industry expectations.
Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, it also stars Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Foster, Caleb Landry Jones, Lukas Haas, Diego Luna and Jk Simmons.
Last week's box office number one, horror film The Devil Inside, plummeted to seventh place with a drop of almost 77 per cent, the 19th biggest fall on record. But it was made for less than $1million and has already earned $46.2million, so studio chiefs at Paramount won't be feeling too devastated.

While Toy Story 3 is almost a surefire winner for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards, Pixar is shooting for the moon this time. Must Be The Music judge Sharleen Spiteri, has claimed that X Factor bosses should never have used auto-tuning on their contestants voices.
As the Texas star prepares for this Sunday’s Mbtm final, in which Daithi, Emma’s Imagination. Hero, Missing Andy, Pepper and Piano and The Picture will compete for the £100,000 prize, she hit out at the rival ITV show which famously used voice altering technology on it’s first audition show.
Sharleen told The Sun:

Fellow judge Dizzee Rascal claimed that their show has more credibility, because the artists are the one who benefit from the massive exposure, not the judges. Each act who reached the live stages had a song released on iTunes, which was promoted on the show. Emma’s Imagination...

Five piece group Missing Andy performed on tonight’s Must Be The Music semi final.
The British band have previously performed alongside the Pigeon Detectives and The Wombats at South by Southwest Festival in Texas after R.E.M pulled out.
They passed their Mbtm audition by performing ‘Made In England’, which was incredibly catchy but sounded a bit like a football anthem. Before they took to the stage Jamie Cullum wondered what their new song would be like and worried that it wouldn’t compare to their first offering. He said:
‘Sometimes a band only have one big song’
We didn’t like the song as much as Made In England but thankfully the judges did. Check out their opinions below.
Judges Comments:
Jamie: I was worried how you would follow up Made In England but Im pleased to say that you guys write anthems and that’s another one you’ve written.

Ricky Gervais's comedy empire now stretches across the globe, from Hollywood films to podcasts that reach millions. But along with the adoring fans have come a legion of critics. He discusses weight loss, being a control freak, and why he always has to have the last word
Ricky Gervais doesn't actually want to rule the world, or at least not all of it. He just wants absolute total control over his small corner of it. Although it's not that small. The Office is now a global phenomenon: it's been sold to more than 80 countries and, after an American, Brazilian, French, German and Russian version, it's about to be re-incarnated in Israel, complete with "an ultra-orthodox saleswoman", "an embittered Russian accountant" and, in the main role, a Jewish David Brent, otherwise known as Avi Meshulam.
Then there's his podcasts – basically the recorded ramblings of him and his long-time collaborator Stephen Merchant...
