And then there are those moments when you surprise yourself by rising to the occasion. Jacob Elordi’s dedication to portraying Dorrigo Evans in The Narrow Road to the Deep North isn’t just about losing weight, though that in itself is no small feat. It’s about the commitment, the grit poured into every frame.
For six weeks, Elordi, along with his castmates, pushed their bodies to the limit, shedding pounds to embody the gaunt figures of prisoners of war. But what stands out is not the number on the scale but the deep emotional weight the cast carried through it all. After all, weight loss may change how you look, but dedication changes who you are. The television adaptation of The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Richard Flanagan’s epic Booker Prize-winning war novel, debuted on Amazon Prime Video on April 18. As befits the cultural importance of the book to Australians, the series stars arguably the country’s buzziest male actor Jacob Elordi and is also helmed by one of its most important filmmakers Justin Kurzel. But Narrow Road‘s decade-long journey to the screen has been a long and arduous one.
Published in 2013, Flanagan’s WWII-set book follows Dorrigo Evans, an Australian surgeon haunted by a wartime love affair and his brutal experiences as a Pow forced to build the Thai-Burma Death Railway under Imperial Japanese command. The novel shifts between Dorrigo’s youth, including a summer affair with his uncle’s young wife, the horrors of his captivity, and his later, unfulfilled life, exploring memory, trauma, and the fragility of human dignity.

One of the most underrated movies of 2024 is storming Hulu's streaming charts. According to FlixPatrol, director Justin Kurzel's "The Order" was the second most streamed film on the service in the U.S. as of April 23, 2025, wedged between "American Idol" and "The Handmaid's Tale." Despite flying under the radar, the Zach Baylin-penned crime thriller boasts an impressive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the movie for its performances and intense story.
"The Order" has Jude Law playing Terry Husk, an FBI agent tasked with bringing down a white supremacist organization that is connected to a series of car heists, bank robberies, counterfeiting scams, and bombings in the 1980s. The group, led by Bob Mathews (Nichols Hoult), is raising funds to overthrow the government and ignite a race war in the United States, and the FBI must (obviously) prevent that from happening.

Plot: Muriel and her husband Lee are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of Lee’s brother. Muriel embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.
Review: In 2005, it was considered radical that Brokeback Mountain would get a wide theatrical release, considering it was a homosexual love story. How times have changed. Two decades later, On Swift Horses is the latest in a long line of queer films that boast substantial star power and nuanced narratives about same-sex relationships. The stigma is no longer as prominent as it once was, but there is still something to be said about heterosexual actors playing gay characters. Still, it bodes well for box office performance when you have up-and-coming talents like Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones in those roles. It didn’t take much for Jacob Elordi to sign on for Shaun Grant and Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of the Booker Prize-winning novel The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
In fact, one email from Kurzel was enough to seal the deal, the Euphoria star told Deadline.
“I’ve wanted to work with him for as long as I can remember,” he said. “Since I was an early teen, after seeing his film Snowtown. So for me, just getting his name in my inbox was all it really took.”
The five-part limited series, which launched Friday in the U.S. just days after Prime Video announced it had secured the U.S. distribution rights, follows Lieutenant-Colonel Dorrigo Evans throughout multiple pivotal moments in his life, from his all-too-brief love affair with his uncle’s wife Amy (Odessa Young) to his time as a prisoner of war on the Thailand-Burma Railway.

The television adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s prize-winning book The Narrow Road to the Deep North brings with it a number of firsts. It is acclaimed Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel’s first work for television and also the first time Euphoria and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi has returned home to lead a major Australian production.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television’s Curio Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios Australia, Narrow Road debuted on Amazon Prime Video on April 18, but the limited series, speaking to its feature-like qualities, premiered its first two episodes at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. In his review, The Hollywood Reporter‘s film critic David Rooney was gushing in his praise of those first two episodes, describing Narrow Road as “big, bold and strikingly cinematic.” “Based on the first 90 minutes, The Narrow Road to the Deep North has potential to stand alongside films like Peter Weir...

Plot: The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a savagely beautiful five-part series charting the life of Dorrigo Evans, through his passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney, his time held captive in a Pow camp, and his later years spent as a revered surgeon and reluctant war hero. An intimate character study of a complex man, a compelling portrayal of the courage and cruelty of war, and an unforgettable love story that sustains one through the darkest of times.

“The Order” (2024) is a brooding investigative thriller that puts another feather in director Justin Kurzel’s cap. After the chilling character portraits in “Nitram” and “The Snowtown Murders,” Kurzel returns with an equally harrowing depiction of evil in human beings. This time, he shifts his focus toward a White Supremacist terrorist group that was active in the 1980s. He paints the picture of a small American town mainly through the eyes of an FBI agent, who ends up in a cat-and-mouse chase with the terrorist group’s members. Although the plot essentially leads us toward its leader’s capture, it is more interested in interrogating the human tendencies that affect the usual order of any place, and how people react in such situations of change.

World War II continues to be explored by artists in interesting and varied ways even after all these years, and you can add Prime Video's new series to the list. The difference this time around is that the show is universally acclaimed, with a 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on that and other indicators, it looks like audiences will unanimously love it, too. The Narrow Road to the Deep North is the title in question, a five-part miniseries releasing April 18 on Prime Video, and is an adaptation of the 2014 Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan. It's directed by Justin Kurzel, who had recent success with The Order, and was a big hit at the 2025 Berlinale.

After watching The Narrow Road to the Deep North, I felt we are clearly living in the golden age of streaming television, where bold, striking, and emotionally charged works of art have found a home on the small screen—each one packed with the intensity of a powder keg. From the Taylor Sheridan multiverse, Netflix’s powerful Adolescence, and Hulu’s pulpy Paradise, to the unnerving, Kafkaesque Severance, the streaming wars have delivered incredible stories to our fingertips.
Now, Prime Video’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North joins that prestigious lineup—a series so masterfully crafted, it deserves to be seen on the biggest of screens. It’s a hypnotic and stunningly human take on the war-military genre, haunting and immersive, with a brooding, dark ambiance that lingers long after the final episode. The year may only be four months in, but this is already one of its...

The criminally underrated The Order did not gain as much attention as other titles released on the big screen in 2024. Last year provided moviegoers a number of critically acclaimed features across various genres, leaving the Justin Kurzel-directed crime thriller somewhat overshadowed. However, that doesn’t mean the film wasn’t a critical success, with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score as of this writing. Now, the movie is bound to be introduced to a much wider audience this month. The Order — starringJude Lawand Nicholas Hoult — will be added to Hulu's extensive library starting April 18, 2025.
The crime thriller boasts an ensemble cast led by Law and Hoult, both of whom have impressive acting portfolios under their belts. Law, best known for his performance in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley, has continued to prove his range as an actor time and again with a range of genres, including comedy, thriller, drama, and action.

Jacob Elordi and director Justin Kurzel spoke about making their new series, “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” at a preview screening in Melbourne, Australia.
Adapted from Richard Flanagan’s Man Booker Prize–winning novel, “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” draws on his father’s experience as a prisoner of war in Burma during World War II. Director Justin Kurzel and screenwriter Shaun Grant adapted the novel into an emotionally charged five-part series for Amazon Prime Video in Australia. (Read IndieWire’s review here as we await distribution in North America.)
Spanning three decades, the story follows army surgeon Dorrigo Evans through a lovestruck youth, brutal captivity in a Japanese Pow camp, and the long shadow of memory in old age. Evans is played by Elordi in the 1940s and by Ciarán Hinds in the 1980s, as the older man reckons with the defining experiences of his youth.

Nicholas Hoult has signed on to star in the untitled bank heist thriller that David Leitch is directing for Amazon MGM Studios and Imagine Entertainment.
Leitch will also produce with wife and producing partner Kelly McCormick via their 87North banner, alongside Imagine’s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum.
Amazon, Imagine and 87North are keeping plot details locked in a vault, but the script is written by Mark Bianculli, who was a writer and consulting producer on Amazon’s Nazi hunting show Hunters.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the story centers on a group of savvy bank robbers who use social media to document their heists, playing a cat-and-mouse game with police. Bianculli and Imagine have spent the better part of a decade developing the project, according to sources. It is unclear who Hoult would play.
A summer shoot is being planned, and Amazon is planning to release the feature in theaters.
