Exclusive: Queer advocacy group Out in Hollywood released its second annual list of the best unproduced queer-focused television pilot scripts of the past year.
The 2022 Out Loud List was selected from among hundreds of nominations submitted from across the industry and evaluated based on criteria including the strength of the writer’s voice, viability of the project to be sold in today’s marketplace, and conceptual freshness. A group of readers (including proudly out network/studio execs and producers) helped narrow down the list, which was then curated by Out in Hollywood’s board of directors.
“As challenges continue to present themselves against fundamental rights in our country and abroad, it’s more important than ever to continue championing marginalized voices,” says Logan Kriete, founder of the organization. “Lack of representation and advancement of our basic humanity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when we don’t tell these stories, and it...

Editor’s Note: Cinematographer Doug Emmett shot 11 of the 12 episodes — and made his directorial debut (Episode Five) — on HBO’s new series “Room 104,” created by Mark and Jay Duplass. The anthology series is radically different than other HBO shows, which often feature big budgets and have a high production value. For “Room 104,” the creative team followed a road map that was far more akin to the Duplass brothers’ ultra-low budget indie films — confining themselves to one room, small crews, and other cost-saving limitations — than how they made their previous HBO show “Togetherness.”
IndieWire recently asked Emmett — who has worked with the Duplass Brothers on a number of their films, as well as “Togetherness” — how exactly do you make an ultra-low budget TV show for HBO?

When was the last time you saw a cinematic sex scene that felt anything like real life? Movies can’t seem to help turning sex into a glossy fantasy, or else a joke – among recent releases, you can give Trainwreck some credit for realism in depicting intercourse, but never without a laugh to follow. So it’s particularly refreshing, to some degree even shocking, to see sex depicted with the kind of frankness and wisdom on display in The Diary of a Teenage Girl. The film isn’t visually overindulgent; there is nudity and there are sex scenes, but the film is more concerned with the larger emotional context of the carnal activity. It’s about what the concerned parties want out of the sex itself, what they want out of each other, and how they do or don’t get it. That’s about as real as it gets.

Trevor Wright photographed by Clinton Gaughran for AfterElton
At 30 years old, Trevor Wright can claim his ride in the entertainment industry has been both varied and very long. He began as a Gap spokeskid who landed a role in Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl" video alongside Elijah Wood, and he grew up landing roles on The George Lopez Show, NYPD Blue, Scrubs, and Boston Public. Then came the role for which AfterElton.com readers tend to be most appreciative: Zack in Shelter, the 2007 independent gay romance written by the film's director Jonah Markowitz. Wright's innocence and sensitivity in the role helped seal its position in our poll of the 100 greatest gay films ever -- it came in at #1. Yes, ahead of Brokeback Mountain. Anne Hathaway's resentment is palpable.

Tom Cullen and Chris New spend the weekend together in Andrew Haigh's Weekend Writer-director Andrew Haigh's gay love story Weekend scored the highest per-theater average this weekend (Sept. 23-25) at the North American box office according to Box Office Mojo. Screening at one New York City theater, the Sundance Selects-distributed Weekend — which, by the way, has nothing to do with Jean-Luc Godard's 1967 film of the same name — grossed an estimated $25,200. For the mathematically challenged: $25,200 at one theater equals a $25,200 per-theater average. Featuring Tom Cullen and Chris New as two gay men who during a seemingly long weekend discover that a one-night stand has metamorphosed into something more profound, the British-made Weekend has been greeted by overwhelmingly positive reviews. Haigh's movie, in fact, has a 96% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' critics, with Salon's Andrew O'Hehir calling it "one of the bravest, most honest and most accomplished stories of...

Q: Hey Arnold, the popular 1990s TV show on Nickelodeon, is known for subtly touching on issues which most, if not all, other children's shows wouldn't touch. For example, one of the character's moms was obviously an alcoholic, and the kids' fourth-grade teacher was gay (this was confirmed by the guy who made the show, Craig Bartlett). Are there any other children's shows with gay characters, whose gayness has been officially confirmed? -- Selina, Suny Oneonta
A: You’re right that creator Craig Barlett did confirm, after-the-fact, that Robert Simmons, Arnold’s second fourth grade teacher (voiced by Frasier’s Dan Butler, an out actor), was gay.

Sxsw recently concluded a week-long unveiling of some of the best and brightest new talent that indie film has to offer, but that didn't deter established players from forging ahead with the fine traditions that have this week brought us an Owen Wilson kiddie comedy, a poker mockumentary and an imitation of whatever Asian cinema was doing four years ago.
"Boarding Gate"
Three-time Palme D'Or nominee Olivier Assayas delivers a sleek and sexually charged thriller that stars the irresistible Asia Argento as a gal on the run from Europe to Asia as she indulges in affairs with both Michael Madsen's high-flying financier and the hit man sent to target him. If you can take your eyes off of Argento, keep one eye open for a supporting turn by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.
