The latest Castlevania: Nocturne trailer shows the 7-minute opening scene from the anime spinoff’s first episode.
With less than 24 hours until Clive Bradley and Kevin Kolde’s Castlevania: Nocturne hits your screens, Netflix realized we would need more than a teaser, a behind-the-scenes video, or some preview photographs to keep us entertained.
Fortunately, the streamer’s Drop 01 event celebrated Netflix’s greatest animation on the way.

This Castlevania review contains spoilers.
When Netflix’s Castlevania animated series first released in 2017, it was nothing short of a miracle: at last fans had a video game adaptation that was not only worthy of its beloved source material but was also a hell of a lot of fun to watch in its own right, especially in its early, Dracula-focused seasons. Netflix got the formula very right back then and its sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, largely nails it too, even if its 8-episode first season sometimes drags in the middle.
Set in 1792, about 300 years after the adventures of Trevor Belmont, the events of Nocturne unfold during the chaos of the French Revolution, a very suitable backdrop for all the gruesome violence that ensues at the crack of a Belmont whip. Returning directors Sam and Adam Deats go for broke with action sequences that extract every last ounce of blood, guts,...

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series helped break barriers for not only its medium, but also the longstanding stigma that video game adaptations were doomed to fail. Castlevania gracefully bowed out after telling a complete story over the course of four seasons. However, it was revealed that the franchise would continue, albeit with new Castlevania series within the same universe, almost in a style that’s akin to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Castlevania: Nocturne is the first of these new Castlevania series and it follows Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, and a team of intrepid monster hunters in an apocalyptic struggle that’s set against the French Revolution. Castlevania: Nocturne builds upon its predecessor’s strong foundation and finds a careful balance that will appease both fans of the original and newcomers alike. You can read my full review of the debut season here.

A new Castlevania anime series is in the works at Netflix, which should come as no surprise considering the success of the first show and how well received it was by fans of the video game franchise. With its four-season Castlevania series, the streamer did the impossible: produce a video game adaptation that is not only faithful and respectful to its source material but is also entertaining and unique in its own right.
Indeed, one of the secrets to the series’ success is that it added layers of complexity to stories that had previously only been told in pixelated form on 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. Netflix’s Castlevania not only explored new facets of iconic characters like Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard but it gave their stories added historical context, placing them right in the middle of Game of Thrones-like power struggles of the land of Wallachia during the Middle Ages.

With fresh investment from The Raine Group in hand, Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate has bought into Incognita, the French shingle run by Edouard de Vesinne. The timing worked for both sides with Propagate having a warchest for investments after Raine backed the company, and De Vesinne exiting EuropaCorp.
“This was the first chance for us to collaborate for the European and global market,” Silverman told Variety. “Edouard understands the global market while being committed to, and part of, Europe. We see an opportunity to be a local supplier to the big global streamers that we have good relationships with, but also to focus on local markets.”
The deal has closed and speaking from Paris, Silverman said that the first projects are underway. These include “Art of War,” a drama from Clive Bradley (“Trapped”), a high-end scripted series described as being in a similar vein to BBC and AMC show “The Night Manager.
