Fun Trailer for B-Movie Sequel 'Apex Predators 2' with Vernon Wells
Image
"Local experts believe it to be the work of a rogue shark." Wild Eye Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for another trashy B-movie shark horror comedy coming up this year - this one is called Apex Predators 2: The Spawning. Yes indeed, it's another direct-to-video sequel to the original direct-to-video bad spoof movie Apex Predators (from 2021). In this one, mutated flying Sharks wreak havoc along the beach during an annual volleyball tournament. Vernon Wells encounters horror from the heavens in the highly anticipated sequel to Apex Predators. Also starring Christopher Showerman, Brinke Stevens, Mel Novak, Dawna Lee Heising, and Jennifer Nangle. Ferguson's Apex Predators 2 is the "feverishly fun new horror film from the makers of Mega Ape and Space Sharks!" And it looks just as terrible as those ones, of course. You might just believe sharks really can fly after watching this movie.

‘Agent Recon’ Review
Image
Stars: Derek Ting, Chuck Norris, Marc Singer, Yarett Harper, Jason Scott Jenkins, Nikki Leigh, Christopher Showerman | Written and Directed by Derek Ting

It wasn’t mentioned in any of the film’s publicity, but Agent Recon is the third film in a trilogy that began in 2017 with Agent Intelligence and continued with Agent Revelation in 2021. That’s understandable, considering the first film was so unmemorable I forgot I’d seen it until I saw the second film’s flashback scenes. The second one did stick with me, but only because it was such a train wreck

A quick voiceover by Jim Yung, played by writer/director/star Derek Ting, gives anyone who hasn’t seen them a basic idea of their plot which involve evil aliens called Kinians, a super secret organization devoted to fighting them and the mysterious red dust that can either let the aliens control you, or...

George Of The Jungle Gave Brendan Fraser Unexpected Parental Complaints
Image
George of the Jungle star Brendan Fraser says that he got a number of unexpected parental complaints from parents following the release of the hit live-action Disney movie. Fraser starred in the film as the titular George, a young man raised in the jungle that has a habit of swinging on vines into trees. The Disney family comedy released in 1997 to mixed reception, although it ended up being a box office success.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on their Awards Chatter podcast, Fraser revealed that he received many complaints surrounding George of the Jungle, in particular from parents whose children began to behave like his character. Well before Fraser became known for The Mummy, it seemed that he was accidentally inspiring kids who wanted to be like George to smash into trees. Check out what Fraser had to say below:

For a while there, parents were stopping me going,...

‘Waking Karma’ Review – Religious Cult Thriller Lacks in Thrills
Image
Between a creepy ritual murder and a montage of newspaper headlines about cults, Waking Karma shows promise in its first few minutes. The story then shifts to its young main character, Karma (Hannah Christine Shetler), who is struggling to tell her mother Sunny (Kimberly Alexander) about her acceptance to Harvard. What should be good news becomes the start of an uncomfortable and long overdue conversation. Karma doesn’t know how Sunny will react; the two have been inseparable since they escaped a cult.

Carlos Montaner and Liz Fania Werner’s movie loses its mystique as soon as Karma asks her mother about her estranged father, Paul, and Sunny does what she always does; she acts shifty and stays quiet. Regardless of her weirdness, Karma doesn’t suspect anything. Not even when the two receive a foreboding letter from Paul, saying he’s coming for his daughter. The timing of the letter,...

Brendan Fraser rejected 'George of the Jungle 2' over Disney's low offer
Image
Actor Brendan Fraser’s 1997 comedy favourite ‘George of the Jungle’ spawned a 2003 direct-to-dvd sequel in which Fraser was replaced by actor Christopher Showerman. Several characters comment on the actor switch in ‘George of the Jungle 2’, with one joking that Disney was too cheap to hire Fraser for a second time.

Fraser recently confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he was approached for ‘George of the Jungle 2’ but turned down the offer because of the salary, reports ‘Variety’.

“I think ‘George’ got a remake, and they built a joke into it that the studio was too cheap to hire me, which wasn’t inaccurate,” Fraser said.

“I was approached. I can’t remember what I was doing at the time, but I felt like I wanted to go do ‘The Quiet American’ instead with Michael Caine, and shoot the first Western film in Vietnam ever, directed by Phillip Noyce, to tell an infinitely American story,...

Questioning Domestic Complacency in 'Complacent' Indie Film Trailer
Steven R. Monroe
"She is never, ever allowed in my house again!" Dust Bowl Pictures has debuted a brand new official trailer for an indie drama titled Complacent, written & directed by filmmaker Steven R. Monroe (I Spit on Your Grave). Strangely this film is listed on IMDb as originally premiering in 2012, but I can't find any info as to where it premiered then, even though it's only just now getting a release (8 years later...?). It definitely looks like it was made years ago... Two sisters, Myah and Beth, struggle with their differences in life and in the older sister's mentally abusive marriage, until the lives of Beth and their friends are shaken to the core by a tragedy that they are all forced to face. Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever) & Kerri Green (The Goonies) star as Myah & Beth, joined by Joey Kern, Keir O'Donnell, Elisa Donovan, Christopher Showerman, Michael Worth, and Adrienne Barbeau. This does not look good,...

Luke Hemsworth in Official Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi Thriller 'Encounter'
"We need to contain this." Vega Baby has released an official trailer for the indie sci-fi thriller Encounter, which is being released straight-to-vod at the start of October. This premiered at the Other Worlds Austin Film Festival last year, but hasn't played at any other fests - which is not a good sign. It's about a group of friends who uncover an alien object in a rural field, which they learn holds great secrets. The object attaches itself to one of them, but what is it doing to him? Starring Luke Hemsworth (not to be confused with his brothers Chris and Liam), with Anna Hutchison, Glenn Keogh, Christopher Showerman, Vincent M. Ward, Cheryl Texiera, and Tom Atkins. Looks as bad as it sounds, but maybe it's still a fun B-movie. Here's the full official trailer (+ two posters) for Paul Salamoff's Encounter, direct from YouTube: A group of friends...

‘Terror Tales’ Review
Stars: Christopher Showerman, Lynn Lowry, Jonathan Tiersten, Yan Birch, Laurene Landon, Jennifer Runyon, Ari Lehmann, Ashley Park, Felissa Rose, Helen Udy, Leana Lewis, Natalie Waldrip | Written and Directed by Jimmy Lee Combs

A horror anthology fan for many years, I’ll admit I was excited for Terror Tales, and I so wish that it had delivered. Firstly, The Wrapround Story… When a vacationing family are abducted on the road by a psychopath, known only as The Driver, they are told three tales of terror whilst being subjected to violence and mind games, their fate hanging in the balance.

We start with tale number one, By Proxy. I would love to tell you what the segment is actually about, but I honestly don’t think I know myself. Famous writer Susan McKay is, I think, struggling to cope with her young Sons suicide, or so it seems. It then becomes apparent,...

'Supergirl' Races 'The Flash' in New DC Crossover Trailer
David Harewood, Chyler Leigh, Jesse Rath, Azie Tesfai, Melissa Benoist, Katie McGrath, and Nicole Maines in Supergirl (2015)
When The Flash debuted on The CW in 2014, Grant Gustin's Barry Allen was dubbed The Fastest Man on Earth, after receiving metahuman powers following the S.T.A.R. Labs explosion. Of course, there have been a few who can contest this claim, such as the villainous Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) and now the new Season 2 villain Zoom, a.k.a. Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears). But a new contender has entered the mix: Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). Earlier today, the Supergirl Twitter page debuted a new trailer that teases these heroes will actually race one another to determine who the fastest human really is.

This new footage comes just one day after another brief trailer which showed Kara and Barry meeting for the first time. We also recently saw a Supergirl / The Flash crossover poster, which was essentially a parody of the iconic Superman #199 cover from DC Comics. This story...

'Supergirl' Meets 'The Flash' in DC Crossover Trailer

In just a few weeks, the superhero meeting everyone has been waiting for will finally arrive, when Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) finds himself in Kara Zor-El's (Melissa Benoist) National City in The Flash and Supergirl crossover episode, World's Finest, airing Monday, March 28. Just one week after the first poster and plot details surfaced, DC Entertainment has released the first trailer for this special episode, along with new photos, showing Barry and Kara coming face to face for the first time. Unfortunately, it's only a brief tease of footage, but hopefully we'll see a full trailer very soon.

The Supergirl / The Flash crossover poster was essentially a parody of the iconic Superman #199 cover from DC Comics, which featured Superman and The Flash set to race to see who the fastest man on the planet truly is. While we're not totally sure if a race actually happens in World's Finest, the story...

Vitals Interview Series Part 5: Director Marc Morgenstern
Vitals is a new claustrophobic horror movie from director Mark Morgenstern. The film stars Christopher Showerman as Richard Carsen, a man who’s trying save his on-the-rocks marriage by taking his wife on vacation to India. Unfortunately, he winds up on ice and about to be harvested for his organs.

Morgenstern recently directed a documentary on the effects of infidelity in the electronic age. It’s called Affairs Across America: The Ashley Madison Story and is centered around the multimillionaire internet guru who started the infamous non-singles dating website with the slogan: “Life is short. Have an affair.”

Perhaps that was the impetus for making his lead character/victim in Vitals a cheating husband. We asked. Read on to find out what Morgenstern said.

Dread Central: So, Morgenstern… any relation to Rhoda? I’m sure you never heard that before; I just thought I'd throw out that little brilliant, totally unique joke of mine.

Vitals Interview Series Part 4: Kalex Reno
Vitals tells the harrowing tale of a man (Christopher Showerman) who is kidnapped while on vacation in India. He wakes up in an abandoned motel room in a tub of ice with a kidney missing. Little does he know, it’s his heart his captors want next...

And it's only a matter of time before he discovers his wife (Charlene Amoia) in the adjacent room waiting to be the next victim to the organ-harvesting goons. Having taken the vacation to work on their failing marriage, the couple must now set their differences aside and use each other's intellects and skills to escape before their captors return.

We sat down with Vitals producer on set one day, midway through shooting, to see what was up.

Dread Central: So, you’re the producer. What does that mean, exactly, on this set? Seems to me like you’re doing a little bit of everything!

Vitals Interview Series Part 3: Christopher Showerman
Although Christopher Showerman is a very fit actor (having swung from a vine wearing only a loincloth and muscles in the George of the Jungle sequel, to mention just one rather physical role), he spends most of his time in the new horror movie Vitals unconscious, semi-conscious, and about to be knocked unconscious.

He plays Richard Carson, a man who’s taken his wife on vacation to India in hopes of fixing their severed marriage… unfortunately, it’s he who is severed when he runs afoul of some nasty organ-snatchers who kidnap him and start a’cutting.

Dread Central: How’d you first hear about this role?

Christopher Showerman: They sent me the script when I was on vacation in another state, and it showed up on my phone.

DC: It would have been better if it was in another country. Next time, adjust your story. Like, “Yes, I...

Vitals Interview Series Part 2: Sachin Mehta
So, the Pope and a Cardinal are sitting together on a cross-country flight. The Pope is doing a crossword puzzle. He turns to the Cardinal and asks, “Do you know a four-letter word for ‘woman’ that ends in U-n-t?” The Cardinal unhesitatingly says, “Aunt.” The Pope blinks and replies, “Oh yes, of course. Do you have an eraser?”

While you may think that hoary old joke has nothing to do with horror, there actually is a connection – you see, the villain in the upcoming horror film Vitals loves crossword puzzles and he’s got a wicked, skewed sense of humor.

Kaliya, the brains behind the body-plundering organ-snatching ring of criminals, is played by Sachin Mehta. Mehta was in character dealing with uppity henchmen, an unconscious victim, and doing a crossword puzzle just before he sat down to talk with us. Here’s what he had to say.

Vitals Interview Series Part 1: Charlene Amoia
Charlene Amoia, who’s now famous for being “the Mother” on the ever-popular TV sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," had only appeared in an episode or two before we caught up with her on the set of the gory new organ-theft thriller, Vitals.

Far from the cushy network TV gig, she spends her days covered in fake bruises and blood, sequestered in a remote independent studio in the San Fernando Valley. In Vitals, Amoia plays Dr. Jane Carson, a woman whose medical degree gets her nowhere after her husband is kidnapped and surgically plundered for his kidneys right before her eyes. Still, the knowledge does come in handy – read on, to find out what she has to say about that.

Dread Central: So, what sort of doctor do you play in this film?

Charlene Amoia: I’m not sure, because only part that that comes into play is...

How I Met Your Mother Star Cast in Saw-esque Thriller Vitals
The Saw franchise helped kick off the so-called “torture porn” sub-genre of horror films, And whether or not you choose to accept its existence doesn’t deny that it has spawned a resurgence in the Grand Guignol.

For his film Vitals, it’s clear writer/director Marc Morgenstern wants to keep the legacy of James Wan’s franchise alive.

Morgenstern has just announced that “How I Met Your Mother” star Charlene Amoia (pictured) and Christopher Showerman (The Land That Time Forgot, Complacent) have been cast in his Saw-esque thriller that begins shooting in Los Angeles next month.

Vitals features Showerman as an unassuming electrician who wakes up in an abandoned motel room in a tub of ice with his kidney missing. It’s only a matter of time before he finds his wife in the adjacent room waiting to be the next victim to a horrible organ harvesting organization.

First Howl Delayed; Recession at Fault; Condition Dead Moving Forward
Many moons ago (November, 2007, to be exact), we first told you about an upcoming "satirical werewolf film" called Howl that was gearing up for production.

The title referred to the surname of the lead character, John Howl, a mixed-up cop/werewolf who's obsessed with the Eighties and hot on the trail of a murderer in Hollywood. The script was written by Clint Morris, and the talent in talks for various roles included Eric Stoltz, Stephen Tobolowsky, Kam Heskin, Powers Boothe, and Muse Watson.

Now, several months later, we heard back from Morris, who pointed us in the direction of his blog, Caffeinated Clint on Moviehole.net. It seems the project, now renamed First Howl (the artwork on your right is from our earlier story), didn't quite make its planned February 14th, 2009, start date due to current economic conditions. As Clint explains it, "The company in charge of the pic, and...

C. Thomas Howell Going Back In Time
Lost has cornered the market on mysterious islands for the time being, but let's not forget our ancestors. The Land That TIme Forgot, both the book by Edgar Rice Burroughs and the 1975 film, probably deserves some credit for the whole "shipwrecked on a crazy island" idea, and with a remake of the film coming this year, maybe it'll finally get the recognition it deserves. Yup, there's a remake coming, featuring another band of shipwreck survivors who find themselves on an island inhabited by dinosaurs and Neanderthals. Moviehole has the exclusive details on the bizarre-sounding project, which will be directed by 80s actor icon C. Thomas Howell and will feature him, Christopher Showerman and Timothy Bottoms in the cast. Even stranger, they're planning to have the movie out later this year. Forgive me if I'm operating on stereotypes, but how would a movie directed by a B-list actor and featuring no...
