CBS’s “MacGyver” reboot will end with its currently airing fifth season, the network announced Wednesday.
“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves.”
The show’s final episode will be its Season 5 finale, airing Friday, April 30.
Launched in 2016, “MacGyver” is a reimagining of the classic series, starring Lucas Till as Angus “Mac” MacGyver, an agent for a clandestine organization within the U.

Exclusive: Angus MacGyver will soon be taking on his last mission. The CBS action drama, a reimagining of the 1985 series, is coming to an end. MacGyver‘s five-season run will conclude with a series finale, which will air Friday, April 30, in the show’s regular 8 Pm time slot.
Starring Lucas Till as the ingenious title character, an undercover government agent with strong engineering skills, MacGyver has averaged a respectable 5.85 million viewers and a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating (most current) this season under new showrunner Monica Macer. Since its September 23, 2016 launch, the series has had the thankless job of opening CBS’ Friday lineup at 8 Pm, providing solid lead-in to Hawaii Five-0/Magnum P.I. at 9 Pm and Blue Bloods at 10 Pm.

If you grew up from 1985 to 1992, then the original MacGyver was a staple in our homes. Richard Dean Anderson played Angus MacGyver. For years he went on adventures where he solved problems often with nothing other than his wits and a couple of small items like a paperclip and a pocket knife. The solution-oriented genius of this show was something we looked forward to for years. Fans were disappointed, to say the least when the show ended. Then in 2016, we learned there was to be a reboot. The very talented Lee David Zlotoff has been an admirable

Following the departure of co-star George Eads, “MacGyver” has cast Levy Tran who play a new character who is designed to help fill the void left by Eads.
Eads had co-starred on the CBS drama alongside Lucas Till, MacGyver’s field partner Jack Dalton, since the show’s start in 2016. Tran’s first episode will be Feb. 15.
Tran will join the series in a recurring role, with the option of getting promoted to series regular, should the show get picked up for a fourth season. Tran most recently recurred on Netflix’s “The Haunting Of Hill House.”

Last month, we reported news out of Comic-Con that the retooled MacGyver TV show reboot on CBS wants to bring on the original Angus MacGyver -- Richard Dean Anderson -- in some fashion. The new series stars Lucas Till in the title role. The cast also includes George Eads, Sandrine Holt, Justin Hires, and Tristan Mays.Reporting from the TCA summer presser for CBS, The Wrap writes showrunner Peter Lenkov said the new production has been talking to Anderson's reps, adding, "We hope he says yes." Lenkov executive produces with Craig O’Neill, James Wan, Henry Winkler, Lee Zlotoff, and Michael Clear. CBS is enlisting MacGyver to help fortify its 2016-2017 schedule.
The much-hyped reboot was one of four dramas the Eye network ordered to series on Friday, joining Jerry Bruckheimer’s Training Day remake, the Michael Weatherly-fronted Bull, and Jason Katims’ medical entry Pure Genius (fka Bunker Hill).
On the comedy side, CBS has Ok’d Joel McHale’s workplace sitcom The Great Indoors and Matt LeBlanc’s family satire Man With a Plan (fka I’m Not Your Friend). Speaking of the latter, The Office‘s Jenna Fischer — who was set to play LeBlanc’s wife — has exited the project for creative reasons.

When it comes to figuring out why spy series MacGyver is getting a TV reboot, your guess is as good as mine, but today brings some news about what it’s going to look like, in the form of two cast additions.
Addison Timlin, known best for Californication but most familiar to this writer as the love interest for Anton Yelchin in Stephen Sommers’ under-appreciated Odd Thomas, has boarded the CBS project in the lead female role. She’s playing Mickey, an app developer who’s aggressively progressive in her political views but harbors a soft spot for Lucas Till’s MacGyver. Meanwhile, Michelle Krusiec (Hawaii Five-o) will play Agent Croix, who works for the Department of Homeland Security and is sister to a character named Lincoln (George Eads).

"X-Men" actor Lucas Till will step into the shoes of Richard Dean Anderson, taking on the iconic character of MacGyver in CBS' upcoming reimagining of the early 1990s series.
The new take follows a twenty-something MacGyver (Till) as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.
The casting caps a weeks-long search by CBS. The network originally had a script by R. Scott Gemmill ("NCIS: La") but instead have picked up the pilot without a script after deciding to go with a new pitch from Paul Downs Colaizzo ("Lfe") who was initially attached to the project when it was in development.
Joshua Boone has also joined the drama pilot as a series regular, playing MacGyver's best friend from high school named Gunner. George Eads ("CSI") is also onboard to co-star.

Following last October’s announcement that the classic 1980’s action series MacGyver would be returning to CBS, news out of a Lionsgate analysts meeting this morning has revealed that the company is simultaneously planning a big-budget movie reboot of the show as well.
The movie will reportedly be produced by the show’s creator, Lee David Zlotoff, with Fast and Furious franchise producer Neal Moritz coming in to help as well. Although there was no confirmation of the plot for the film, since both the TV show and movie reboot will be created by Lionsgate, it seems that the studio is attempting to set up a new shared universe for the action-heavy franchise.
Regarding the television version, director James Wan (Furious 7, The Conjuring) has been chosen to direct the pilot of the show, with writer Paul Downs Colaizzo on script duties. Although Wan was previously attached to a MacGyver...

I'm surprised it's taken Hollywood this long to get around to making a movie based on the classic TV series MacGyver. While CBS and James Wan are planning a remake of the show, Lionsgate is moving forward with plans to make a movie.
The news comes from Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, and he also reveals that the movie will be produced by series creator Lee David Zlotoff and Neal Moritz, who is the producer of the Fast and Furious franchise.
MacGyver aired on ABC from 1985 to 1992 and it starred Richard Dean Anderson as secret agent Angus MacGyver. He worked for the Department of External Services and one of his main talents was his ability to solve complex problems in intense situations with ordinary items that he randomly had access to.
A MacGyver movie could be a lot of fun, especially if it gets a solid team of talent on board to develop it.

You can't keep old TV series from being warmed over like last week's roast quite like Hollywood can, and once again, they are trying to make "MacGyver" happen. Twice over. Earlier this week, Deadline reported that CBS ordered a pilot for a new "MacGyver" TV show, one that would focus on the exploits of young, 20-something Angus MacGyver, whose knack for using paper clips, seaweed, and pocket lint to get out of life threatening situations, lands him a sweet gig with a clandestine organization. No word yet on who will fill that title role, but the thing is, that's not all. Variety reveals that Lionsgate is now mounting a "MacGyver" movie reboot. Series creator Lee David Zlotoff and "The Fast & The Furious" mastermind Neal Moritz are working on the project, though that's about all the details for now.

A curious thing has happened this season on "Sleepy Hollow": When you watch the opening sequence (above), what do you see? The answer is some weird gothic imagery and some very attractive people. Specifically, though, you see one man and four women. Read More: 'MacGyver' Creator Lee Zlotoff On Women In Engineering And Finding a New Female Hero It came as a bit of a surprise, seeing that, when you consider that from a very early age, we're trained to accept a female minority on the shows we watch — the Smurfette Principle, as once defined by writer Katha Pollitt. And it raised the question of how "Sleepy Hollow" compares with other shows of its ilk... so we made a spreadsheet. Personally I’d rather see a MacGruber sequel, but what do I know?
At any rate, New line is moving forward with a film version of the 80s TV show MacGyver and they’re in talks with James Wan to direct. Wan is mostly know for horror films such as Saw and Insidious and doesn’t seem an obvious choice to helm an action film, but sometimes those are the best choices.
The plot of the film is unknown, but one can assume, like the TV show, the MacGyver film will follow the title character as he fights bad guys using nothing but his wits and whichever stray objects he comes across.
The script was written by Jason Richman with a rewrite by Brian and Mark Gunn. Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis are producing along with Lee David Zlotoff.

The hiring of Wan indicates a likelihood that the film will stick to both a serious tone and a tight budget. "Insidious" was made for just $1.5 million and raked in nearly $100 million worldwide.

From blood-splattered horror to action-filled MacGyver! Reps for James Wan confirmed to EW on Monday that the Saw franchise and Insidious filmmaker is in negotiations with New Line to direct the movie based on the 1980s television series about a secret agent, played in the original by Richard Dean Anderson, who relies on brain vs. brawn to resolve sticky situations.

That's right, everyone's favorite mullet rocking government agent will be getting the movie treatment - probably minus the mullet this time around. Richard Dean Anderson played the character in the '80s tv series which ran for seven seasons. A member of a fictional government agency known as the Phoenix Foundation, MacGyver was famous for cobbling together makeshift weaponry from various mundane household objects. According to Variety New Line were suitably impressed by James Wan's most recent feature The Conjuring to offer him the gig. No plot details are known from Jason Richman's script yet, but it was recently recently worked over by Brian and Mark Gunn. Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis are producing through their Dino De Laurentiis Company shingle along with Lee David Zlotoff.

James Wan (upcoming The Conjuring , Insidious , Saw ) is in talks to direct the MacGyver movie at New Line Cinema, reports Variety . The film will be based on the 1980s TV series. Richard Dean Anderson, later of "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Sg-1" fame, starred as an incredibly resourceful secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation who frequently would escape from dangerous situations with ingenious and lightning-quick engineering trickery. Jason Richman wrote the script, which has received additional work by Brian and Mark Gunn. Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis are producing through their Dino De Laurentiis Company along with Lee David Zlotoff.

Saturday Night Live’s MacGyver parody MacGruber has opened in the Us this weekend (to abysmal box office receipts), and that has given New Line the opportunity to announce that their long-gestating big screen adaptation of the classic 80s television serieshas finally found a writer in Jason Richman, whose previous films include Rush Hour 3, Bad Company and the frankly terrible Nicolas Cage flick
MacGyver starred Richard Dean Anderson as an intrepid Indiana Jones style super spy whose ingenious use of everyday objects to get him out of tight spots rivalled even that of The A-Team!
Legendary producer Dino De Laurentis is behind this new take on the classic character along with Raffaella De Laurentiis, Martha De Laurentiis and original series creator Lee Zlotoff.

New Line has hired Jason Richman to write the script for its slow-moving adaptation of the ’80s TV series “MacGyver.”
THR’s article reminds us Richman is the writer of such clunkers as Bangkok Dangerous, Swing Vote, and Bad Company. His hiring also means a MacGyver movie is far from happening any time soon, which should give Shia Labeouf plenty of time to grow a mullet until they inevitably cast him.
Lee David Zlotoff, who created the hit show in 1985, is behind the more serious take on the resourceful hero that was formally announced in March 2009. Meanwhile, Relativity Media managed to piece together the “Saturday Night Live” spoof MacGruber in time for release this weekend which takes plenty of shots at Richard Dean Anderson’s character and a list of other explosive action properties. (Check out my review here.)

On the day that the spoof "MacGruber" hits theatres, a writer has been hired to pen a script for a film version of the series that inspired said spoof - ABC's late 80's action-drama "MacGyver" reports Risky Business.
New Line put the project into development back in March and now has selected Jason Richman ("Bad Company," "Black Hawk Down") to pen the film version which will likely stay a lot more straight-faced than "MacGruber".
Raffaella De Laurentiis, Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff are producing. No word on any further talent being involved in the project.

MacGruber may be hitting theaters this weekend but we have known for sometime that the inspiration behind the quirky SNL sketch, MacGyver was getting a big screen remake much like The A-Team’s big screen remake that will debut this summer.
New Line has now set Jason Richman to write the script for the feature film MacGyver, based on the adventure series that ran from 1985-92 on ABC and starred Richard Dean Anderson as a resourceful secret agent who uses ingenious, science-inspired trickery to escape danger, according to Risky Business.
Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, is producing through her Raffaella Prods. along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff. Dino De Laurentiis is exec producing.
Richman’s previous writings include, Bad Company, Bangkok Dangerous and Swing Vote. He seems like an interesting choice. I am just glad this project is moving forward.

With MacGruber set to hit theaters, Wanrer Bros/New Line is fast tracking development on a big screen adaptation of the hit television show MacGyver (development was first announced in March). Raffaella and Martha De Laurentiis are producing, along with series creator Lee Zlotoff. Risky Business is reporting that Jason Richman has been hired to pen the script. Richman is a credited screenwriter on Bangkok Dangerous, Swing Vote, and Bad Company, while he did uncredited work on films including Black Hawk Down, Rush Hour 3, and the proposed Beverly Hills Cop 4. Besides Bhd, Richman's resume of films looks pretty poor if you ask me. Previously from David Chen: Chidlren of the 80s may fondly recall that the TV show MacGyver ran for seven seasons, from 1985 through 1992. Aside from two made-for-tv films in 1994, we haven't heard that much from the character since, although he has graced us through a few...

Many people speculated that MacGruber, an upcoming film based on a series of 60-second spoofs on Saturday Night Live, would be a terrible idea. Then we saw the first two trailers for the film and realized it may actually turn out to be pretty funny. Now that the rest of the world is in agreement, there seems to be trouble ahead for the filmmakers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creator of the original MacGyver, Lee Zlotoff, had a deal with New Line back in March of 2009 to produce a film based on his 1985 series. The idea sat on a shelf for other projects like Friday The 13th and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past could come to fruition. Months later, Relativity Media went forward with their MacGruber production, which was basically a script mocking Zlotoff’s original premise.
Zlotoff was not happy about this, and began drafting cease-and-desist letters to Relativity.

It's been the kind of post-Oscar, glacially slow news day that made something like the potential of a MacGyver vs. MacGruber lawsuit a top story on the movie blogs today. Lee Zlotoff, who created the TV series "MacGyver," is contemplating a suit to enjoin MacGruber from theaters, arguing that fair use laws don't extend to a full-length movie. He may actually have a point, and in presenting an argument for damages, he could rightly argue that MacGruber would damage the reputation of his franchise, since Zlotoff actually has his eye set on making a big-screen version of MacGyver.
Still, it'll all probably disappear in a few weeks -- an undisclosed sum, a non-disclosure agreement, and it'll all go away, I imagine. And MacGruber will open in theaters on April 23rd, as planned.
However, assuming that things don't work out for Lorne Michaels and Co., and the lawsuit moves ahead, preventing the wide release of MacGruber,...

I really don't think there's anything you can litigate here, but it's America, so you know someone will try. That someone is Lee Zlotoff, who created MacGyver, and he's considering a lawsuit to keep MacGruber out of theaters, according to Latino Review.
Two problems, as I see it. First, parody has long been upheld by the Supreme Court, even in instances that are clearly for profit. That's called Fair Use, and though it's not infallible, in this instance there's plenty of precedent.
Secondly, if Zlotoff was really angry, he should have sued before now because the MacGruber character has been featured on Saturday Night Live for three years, even incorporating the original MacGyver, Richard Dean Anderson, at one point.

The man behind "MacGyver" is consulting lawyers in a bid to block the release of an upcoming spoof movie based on the 1980s TV series. Lee Zlotoff, creator of the 1980s TV series “MacGyver,” is not too happy with Will Forte’s upcoming parody movie MacGruber and is pursuing legal options to stop the April 23 release.
A source for Latino Review says Zlotoff is looking to not only shut the $15 million comedy down, but possibly require a large sum of money to be slid across a table in his direction, preferably in a silver briefcase that even Richard Dean couldn’t crack.
The elongated “Saturday Night Live” skit falls under the broad fair use clause that balances free speech against the rights of intellectual property holders. Zlotoff’s lawsuit likely includes unfair competition claims, according to legal resources for the Hollywood Reporter, since Zlotoff’s MacGyver movie was announced at New Line months before Lorne Michaels had the bright idea to spin off another unfunny skit onto the screen.
Cease-and-desist letters are out from Zlotoff’s attorney.

"MacGyver" creator Lee Zlotoff wants to stop the new "Saturday Night Live" skit-turned-movie "MacGruber" from seeing theaters.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Zlotoff, who created the 1985-1992 ABC "MacGyver" series, is sending cease-and-desist letters to executives at Relativity Media, the company responsible for the "MacGruber" movie, hitting theaters in April.
Apparently, Zlotoff retained the rights to the "MacGyver" franchise and a movie version of the popular Richard Dean Anderson television show is in the works (though there is no word as to whether Anderson will be involved), so Zlotoff and his lawyers feel they might have a case of copyright and/or trademark infringement and are seeking "an injunction against the film's release."
In copyright cases, "Fair Use" is the umbrella encompassing most arguments. Within the "Fair Use" doctrine lies the cover of "parody," which creators of "MacGruber" will probably argue. It will be interesting to see if Zlotoff can...

Twenty seconds MacGruber!
So fans of the Will Forte/Kristin Wiig 'Saturday Night Live' sketch 'MacGruber' are counting down the minutes to the April release of the big screen version of the small screen parody. Or maybe we're not counting the minutes. This movie could suck like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Or it could be really funny! Who knows? Movies based on 'SNL' sketches could easily go either way.
One person who doesn't want us to find out is Lee David Zlotoff. He created 'MacGyver' back in the 1980s and he wants to stop the movie from being released. Zlotoff has a deal to bring 'MacGyver' himself to the big-screen and doesn't want to see this parody there as well. Zlotoff's lawyer says that the film is "infringing on our rights." I wonder if the filmmakers neglected to get a thumbs up from Zlotoff and Paramount before making the movie?...

MacGruber is, surprisingly enough, an anxiously awaited film from the writers of “SNL.” Never would I have thought that the completely unfunny skit could be turned into a movie that looks so funny. Luckily, the red band trailer sold a lot of people on the film with its hilarious and vulgar content. There’s only one problem though, Lee Zlotoff – creator of the skit’s source material MacGyver – isn’t laughing.

For some reason, despite the fact that we've been disappointed over and over again, a lot of people are excited about the MacGruber movie, which could follow in the grand tradition of most movies based on SNL sketches or could actually be good.
