German acting legend Hanna Schygulla will be honored this year with a lifetime achievement award at the German Film Awards.
Best known for her work with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, including The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980), and Lili Marleen (1981), Schygulla’s career has included collaborations with the likes of Wim Wenders (1975’s Wrong Move), Jean-Luc Godard (1982’s Passion) and Fatih Akin (2007’s The Edge of Heaven). More recently, the 80-year-old actress has a scene-stealing cameo in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winner Poor Things as Martha von Kurtzroc, the eccentric woman Emma Stone’s character befriends on the cruise ship.
“Hanna Schygulla is an institution of German and European cinema,” said Alexandra Maria Lara, president of the German Film Academy, explaining the decision of the honorary jury. “Through her long-standing collaboration with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, she wrote herself into film history. She became an icon of German auteur cinema with international appeal.

Last June, the Berlin Film Festival made a double departure from tradition. With longtime chief Dieter Kosslick slated to step down this year, it decided to split the top job in two after his exit: an artistic director responsible for curation and an executive director to run the commercial side. Then it picked Mariette Rissenbeek for the latter position, making her the first woman to be chosen to co-lead a top-tier film festival. (Toronto named Joana Vincente to a similar post two months later.)
Rissenbeek, formerly managing director of promotional organization German Films, and co-chief Carlo Chatrian, who previously programmed the Locarno festival, formally start their new jobs June 1. But the pair have already been spending time at Berlinale headquarters in order to hit the ground running when they take charge of an event that is beloved by moviegoers but that some critics say has become too big — the 2019 edition...

Cannes -- Cannes may be the celebration of Le Cinema, but increasingly, European filmmakers are turning to the small screen to get their movies made.
Oliver Assayas' Out of Competition entry "Carlos," which had its first market screening Saturday ahead of its festival bow, is just the latest in a flood of hybrid productions that span the gap between film and TV.
Examples include Swedish crime sensation "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the critically acclaimed Brit noir trilogy "Red Riding" or German Oscar contender "The Baader Meinhof Complex." All were made simultaneously as films and as TV series, giving producers a double-dip of commission cash and film subsidies to build their budget.
"This is almost the standard way to produce in Germany. There are virtually no German movies made without TV money in them," said Regina Ziegler, who found the $20 million needed to bankroll Jo Baier's "Henry of...
