Laemmle/Zeller Films has acquired rights to “Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself” from directors Tom Bean and Luke Poling. The company plans an early spring theatrical release. The documentary was built from four years of interviews with the late writer and editor, plus Plimpton’s own archival material, including audio and video that allowed the filmmakers to use Plimpton’s own voice as narrator. Laemmle/Zeller Films has acquired two new titles for theatrical release. The duo, made up of veteran exhibitor Greg Laemmle and longtime marketer Steven Zeller, will bow Debra Granik's Down to the Bone in October and the Argentinean thriller Cautiva in first-quarter 2006. Industry veterans Greg Laemmle and Steven Zeller announced Monday the formation of a new Los Angeles-based theatrical distribution company, Laemmle/Zeller Films. Laemmle and Zeller said the company will focus on releasing smart, provocative independent films that normally fall through the cracks of the traditional distribution system, capitalizing on the pair's combined 40-year experience and established operations. Laemmle, president of Southern California's specialized theater chain Laemmle Theatres, and Zeller, president of GS Entertainment Marketing Group, are forming a "virtual" distribution company, whereby the work will emanate from the two principal's primary headquarters. Laemmle's personnel will book theaters, ship prints and settle boxoffice collections among other functions, while GS Entertainment will be responsible for all marketing aspects of the film. "By not taking on any additional overhead, we have no need to take films unless we feel they are really good," Laemmle said.
