David O. Russell’s Amsterdam is a lot of movies inelegantly squidged into one — a zany screwball comedy, a crime thriller, an earnest salute to pacts of love and friendship, an antifascist history lesson with fictional flourishes. Those competing strands all have their merits, bolstered by entertaining character work from an uncommonly high-wattage ensemble. But can any film be called satisfying when the storytelling is so convoluted it takes an hour or more to settle on the kind of story it wants to tell, let alone a cohesive tone in which to tell it? Only once Robert De Niro shows up as a distinguished war veteran drawn into a nefarious political conspiracy does momentum kick in.

The Pearsons may be gone, but they’re certainly not forgotten. A whopping 19 “This Is Us” cast members have been submitted by NBC on the 2022 Emmys ballot, including all of the core adult family members. That number includes three lead performers: Sterling K. Brown as Randall Pearson, Milo Ventimiglia as Jack Pearson and Mandy Moore as Rebecca Pearson. In years past, Justin Hartley as Kevin Pearson has also dabbled in lead, but for this final season he’s competing in supporting. One fan-fave guest star was not submitted on the Emmy ballot and thus cannot be nominated: 2017 winner Gerald McRaney, who returned in the penultimate episode as the ghost of lemonade-loving Dr. K.

” Do your parents *know* that you’re Ramones? “
Rock ‘N’ Roll High School plays midnights this weekend (August 16th and 17th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series. A Facebook invite for the event can be found Here
It’s amazing that actress P.J. Soles didn’t become a big star after playing Riff Randell, #1 fan of the punk rock group the Ramones, in Rock ‘N’ Roll High School in 1979. Soles is so exuberant, you don’t mind she’s obviously too old to still be a student in high school (that fact is leveled out by having all the kids look 25). The movie is a fast-paced frolic that doesn’t cop-out; everything gets blown to smithereens at the end, and that’s just as it should be. Mary Woronov, a kinky and funny presence as the Nazi-like principal, gets a great,...

Strange Behavior. What an apt title for this film. Released in 1981, Aka Dead Kids, Strange Behavior is a unique mash up of a popular (at the time) sub-genre and one long forgotten – the Slasher and The Mad Scientist. For fans of either, it provides a weird, loving tribute to the latter while quietly etching a place for itself in the former. A lot of horror lovers missed the boat on this one at the time of its release, which is strange behavior, indeed.
Given a limited release in October by World Northal stateside, Strange Behavior impressed many critics at the time with its ethereal quality and 50’s throwback feel, but audiences really never got a chance to see it until released on video the following year. And even then, it never picked up steam with the horror crowd. Which is quite sad, as the film still plays as a creepy,...

Everyone knows that in horror sequels are inevitable. When you hit the right chord and people dig it, it only makes sense. Determined to prove that the sequel can be as good the original, Days of the Dead has announced not one but two shows next year.
Based on the success of Days of the Dead in Indianapolis, they will be taking all of their shows and events to Atlanta, Georgia, March 9-11, 2012. But don't worry, they will be bringing the madness back to Indianapolis July 6-8, 2012.
Days of the Dead: Atlanta has already announced some of their guests including: Pj Soles (Halloween, Carrie, Stripes, Rock N' Roll High School), Dey Young (Rock N' Roll High School, Running Man, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Red Eye)- This will be the first Rock N' Roll High School reunion in 30 years, Gary Busey (Silver Bullet, Predator 2, Pirahna 3Dd), Taafe O' Connell (Galaxy of Terror,...

Edge of Darkness
Mel Gibson's return to acting is decent but not anything special. It's not as complex as the UK mini-series it's based on and there isn't a lot of action, so it ends up being just a lighter version of Taken.

On tonight's episode of The Mentalist, "A Price Above Rubies", something phenomenal happened: Patrick Jane didn't have all of the answers. This gave Lisbon plenty of smug satisfaction, especially after he terrified her in the show's opening scene.
Cho and Lisbon start off The Mentalist in formal wear, making nice at a charity banquet to one of the Cbi's benefactors, Esther Doverton (Dey Young). Jane takes the stage, supposedly to represent the Cbi with some magic tricks and mind-reading. After tossing an egg into the air–and invisibility–Jane announces he's dropping the act in order to "transform [their] consciousness." He then launches into a speech, about the cruelties and injustices of the world that are going on while they stand around and sip champagne. Lisbon is worried as the room falls silent, but Jane manages to turn the guests' guilt and discomfort into a show of solidarity and charitable contributions.

Howard Stern and producing partner Larry Levinson are planning a remake of the 1979 classic Rock 'n' Roll High School. The script is actually being written by Bill from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, aka in real life as Alex Winter, who has gone on to write and direct in addition to acting. Stern and Levinson are also remaking Porky's, with both films being personal favorites of Stern's. No director has been attached yet, but Winter explains "I've now done so much stuff in music videos, and the Napster movie, that the chance to bridge music and comedy was something that intrigued me. This movie seemed so ripe for a remake." Really? Ripe for a remake? Maybe after Paramount announced School of Rock 2! The original 1979 comedy was directed by Allan Arkush and starred P.J. Soles, Vincent Van Patten, Clint Howard, and Dey Young. The film is about a group ...

Studio chief and Hollywood agent Guy McElwaine has died following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71.
The showman, who was involved in blockbusters from All the President's Men to The Karate Kid, died on Wednesday at his Bel-Air home.
In the 1960s, McElwaine owned a management and public relations company whose clients included Frank Sinatra, Warren Beatty and The Mamas and The Papas.
The former brother-in-law of actress Dey Young joined Creative Management Associates, an agency that was the forerunner for the powerful International Creative Management and there, he is reported to be the first agent to sign filmmaker Steven Spielberg.
He enjoyed a brief stint at Warner Brothers as a senior executive in charge of worldwide motion picture production - putting together movies such as All the President's Men, Dog Day Afternoon and Oh God.
McElwine was also resident of Columbia Pictures, later becoming the studio's chairman and chief executive officer - helping produce blockbusters such as Ghostbusters and Gandhi.

Mark Canton's Artists Production Group has dipped into its discretionary fund to option Jane Heller's latest novel, The Secret Ingredient, with Jamie McGurk and Dey Young attached to produce through their Off Balance Prods. Heller also will adapt the novel, marking the author's first foray into screenwriting. The project reteams Heller with Off Balance as the duo most recently set up Heller's forthcoming novel, Lucky Stars, at Lakeshore Entertainment (HR 9/24). Ingredient is a romantic comedy about a dissatisfied wife who tries to change her husband with the help of a magic potion. The quick fix proves disastrous when her overworked husband with a paunchy stomach and balding head becomes a hunk who is irresistible to women.
