- I've been a producer for 26 years and, as a producer, I've always been linear and uncomplicated. I felt my job was to create a hermetically sealed bubble around the director. Directing changed me completely and changed my outlook.
- [on 'Wiebo's War'] I was shooting in Alberta at the time of his trial, and my vivid memory was of this man who would come down and give these amazing impromptu sermons on the courthouse steps. I heard everything that was said Iabout him, you know - 'cult leader' and 'wildly dangerous' - stuff like that. What I didn't expect was that his family isn't cultlike at all. Wiebo is charismatic and influential, but there is wide and varied debate among the family. They engage very thoroughly with the world and with each other, in a way that is more open than in any situation I've ever witnessed.
- [on the oil and gas industry] It's such an elemental force that it has it's own momentum. I think my movie is about what happened when that irresistible force meets the immovable object.
