Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out. And if you're into box office and how movies might do, come play some of the box office games at EZ1 Productions including their new Pick 5 game!
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island won the weekend, and honestly, the Weekend Warrior’s original prediction of $61.6 million was pretty darn close to the movie’s opening weekend which ended up at $61 million. (Unfortunately, I chickened out on Thursday because my prediction was so much higher than all others and lowered it to $58 million, which was Still closer to than every other prediction last weekend.) Also, as expected (at least by me), Hugh Jackman’s Logan took a 2nd weekend tumble as has been the case with most X-Men movies,...

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

If you watch any war documentaries—you can feel the realism of the firefights and soldiers during conflicts. Now just add invading space aliens to a war.
Director Jabbar Raisani brought a sci-fi alien war on Earth in a documentary point of view in “Alien Outpost.” The film follows documentarians filming a group of soldiers defending a military outpost from aliens in the Middle East.

Eddie Yang (left), Fausto De Martini (center) and Vitaly Bulgarov (right) How did you get involved with Jose Padilha's RoboCop? Eddie Yang: Peter Oillataguerre at MGM, called us up for a meeting and to do some initial sketches to help with the writing of the script. I went and met with Jose Padilha and some of the producers, apparently, Jose’s idea for how Alex Murphy integrated with the suit was very complex and he wanted it illustrated to clarify what he was thinking. Along with that they wanted a few initial attempts at the suit. Conceptual design for me is a very exploratory process where you start with the director’s notes and then you collaborate with other artists and eventually narrow down a design. At the time RoboCop was pretty much an open field design-wise. The story was focused on the creation of RoboCop much like how...

Eddie Yang (left), Fausto De Martini (center) and Vitaly Bulgarov (right) How much pressure did you feel while redesigning the iconic RoboCop costume? Eddie Yang: At first it was fun and I never really thought about any pressure. I always thought they were going to bring in some other guys to help! I just kept waiting for them to show up! I feel the best designs come about when you have many talented people collaborating and pushing each other and on something as iconic as this I thought it would be a whole army of guys! When Vitaly and Fausto showed up, I thought this is awesome these guys are the shit! Fausto De Martini: Wow Eddie, that means a lot coming from you! I felt extremely honored to be involved in this project and when I heard I would be touching the classic design I was pretty blown away!

Eddie Yang's artwork has been showcased on our site numerous times, as his artistic capabilities have been used to help shape some of the biggest comic book movies in the past decade, such as Iron Man, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man. His talents were cultivated over the past few decades by working with make-up effects gurus, like Rick Baker and Stan Winston. This past year Eddie joined forces with, Steve Wang, a highly acclaimed artist that also worked with Academy Award winners Stan Winston and Rick Baker, as well as the legendary Dick Smith. Steve is perhaps best known for designing one of the most iconic creatures to grace the silver screen, "The Predator." You would also recognize his work from Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy, as he helped bring Abe Sapien to life. Today, I spoke with Eddie Yang about his and Steve's new company,...

There was plenty of discussion across the movie blogosphere following last week's announcement that Vertigo had dethroned Citizen Kane as the greatest film of all time according to Sight & Sound's decennial poll. In addition to revealing the top 50 as determined by critics, they also provided a top 10 based on a separate poll for directors only. In the print version of the magazine, they have taken it a step further by reprinting some of the individual top 10 lists from the filmmakers who participated, and we now have some of them here for your perusal. Among them, we have lists from legends like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Quentin Tarantino, but there are also some unexpected newcomers who took part including Richard Ayoade (Submarine), Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know) and Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene). Some of these lists aren't all that surprising (both Quentin Tarantino...

A concept artist often will come up with as many design variations as possible. Some tend to be rather traditional, while others are quite a departure from the norm. The talented Eddie Yang has provided us with three costume designs for The Amazing Spider-Man. These are more of the extreme variety as they provide splashy new versions of the chest logo, and a completely new imagining of Spidey's lenses. I suggest clicking on the images to enlarge them so that you can see all the detailed work that went into designing these costumes. Purists may not like it, but for thinking outside of the box I give Eddie Yang a thumbs up. The guys over at io9 have spotted some some great concept art for The Amazing Spider-Man, granting us the opportunity of delving deeper into the film’s visuals. The majority of the images were sent to them by concept artist George Hull (who also worked on the less amazing movie Battleship). Hull designed the exterior of the Oscorp Building and the interiors such as the area where Peter encounters the spider that forever changes his life as well the labs used by Curt Connors. The technical break down on his machinery is particularly eye catching. Hull also had a hand in conceptualizing the battle between Spidey and The Lizard atop the Oscorp for the film’s finale.

The Amazing Spider-Man is getting a lot of mixed reviews, people are loving it and hating it. I personally thought it was awesome! I really enjoyed the story and characters. It was a very well made film, and I'm excited for the sequels.
There's a collection of concept art for the film that has been released, some of which gives us some cool looking takes on Spider-Man's suit that obviously didn't end up in the film. I love being able to see what it could have been. These were created by Eddie Yang, and I think the designs are great! Check 'em out and tell us if you like them!
The other designs released include the OsCorp building, and the final showdown between Spidey and Lizard. All that art comes from George Hull, and if you go to his website he offers some behind the scenes details of the process...

With The Amazing Spider-Man now in theaters, some of the artists who worked on the film are beginning to share some very cool concept art on their personal websites. George Hull and Eddie Yang have worked on a number of big-budget films, including Battleship and Iron Man, and they've both revealed some interesting images recently. First up is Mr. Yang, who dropped a few concept sketches of Spider-Man without saying anything about them. io9, who rounded up a bunch of this art, have concluded that these images may, in fact, be early versions of what Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man was going to look like. Aside from him being completely ripped, we definitely dig these. Spider-Man looks like a total badass, perhaps a little too much of a badass for the final film. Also interesting...
