Mark Ruffalo Says Kenneth Lonergan Wanted Ethan Hawke for ‘You Can Count on Me’ Before He ‘Literally Begged’ Him for the Role
Mark Ruffalo
Mark Ruffalo’s breakout role in Kenneth Lonergan’s “You Can Count on Me” almost didn’t happen.

In a Monday interview with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett on their “Smartless” podcast, the “Poor Things” Oscar nominee recalled “literally begging” the celebrated playwright and filmmaker for the role of Terry in the 2000 feature – even though it was initially offered to Ethan Hawke.

Ruffalo had previously worked on Lonergan’s blockbuster Broadway production of “This Is Our Youth” in 1996 with costars Missy Yager and Josh Hamilton, so he had a leg to stand on when demanding an audition with Lonergan for his debut feature film.

Retelling the incident on “Smartless,” Ruffalo said that he was out to lunch in New York City with Lonergan when they ran into Ethan Hawke, who was apparently in the running for the lead role in “You Can Count on Me.” Ruffalo said it...

Matt Damon & Mark Ruffalo Help Raise Money for Historic Church, Perform in Stage Reading of 'This Is Our Youth' Play
Image
Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo share a laugh while performing on stage at The Center at West Park on Thursday (November 16) in New York City.

The two stars took part in a reading of the play This Is Our Youth, alongside Missy Yager, to help raise funds for the West Park Presbyterian Church building, which The Center is located in.

The event was held to raise money for the many repairs the historic church needs, and save it from being demolished to make way for a mixed-use development, which was the intent after church leaders agreed to sell it to a developer in 2022.

Other celebrities in attendance included Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Christian Slater and Fisher Stevens, as well as playwright Kenneth Lonergan, who wrote This Is Our Youth.

The hope of raising funds for the space is to purchase back the building and transform it into...

Funds raised will benefit the Center.

The event, honoring the Center’s Founding and Current Board President Mim Warden, will kick off the Center’s new Renowned American Playwrights Showcase, a series of readings of acclaimed stage works performed predominantly by their original casts. Exclusive Restoration Trailer: Joan Micklin Silver’s ‘A Fish in the Bathtub’ Starring Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara & Mark Ruffalo
New York City’s Quad Cinema has done a great service in spotlighting the oft-overlooked films of Joan Micklin Silver, screening Hester Street, Crossing Delancey, and Old Enough in various series since they’ve relaunched. With Cohen Film Collection, they also gave a run to a restored Between the Lines, and now another restoration from the director is opening next month.

Arriving on November 8 is Joan Micklin Silver’s rarely-screened New York City comedy A Fish in the Bathtub starring real-life couple Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, as well as Mark Ruffalo (a year before his break-out role in Kenneth Lonergan’s You Can Count On Me) and Jane Adams. Marking the director’s last theatrical release, the 1999 film follows the comedic duo as they quarrel over a new aquatic member of the family, and things spiral out of control from there.

“Eighth Grade” is an impressive filmmaking debut for Bo Burnham
It seems safe to assume that no one was expecting this out of comedian and actor turned filmmaker Bo Burnham. That’s nothing against him. It merely means that his first effort with crafting cinema is just that good. This week, Burnham makes his directing and writing debut with Eighth Grade, a coming of age story that should hit very close to home. This film works in a tremendously strong way. Depicting this seminal time in a teenager’s life is something many would struggle with. Not him, though. Burnham is more than up to the challenge, with the results speaking for themselves. This is something special. The movie, unsurprisingly, is about an eighth grader. Soon to be High Schooler Kayla (Elsie Fisher) is just trying to survive the end of her Middle School experience, one that has been a disaster almost from the start. Her dad Mark (Josh Hamilton...

Elsie Fisher Stars in First Trailer for Bo Burnham's Debut 'Eighth Grade'
"Okay, so growing up can be a little scary... and weird." A24 has revealed the first official trailer for Bo Burnham's first film Eighth Grade, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to quite a few rave reviews. The film stars young actress Elsie Fisher as an eighth grader teen dealing with issues of personality and identity as she finishes her last week in middle school. It's a fascinating portrait of modern youth and how mentally exhausting it is to go to public school. The cast includes Josh Hamilton as her dad, plus Emily Robinson, Missy Yager, Greg Crowe, Daniel Zolghadri, Jake Ryan, Imani Lewis, and Deborah Unger. This a really wonderful trailer for an excellent gem of a film, don't miss this. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade, direct from A24's YouTube: Bilge Ebiri's review at Sundance...

Stage Door: This is Our Youth
Here's Matthew Eng on a theatrical revival in NYC of interest to movie fans...

There’s always a bit of wariness involved when approaching our favorite artists’ earliest works, a back-of-the-brain hesitancy that carefully warns us to temper our expectations for these formative, often preliminary pieces. You know what I mean: those scrappily ambitious but almost inevitably uneven calling cards, the ones that were created pre-renown, even pre-agent. They were toiled over on the side, while dwelling in dubious “studio” apartments during stationary years spent wage-slaving in temp jobs, originally imagined while dawdling on a dorm mattress or in a childhood bedroom, when success was a foreign and totally faraway desire.

Success has surely been a much more familiar if nonetheless scattered concept for Kenneth Lonergan in the years since This is Our Youth broke out Off-Broadway in 1996, launching his own career on stage and screen, as well as those...

Anna Paquin is gearing up to welcome not one, but two babies this year, but that doesn't mean her schedule is slowing down too much.

The pregnant "True Blood" star and her HBO co-star and husband, Stephen Moyer, arrived at London's Heathrow Airport in London on July 19, with Paquin's growing baby bump on full display.

The pair announced in April that they were expanding their family, and it was later revealed that twins are on the way for the couple, who married in 2010.

The couple's co-star, Sam Trammell, knows a thing or two about twins, considering he and his girlfriend Missy Yager welcomed twin boys in August 2011.

"It's so interesting that 'True Blood' has become, like, the 'twins' show," Trammell told Us Weekly in June, adding that he's excited for Paquin and Moyer.

Duff McDonald: Sweet Hearts for Valentine's Day
Priscilla Ahn in Dancing with the Stars (2005)
Looking for a soundtrack to your amorous endeavors this Valentine's Day and beyond? Look no further than ohsweethearts.com, where individually accomplished, L.A.-based songwriters Priscilla Ahn and Charlie Wadhams, recording under the name Sweet Hearts, have teamed up to deliver a free, five-song gift to lovers everywhere.

Ahn, who has recently released two albums for Blue Note (When You Grow Up and A Good Day) has a warm, welcoming voice, and Wadhams, whose songwriting was featured in Walk Hard, is no vocal slouch either. (He co-wrote "Let's Duet," one of the funniest things in the movie.) Together, they sound like Belle & Sebastian -- minus the twee.

Ahn and Wadhams met when he was brought in to sing background vocals on When You Grow Up, and their connection was cemented when they co-wrote "I Don't Have Time To Be in Love" for that record. The song was meant to be a duet,...

Alexander Skarsgard Heats Up NYC Between Stints on the What Maisie Knew Set
Anna Paquin, Ryan Kwanten, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, and Rutina Wesley in True Blood (2008)
Alexander Skarsgard treated the ladies of NYC to the hot sight of him returning to his hotel from lunch at Cafe Habana yesterday. The good-looking True Blood star is hanging out in the Big Apple doing press for his next big-screen endeavor, Straw Dogs. He's got a head start on the morning-show rounds, hitting Regis and Kelly last week. Things could get a little awkward for Alex, since he'll promote the movie alongside his ex-girlfriend. Since announcing their split a few weeks ago, Kate Bosworth moved on with director Michael Polish. There's another cinematic connection for Kate and Michael, since he was the director of another of her films called Big Sur. Alex's time on the West Coast coincides with the start of production on his new movie What Maisie Knew with Julianne Moore. He may get into contact with one of his small-screen buddies soon, though, to offer congratulations.

My Own Worst Enemy: Watch the Last Episode of the Christian Slater TV Show
NBC has certainly had some problems attracting viewers. One of their biggest trouble spots has been Monday nights at 10pm. Great shows like Journeyman, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and The Black Donnellys have all tried and failed. My Own Worst Enemy hasn't done any better.

My Own Worst Enemy centers around Henry Spivey (Christian Slater), an everyday businessman with a wife (Madchen Amick) and two kids (Taylor Lautner, and Bella Thorne). Unbeknown to even himself, Henry has another identity as an operative and trained killer named Edward Albright.

In this second persona, he works for a secret spy organization under the supervision of Mavis Heller (Alfre Woodard). He's frequently partnered with Tom Grady/Raymond Carter (Mike O'Malley). Other performers include Omid Abtahi, Saffron Burrows, James Cromwell, Sarai Givaty, Mark Ivanir, Mindy Sterling, Missy Yager, Eugenia Yuan, and Louis Giambalvo.

The show debuted on October 13, 2008 on NBC and attracted a...

My Own Worst Enemy: Co-Star Tries to Understand TV Show Cancellation
The NBC TV show that brought Christian Slater to weekly television was cancelled after just four weeks on the air. Production shut down after nine episodes and NBC plans to air them all. One of the series' stars, Madchen Amick, is confused by the decision to cancel the show but has a theory about why it happened.

My Own Worst Enemy is an action drama follows a man (Slater) with two distinct identities -- Henry Spivey and Edward Albright. Henry, his wife (Amick), and children (Taylor Lautner, and Bella Thorne) all believe that he's a mild-mannered family man. Meanwhile, Edward is a super spy who works under supervisor Mavis Heller (Alfre Woodard) and is partnered with fellow operative Raymond Carter (Mike O'Malley). Others in the cast include Omid Abtahi, Saffron Burrows, James Cromwell, Sarai Givaty, Mark Ivanir, Mindy Sterling, Missy Yager, Eugenia Yuan, and Louis Giambalvo.

Despite a lot of high-profile promotion,...
