Sanya Malhotra’s latest movie, Kathal, co-produced by Guneet Monga Kapoor’s Sikhya Entertainment and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, is one of the very few movies with an intentionally absurd storyline. It is a satirical comedy about a local politician whose prized jackfruits go missing and a young police officer who is adamant to solve this bizarre case to prove herself.
The story is inspired by similar real-life incidents that have happened in the past, like an official almost draining an entire dam to retrieve a phone accidentally dropped by the owner while trying to take a selfie, or an Ias Officer that cut practice sessions at a Delhi stadium short so that he could walk his dog.
As absurd as the story might sound to many, the cast and crew vouch that Kathal is not very far from reality.

Tyagi sir, a biology teacher close to retirement, arrives home, his nose and mouth covered by a handkerchief. He quickly washes his hands, and tells his wife that it’s no longer safe to be outside. Over dinner, as his family talks about an outing, he insists that no one will go anywhere. The next day is the beginning of a lockdown. As in many places, education moves online, and Master Ji will have to learn how to cope with the very different challenges online learning places on both students and teacher.

Chehre
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Emraan Hashmi, Annu Kapoor, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Raghuveer Yadav, Rhea Chakraborty, Crystal d’Souza
Directed by Rumi Jaffrey
A snow blizzard drives the wizard of awe far beyond the precincts of the plot, into a tirade against all atrocities and crimes committed against women. He speaks about Nirbhaya and acid attacks, women being made to relive the trauma of rape each time they attend a court hearing. He speaks. Everyone on the screen and in the audience, listens.
“There is no nyay only faisla,” the Bachchan baritone boomed across the big screen as I sat listening and watching, wondering, are there no fulltops to this actor’s aspirations?
Chehre is a chamber-piece which echoes Agatha Christie’s 12 Little Indians and Basu Chatterjee’s Ek Ruka Hua Faisla in that the concept of justice is discussed within the confines of the four walls.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar
Starring Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra
Director Dibakar Bannerjee
After a really shaky prologue—the film begins with a bunch of louts in a moving car crackling over sexist jokes about women wearing lipstick, obviously shot in a studio with clumsy back projection—Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar gathers its wits midway, to deliver a last 45 minutes which are most effective, though not brilliant.
This is the problem with Dibakar Bannerjee’s long-delayed homespun Bonnie & Clyde. It means well, but it falls short of expectations, perhaps its own expectations more than ours. The writing by Bannerjee and the redoubtable Varun Grover is sinewy muscular and adventurous. Pitching two warring co-travellers in a journey away from trouble is nothing new. The treatment of the weatherworn subject is sometimes surprising, at other times plain exasperating.

OTTWhen he finds no other jobs, Abhishek takes up a government job as the secretary of a village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh.Saraswati DatarPanchayat’s one-line premise; a lone urban man in an unfamiliar rural surrounding is pretty much the gist of English August by Upamanyu Chatterjee that had its uninterested public servant Agastya Sen struggle in his post as a civil servant in rural India. But perhaps since Panchayat, now streaming on Amazon Prime, is created by The Viral Fever (Tvf), it tells a similar story, but replaces substance abuse and masturbation with humour and pathos in equal doses. When he finds no other jobs and just sitting at home is too shameful, Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) takes up a government job as the secretary or Sachiv as the villagers call him, of the Phullera village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh. The salary is meagre, and the vagaries of village life are overwhelming.

The 2011 Cricket World Cup was a completion of a lot of dreams for a lot of people. The Indian supporters got to see their team lift the trophy on home soil, the players got to lift their ‘god’ Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders and in the background was the fictional simmering story of The Zoya Factor. Based on the book by Anuja Chauhan, Sonam Kapoor (advertising agent Zoya Singh Solanki) becomes the love interest of Dulqeer Salman (playing as Indian team captain Nikhil Khoda) and in doing so provides the luck that completes the preparation of a finely-honed team.

The Chhattisgarh region of central India is rich in mineral resources, but its people live in poverty, eking out a living amongst the fighting that has gone on for close to three decades, with many of them uprooted from traditionally held tribal land. These people end up caught between the government and the Maoist rebels, and it’s this tension that serves as the backdrop to Amit V. Masurkar’s finely chiseled film, Newton. In the world’s largest democracy, free and fair elections are seen as the way to counter Maoist opposition, and the key to free and fair elections is the voting machine.

The stories of Saadat Hassan Manto are not pretty evening-time entertainment to be ingested with a glass of ‘read’ wine. They are gut-wrenching nauseating, stomach-churning renditions of a time when India was split into two.
So were human skulls and while many fled to the new country nextdoor, a lot of legs were forcibly parted by marauders masquerading as political vigilantes. Yes, rape is not pretty and when a young gangraped girl responds to the simple request ‘Khol de’ by reflexively loosening her salwaar we know the times that this film takes us back to must never be visited again.
This cinematic visit to those troubled times serves up a telling warning.

When debutant director Rajat Kazmi submitted his hard-hitting treatise on the unrest in the Kashmir Valley for censoring, he expected plenty of trouble over the volatile subject and candid dialogues about the State of siege. Instead he was told that the film would have to be viewed by a Muslim individual to ensure the religious references were current.
Kazmi who is a Kashmiri Muslim found the precondition strange. "I knew what I was talking about in Identity Card. The issue of Kashmiri militancy and how brutally it affects local Kashmiri civilians is very close to my heart. So when after the censor panel viewed my film I was told it would have to be viewed by a Muslim, I was confused."
Finally though, Kazmi whose gripping film releases this week heaved a sigh of relief, as only two cuts were ordered and the film was passed with a 'UA' certification.

Actor Prashantt Guptha (formerly known as Prashaant Kumar) was last seen as the anti-hero in Jayantilal Gada and Shailesh Singh’s Hindi adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, Issaq. Though the film didn’t fare as well as the other Hit adaptation that followed, Ram-Leela, quite a few in the industry took note of this newcomer’s performance. Much to the amusement of many a viewers was the fact that this young actor, who was born and raised in New York and otherwise maintains the ‘chocolate-boy next door’ kind of look, could mould himself flawlessly into a hardcore grey-shaded Banarasi cop. Post Issaq, he bagged two films in a principal role, Identity Card and 6-5=2.

Out Of The Furnace (15)
(Scott Cooper, 2013, Us) Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker. 117 mins
Brotherly solidarity, blue-collar violence, pain and grit in a decaying Rust Belt town: this could be a feature-length Bruce Springsteen song. At heart, the story doesn't stretch much further: decent steelworker Bale steps up after his Iraq-vet brother (Affleck) strays too far into outlaw territory, Winter's Bone-style (Harrelson is a great scary baddie). But it's skilfully told and the acting is persuasively raw. Between the cliches, Cooper finds space to give us a tough, textured study of American masculinity in crisis.
Lone Survivor (15)
(Peter Berg, 2013, Us) Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch. 121 mins

Film: "Club 60"; Cast: Farooque Sheikh, Sarika, Raghubir Yadav, Satish Shah, Tinu Anand, Sharad Saxenaa and Vineet Kumar; Writer-Director: Sanjay Tripathi; Rating: **** - brings feelings back into movies.
When was the last time a movie moved you anywhere except out of the theatre in a hurry to get home? "Club 60" is that modern day rarity that brings the soul back to our cinema.
A story of aging and despair dappled by dashes of warmth and humour, "Club 60" is embellished with endearing imperfections - jaunty editing which only adds to its humane appeal. The film has so much love and warmth to give, it breaks your heart to.
