Chicago – One of the most popular opinions among modern audiences is the notion that television shows have become consistently better than films. This is partly because many of the year’s best movies are relegated to urban art houses, while shows like “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” are available on small screens nationwide. Yet I’d argue that there’s just as much derivative dreck on TV as there is in mainstream multiplexes.
Two recent shows on Starz illustrate this principal in exquisite fashion. Both “Camelot” and “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” are the latest rehashes of ancient tales that have nothing new to bring to the table, besides a smattering of gore and nudity to better portray the “reality” of their oft-romanticized subject matter (while simultaneously boosting ratings). Neither show emerges as anything more than an inferior imitation of past hit films. One show is a complete rip-off, while the other registers as HBO-lite.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Season 1, Ep. 6 – entitled The Bitter End – was probably the best episode drama-wise of the prequel mini-series. It also houses the longest and one of most well-executed fight scenes out of any Spartacus episode thus far. The fight also housed some surprises that the avid viewer will not see coming.
Gone are the over-the-top sexual exploits and in their place stronger story arcs and plotline resolutions.
All questions are answered about what happened to key characters in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena that do not appear in Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Tullius (Stephen Lovat)’ end was pretty creative as was the scheme that surrounded his retainer Vettius. The betrayal of Solonius (Craig Walsh Wrightson) on Batiatus (John Hannah) was unforeseen and a welcome surprise. Batiatus had been belittling Solonius since the beginning of the Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, similar to the way Lucretia was treated...

"Spartacus" is not a good show, by any stretch of the imagination. The quality of writing is embarrassing, a preteen with access to Seneca and Aeschylus and the opportunity to use potty words. Honestly, see if you can go four minutes on the show without being hit in the head with a blatant profanity. If there's a chance to use a filthy word, by Jupiter's cock, they'll find a way to fit it in there. The digital effects are shameful. It looks like it was put together on a Commodore 64. It is the stupidest, dumbass slab of meat ever to cross a television screen.
And that's what makes it a fucking blast to watch.
"Spartacus" is self-aware of its' stupidity. It's proud of it. It's a wine-jug crushed on the forehead like a fratparty beercan. It's a swinging dick tea-bagged into the face of the nerdly prospect gladiator it just swirlied in the communal baths.

Ah Good Solonius, we hardly knew ye. Our patrician ludus operator and major thorn in Batiatus' (John Hannah) side is a true Roman elitist, all the way to the end of his life. This coming Friday, as Batiatus' reign of power-mad moves makes him a lethal foe, we find Solonius (Craig Walsh Wrightson) caged and taunted, but not beaten down that he cannot face Spartacus as a man. On Ep 112 "Revelations", we will see Batiatus gloat over Solonius. Gloating is something he does very well. Pride before the fall. Will you miss Solonius? Friday, 4/9 at 10pm et/pt on Starz. Ep 112 Revelations Glaber intends to test Spartacus with unfair odds. Friday, 4/9 at 10pm...

Gather up ye Romans and lovers of all things bloody and brutal, as Starz "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" heads into the sixth episode of season one. The rise of Spartacus (Andy Whitfield), once seemingly unheard of, is grating to Ilithyia (Viva Bianca) and Lucretia's (Lucy Lawless) nerves, who have nothing but utter disdain and loathing for him. It's purely business for Batiatus (John Hannah), eaten up with envy at his nemesis Solonius' (Craig Walsh Wrightson) higher social ranking in Rome's patrician family pecking order, and last week we saw him package Crixus and Spartacus, his top two men, together for a lucrative fight to the death against Solonius' man Theokoles, aka the Shadow of Death. As you...
