- Played in The Allman Brothers Band from June 1989 to March, 1997. Along with Warren Haynes, he played a huge role in giving life to the reformed band.

He also wrote songs for Government Mule and The Allman Brothers Band.
- After his death on 26 August 2000, a tribute concert called One For Woody was put on at the Roseland Ballroom, New York City. The concert, held on September 21, 2000, featured Phil Lesh & Friends, The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers Band and the remaining Government Mule. Guests included Little Milton, Edwin McCain, Darius Rucker (of Hootie & the Blowfish), Hank Herrera, Johnny Neal, Dave Schools (of Widespread Panic), Merl Saunders, Artimus Pyle (formerly of Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Leslie West (Mountain), and others. The show raised money for the education of Woody's daughter, Savannah.
