The James Bond Franchise Has a Major Problem And Its Time for It To Die
Image
If the James Bond films have proven anything, it's that they are impervious to change until they have to. For example, sexist, double entendre Bond girl names like Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman), Holly Goodhead (Lois Chiles), and Plenty O'Toole, died after Dr. Christmas Jones (Denise Richards) in The World is Not Enough, with the series at last acknowledging that the time had long passed for the names to go. But one tenacious trend that continues to plague the franchise, right up to Daniel Craig's final act in No Time to Die, is the antagonist with a defining physical trait that's meant to contribute to their intimidation. You know. Eye patches. Prosthetic metal hands. Metallic teeth. An eye that weeps blood. And scars. So many scars of all shapes and sizes, some even diamond-encrusted. The trope is so familiar that Mike Myers' spot-on spoof of the Bond films, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,...

The Searchers Ending Explained: Wandering Forever Between The Winds
Image
John Wayne starred in dozens of Westerns during his lengthy career, but he very rarely played the bad guy. One of his darkest roles came in "The Searchers," his 14th and greatest collaboration with John Ford, the director who helped the Hollywood icon make his name in "Stagecoach." It was a film that inverted Wayne's heroic screen persona by casting him as Ethan Edwards, a bitterly racist former soldier who spends many years on an obsessive quest to track down his niece after she is abducted by Comanches.

For a director-star combo that had often portrayed Native Americans as a faceless marauding horde in many of their earlier pictures, "The Searchers" is a soulful and sometimes awkward attempt to reckon with that past and, in turn, America's legacy of genocide and Manifest Destiny. While its comedic moments seem to belong to another film and its use of Redface is cringe-inducing,...

The Original Ending Of Diamonds Are Forever Was A Little Too 'S&m' For British Censors
Image
When Sean Connery returned to the James Bond films after skipping out on "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (which is a great movie but seen as lesser at the time), anticipation was high. In 1971, Connery was Bond. George Lazenby was some pretender. There wasn't a tradition of handing over the character to a new actor yet. This was his grand return, and the film's creatives needed to get it right. They even brought back "Goldfinger" director Guy Hamilton to call the shots.

On a financial level, everyone was happy. "Diamonds Are Forever" was the third-highest grossing film at the domestic box office in 1971. On an artistic level ... it's one of the worst films in the series. Connery is clearly only in it for the paycheck, the story is weirdly low-stakes and silly, and the Las Vegas setting feels chintzy.

The film does have two major bright spots though. First, there's...

Joan Collins Says She Was Drugged and Date-Raped by Her First Husband
Joan Collins
Joan Collins spoke out for the first time about abuse she says she suffered at the hands of her first husband, Maxwell Reed, including being raped on their first date.

The 88-year-old British actress discussed the alleged assault in a BBC documentary that aired on Saturday night in the U.K., saying that Reed spiked her drink while she visited his home. Collins was just 17 at the time; Reed was 31.

“The next thing I knew I was flat out on the sofa and he was raping me. In those days, my mother would have said I was taken advantage of,” Collins said. “Now, we call it date rape.”

17 Best Celebrity Memoirs Worth Reading: Lana Wood, Carrie Fisher, and More
Image

Celebrity memoirs are plentiful, but they aren’t always good. Just because an actor lived through a particularly salacious event doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll reveal any details about what occurred — though it’s always fun when they do. The best movie star memoirs don’t even have to contain much gossip — often, the most entertaining books are the ones that simply shed light on a star’s experiences and an outlook that we’d never get from even the best journalistic profiles.

Now that fall has arrived and winter’s right around the corner, it’s a great time to get your reading list together. That’s why we put together...

Natalie Wood Was Sexually Assaulted by Kirk Douglas, Her Sister Alleges
Image
In a memoir being released on Tuesday called “Little Sister,” Lana Wood, Natalie Wood’s sister, writes that Kirk Douglas sexually assaulted Natalie when she was a teenager, according to a report in the Associated Press. The alleged assault took place in 1955 after Lana and their mother, Maria Zakharenko, dropped Natalie off at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles to meet with Douglas.

Kirk Douglas died in February 2020 at age 103.

His son Michael did not respond to Variety’s request for comment. But to the AP, Michael Douglas’ publicist issued a statement: “May they both rest in peace.”

Variety has not yet obtained a copy of “Little Sister.”

Quoting from the memoir, the AP wrote that Natalie said to Lana, “And, uh … he hurt me Lana.” Lana writes in “Little Sister” that the situation ” was like an out-of-body experience. I was terrified, I was confused.” According to the book, their...

An Appreciation: Sean Connery Defined in Two Quotes
Image
Chicago – Sean Connery, who began a sensation when he first introduced himself as “Bond, James Bond” in his role as the spy in “Dr No” (1962) – and was able to redefine himself as a character actor after 10 years as Bond – passed away on October 31st, 2020, at his home in the Bahamas.

Born in Scotland to working class parents, Thomas Sean Connery worked his way up the show business ladder to the giddiest of heights, even winning a Best Supporting Oscar for his role in “The Untouchables” (1987). In his choice of roles, especially post-Bond, he was unpredictable and provocative, while staying humble to where he came from … Connery was a lifelong advocate for Scottish independence from England.

Natalie Wood’s Sister Says She Thinks Robert Wagner Killed Her
Natalie Wood
Thirty-seven years after the mysterious drowning death of Natalie Wood, her sister Lana Wood says she thinks Robert Wagner killed the actress.

“I know exactly what happened from what Dennis [the boat’s skipper] has told me,” Lana Wood told on Megyn Kelly on Wednesday morning.

“They had a fight, they had a bad fight, Dennis said it sounded like furniture was being thrown around and he knocked on the door, Rj [Wagner] opened it a little bit, said ‘mind your own business,’ so Dennis then left,” Lana continued while a guest on “Megyn Kelly Today.”

It has all the elements of a big-screen blockbuster — a beautiful actress, a handsome leading man, a brooding fifth wheel and a moment of sickening terror with the most horrific consequences. Robert Wagner Named Person of Interest in Natalie Wood's Death
Natalie Wood
Brainstorm probably wouldn't have gotten a release if the circumstances surrounding the film had of happened today. Its leading lady was found dead, and one of her co-stars was the last to see her alive. The movie marked the end of a career for iconic actress Natalie Wood. And it was released a short time after her untimely passing, once her death had been deemed an accident. But the case was reopened seven years ago. And now, Wood's then husband is officially a 'person of interest' in her possible murder.

Natalie Wood's drowning has always gone unexplained. But Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators are telling 48 Hours that Robert Wagner has become a 'person of interest' some four decades later. Wood was found dead in 1981, after disappearing from her family's yacht. A full interview delving into her disappearance and death is scheduled to be broadcast on CBS this Saturday, February 3 at 10 pm.

The James Bond movies' special relationship with America
Mark Harrison Sep 19, 2017

Kingsman pulls the leg of the James Bond series - but how have the 007 films put across the relationship between Britain and the USA?

When Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service exploded into cinemas in 2015, it gave the iconic James Bond franchise much the same irreverent treatment that the director's previous Mark Millar adaptation, Kick-Ass, gave to comic book movies. Reviews focused on how the film recontextualised the familiar 007 tropes of guns, girls and gadgets through the lens of class, identity and that notorious final bum note.

In the sequel, Eggsy and the Kingsmen run up against a crime syndicate known as the Golden Circle with a little help from their American cousins, the Statesmen. It neatly shows us that American iconography plays much the same role for their opposite numbers, that liquor-themed codenames will stand in for Arthurian monikers, and most accurately of all, that...

Marjorie Morningstar
The most-read book since Gone with the Wind looked at the coming of age struggle of an ambitious, upwardly mobile Jewish girl in the 1930s. This glossy film version gives Natalie Wood an ‘adult’ role and provides Gene Kelly with the seemingly optimal character of a troubled theatrical artiste. Good intentions aside, the show lacks guidance — and may have harmed Kelly’s acting career.

Best and Worst of the James Bond Movies
I'm not writing this as some kind of definitive list, but more in response to The Playlist's ranking of what writer Oliver Lyttelton considers to be the five worst James Bond film. His list includes Diamonds are Forever (1971), Moonraker (1979) disagree, Licence To Kill (1989), Die Another Day (2002) and Quantum of Solace (2008). Of course, like all lists these are someone else's opinion and pretending one's opinion is "right" over someone else's is preposterous, but Lyttleton's list made for a good starting point. Of the films on his list, Diamonds are Forever and Die Another Day are spot on. The only real redeeming factor in Diamonds is Lana Wood as Plenty O'Toole and I will admit to liking Rick Yune's face scarred with diamonds in Die Another Day, but otherwise it is a disaster. I will say Moonraker is probably the closest of his remaining three films to making my list of...

Diabolical Dr Savior revealed in horror film Donors starring DJ Perry and Bond girl Lana Wood
With a mask somewhat reminiscent of Rorschach from Watchmen or Kroenen from Hellboy, the mysterious Dr Savior has been unveiled in upcoming horror film Donors.

Behind the mask of the "diabolical" doctor (above) is genre actor/producer DJ Perry. Earlier this year, we brought you the first teaser poster and some cast pictures featuring Perry alongside co-stars French/Philippine beauty Anne Gauthier and former Bond girl Lana Wood (famous for her role as Plenty O'Toole in 1971's Diamonds Are Forever starring Sean Connery), who is playing a character called Norma.

Paisaen Productions in association with Collective Development Inc has today announced that the Charles Pisaeno-directed horror thriller has moved into post-production sound and scoring.

The film, also written by Pisaeno, is about a troubled young woman (Niki Saletta, pictured below) abducted by a mysterious man known as Doctor Savior (DJ Perry).

In desperation the woman seeks to get help...

Unmasking a Killer in Deadly Renovations: A Movie Review
Full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Midnight Releasing. Director: Robert H. Gwinn. Writer: Charles Pisaeno. Cast: DJ Perry, Terence Knox, Johnny Dark and Lana Wood. Tagline: "It's All in the Plans." Deadly Renovations was initially titled the simpler Renovations. It has been given a name change, perhaps, to make it sound more dangerous. The film does host a dangerous killer who seeks 2 million dollars of stolen cash from the Hotel del Sol. To release on DVD August 21 through Midnight Releasing, Deadly Renovations is an indie thriller with some adequate tension during the finale. You will just need to be patient to get there. The film begins with several friends and a new project. They hope to renovate the Hotel del Sol and flip it for profit. Unfortunately for them, there are a group of thieves working in the darkness. The thieves want to find...
