We don't usually dedicate entire posts to individual Blu-ray releases, but since we're talking about Citizen Kane, an exception is due. Often cited as one of the greatest American films ever made, Citizen Kane celebrates its 70th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion Warner Home Video is hard at work on transferring the film to the HD format. For the source of this latest edition, Warners have gone back to an original 1941 nitrate for a high definition restoration in 4K resolution. In addition to the film, there will be a load of extras, including a new 48-page book complete with "a 20-page reproduction of the original 1941 souvenir program, lobby cards plus facsimiles of memos and correspondence made during the movie's production." Much as previous generations believe you can tell everything about a person whether or not they love The Beatles or Elvis, you can tell a lot about a film fan depending on their opinions of Citizen Kane. The film is like a lightning rod in the movie blogosphere where you've either seen it and love it, respect it, hate it because it's been built up too much or don't even care to watch it. No matter which statement best describes you, there's no denying that Orson Welles' 1941 masterpiece set out what it was meant to do: spawn discussion, debate, and show film lovers everywhere just what this little medium we call movies is capable of. Now, 70 years after Kane was released in theaters, Warner Bros. is doing a frame by frame high definition restoration so they can release the film on Blu-ray September 13. If your aging VHS copy of Citizen Kane is nearing the end of its very long life, have no fear. According to THR, Warner Home Video is swooping in to the rescue with a Blu-Ray restoration of what is widely considered the best piece of American film making, ever. The masterpiece is fast approaching its 70th birthday and to commemorate the occasion, Warner is going through what can only be described as a pant-load of trouble to make sure fans and movie lovers get a copy of the film at the highest fidelity currently possible. Janet Wilson, a Motion Picture Imaging colorist at WB working on the process said that the operation was .a painstaking, frame-by-frame. undertaking.
