Does your memory go as far back as 2010, or have too many catastrophes and cataclysms blurred your vision? Peter Berg’s tense account of the Bp Gulf Oil Spill debacle covers twenty hours of technological peril, as Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell battle idiotic executives and a badly-cemented oil well that’s fixing to blow sky high — and to turn a massive floating oil rig into a hellish inferno.

The new cowboy doesn't arrive on horseback, and if he wears a hat, it's probably part of an official uniform. He might tote a gun, but he doesn't always need one to defend himself. He's no superhero – just a guy with an unshakable dedication to his job. He is many men, but this week, he's Mark Wahlberg and he's here to save the Gulf of Mexico.

Hard to believe it’s been five years since America’s worst environmental disaster, the Deepwater Horizon explosion, which claimed 11 lives and allowed 50,000 barrels of oil per day to spew from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico for 87 heartbreaking days until the well was finally capped. Since then the world has moved on and the event remains relevant only for those who lived through it. Director Peter Berg’s riveting new film “Deepwater Horizon”, should snap people back to attention.
“Deepwater Horizon” is told through the eyes of blue-collar worker, Chief Electrician Mike Williams, played by Mark Wahlberg, who leaves his loving wife (Kate Hudson) and arrives on the massive rig, 41 miles off the Louisiana coast. Costing $500,000 a day to run, the rig is weeks behind schedule – which means a team of Bp managers led by a creepy John Malkovitch is breathing down the crew’s thick necks.

Deepwater Horizon, Peter Berg‘s film about the 2010 Bp oil spill, is premiering in theaters this weekend to largely positive reviews. Deepwater Horizon stars Mark Wahlberg as chief electronics technician Mike Williams on the Deepwater Horizon Bp oil rig. It's been six years since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, but for survivor Mike Williams, the memory is still fresh. "It haunts me," Williams tells People. "I'm still not completely over it." After the disaster struck in April 2010, Williams, who worked as the Chief Electronics Technician on the oil rig, quickly became one of the voices of the tragedy. Williams was one of the last workers to leave the rig, bypassing lifeboats in order to help save the lives of others still trapped. His dramatic story and moments of extreme bravery in the face...

I always like when an actor hooks up with the right filmmaker. Often, it can lead to great things. For Mark Wahlberg, teaming up with director Peter Berg a few years ago led to a fantastic film in Lone Survivor. Later this week, they pair up again for Deepwater Horizon, a movie that could well be of some note. Later on this year, they’ll be together again for a more overt awards player in Patriot’s Day, but that’s for another day. Tomorrow, we get their take on the famous oil spill tragedy, focusing on some of the heroism that went down on that day. It could be in line to become an under the radar hit, so watch out. The film is a look at the disaster in April of 2010 on an offshore oil rig. Called the Deepwater Horizon, as you might imagine, the rig would explode...

One of America’s most traumatic disasters is being brought to Cineplex theatres, as director Peter Berg tells the true story about America’s largest oil spill in history with his new film Deepwater Horizon.
Mark Wahlberg stars as Mike Williams, a dedicated oil rig worker and family man who is trapped in the middle of a traumatic event when an oil rig explodes, taking the lives of many workers. It is a heart-wrenching story about a man trying to stay alive for his wife and daughter, promising to leave you on the edge of your seat.
We sat down with Wahlberg to get his thoughts on the set, his character, and why he feels the pressure to nail this life-changing performance.

A salute is in order for Peter Berg – the man can direct a disaster movie like nobody's business. What strengthens Deepwater Horizon and raises the bar on the possibilities of the genre is that the story he tells is honestly and horrifyingly true. The film depicts the worst oil spill in American history when the Bp-leased deepwater drilling rig, owned by Transocean, exploded on April 20, 2010, some 35 miles off the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico. Amid the spray of mud, oil and environmental calamity, 11 lives were lost. Berg creates...

This week’s biggest film release in the Us is Deepwater Horizon – a film that, despite its title, is neither an underwater sequel to Event Horizon nor a delicate coming-of-age story about waifish teens growing up in rural Sweden. It’s the very real, very tragic tale of the 2010 oil rig explosion that killed 11 people and caused an environmentally catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Mark Wahlberg stars as Mike Williams, the chief electrician aboard the Deepwater Horizon and the man tasked with saving as many of its occupants as possible. The film is the latest in a parade of gritty, true stories hitting cinemas as we stumble into the fall awards season.

Mark Wahlberg reunites with his Lone Survivor director Peter Berg for Deepwater Horizon, a film centred around the oil rig tragedy of 2010. It’s a strong film, all the better for finding the parts of the story that weren’t screened on 24 hour news channels worldwide.
Wahlberg stars in and produces the film. And he spared us some time to talk about it…
The construct of this film reminded me a little of the first Alien, in that it spends so much time setting up characters, introducing us to their trivialities and bits of their life, so that when bad things happen, you’re far more invested in them.

Kate Hudson is starring alongside her stepdad Kurt Russell in Deepwater Horizon. And while the two have worked together before (she directed him in her 2007 short film Cutlass), Hudson said this experience reminded her of how she'd grown up visiting Russell and mom Goldie Hawn on set - and how that inspired her to make movies in the first place. "That was cool," Hudson told Good Morning America on Wednesday, looking back on working with Russell. "What I really, really loved about being on set with him was it was a reminder of where I fell in love with making movies.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig stationed off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico caught on fire, leading to one of the worst ecological disasters and oil spills in U.S. waters. 11 men died during the fire, but a lot more survived as they tried to stop the spill before being evacuated.
Following their collaboration on 2013’s Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg and director Pete Berg have re-teamed for Deepwater Horizon, a recreation of the hours leading up to the fire and how engineer Mike Williams (played by Wahlberg) made sure that as much of his crew got off the rig safely as he could. Besides being an amazing recreation of the actual fire, the film also deals with some of the reasons why things might have gone wrong as Williams and the rig’s offshore installation manager “Mr. Jimmy” Harrell (Kurt Russell) butt heads with visiting Bp execs.

I’ve often thought that more filmmakers should sit and properly watch the first half of Alien. Ridley Scott’s masterpiece is rightly lauded for its tension, for its outstanding production design, and for its ability to genuinely creep under your skin. But one of the key reasons, for me, that it feels so special is that it does so much quality foundation work with its characters. That an extraordinary situation is made to feel ordinary, by a bunch of people moaning and grumbling about everyday things, rather than talking in philosophic soliloquies, as too many modern characters seem to do.

Immensely intense and suspenseful. Disaster filmmaking at its most gripping, yet there is nothing in the least bit exploitive or sensationalized about it. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Wait, what? “Based on a true story of real life heroes”? Wasn’t the Deepwater Horizon that total cluster-you-know-what of incompetence and corporate greed that killed 11 people and spilled an ungodly amount of oil all over the Gulf of Mexico, oil that is still killing seabirds and fish and cute baby dolphins to this day, six years later? Yes, it is. But this is not that story, at least not anymore than it can make some Bp executives look wolfish and blundering (which they well deserve). This movie doesn’t even get into the oil...

There is very little messing around in Peter Berg’s dramatisation of the 2010 Bp Oil Spill on the titular Deepwater Horizon oilrig. This is a restrained, no frills disaster movie, devoid of the over-stylisation, sickening melodrama and narrative absurdity that so often characterises the genre. Berg’s film makes a very angry, very direct point, targeting the greed of the company men that led to the biggest oil spill in history. As with any disaster movie, the narrative setup is fairly formulaic. We are given brief glimpses of the lead players’ lives before they head off to board the Deepwater Horizon. Mark Wahlberg plays Mike Williams, a lead engineer onboard the rig. Together with his wife (Kate Hudson), Williams helps his daughter with a school project about his job. While the scene is loaded with a little too much pre-disaster happy-family cheese, this exchange expertly provides some much need scientific...

There are entire corporations built on the depiction of superheroes in film – larger than life characters fighting for truth and justice, and defeating the villains. Depictions of more realistic versions of these types of stories are less frequent – but even more powerful. Their impact is based firmly in the knowledge that these characters we are watching on screen are (or were) real people, with hopes, dreams, and families of their own.
They are relatable individuals often caught up in circumstances that require them to rise to a challenge, and tackle a serious problem head-on. It may be dangerous, it may be difficult, but it is always life-changing – for themselves, and for others. The fall season is traditionally the time of true heroes in film – not least because it is also awards season, and Oscar loves a good biopic. The 2010 oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico was a disaster beyond belief, not only causing the deaths of workers, but ecologically setting our planet back with the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. Many still haven’t fully grasped what it must have been like to be on the ship at the time of the tragedy. Enter a Lone Survivor reunion for Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg with Deepwater Horizon, a well-made attempt at revisiting the tragedy, giving an action-oriented cinematic face to what actually happened on that fateful day.
Wahlberg plays Mike Williams and Kurt Russell is Jimmy Harrell, a pair of frontmen whose job is ensuring their workers are safe. But money talks: their boss is Jimmy Vidrine (an excellent John Malkovich), a man who always asks for the bottom line and puts safety second, until it comes back to bite him in the behind.

Deepwater Horizon is a viciously intense disaster film engulfed by the flames of greed and ego – and actual, physical flames. Despite already knowing the film’s infamous outcome, director Peter Berg still manages to deliver a tragic, exciting retelling of the worst oil crisis in Us history. This is no action film – Berg does well to highlight every ill-advised instruction and heroic showing of humanity, focusing solely on survival. Scene after scene, we can only sit and shake our heads as inevitability inches closer, enraged by the honest depiction of corporate stupidity shown by every Bp “Company Man” aboard the Deepwater Horizon.

“Deepwater Horizon” opens with Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) saying goodbye to his lovely wife (Kate Hudson) and daughter. Today, like many other days, finds Mike — a real-life Transocean chief electronics technician — out at sea, overseeing the oil rigs. All is well … until it is not. As day turns to night, the rig’s defense system collapses, erupting into flames. The result is an explosion that kills 11 people. Moreover, it proved to be the biggest petroleum spill in this country’s history. The film recounts that fateful night — which actually transpired on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico on.

“Deepwater Horizon” ends with a list of 11 people who died aboard the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, but it spends nearly two hours beforehand focused on one survivor. Electronics expert Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) is the courageous figure at the center of this unsettling reenactment, directed by Peter Berg with a sharp eye for fiery details and the morbid suspense leading up to it, but fewer ideas to prop up the mayhem. As the bursting oil gives way to flames, Williams and gruff installation manager Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell on autopilot) squint and grunt their way through the shadowy structure in a hectic escape that forms the movie’s prolonged finale. Even though it takes nearly an hour to get there, the payoff is simplistic. “Deepwater Horizon” fixates on beginning of the infamous oil spill with the superficial intensity of a theme park ride. Peter Berg likes stories about regular people — the kind of people who work on oil rigs and and don’t necessarily relate to on-screen smoothies like James Bond — and for the self-professed “second half” of his directing career, including films like “Lone Survivor,” Berg has started focusing on just that. For his latest film, the fact-based “Deepwater Horizon,” Berg turns his attention to the 2010 oil rig disaster on the eponymous Louisiana drilling platform, with thrilling — and often heart-wrenching — results.
The film follows the rig on its last viable day, as the so-called “bad well” starts collapsing after a series of terrible decisions, systematic breakdowns and just plain old pressure slowly render it not only inoperable, but hugely dangerous. Berg’s frequent star Mark Wahlberg stars as electrician Mike Williams, who leads the film alongside Kurt Russell as the rig’s head honcho, Gina Rodriquez as a whipsmart member of the...

Add “Deepwater Horizon” to the list of 2016 films based on true events. Mark Wahlberg is teaming up with “Lone Survivor” director Peter Berg again to star in this action-packed story chronicling the devastating aftermath of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Remembered as the worst spill in U.S. history, the incident involved a Bp-operated rig exploding and sinking near the Mississippi River Delta before it unloaded millions of gallons of crude oil into the water for over a month. Starring alongside Wahlberg’s oil rig worker Mike Williams are Kate Hudson as his wife, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, and Gina Rodriguez. “Deepwater Horizon” will have a nationwide theatrical release on Sept. 30. Mark Wahlberg strives to survive the disaster that sparked the devastating 2010 Bp oil spill in the new trailer for Deepwater Horizon.
The film focuses on a crew of workers stationed at the titular offshore oil rig, centered around Wahlberg's portrayal of Mike Williams (in The New York Times article the movie is based on, Williams was an electronics technician who testified that he raised concerns about the rig's safety before the disaster).

In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon explosion resulted in the largest accidental marine oil spill and biggest environment disaster in U.S. history, as well as the death of 11 people on the rig. Hollywood soon saw that the heartbreaking struggle of those involved was rife for cinematic adaptation, especially since the rig had such a sensational name. Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg have spent the last few years working tirelessly on bringing this story to life. We now have our first teaser trailer for Deepwater Horizon and it looks as though their efforts have paid off. I.m a big fan of this teaser trailer. Peter Berg and his creative team don.t waste any time in getting to the humanity of Deepwater Horizon.s story, showing us Mark Wahlberg.s Mike Williams at home with his wife, played by Kate Hudson, and his young daughter, which will drive the story forward...

It’s always entertaining to chart the career of Mark Wahlberg. He’s one of the few actors out there today who can easily shift between brassy blockbuster fare and buzzy prestige pics. Last year, he toplined Transformers: Age of Extinction (the year’s highest-grossing movie, and one of its worst-reviewed) and followed it up by courting Oscar in a remake of The Gambler. 2015 should prove no different – he’ll star in Ted 2 this summer then make an awards bid in this fall’s Deepwater Horizon.

Despite the loss of original director J.C. Chandor, the film based on the tragedy aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig is still going ahead, with Peter Berg taking the reins. He’s now started cranking the cameras in New Orleans and the first image from the film – of Mark Wahlberg as chief electronics technician Mike Williams – is online. The movie, which also features Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Kate Hudson, Gina Rodriguez and Dylan O’Brien, charts the events on the Bp oil rig in the 48 hours leading up to the 2010 disaster and the day itself. The behind-the-scenes tale will highlight stories of real-life heroism around the incident, which were not made public at the time but appeared in the script’s source material, a New York Times article entitled 'Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour'. The paper’s piece chronicled how 11 people were killed and 16 injured when the rig blew,...
