He joined the rock group
TOTO in 1986. As the band's third lead singer, he can be heard on several of the group's top-40 hits...including "I'll Be Over You," "Could This Be Love," "Pamela," and "Stop Loving You".
After two albums and subsequent tours ("Fahrenheit" and "The Seventh One"), Williams was fired over drug dependency which -- along with inflamed vocal cords -- impeded his effectiveness as a performer. In view of all this, TOTO drummer Jeff Porcaro issued an ultimatum to the band: "I can't make anything click with a guy who's this way. Either he packs up and goes home, or *I* do". Accordingly, Williams left the group and went into rehab; he then reconciled with Porcaro, but did not rejoin TOTO until after Jeff's death in 1992.
