I’m going to start by boldly/naively stating that I am not as big a fan of horror as I could be or indeed as many of you are likely to be. Yet I do have faith in the genre, I believe it to have the possibility and potential to make classic cinema, the obvious likes of Alien and The Shining are fine examples of that. As horror continues on into the 21st century there are one or two pieces of cinematic gold for every dozen appalling slasher sequels, monster mash-ups and vampire flicks.
Below is a list of 10 filmmakers, writers and actors who I guestimate could be crucial to the future of horror. So here it goes, a horror rookie looking into the possible future crystal ball of the genre with some very safe predictions (filmmakers that have already proven their craft) and a few more riskier suggestions.

The creators of Squidbillies sure do have a lot to hoop and holler about, given the absurdist show is in its sixth year, with an impending sixth season due out on September 11th, 2011.
But what might really get creators Dave Willis and Jim Fortier firing guns in the air? How about the release of Squidbillies: Volume 4 on DVD? Say, isn't that the same DVD we're giving away today?
Starting June 21st 2011, fans can own the DVD, which features the entire ten episodes and a slew of bonus material from the the fifth season. From the official press release:
It’s mayhem time! The 'billies are crazier and more dysfunctional than ever and their antics will be documented on DVD in the Adult Swim release of Squidbillies Volume 4 on June 21, 2011. Everyone’s favorite (and maybe the only) inbred hillbilly squids are up to their usual reckless ways, getting into trouble...

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

I have been waiting for Dominic Murphy’s Jesco White biopic “White Lightnin’” to find its way onto DVD for quite some time now, and, for the most part, my hopes and dreams have been left dangling in the proverbial Appalachian breeze. The film chronicles the life of legendary “dancing outlaw” Jesco White, a man who became something of a cult phenomenon back in the day thanks to a heavily-traded bootleg of this decidedly peculiar individual’s dancing abilities. The high water mark for his popularity was an appearance on “Roseanne”, an episode I’ve yet to catch in syndication. IFC Films dumped the film into a handful of theaters at the beginning of the year, but a DVD release date has yet to be set. Please, for the love of all that’s holy, release this film as soon as humanly possible. As always, a handy synopsis: Deep in...

But what we're really looking forward to spending a few hours in the company of an undertaking Bill Murray ("Get Low"), an Italian-speaking Tilda Swinton ("I Am Love") and a toga-wearing Rachel Weisz ("Agora") in the comfort of air-conditioned theater over the next three months. (Either that or we'll be enjoying them from the comfort of home online, on demand or on DVD.)

Director Jacob Young is in town to present his cult-legendary documentary about cult-legend wildman Jesco White- this is like meeting a man who fell into a blackhole and lived to tell about it. Do Not Miss This One!
Join us for the classic documentary about Jesco White, greatest living Appalachian mountain dancer, hell-raiser, glue-sniffer and all-around hero for our times.
“In the dark recesses of the hills of Boone County, West Virginia lives a man named Jesse (Jesco) White. Around 1990, the eccentric “genius” of this Appalachian everyman became the subject of an irreverent documentary titled Dancing Outlaw, and whether viewed as a comedy or a study in psychosis, the video has managed to catch the attention of quite a few people…This sociological milestone takes the viewer on an enlightening trip into the lives of people in a part of America that is shrouded in mystery, folklore and (not always unjustified) stereotypes.

Mark Kermode enjoys a Billy Paul biopic, a faux-biopic of mountain-dancing madman Jesco White, two David Lynch collections and a celebration of Derek Jarman
Over the past few years, several music documentaries that would previously have been confined to TV have taken a brief theatrical bow before appearing on DVD. This year's standout was Am I Black Enough for You (pictured, 2009, Drakes Avenue, E) the story of Philadelphia soul legend Billy Paul. Having achieved mainstream success with "Me and Mrs Jones", Paul horrified his "cross-over" fans with the radical broadside that gives this DVD its name, which promptly relegated him to outsider status. Years later, artists such as Schoolly D (who features here) helped to reclaim him as a lost icon of black power, although the bittersweet battle between principle and opportunity is left unresolved in this engrossing portrait.

Ask me what the most ambitious films are of the year, and so far I might point you to Dominic Murphy’s White Lightnin’ - a crazy piece of filmmaking that merits a "genre" label of its own. The pic was a recent winner Hitchcock D’Or at the Dinard Film Festival and grabbed the headlines less than 48 hours ago for winning big at the Mumbai Film Festival. Screen Daily reports that Sundance Selects won't leave this small in stature film orphaned in the backwoods for much longer. - Ask me what the most ambitious films are of the year, and so far I might point you to Dominic Murphy’s White Lightnin’ - a crazy piece of filmmaking that merits a "genre" label of its own. Jesco White and Hank Williams IIIThe Wild and Wonderful Whites of West VirginiaYou can have Jon and Kate, the Osbournes or the Kardashians. I'll take the Whites of Boone County, West Virginia for pure reality entertainment. Produced by the "Jackass" MTV folks the documentary follows these modern day hillbillies with their bent for crime. They make the Gotti mob look like the Osmonds. Openly using and selling drugs, milking the government entitlement system and maybe worst of all, giving their kids names like Cheyan and Tylor. Hank Williams III contributes some tunes with "Punch Fight Fuck!" being the appropriate theme song. Downtown CallingDowntown...

The White clan are West Virginia’s most psychotic, fun living, pill popping, gun toting and just plain dangerous family ever. “Boy, this is how we do it hillbilly style” says one of the clan as he blows stuff away with a rifle in the backyard. There are loads of people in the White clan, and I could barely understand their thick Appalachian accents, but I have to tell you, I love these people. A beautiful toxic tonic to the fake drivel that make up the Kardashians. An inspiration to anarchists everywhere, and also to people who think that Ozzy Osbourne turned into a giant pansy. The doc. was the brainchild of Johnny Knoxville of Jackass fame, and MTV stumped up the finance.
You might have already heard of Jesco White, son of the mountain dancing legend D.

White Lightnin’ is a sorta biographic flick about Jesco "the Dancing Outlaw" White, an Appalachian step dancer with a “weak mind” and a propensity to keep it that way. On a metaphoric level, it’s also a film about what tends to happen when you treat mental illness with a combination of brutality and drugs. And literal religion.
White Lightnin’ is a story about a man trying to escape himself and who will go to insane lengths to get there. Done documentary style, we first meet Jesco White (Jessie) when he’s just six years old and is already a connoisseur of high-octane gasoline and lighter fluid. While sonny boy huffs and puffs, his father, D-Ray, amuses all at the neighborly get-togethers by doing a little fancy mountain step-dancing.

From the Over the Top Fest website Written by Vice Magazine co-founders, Shane Smith and Eddy Moretti, White Lightnin’ tells the story of Jesco White, ‘The Dancing Outlaw’. Jesco (Edward Hogg) is the last of the Appalachian Mountain dancers. Ever since he was a child who was hooked on huffing gas and lighter fluid, his daddy D Ray (Prison Break’s Muse Watson) tried to keep his boy on the right hand of the Lord. But it didn’t always take. When D Ray is murdered, Jesco is in danger of falling into the darkness. Thankfully he has two calming influences in his life. The traditional dances that his father had taught him as a boy, and his loving wife, Priscilla (Carrie Fisher). They can only soothe his demons for so long though before Jesco spirals out of control and leaves in his wake, one of the darkest rampages you’ll see all year.

Man, where I live (near Denver, Colorado) we really don't have much in the way of fests except for the Denver Film Festival and the one in Boulder which both heavily favor high-brow fest circuit stuff which really isn't interesting to us around here which is why I'm jealous of our own Dr. Nathan who will get to see the opening night film White Lightnin' (stills here), the story of the dancing outlaw Jesco White. Also playing will be Tokyo!, Qe favorite Visioneers (review), and the indy Norse discovery of America flick (which Magnolia picked up and I have a screener of, woop!) Severed Ways.
But Ott not only does film, they do music to.. so check it all out at the website below.

A 1991 PBS documentary called Dancing Outlaw introduced the world to the life and times of gas-huffing, vengeance-seeking, tap-dancin’ Jesco White. White Lightnin’, which premiered recently at Sundance, is British director Dominic Murphy’s reportedly more surreal take on this fabled Appalachian anti-hero. While not locked in reform school, work camps, or the psych ward, the young Jesco White learned his special breed of clog dancing from his father, who was eventually killed in a random act of hillbilly violence. In White Lightnin’ Jesco picks up his daddy’s tap shoes and hits the road, where he comes to grips with the art, addiction, and madness that have plagued his violent life story. And somewhere along the way he meets his wife, played by none other than Carrie Fisher. While David D’Arcy speaks almost fondly of White Lightnin’s redneck-exploitation (he was probably stretching for other ways to describe this...

For those who don't know of Jesco White, he's known as the "Dancing Outlaw", an acclaimed mountan dancer from the Appalachian region whose been the subject of two documentaries and whose fought depression, drug addiction, and poverty as much of the Appalachian region does. He's become pretty famous, and now a full feature has been shot about his life and I have to say the photography looks stunning and the storyline sounds fantastic.
