The Conners Season 6’s Roseanne Character Return Sets Up A Brutal Tragedy
Image
Crystal's return in The Conners season 6 could be setting up a tragic storyline due to her congestive heart failure. The show has started bringing back characters from Roseanne, like Crystal, to add depth to the current cast. Crystal's ill health could become a central storyline, potentially replacing Bev's storyline, in The Conners season 6.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for The Conners season 6, episode 5.

While The Conners season 6, episode 5, brought back a major Roseanne guest star, this cameo could set up a tragedy later in the series. The Conners hasn't relied much on bringing back characters from Roseanne that weren't already on board the revival. Rather, it's spent more time developing its current cast, along with its original characters.

Although the cast of The Conners were mostly introduced in Roseanne, the spinoff wasn’t too eager to bring back supporting characters from the original show. After all, the creators clearly didn...

The Conners’ Baffling Crystal Joke Mocks Roseanne’s Death (& It Makes Me Very Uncomfortable)
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Conners season 6, episode 5.

Crystal's return in The Conners season 6 brings an update on her health and relationship with Dan. A joke about Crystal's pain meds in the latest episode disrespects Roseanne's death from an overdose. The possibility of Crystal returning in future episodes remains uncertain, but her storyline could continue.

The Conners season 6 joke about Crystal's condition disrespects Roseanne's death. After several years of absence in the Roseanne spinoff, Natalie West returns with a substantial update about what has been going on in her life. As one of the most prominent supporting cast members in the cult family sitcom, Crystal has a long history with the Conners, particularly with Jackie and Roseanne. That being said, her comeback appearance in The Conners season 6, episode 5, "When Sisters Collide and The Return of the Grifters," will move forward her relationship with Dan.

For context, Crystal started as...

‘The Conners’: Crystal From ‘Roseanne’ Makes Dramatic Return – What Next?
Image
A familiar face showed up in The Conners Wednesday (March 13) night when legacy cast member Natalie West returned to the show to reprise her role as Crystal Anderson. West featured on the fifth episode of the currently airing sixth season, marking her first appearance on the Roseanne spinoff since the popular sitcom’s inaugural 2018 run. She appeared in the episode “When Sisters Collide and The Return of the Grifters,” where it was revealed Dan (John Goodman) had been using money to pay for her medical bills. Long-time viewers will remember West from Roseanne, where she starred in a total of 59 episodes across the show’s ten seasons. She was made a series regular for Seasons 3 and 4 and recurred before and after. Her character, Crystal, was introduced as an old friend of Roseanne and Dan. She later married Dan’s father, Ed (Ned Beatty), and the pair had two children together,...

Original Roseanne Character Return Confirmed For The Conners Season 6
Image
The Conners brings back Natalie West as Roseanne's Crystal Anderson, adding nostalgia and continuity to the storyline. Crystal's return may involve Neville's financial issue with Dan, hinting at a past familial connection. As The Conners potentially heads into season 7, it's unclear if Crystal will be a recurring character going forward.

The Conners is bringing back an original Roseanne character after being absent from the spinoff for five years. ABC's hit comedy was born out of the cancelation of the original Roseanne revival, but it continues to thrive. After Roseanne was killed by an opioid overdose, Dan and the family moved on with their lives in Lanford. Despite The Conners rewriting some of its Roseanne history, for the most part, it maintains the established continuity.

Legacy characters have been brought in to evoke nostalgia, and that's exactly what an upcoming The Conners season 6 appearance will do. Per TVLine, the episode...

The Conners Dropped One Intriguing Roseanne Character With No Explanation
Image
The Conners had to drastically reshape its story after Roseanne Barr's firing, resulting in the disappearance of some recurring characters. Crystal, a significant character in both Roseanne and the revival, mysteriously vanished in The Conners, despite her potential for interesting story arcs. Crystal's disappearance is unusual and leaves fans wondering why she returned briefly only to be dropped again, as if she no longer exists in The Conners' world.

Even though many of Roseanne’s recurring stars cropped up throughout The Conners, the spinoff dropped at least one intriguing figure with no explanation. The Conners had a hard time continuing the story of 2017’s Roseanne revival. When Roseanne season 10 aired, the show was able to revisit the Conner family without changing much about their usual dynamic. However, when series star Roseanne Barr was fired due to racist tweets, The Conners needed to kill her off and radically reshape the...

The Cast of Roseanne: Where Are They Now?
Image
The Conners, the rebranded sequel series to the original Roseanne of the 1990s, is in its fifth season and there seem to be some hints that there will be a major character death by the end. The show has never shied away from difficult subjects and made its name by tackling contemporary issues with humor and nuance. The main cast of characters have all dealt with adversity and struggle, and 20 years later, some characters are still navigating their issues.

When Roseanne was renewed after a long hiatus, fans were excited to see beloved former cast members return to old roles. Many of the actors from the original run returned for the renewal while others went on different paths, and it's worthwhile to see what everyone has been doing since, whether it's continuing on The Conners, starring in other popular sitcoms, or even getting nominated for an Academy Award.

Conners Season 5's Returning Roseanne Character Teased By Exec Producer
Image
The Conners season 5 EP Bruce Helford teases more details about the highly anticipated Roseanne guest star. After the sudden cancellation of the Roseanne revival due to a racist tweet from lead actor Roseanne Barr, The Conners spinoff was ordered to series by ABC in 2018. The show finds returning Roseanne veterans John Goodman's Dan, Laurie Metcalf's Jackie, Sara Gilbert's Darlene, and Lecy Goranson's Becky grappling with the death of their family matriarch while also struggling to survive on their modest, blue-collar incomes. Recently, it was announced that an original character from Roseanne, who appeared during the early episodes of the show will return as a guest in The Conners season 5, and now more hints about their identity have been revealed.

‘The Conners’ Renewed For Season 2 By ABC
John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Jay R. Ferguson, Alicia Goranson, Laurie Metcalf, Emma Kenney, and Ames McNamara in The Conners (2018)
It’s official — ABC has ordered a second season of Roseanne spinoff The Conners. The renewal comes after series’ producer Werner Entertainment secured new deals with the core cast of Roseanne veterans, John Goodman, who plays Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf (Jackie Harris), Sara Gilbert (Darlene Conner) and Lecy Goranson (Becky Conner-Healy). The size of the order has not been revealed by ABC but has been speculated to be 13 episodes, slightly bigger than last season’s 11.

While not the mega hit of the size of the Roseanne revival, The Conners has been a breakout for ABC. In its first season, the Roseanne followup averaged 9.5 million total viewers and a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating (Live+7) to rank as the season’s No. 1 new comedy in total viewers and 18-49 and ABC’s No. 1 comedy in both categories. The Conners improved its Tuesday 8 pm time period by 33% in total viewers and by 22% in adults...

The Conners: ABC Orders Additional Episode for the 2018-19 Season
While The Conners TV show has not been cancelled or renewed for season two, ABC has shown it has some faith in the Roseanne spinoff. The network has ordered an additional episode for the first season, bringing the total count to 11. The accidental sequel, which was only ordered after the network cancelled Roseanne in wake of Roseanne Barr's 'repugnant' social media posts, has done quite well in the ratings thus far, but it has a limited episode count, because of the principal cast's limited availability.

The episode begins in the Conner kitchen with Roseanne talking to Jackie about Bev’s sleepwalking. Bev enters soon after, and complains about sleeping on a lumpy bed upstairs. Dan suggests she go live with Jackie, but Jackie refuses because, well, she “hates her.” Roseanne argues that she has no space, what with Darlene and the kids already living under her roof. 'Roseanne' Continues to Beat out Competitor Shows With Its High Ratings Week After Week
Apparently, America really missed the Conners! ABC brought back Roseanne on Tuesday, March 27 for the sitcom's first new episode since its original run ended in 1997, and millions of folks tuned in to catch up with the TV family for the premiere. And ever since the series first aired a few weeks ago, it's been beating out all its competitor shows as well every week! According to Variety, it topped all but The Voice last Tuesday night (impressive!). But just because Roseanne didn't beat the singing competition last week (we have a feeling it will tonight!) doesn't mean fans still don't want more. Shortly after the premiere, it was revealed that the reboot has been picked up for another season. "We're thrilled that America has welcomed the Conner family back into their homes," Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, said in a statement. "The show is as fresh and relevant today as...

‘Roseanne’ Reboot Renewed for Second Season After Tremendous Debut
Here’s the no-brainer of the week: ABC has finalized a renewal of its “Roseanne” revival for a second go-round — which, the network notes, will actually be its 11th season. ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, who told IndieWire earlier in the week that such a move was likely forthcoming, announced the pickup on Friday.

“Roseanne” opened to huge numbers, which continue to grow. After just one day of Nielsen’s delayed viewing counted, Tuesday’s “Roseanne” premiere has now jumped to 21.9 million viewers, and its adults 18-49 rating is now at a 6.2. (It was a 5.2 rating after its live debut.) That number will continue to grow once Live+3 and Live+7 data come in.

ABC had already sealed deals with the show’s stars to return for another season — this time, for 13 episodes. And Roseanne Barr has previously expressed her desire to keep the show going in success.

Full Trailer Released For ABC's Roseanne Revival Series
Riving old TV series has become big business in Hollywood and it seems like one of the most anticipated revivals coming is Roseanne. I was never really into this show when I was growing up, but I know a lot of people loved the sitcom, including my parents who watched it all the time. Those people are sure to enjoy this revival.

The full cast of the original series is coming back, including John Goodman, who originally died at the end of the series. But, as you'll see in the trailer, they play it off like he never really died. I guess if the comic books can get away with cheating death all the time, Roseanne can do it too.

Featuring the complete original cast, new series regulars and notable returning guest stars, the revival will explore life, death and everything in between through the relatable, hilarious and brutally honest lens of the Conner household.

DVD Review: Nate and Margaret
Nate And Margaret

Stars: Tyler Ross, Natalie West, Conor McCahill, Gaby Hoffmann, Charles Solomon Jr., Cliff Chamberlain, Danny Rhodes, Allison Latta | Written by Nathan Adloff, Justin D.M. Palmer | Directed by Nathan Adloff

I assumed upon hearing its title, that Nate and Margaret would be a quirky indie rom-com in which a young couple get together, break up and then get together again, having learnt some valuable life lessons along the way and exchanged some winning one liners, possibly co-starring a comedy dog. I was right on some counts but off the mark on others. Most unfortunately, there’s no comedy dog. Pleasingly though, Nate and Margaret managed to be far less predictable than that and was in fact an enjoyably offbeat tale of friendship.

Nate (Tyler Ross) is a nineteen year old film student who is gay. His unlikely best friend is Margaret (Natalie West), a fifty-two year old spinster...

Blu-ray Review: Great Extras Enhance Mike Birbiglia’s ‘Sleepwalk with Me’
Chicago – Sometimes the best way for comics to find an ideal vehicle for their abilities is to direct it themselves. 2012 offered ample proof of that, with Louis C.K. and Lena Dunham setting a stupendously high bar for TV comedy with their respective self-made programs. Of course, “Louis” and “Girls” benefit greatly from the contributions of their first-rate ensembles, yet both are also driven by a singular vision.

I can’t imagine a better person to direct the adaptation of Mike Birbiglia’s 2008 one-man stage show than Birbiglia himself. He’s already proven in a series of bit roles (most notably in Lynn Shelton’s “Your Sister’s Sister” and on Dunham’s “Girls”) that he’s a master of awkward humor as excruciatingly funny as it is painfully authentic. His nonchalant mannerisms and seemingly offhanded line delivery are so believable that it frankly hurts to watch his alter ego bomb onstage,...

Film Feature: The 10 Most Overlooked Films of 2012
Chicago – The wider range of films critics see during a single year, the less susceptible they are to the inevitable onslaught of expensive awards campaigns. Just because a studio can bark the loudest doesn’t mean its product has any bite. The majority of Oscar bait I’ve witnessed during the final months of 2012 have been wildly overrated behemoths weighed down in self-importance and executed with all the calculated precision of a undergrad aiming to score an A on the final. What’s lacking from many of these pictures is the spontaneity and imagination of true artistry, and that is precisely what the films on this list have in spades. From the most criminally overlooked blockbusters to the most invaluable indie gems available online, here are the Top Ten Most Overlooked Films of 2012.

DVD Review: ‘Nate and Margaret’ Marks Superb Debut of Director Nathan Adloff
Chicago – Nothing forms the basis of a friendship quite like a shared understanding. When the hearts and minds of two people are compatible. everything else falls into place. It doesn’t matter if one happens to be a 52-year-old woman and the other is a 19-year-old man. That’s one of the simple truths that “Nate & Margaret” illuminates without drawing too much attention to it.

The ages of Margaret (Natalie West) and Nate (Tyler Ross) are irrelevant. When they’re first seen browsing through a thrift store with a mixture of curiosity and amusement, their chemistry is immediately apparent. It’s clear that they provide each other with a sense of comfort and completeness that they haven’t found with anyone else. Yet as both friends reach pivotal transitional points in their lives, their tight-knit relationship threatens to stunt their growth. Only on their own can Nate and Margaret truly explore their identities as individuals.

Interview: ‘Nate and Margaret’ Star Gaby Hoffmann on Acting, ‘Girls,’ Chicago
Chicago – Few performers are lucky enough to make their big-screen debut in a hit movie, let alone two. In 1989, 7-year-old Gaby Hoffmann starred opposite John Candy and Macaulay Culkin in John Hughes’ “Uncle Buck,” as well as shared the screen with Kevin Costner and Burt Lancaster in Phil Alden Robinson’s Oscar-nominee “Field of Dreams.” Not a bad way to start a career.

Over the following years, Hoffmann has worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Woody Allen (“Everyone Says I Love You”), Kenneth Lonergan (“You Can Count on Me”) and Todd Solondz (“Life During Wartime”). She’s also made a number of TV appearances, and recently starred on the third season premiere of Louis C.K.’s revered sitcom, “Louie.” Her latest film is the award-winning indie, “Nate & Margaret,” which marks the feature directorial debut of Chicago actor and filmmaker Nathan Adloff. The film centers on an unlikely friendship between a 52-year-old aspiring stand-up comedian,...

Film News: ‘Nate and Margaret’ Makes Chicago Debut at Gene Siskel Film Center on June 8, 2012
Chicago – One of Nathan Adloff’s goals as a filmmaker is mastering the art of the awkward silence. That moment when audiences shift uneasily in their chairs, balancing on the razor’s edge between amusement and agony, appeals greatly to Adloff, a self-professed fan of Christopher Guest and Todd Solondz. His award-winning shorts “Untied Strangers” and “Irregular Fruit” are both squirm-inducing gems.

For his feature directorial debut, “Nate & Margaret,” the Chicago filmmaker made a couple notable departures from his usual work method, the results of which can be seen at the movie’s Chicago premiere June 8th at the Gene Siskel Film Center. Instead of relying heavily on improvisation, Adloff crafted a script with his close writing partner, Justin D.M. Palmer. And though his picture is chockfull of awkward silences—at brutal open mic nights and in tense restaurant altercations—it is also a surprisingly warm-hearted and endearing look at an unconventional friendship.

Nate & Margaret | Review
Director: Nathan Adloff Writers: Nathan Adloff, Justin D.M. Palmer Starring: Natalie West, Tyler Ross, Conor McCahill, Gaby Hoffmann, Charles Solomon Jr., Cliff Chamberlain, Danny Rhodes, Allison Latta, Sadieh Rifai, Shawn Ryan, John Ainsworth Margaret (Natalie West) is a 52-year-old amateur stand-up comedian. Her best friend is Nate (Tyler Ross), a 19-year-old film student. Because of their age difference, one might ask why Nate would choose Margaret as the person he hangs out with the most? Writer-director Nathan Adloff's answer to that question is simply that it does not matter. Of course Adloff is well aware that our society is confounded by spring-winter friendships -- which is sort of the whole point of Nate & Margaret, to show that age does not matter as much as people think. And, really, why does society stipulate that friends must be of the same generation?...
