- In an interview with Terry Gross on "Fresh Air" she told how she faked her way into a job as a disc jockey at KJAZ in San Francisco. She says she knew nothing about jazz, but the station manager interviewing her for the job told her to go into the station library and find the 100 best jazz albums. What she did was make a list of the albums that were most worn on their covers' corners and edges.
- She earned a bachelor's degree from U.C. Berkeley and a master's of fine arts from UCLA.
- After working as a disc jockey at jazz station KJAZ-FM in San Francisco she worked in public radio in remote stations in the Alaskan arctic.
- Was member of the dramatic jury at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006.
