Exclusive: Jamie Lee Curtis and Blumhouse are developing Lizzie Johnson’s book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, as a feature film. They will also take stories of bus driver Kevin McKay and school teacher Mary Ludwig, who helped navigate a bus full of children through the deadly fire, to fully develop the story.
Described as a tour de force, the book is the definitive firsthand account of California’s Camp Fire, the nation’s deadliest wildfire in a century, and examines what went wrong and how to avert future tragedies as the climate crisis unfolds.
“As a lifelong Californian I watched with profound sadness the ferocity and destruction of the Camp Fire that consumed Paradise, California. When I heard Lizzie Johnson on NPR, and then read her amazing book, I knew that I wanted to be able to turn this story into a film and explore the human elements,...

Exclusive: House Productions, the British producer behind Benedict Cumberbatch’s drama Brexit: The Uncivil War, has nabbed the screen rights to the remarkable true story of an Auschwitz hero.
The film and TV company, run by former Film4 head Tessa Ross and ex-Working Title TV chief Juliette Howell, has optioned former war reporter Jack Fairweather’s The Volunteer.
The book, which just scored the popular Costa Book of the Year prize, is a biography about Witold Pilecki. Pilecki was a covert operative who volunteered to be captured and taken to deadly new Nazi detention centre, Auschwitz, in order to infiltrate the camp, organise a resistance from within, gather evidence of the atrocities being committed against thousands of European Jews, and ultimately attack the Nazi forces from where they’d least expect. However, Pilecki’s incredible and heroic story would later be wiped from the annals of history by Poland’s...

Exclusive: It was one of the most poignant and heartbreaking stories to come out of the U.S. forces’ fight against Al-Qaeda. Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman, mortally wounded, was first thought to have died in the mountains of Afghanistan in the battle of Takur Ghar. This hero who took on two dozen Taliban soldiers and saved 23 Americans was then left behind when Seal Team 6 retreated. Evidence is overwhelming that Chapman survived being hit: After the retreat, military video footage shows a man courageously fighting out of a bunker all alone on the mountain and, among other findings, Chapman’s voice was unmistakenly heard on the radio. A true American hero.
The story of the fight and what occurred has been written in a book and is also the subject of a Newsweek cover story “Honor Guard.” Now management and production shingle Thruline Entertainment has optioned an upcoming book...

Exclusive: Levantine Films has optioned Jerry and Marge Go Large, an article by Jason Fagone for Huffington Post’s Highline. Brad Copeland will write the script. Gil Netter will produce alongside Levantine.
Fagone’s article focuses on Jerry and Marge, a couple married for over 60 years who found a nifty way to finance retirement. A mildly dyslexic cereal company materials analyst with a penchant for puzzles and patterns named Gerald Selbee figured out a loophole in the Michigan Cash WinFall state lottery game. Essentially, when the jackpot reaches roughly $2 million and no one wins, payoffs for smaller prizes swell dramatically, which basically assures a profit for anyone who buys at least $100,000 worth of tickets. He used it to enrich family and friends. After Michigan did away with the WinFall, Jerry turned his attention to one in Massachusetts.
Along the way, he bumped up against a group of MIT students who discovered the same loophole,...

Exclusive: Blumhouse has acquired the rights to adapt the New York Magazine article “Worst Roommate Ever” about a serial squatter and murderer in what will be the first project developed simultaneously for both film and television. Chris Morgan from the Fast & Furious franchise is on board to develop the feature.
The story, written by William Brennan — who will serve as an executive producer on both projects — is about Alex Miller who let Jed Creek into her Philadelphia apartment, not having a clue he was actually Jamison Bachman, a notorious serial squatter and the ultimate Craigslist nightmare. In an expensive and frightening ordeal that dragged on for months, Bachman slowly laid claim to Alex’s apartment, using his intricate knowledge of tenancy laws to stay one step ahead of her. He kicked down doors, attacked her and left her feeling unsafe in her own home.

Exclusive: Fox 2000 will tell the story of the trailblazing rise of Helen Gurley Brown, who became one of the first female editors of a national magazine when she took the reins at Cosmopolitan in 1965. The studio has optioned Enter Helen: The Rise And Reign Of The Original Cosmo Girl, the upcoming book by Brooke Hauser that HarperCollins will publish next year. Chernin Entertainment will produce, and Marisa Paiva is overseeing for the studio.
I’m picturing Mad Men, except with a ballsy woman who thrives in a male-dominated world, her currency a legion of women ready to rebel against the housewife stereotype in search of careers and sexual freedom. The story begins in the early ’60s when she wrote the blockbuster book Sex And The Single Girl and then took the top job at the then-floundering Cosmo. She remade the magazine, and in doing so, helped changed the perception to...

Our modestly budgeted, truly independent little movie was a great big fat hit. We sold out both screenings, sadly having to turn people away. We got great reviews and did many press interviews,...
