Marianne Faithfull, the British singer who scored hits including “As Tears Go By” and “Broken English” as she went from a highly publicized romantic relationship with Mick Jagger to worldwide fame in her own right, died Thursday. She was 78.
Faithfull’s death in London was announced by her family in a statement to the BBC.
Faithfull also appeared in such films as I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname (1967) and The Girl on the Motorcycle (1968) and on the stage in Three Sisters and Hamlet, though her career was curtailed in the 1970s by heroin addiction, alcoholism and homelessness.
She forged a dramatic comeback in 1979 with the album Broken English, which landed her a Grammy nomination for best female rock vocal performance. In 2011, she was awarded the Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France’s highest cultural honors.

Legendary English singer Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78.
According to a statement from her family, Faithfull “passed away peacefully” on Thursday, January 30th. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
A defining voice of the 1960s, Faithfull first rose to fame with the song “As Tears Go By,” which was written for her by The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. She proceeded to release several more hit singles throughout the decade, but her career became largely overshadowed by her tumultuous personal life, which included a high-profile relationship with Jagger and battles with addiction. Several of The Rolling Stones’ songs were apparently inspired by Jagger and Faithfull’s relationship, including “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Wild Horses,” and “Sister Morphine.”
Jagger remembered Faithfull in a statement released shortly after her passing, writing: “She was so much part of my life for so long.

BBC News boss Deborah Turness’ proclamation late last week that “we will make mistakes” during the election period appears to already be coming true, with a leading news presenter being forced to apologize to Nigel Farage this afternoon.
Geeta Guru-Murthy said the Honorary President of British political party Reform UK had used “customary inflammatory language” this morning during a report on a Reform UK press conference.
Several hours later, she appeared on BBC News to apologize, stating: “Earlier today we heard live from Nigel Farage speaking at that election event and when we came away from his live speech I used language to describe it which didn’t meet the BBC’s editorial standards on impartiality. I’d like to apologize to Mr Farage and viewers for this.”

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome, and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.
But after a nearly two-year break from touring, the Stones emerged last year with the shockingly great Hackney Diamonds.

The Rolling Stones’ No Filter tour continues.
Announced in 2017, the legendary rock band is preparing to return to the stages after taking a break for over two years. The last tour date they performed was November 23, 2021, in Hollywood, Florida.
The tour has faced quite a bit of setbacks. In March 2019, frontman Mick Jagger had to undergo a heart operation, postponing that year’s North American leg of the tour. Then in 2020, much like the rest of the world, the Covid-19 pandemic forced another North American leg postponement. The following year, drummer Charlie Watts had to sit out the rest of 2021 tour dates due to a reported heart surgery. Watts died that year on August 24.
The English rock band hasn’t been on tour since 2021. The upcoming tour in April will be the first tour since Watts’ death.
The No Filter tour will include stops in cities like Seattle, Denver and Los Angeles.

The Rolling Stones have been leaning into a high level of theatrical spectacle in visuals for songs from Hackney Diamonds, their latest studio album. In the visual, directed by Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak collaborator Calmatic, Hoult walks out of a tumultuous relationship and dances his way through the seasons. As time passes, he grows a scruffy beard and the Stones sing: “Oh,...

You may recognize the name of filmmaker Nick Broomfield as he has helmed some incredibly thought-provoking and provocative documentaries on several icons of pop culture such as Kurt Cobain, Whitney Houston and Tupac Shakur to name a few. Broomfield has now added another name to that list with his latest documentary feature “The Stones and Brian Jones”.
When thinking about The Rolling Stone’s the first names to come to mind are Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, however there is one founding member of the band that was crucial to developing their signature sound and that was Brian Jones. Many causal fans of the band are not familiar with Jones and his impact on the formation of one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands of all time.

Brian Jones, the oft-forgotten founder of The Rolling Stones, made significant contributions to the band's iconic sound and played multiple instruments on their hit records. Despite his integral role, Jones was ultimately fired from the band and replaced by Mick Taylor, pushing his legacy further into the background with each passing year. It might or might not be true, as Nick Broomfield declares in his new feature documentary, that “most people today” haven’t heard of Brian Jones. If it’s true of most young music fans, then a) yikes and b) The Stones and Brian Jones is here to bridge the generation gap. The Magnolia release, which is receiving a one-night theatrical showcase 10 days before its Nov. 17 general release, joins an ever-expanding pack of doc portraits exploring boomer musicians who led the rock revolution of the ’60s and ’70s.
Broomfield’s earlier takes on pop culture giants — among them Kurt Cobain, Whitney Houston, Leonard Cohen and Biggie and Tupac — have ranged from basic to divisive to lurid. In this case, taking a deep dive into public and private archives, he emerges with a surprisingly poignant study of the Rolling Stones co-founder, a middle-class kid who rebelled against his upbringing, found his...

The Rolling Stones are back with Hackney Diamonds, their first new album of original material in 18 years. Listen to the project below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Produced by Andrew Watt, Hackney Diamonds was recorded across studios in Los Angeles, London, Bahamas, and New York City. Like every other Rolling Stones album dubbed the best since 1978’s Some Girls, Hackney Diamonds features enough cringey lyrics, dodgy guitar riffs, and self-plagiarism (such as Keith Richards playing “Tumbling Dice” at the beginning of “Driving Me Too Hard”) to keep it out of the pantheon of their greatest releases. What parts of the album do capture is a genuinely contemporary flair that the Stones haven’t successfully embodied since they triangulated the emerging threads of punk and disco back in the late 1970s.
The album’s crisp, booming drums, hooky choruses, and livewire vocals have a radio-ready sheen without feeling forced, or compromising the Stones’s essential traits. The opening track, “Angry,” hardens the edges around a shiny pop-forward hook with a hit of stadium swagger and a roiling outro that piles on knotty guitar solos from Richards and Ronnie Wood. The fact that the Stones don’t sound...

The TV doc is described as “a rare glimpse of the Rolling Stones as they power forward” that is “told vividly through a first-ever roundtable conversation between the band (members)… giving viewers access to places they have never been.”
Director Paul Dugdale is coming off the recent success of “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium” and “Adele: One Night Only.” Previous Dugdale credits include “Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour” and “Coldplay: Music of the Spheres — Live at River Plate.”

As a founding member of The Rolling Stones, Brian Jones was fundamental in developing the sound of one of the greatest bands in rock history through less than a decade of their run. In 1969, Jones was found in his swimming pool — the victim of “death by misadventure” — becoming one of the first modern members of the infamous 27 Club. Now, as the Stones surpass their 60th anniversary, a documentary titled The Stones and Brian Jones is looking to give Brian Jones his proper due.
Directed by Nick Broomfield, who documented everyone from Tupac and Biggie to Sarah Palin and Aileen Wuornos, The Stones and Brian Jones looks to be just the sort of strong picture and analysis that we’ve come to expect from the director.

Not counting their blues covers record from 2016, the last time the Rolling Stones bequeathed us with an album of fresh material was during George W. Bush’s presidency. That record, 2006’s A Bigger Bang, was feisty but not especially memorable, and in the nearly two decades since, maybe even the Stones started to wonder if we needed another record by them. If they were going to drag themselves (and us) through the process again, and after such a long gap, they also must have known they’d have to make it worth everyone’s while.

The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger is sharing what it was like working with Lady Gaga on their newly released single “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.”
The track, which Jagger has previously described as gospel-flavored, is off the rock band’s upcoming album Hackney Diamonds and also features keys from Stevie Wonder.
The lead vocalist recently told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that the “Shallow” performer is a “really great singer” and that he’d “never heard her sing quite that style before, not exactly.”
As for creating the recording, Jagger said that did it “live in the room, and that was a great experience, her just coming in the room and her just opening up and seeing her bits and feeling her way and then getting more confident.”
He added, “And then we came back and then did some extra parts that we hadn’t done on the day and...

The Rolling Stones Enlists Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder for New Song “Sweet Sounds of Heaven”: Stream

The Rolling Stones have called in the big guns for their new song, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.” Listen to Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder help out the rock ‘n’ roll legends below.
“Sweet Sounds of Heaven” has a classic, slow-rolling blues vibe, as Wonder, at the behest of Jagger, lays down a smooth piano melody that melds with rousing horns and Keith Richards’ guitar. Jagger opens the track, paying tribute to the late Charlie Watts with lyrics like, “Bless the Father, bless the Son, hear the sound of the drums/ As it echoes through the valley and it bursts.”
Jagger is then joined by Gaga, who at first delivers restrained backing vocals on the second verse before letting it all hang out on the chorus. “No, I’m not, not goin’ to Hell/ In some dusty motel,” the duo sings. “And I’m not, not goin’ down/ In the dirt.

The Rolling Stones are set to return next month with their album, Hackney Diamonds, and a supporting world tour is expected follow suit. With Mick Jagger already 80 years old, and Keith Richards set to join him as an octogenarian come December, it’s certainly possible that this is The Stones’ last go-around — at least, in physical form.
In a new interview with Wall Street Journal Magazine, Jagger said he’d be open to a future hologram tour in the same spirit as Abba’s acclaimed “Voyage” concert. “You can have a posthumous business now, can’t you? You can have a posthumous tour,” Jagger said. “The technology has really moved on since the Abba thing.”
Fortunately, the prospect of a posthumous tour still seems a way offs. Jagger told WSJ Magazine that he is in good health. Meanwhile, Richards is living a “straight” lifestyle after mostly giving up alcohol, drugs,...

Keith Richards has divulged more about his infamous history of drug and alcohol use, along with his more recent turn to a “straight” lifestyle, in a new interview with The Telegraph.
“The cigarettes I gave up in 2019,” The Rolling Stones guitarist shared. “I haven’t touched them since. I gave up heroin in 1978. I gave up cocaine in 2006. I still like a drink occasionally – because I’m not going to heaven any time soon – but apart from that, I’m trying to enjoy being straight. It’s a unique experience for me.”
The always-candid Richards fondly recalled his former preferred drink of choice of vodka and orange soda, saying, “Oh, the Nuclear Waste,” before stressing that he only consumed “enough, always just enough” and confirmed he had since “given that up.”
The topic of his prolific drug use then naturally segued to the 79-year old’s views on longevity. “I’m blessed,...

Last year, Mick Jagger started feeling restless. Seventeen years had passed since the Rolling Stones had released an album of original material, and though they’d toured regularly — and made the difficult choice to soldier on after the devastating 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts — the on-and-off sessions they’d held for a potential new LP over the past decade hadn’t produced much they could use. When the Stones’ tour ended in Berlin last August, Jagger decided he’d had enough. So he pulled Keith Richards aside.

The LP is set to debut worldwide on Wednesday with an exclusive YouTube livestream.
