Aside from the obvious hype factor, movies are often marketed as being based on true stories because that makes it easier for filmmakers to place audiences in the right mindset for cinematic scares. After all, suspecting that a story could be true can sometimes be just as scary as knowing that it is. And if there’s one franchise that still uses this age-old technique to great effect, it’s The Conjuring. While the long-running series tends to embellish its source material and plays fast and loose with the facts, these movies inhabit a special place in the horror community’s collective heart because they still focus on real family dynamics, with our lovable leads always at the center.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga investigate a new haunting in The Conjuring: Last Rites, their final run in the franchise. Director Michael Chaves recently revealed that the film almost became a culminating event for their characters.
Chaves almost fulfilled one fan theory about The Conjuring: Last Rites, which would have seen Ed and Lorraine Warren taking on a gauntlet of previously vanquished evils. That would have been an epic battle, a fitting wrap-up to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's run in the saga. "Even as we were developing it, we were throwing a bunch of ideas out," Chaves told Entertainment Weekly. "How shamelessly big can we make it? How epic can we make it? Is this the culmination of all the demons coming to face them?"

Movies are a one-and-done kind of deal. To be fair, they used to be like that. You watch, you enjoy, you absorb, and you move on, or so we thought. Somewhere down the line, however, we decided to go big on franchises, really big. In better days, this newfound freedom allowed for a larger canvas – an expanded universe – and a fresh take on how one could tell and structure stories.
Quite some time, and then some, has already been spent trying to crack a formula that keeps pulling audiences back, irrespective of how many sequels, spinoffs, and reboots are produced. While the casuals have long languished, others are just terribly fatigued, but fans of certain franchises remain as devoted as ever.
We’re ranking ten franchises with the most loyal fan bases, not just based on box office numbers but also their cultural footprint. No trilogies or Blue Blanc Rogue-type cinema is allowed.

New Line Cinema Cco Richard Brener teases a "phase two" for The Conjuring Universe.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Brener was asked how much further The Conjuring Universe can reasonably be expected to go in the future. "It's testing through the roof and we're only at the director's cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you're normally very, very scared about the status of your film," Brener said of the next film in the franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites. "We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof. So while this is last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more." When asked if this meant that a Marvel Cinematic Universe-style "phase two" was in the works, Brener responded, "Phase two is Tbd."

Patrick Wilson, the star of franchises like The Conjuring, Insidious and Aquaman, has commented on his potential return to the DC Studios franchise. Wilson played Orm Marius, a.k.a. Ocean Master, in the two Aquaman entries that were directed by James Wan as part of Zack Snyder's Dceu. Now that James Gunn has taken over the franchise and turned it into the Dcu, fans are curious about which previous characters – if any – might be allowed to return.
Wilson spoke to Variety on the podcast Just for Variety, where he talked about his current projects. He's promoting his new film, Millers in Marriage, a drama written and directed by Edward Burns. However, Wilson is also pursuing a career in theatre. He's currently co-producing a musical based on the '80s film The Lost Boys, and in the past, he's been featured in plays like Oklahoma! and The Full Monty.

Patrick Wilson is the latest actor to join the upcoming Cape Fear remake. Wilson, whose addition was reported by Variety, joins previously announced cast members Amy Adams and Javier Bardem. Apple TV+'s screen adaptation will mark the third, following the classic J. Lee Thompson film from 1962 and Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake, both of which were based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. This version, however, will be the first time the story is explored episodically.
The 10-episode series' official logline reads:
A storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Adams) and Tom Bowden when Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.
Scorsese famously directed the 1990s remake, which starred Robert De Niro as convicted rapist Max Cady, who seeks revenge against his former public defender, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), whom he blames for his 14-year imprisonment. The film also starred Jessica Lange,...

Apple TV+ is assembling quite the cast for its upcoming Cape Fear series, as Patrick Wilson is set to join Javier Bardem and Amy Adams.
Wilson will play Tom Bowden, an attorney married to Anna (Adams), a fellow lawyer. Based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald, Cape Fear “will follow what unfolds after killer Max Cady (Bardem) is released from prison and seeks out the Bowdens, whom he blames for his sentence.” The 10-episode series has been described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller which will serve as an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.
Nick Antosca is writing the new Cape Fear series and will also executive produce alongside Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, Alex Hedlund, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey. The genre of mystery has always hung its narrative prerequisites firmly on carefully placed clues and subtleties that clue in or mislead the audience throughout the film so that the reveal of the mystery or guilty party is a shock or surprise. With many classics of the genre, often this can be telegraphed too obvious too early, but the film's cinematic storytelling still holds audiences on the edge of their seats as they await how it plays out.

The horror genre is well-regarded in cinema as the closest thing to a guaranteed money-maker there is, at least where non-ip is concerned. Horror movies in general have a built-in fan base who are always willing (if not eager) to go check out the latest supernatural thriller, throwback slasher, zombie flick, or whatever other scares are in store. However, one of the other staples of the genre is its thriftiness — you don't need a huge budget to make an effective and successful horror movie, and that in turn makes it more possible for the movie to be successful at the box office. Although most horror movies turn a healthy profit, you don't tend to see too many reaching the same lofty financial heights as the average multi-million dollar blockbuster.
The closest horror movies come to earning billions of dollars is when they're part of a successful franchise, and sometimes not even then.

What do Bill Skarsgård, Justin Long, Daniel Kaluuya, and Patrick Wilson all have in common? They are all considered "Scream Kings." This is a term for an actor who is particularly known for their roles in the horror genre. Typically, they will be the characters that you directly root for against the antagonist of the piece, such as Kaluuya's Chris in Get Out and Wilson's Ed Warren in The Conjuring. Though Skarsgård's Scream King status is arguably gained more from the number of monsters he has played rather than his more sympathetic roles in films like Barbarian, it is also a testament to how variety can play a big part in what makes a Scream King.

Patrick Wilson took to Instagram to honor co-star Vera Farmiga for ten years of memories. The Conjuring universe was built on their characters Ed and Lorraine Warren, and it's only fitting that the series ended with a homage to the actors' onscreen marriage. Wilson and Farmiga starred in three Conjuring installments to date, and The Conjuring: Last Rites is their final movie together. Wilson marked his last day making that film by honoring everyone responsible for the thriving franchise, which will likely explore plots beyond the mainline series after Last Rites. Based on the real demonologists of the same name, fans have lovingly embraced Farmiga and Wilson's portrayals of Lorraine and Ed Warren, who they have faithfully portrayed in The Conjuring Universe since it started in 2013. King’s quill, dipped in the ink of the supernatural & the macabre, has sketched out thrilling geographies where cars like Christine (from his same-titled novel) develop deadly minds of their own, and hotels like The Overlook from The Shining become characters as complex as any human.

The characters in The Conjuring franchise, including The Nun and Annabelle, are interconnected through various films, with ties to the main Conjuring movies. Valak, the demon nun, is the main antagonist in The Conjuring 2 and The Nun, and there are Easter eggs and theories that suggest a deeper connection between Valak and Malthus, the demon possessing the Annabelle doll in the Annabelle movies. Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are revealed to be part of the same bloodline, explaining why both characters are targeted by demons like Valak and Annabelle. The characters played by Taissa and Vera Farmiga are also related in the franchise.
The expansive universe within The Conjuring franchise is broad, with tons of characters that interconnect within a number of films, including making connections between movies like The Nun and Annabelle. This is typical, as all the movies tie back to one of the Conjuring films. The Curse of La Llorona...

Despite the portrayal in The Conjuring 3, Ed Warren did not actually have a heart attack during the exorcism of David Glatzel. The movie takes creative liberties with the real Warren cases, including the involvement of a fraudulent satanist in the plot. Ed Warren did later suffer from heart issues, leading to his eventual death in 2006 at the age of 79.
Patrick Wilson's character is almost killed by a demon in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and many wonder if the real Ed Warren had a heart attack when working on a case. Directed by Michael Chaves, the third movie in the main saga of the Conjuring universe is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor), who in 1981 pleaded not guilty to murdering his landlord on the basis that he was possessed by a demon at the time and not in control of his actions.

The Warrens' Occult Museum inspired The Conjuring movies with real haunted objects like Annabelle and cursed samurai props. Items like a haunted piano and vampire coffins in the museum fuel the terror-filled world of paranormal investigations. Objects like a Satanic idol and a shadow doll hold creepy legends, creating an atmosphere of cursed mysteries.
Ed and Lorraine's now-closed Warrens' Occult Museum includes some items found by the two legendary paranormal investigators, helping inspire The Conjuring movies. In real life, the married couple formed their own society, the New England Society for Psychic Research (Nespr), and investigated some of the most terrifying hauntings ever. This includes the Amityville hauntings, the Perron family hauntings, and the Enfield poltergeist case. It's their findings while investigating these cases that led to the Warrens' museum.

Ghost hunters will find more than they bargained for on Halloween in upcoming genre-bender The Unearthly. Per Deadline, the indie sci-fi horror comedy has found its lead in star and producer Patrick Warburton.
Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye) is set to direct The Unearthly for Centerboro Productions, with production scheduled to begin early this year in Connecticut.
In The Unearthly, “a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a ‘Halloween Special’ ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder,...

Patrick Wilson's many appearances in James Wan films have made the duo one of the most formidable pairings of The Conjuring Universe.
Cinephiles likely have their own exhaustive lists of favorite Hollywood pairings. Movie history also lists a long line of directors who prefer working with certain actors, like Quentin Tarantino with Zoë Bell, Martin Scorsese with Robert De Niro, or James Wan with Patrick Wilson. That last pairing is unmistakable to fans of The Conjuring Universe, and in a /Film interview, Wan admits he does enjoy working with Wilson on movie projects.

Some pretty famous actor/director pairings have defined a sizable portion of classic cinema over the years. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro; the Coen brothers and Frances McDormand; Guillermo del Toro and Doug Jones. It's a legendary list and one that should most certainly include James Wan and Patrick Wilson. Dating back to 2010's smash hit "Insidious," the duo have worked together on six of Wan's directorial efforts (and many more that he's produced). That sixth collaboration came in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which is just now making its way to theaters after several long delays.
But why is it that Wan continues to cast Wilson in his films? In fairness, this is a sequel and Wilson's Orm is a big part of the story. Even so, the two clearly want to keep working with one another. /Film's own Jacob Hall recently spoke with Wan in anticipation...

Robins criticizes The Conjuring for how quickly the Warrens jump to the conclusion that a house is haunted by demons, despite other possible explanations. Other entries in The Conjuring Universe also lack realism to their paranormal events, deviating from real-life events to fit into a larger cinematic universe while sacrificing accuracy. Despite its lack of realism, The Conjuring is still highly regarded as one of the scariest demonic films of all time, and even Robins enjoys it.
Paranormal expert Danny Robins breaks down the unrealistic way in which the Warren hunt for demons in The Conjuring. Based on the real-life case of the Perron haunting in Rhode Island, the movie follows couple Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate the family's home. The movie is best known for starting a shared universe of horror films, some of which are entirely fictionalized while others are loosely based on real events.

Netflix originals have always been the biggest draw for the streaming juggernaut, and their true crime documentary offerings have been so popular that they've been spoofed by both "Black Mirror," and the brilliant satirical mockumentary series "American Vandal." Released just in time for the Halloween season, the latest documentary, "The Devil on Trial," has been dominating the top 10 charts across the globe. The film is the latest from Peabody Award-winning and three-time BAFTA-nominated British writer, director, and producer, Chris Holt, and tackles the first and only time demonic possession was used as a defense in an American murder trial. Taking place in 1981, the trial made headlines as the "Devil Made Me Do It" case, as 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed that he was not guilty in the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono, because he was possessed at the time of the killing.

New Line’s The Nun II, one of the few bright spots at the fall box office rocked by the actors strikes, will hit Max on Oct. 27. That premiere date is after the pic’s 50-day theatrical window.
The Michael Chaves directed sequel in the Conjuring universe opened to $32.6M and through yesterday counts $84.4M at the domestic box office and over $258M worldwide. The movie ruled the top of the box office for three weekends in a row and returned Warner Bros to the post-Labor Day horror launchpad they first made rich with the 2017 feature take of Stephen King’s It.

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.
Here’s how to watch all the “Conjuring” movies in chronological order, all the way back to the Dark Ages.
The Nun (2018): 1300s, 1952, 1971 The Nun (Warner Bros.)

The biggest mystery of The Nun is the potential connection between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren, as both characters fight the demon Valak and encounter Frenchie. The movie hints at the possibility that Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are the same person, but there are inconsistencies regarding their timelines and roles as nuns. Alternatively, the theory suggests that Irene and Lorraine may be sisters, sharing a bloodline connected to Saint Lucy, as revealed in The Nun 2.
Perhaps the biggest mystery of The Nun is the possible connection between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren, who is played by Vera Farmiga. It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

The Nun II director, Michael Chaves, connects the timeline of The Nun and The Conjuring by referencing a failed exorcism performed on Frenchie, which ultimately leads to his death. Chaves suggests that Valak's return to Frenchie's body is "open to interpretation," but points out a significant look shared between Irene and Frenchie at the end of the movie that implies a lingering spirit. The post-credit scene in The Nun II, featuring Ed Warren receiving a call from Father Gordon, suggests a deeper connection between The Conjuring and The Nun II, hinting at possible links in future movies.
According to The Nun II director Michael Chaves, one of the movie's final Frenchie scenes intentionally weaves in The Conjuring's timeline. Released in 2018, the original Nun acts as a prequel to The Conjuring and sees Father Burke (Demián Bichir), Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), and Romanian local Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) investigate a demonic presence in an abbey.

The following contains spoilers for The Nun II, now playing in theaters.
The Conjuring has been the most successful horror franchise for over a decade, and the hits keep on coming. The Conjuring spinoff movie The Nun II is looking to be another box office slam dunk for the series, and it's also largely seen as an improvement over its predecessor. Unfortunately, it also highlights a major opportunity that the James Wan property keeps missing.
One of the most iconic horror movie monsters is the werewolf, which hasn't been seen in the Conjuring Universe. That's despite there being so many similar concepts utilized, not to mention Ed and Lorraine Warren supposedly dealing with such a beast in real-life. The Nun II also features a werewolf in all but name, but the franchise may be running out of time to use an actual howling menace.

The Nun 2 is not based on any true stories, allowing the filmmakers to create a fictional plot that enhances the scare factor and character development. While The Nun 2 is not based on true events, it does have connections to real-life demons, people, and mythological figures, adding an interesting element to the film. The paranormal world of nun demons, exorcisms, and possessions depicted in The Nun 2 is entirely fictional, but there are some realistic elements inspired by cases encountered by Ed and Lorraine Warren.

All hail the reign of “The Conjuring” universe.
The James Wan-produced horror franchise marks its next installment with “The Nun 2,” the sequel to the 2018 film “The Nun.”
Taissa Farmiga reprises her role as Sister Irene, who has an unholy connection to a demon possessing the body of a fellow nun, played by Bonnie Aarons. Demián Bichir returns as Father Burke, along with guide Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), as the Romanian monastery is exorcised. “Euphoria” and “The Last of Us” star Storm Reid joins the franchise for “The Nun 2,” along with Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose Downey.
The sequel follows Sister Irene (Farmiga) as she once again comes face to face with the demonic Valak in 1956. “The Nun 2” is written by “M3GAN” screenwriter Akela Cooper and “Fear the Walking Dead” writers Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing.
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” helmer Michael Chaves directs the Warner Bros. feature.

In celebration of the release of the fifth chapter in the franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, franchise star Patrick Wilson stops by Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast to discuss not only his journey in the role of Josh Lambert but on his transition into the Director’s chair as well.
The Insidious series has been a terrifying adventure exploring various central characters and timelines since the original film arrived in theaters 13 years ago. This latest tale picks up right after the events of 2013’s Chapter 2. Patrick had this to say when asked if he had any concept of where the Lambert’s story could go moving forward.
“I have no idea! I don’t. You know, the tag at the end of the movie, if you stay thru the credits, was as much to show that you need a balance of light and dark, you know, and clearly, you guys work at Bloody Disgusting,...
