The genre of mystery has always hung its narrative prerequisites firmly on carefully placed clues and subtleties that clue in or mislead the audience throughout the film so that the reveal of the mystery or guilty party is a shock or surprise. With many classics of the genre, often this can be telegraphed too obvious too early, but the film's cinematic storytelling still holds audiences on the edge of their seats as they await how it plays out.

However, one of the other staples of the genre is its thriftiness — you don't need a huge budget to make an effective and successful horror movie, and that in turn makes it more possible for the movie to be successful at the box office. Although most horror movies turn a healthy profit, you don't tend to see too many reaching the same lofty financial heights as the average multi-million dollar blockbuster.

The closest horror movies come to earning billions of dollars is when they're part of a successful franchise, and sometimes not even then.

The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

The James Wan-produced horror franchise marks its next installment with “The Nun 2,” the sequel to the 2018 film “The Nun.”

Taissa Farmiga reprises her role as Sister Irene, who has an unholy connection to a demon possessing the body of a fellow nun, played by Bonnie Aarons. Demián Bichir returns as Father Burke, along with guide Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), as the Romanian monastery is exorcised. “Euphoria” and “The Last of Us” star Storm Reid joins the franchise for “The Nun 2,” along with Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose Downey.
