- His father had immigrated from France; his mother was from Belgium.
- He tried to join the Navy at 16 during World War II, but was turned away. The following year he enlisted, and spent three years in the Pacific theater. After the war, he finished high school and worked as a welder.
- In Los Angeles, he worked at movie studios, first sweeping stages, then as a welder and carpenter. He became part of the creative team for various films, designing special effects and stunts for car crashes, exploding bridges, gun battles, and other scenes.
- He had two sons: Dan and Jon; and a stepdaughter, Charlotte Brooks with his wife, Carolyn.
