Peter Kwong, Who Played Rain In ‘Big Trouble in Little China,’ Dies at 73
Image
Peter Kwong, who played Rain, one of the three martial arts warlocks in John Carpenter’s 1986 action classic “Big Trouble in Little China,” has died in his sleep Tuesday night, according to one of his reps. He was 73. No further details were shared.

Kwong, a Sacramento, Calif. native, began his career as a TV actor in the late-’70s and ’80s with stints in shows like “The A-Team,” “Wonder Woman,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Miami Vice,” “The Greatest American Hero,” “Cagney & Lacey,” “Dynasty,” “MacGyver” and “227.”

His most well known role came with the 1986 release of “Big Trouble in Little China,” in which he played Rain, one of three super-powered martial artists known as the Three Storms. He starred alongside Kim Cattrall and frequent Carpenter collaborator Kurt Russell. Although the film has since emerged as a cult classic, it was a commercial failure at the time of its release,...

Jurassic World Rebirth Will Bring Back The Best Part Of Jurassic Park 3
Image
Today is officially a big news day for the most annoying person you know. While most other blockbusters tend to take over the spotlight, from galaxies far away to godlike superheroes and everything in between, let us never forget that there exists a passionate and extremely nerdy fanbase obsessed with the coolest movie monsters of them all: dinosaurs. The recently-completed "Jurassic World" trilogy may have put a slight damper on things for us -- in case you have chosen to forget, the critically-derided "Dominion" decided to spend an unseemly amount of its runtime on a plague of giant locusts, for some reason -- but we're back and ready for more kaiju-sized punishment. The franchise shows no signs of slowing down, and for once that doesn't sound like a threat.

Vanity Fair has the scoop on several jaw-dropping surprises in store for us in the upcoming seventh film in the "Jurassic Park" franchise,...

"...'Eric Brooks' was born in a whorehouse in the Soho neighborhood of London, England in 1929. His mother 'Tara Brooks', was a prostitute at ‘Madame Vanity’s’ brothel.

“When Tara experienced severe labor complications, a doctor was summoned, who was in actuality the vampire 'Deacon Frost’.

“However, he inadvertently passed along certain enzymes in his own blood to the infant. This resulted in Eric's 'quasi-vampiric' abilities, including a greatly prolonged lifespan and the ability to sense supernatural creatures, as well as an immunity to complete vampirism.

P

"Eric grew up living at Madame Vanity's, and at age nine, returning home from school, he saw an old man being attacked by three vampires.

10 Best Sensei Masters In Martial Arts Movies
Image
Some of the best martial arts movies feature an enlightened sensei with unmatched skill, which takes a struggling protagonist and helps guide them through their training and become their best self. While many of these films obviously focus on the leading role and their own journeys of self-mastery, the sensei masters are an integral component that deserves more spotlight. The sensei don't just put them through days, months, or even years of dedicated training to learn epic finishing moves to win a single fight, but to learn the skills to transform their lives as a whole.

Some of the most influential martial arts films, such as The Karate Kid and Kill Bill, showcase the incredible yet intense bond that forms between a master and student. The legendary Mr. Miyagi's laid back and unassuming 'wax on, wax off' produced one of the best training montages of all time, or the...

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror trailer: Doug Jones is Count Orlok in a remix of the silent classic
The Witch (2015)
Back in 2015, it was announced that The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers (who was, at that time, had only made The Witch) was planning to remake F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). It took Eggers several years to get to Nosferatu, though, and we’ll finally have the chance to see his take on the concept when his movie reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th. About eight and half months after Eggers’ Nosferatu was first announced, we heard that filming had begun on a separate Nosferatu remake. Or, as the director referred to it, a remix. That was David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror… and that movie has now made its way out into the world! Fisher’s movie is available for purchase on Prime Video, going for the price of $4.99. It will also be released through Apple TV tomorrow,...

Original Avenger making a Marvel comeback for potential goodbye project
Image
The Avengers have been the glue that has held the Marvel Cinematic Universe together since their debut as a team in 2012. The franchise had certainly been doing well prior to that, with standalone movies focused on Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor holding their own at the box office. But it was when The Avengers brought those characters (plus Hawkeye and Black Widow) together, that the MCU achieved its first of many billion-dollar success stories.

The fourth film in the Avengers saga, Avengers: Endgame, brought about the end of an era for the Infinity Saga, ending the long-running Thanos arc and gifting fans with one of the greatest cinematic battles of all time. The events of the 2019 movie have rippled through the franchise ever since, particularly because three of the original six Avengers were taken off the board in that film. That leaves Hawkeye, Hulk, and Thor...

Dune director Denis Villeneuve explains why he's out after Dune: Part Three
Image
Denis Villeneuve has gained a lot of notoriety over the past few years as the director of the Dune movies. Together, Dune: Parts One and Two adapt the whole of Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi classic about a young man — Paul Atreides — who moves to a desert planet with his family and ends the novel as the emperor of the damn universe.

Herbert actually wrote five more Dune novels after the original (and then his son wrote 17 more after that). Villeneuve is currently at work on adapting the second Dune book, Dune Messiah, into a movie, although after that it sounds like he's eager to leave behind Arrakis. The guy had basically no break between making Parts One and Two, and as meaningful as making the Dune movies has been for him.. "That's done and that's finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it's not like a trilogy.

‘Action Jackson’ Blu-ray Review (Warner Archive)
Image
Stars: Carl Weathers, Craig T. Nelson, Vanity, Sharon Stone, Tom Wilson, Bill Duke, Robert Davi, Jack Thibeau, Mary Ellen Trainor, Ed O’Ross | Written by Robert Reneau | Directed by Craig R. Baxley

Action Jackson (1988), directed by Craig R. Baxley, stands as a remarkable fusion of the blaxploitation genre’s legacy and the dynamic, explosive nature of 1980s action cinema. While it may not reach the iconic status of blaxploitation classics like Shaft or Super Fly, Action Jackson offers a distinctive experience that both honours its roots and embraces contemporary action movie tropes.

The film centres on Jericho “Action” Jackson (Carl Weathers), a Detroit police sergeant demoted due to his overzealous tactics. Jackson finds himself embroiled in a plot masterminded by industrial magnate Peter Dellaplane (Craig T. Nelson), who aims to seize control of a powerful union. Weathers delivers a charismatic and physically commanding performance, embodying the tough, no-nonsense hero archetype essential...

Jenna Ortega is preparing for Wednesday season 2, says every episode will be memorable
Image
Season 2 of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday is expected to start filming in Ireland (season 1 was shot in Romania) sometime in late April, and during an interview with Vanity Fair the show’s star Jenna Ortega confirmed that she is about to get ready to return to the world of Wednesday Addams, revealing that she has been reading the season scripts recently – and promising that every episode of the new season will have something that will make it stand out and be memorable.

Vanity Fair asked Ortega about a previous quote where she said Wednesday season 2 will be more episodic, with each episode coming off like a standalone movie, and that it would lean further into horror. She responded, “I’ve just been reading scripts. By the time we actually start shooting, it will have been over two years since we wrapped. So internally, mentally, I’m like,...

Carl Weathers: 5 Great Roles (Outside of Rocky)
Image
Many of us were dismayed to learn that the great Carl Weathers had passed away, especially with him being amid a terrific career resurgence thanks to his ongoing role on The Mandalorian. Of course, he’ll always be best known as Apollo Creed, with Sylvester Stallone (noticeably emotional) saying in his tribute that he could “have never accomplished what we did with Rocky without him.” Indeed, Apollo was integral to the films, with him being the sympathetic, honourable antagonist in the first two films and then a stalwart best friend and mentor in the third film before dying in the fourth. His legacy helped spawn a whole other franchise, the Creed films, which are still going strong to this day.

Nevertheless, there was more to Carl Weathers beyond the Rocky films, so we thought it might be appropriate to look at some of his other iconic parts on JoBlo, which deserve a lot of praise.

Francis Ford Coppola praises his nephew, Nicolas Cage, after seeing his performances in Pig and Dream Scenario
Image
While Nicolas Cage is loved by the internet for his many meme material, the actor is equally loved for his genuinely acclaimed acting performances. He has been in some of the most beloved movies of yesteryear, with films like The Rock, Face/Off, Con Air and the National Treasure movies. While Cage has been in movies of varying quality due to his need to pay off some of his notorious expenses, he has been able to maintain his artistic integrity by starring in movies like Pig and the recent Dream Scenario. He is set to be seen in the upcoming Longlegs, which just released a chilling teaser.

It was also those recent movies that had compelled Cage’s famous uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, to give his nephew a shoutout on his Instagram. Coppola posted a picture of Cage’s unrecognizable look as his Dream Scenario character and wrote in the post,...

Review: John Frankenheimer’s 52 Pick-Up on Kl Studio Classics Special Edition Blu-ray
John Frankenheimer
John Frankenheimer’s 52 Pick-Up is one of the better of the willfully decadent American thrillers from the 1980s that are preoccupied with drugs, guns, strippers, prostitutes, money, and the men who kill each other attempting to obtain them. Though this film isn’t generally mentioned in discussions of the adaptations of Elmore Leonard’s work, the crime master’s imprint is felt on the scenes that routinely threaten to elevate 52 Pick-Up from a sleazy, well-paced time-killer to an authentically good movie. Leonard’s sense of humor is under-emphasized, but his satirical notion of crime as a business beholden to the same petty political trivialities as more “legitimate” enterprises is explicitly accounted for.

When self-made industrialist Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) is blackmailed by a couple of vicious hoods, he remains unflappable while amusingly entering into negotiations with them over the terms of his exploitation. Though this is never fully acknowledged in Frankenheimer’s film,...

Channing Tatum Really Didn’t Want to Be in the G.I. Joe Movies
Image
“G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force.” So declares the voiceover in the theme song for G.I. Joe, the cartoon show that dominated after-school televisions in the 1980s. And by that criteria, Channing Tatum seems like the perfect choice to play Duke, leader of the Joes. Is he highly trained? Of course! Have you seen Step Up or Magic Mike? Is he daring? Anyone who caught his cameo in This is the End would give a resounding “yes”!

But the song also tells us that G.I. Joe “never gives up” and is “always there.” On that account, Tatum might fall a little bit short.

Recently, Tatum agreed to strap on a lie detector and answer questions for Vanity Fair. And to test the actor’s resolve, Vanity Fair went right for the tough questions: “You played Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

‘Drag Race Canada vs The World 2×02’ Review
Image
Despite having only competed in her original season under a year ago, Vanity Milan returned with a vengeance in the opening episode of Drag Race Canada vs The World! During the musical challenge, she delivered a powerful message about the injustices Poc queens experience including calling out the BBC media team who recently came under fire for putting the wrong name of a black queen during one of the exit interviews of Drag Race UK season four! During the runway section of the episode, she decided to showcase an incredibly elegant, golden outfit made from duvets which looked absolutely incredible on her! After finding herself in the top two alongside Rita Baga, Vanity delivered a lip-sync performance that utilised every one of her mind-blowing dance skills that claimed her place as the overall winner of the episode. Rita decided to channel a much more comedic performance also mimicking the incredible stunts of her opponent.

Who Got The PorkChop Chop On Canada's Drag Race: Canada Vs. The World?
Image
On Drag Race UK vs. The World, Lemon got the PorkChop Chop; however, one Canada's Drag Race: Canada vs. The World queen will take her place as the PorkChop Lounge's latest fresh meat. The newest addition is joined not only by Lemon but by over 40 competitors from the RuPaul's Drag Race franchise. The roster's most notable "PorkChop" includes We're Here Emmy award-winner Shangela Wadley, fan-favorite "Vanjie" Mateo, the vibe of Vegas Derrick Barry, meme queen Jasmine Masters, and the late Cherry Valentine.

On the premiere episode of Canada's Drag Race: Canada Vs. The World, the two top queens, Rita Baga and Vanity Milan, lip-synced for their "motherpucking" legacy. In a petty performance of Anjuli's "Brand New B***h," Vanity emerges victorious, holding the decision for elimination. She must choose between two Canadian counterparts: Kendall Gender and Stephanie Prince. Kendall, Canada's Drag Race season 2 runner-up, has a spectacular entrance look and...

‘Terror Train (2022)’ Review
Image
Stars: Matias Garrido, Corteon Moore, Robyn Alomar, Noah Parker, Dakota Jamal Wellman, Tim Rozon, Mary Walsh, Emma Elle Paterson, Tori Barban | Written by Ian Carpenter, Aaron Martin | Directed by Philippe Gagnon

Released in 1980 the original Terror Train was one of the many slashers to be released in the wake of Friday the 13th and Halloween. Benefiting from the presence of that film’s star, Jamie Lee Curtis it did well at the box office and has built a following over the years. There was even an attempt to remake it in the early 2000s, but that ended up morphing into Train, a film that sucked even by torture porn standards.

Since the original was a favourite of mine, I was initially interested when I heard it had been remade and was scheduled for an October release. However, when I heard Tubi was involved, a lot of that interest faded. As...

Elizabeth Olsen ‘Never Met’ John Krasinski Despite ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Battle: ‘I Don’t Know Him’
Image
Spoilers below for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

Perhaps the most shocking moment in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is when Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch kills off John Krasinski’s Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic. The actor exits the film not even 10 minutes after making his Marvel Cinematic Debut as the leader of the Fantastic Four. What was it like facing off against Krasinski on set? Don’t ask Olsen.

“I don’t know him,” Olsen revealed while taking the Vanity Fair lie detector test. The question was whether or not John Krasinski is the smartest man on Earth, a reference to the same title Mr. Fantastic holds in the comic books. Olsen added, “I would never assume that an actor would be the smartest man alive.”

When Vanity Fair asked Olsen if she didn’t know Krasinski, the actor responded, “I don’t think so.

Howard Stern Rips Will Smith After Chris Rock Oscars Slap: “Obviously, He’s Got Emotional Problems”
Image
“Obviously, he’s got emotional problems,” said Howard Stern on this SiriusXM show today about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars last night. “Where’s security? This is a live television event. Not one person came out, because he’s Will Smith.”

“He decided he’s gonna take matters into his own hands — at a time when the world is at war. Bad timing, man. I mean, calm your f***ing a** down.”

“It shows where we are as human beings,” said co-host Robin Quivers. “Like, you can’t even say something in a room without a war breaking out.”

“This is a sign of great mental illness when you can’t control your impulse,” said Stern, who has been open about his own emotional issues.”

He later added about Smith: “He didn’t think twice about what he was about to do. Now that’s crazy, when...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 10 recap: Did Kitty Scott-Claus, Ella Vaday or Krystal Versace snatch the crown in ‘Grand Finale’?
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” came to a conclusion this week when RuPaul Charles crowned the third UK drag superstar. In last week’s eighth episode, RuPaul Charles was so over the moon with the top four’s performances in the space-themed parody film “Bra Wars” that she couldn’t bear to send any of them home. That’s why this week all of the top four are back with another chance to crawl their way into the final three.

On Thursday’s final episode, Kitty Scott-Claus, Krystal Versace, and Ella Vaday rang in the holiday season with their own verses to Ru’s new holiday song “Hey Sis, It’s Christmas!” To find out which of the three proved they have all the charisma, uniqueness, nerve, talent and holiday cheer Ru was looking for read our recap of the “Grand Finale” below:

‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK 3×10’ Review
Image
We have finally made it to the finale episode of season three of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, where one of the top three queens will join icons such as The Vivienne (winner of season one) and Lawerence Chaney (winner of season two) by becoming the next UK drag superstar! Last weeks episode saw the return of all of the eliminated queens, who all sat in the audience of the roast challenge. We saw both Ella and Kitty both perform amazing sets that were full of funny and entertaining jokes, with Ella snatching the win and claiming her fourth win of this season. In all honesty, if I was in Ru Paul shoes I would have probably picked Kitty, as I thought her runway was of a much higher quality but it was clearly a very close competition. On the other end of the spectrum we had Krystal in...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 9 recap: Top 4 play devil and the angel in ‘The Pearly Gates Roast’

“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” continued this week with another installment of the hit spin-off from across the pond. In last week’s eighth episode, RuPaul Charles was so over the moon with the top four’s performances in the space-themed parody film “Bra Wars” that she couldn’t bear to send any of them home. That’s why this week all of the top four are back with another chance to crawl their way into the final three.

On Thursday’s ninth episode, Kitty Scott-Claus, Krystal Versace, Vanity Milan and Ella Vaday take to the stage in a roast of themselves in a heavenly-themed comedy challenge. Read below for our recap of episode 9 to find out what devilish things the top four had to say about Scarlett Harlett, Choriza May, River Medway, Charity Kase, Veronica Green, Victoria Scone, Elektra Fence and Anubis in “The Pearly Gates Roast”:

‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK 3×08’ Review
Image
I have to admit that I personally did not enjoy last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK! The queens competed in the first-ever Fugly (friend you got to love yourself) ball but for the first time ever the series took a much more game show approach to the episode which had the queens racing against the clock. On Fashion Photo Review series on YouTube, where two drag race queens from previous seasons review the outfits the queens wear in each episode, drag race season 1 queen Cheryl Hole and season thirteen US queen Denali (who I recently saw perform in a local bar with the review of that event available here) talked about how difficult this category is to judge. They discussed how the queens had to simultaneously look good and ugly and so deciding who was at the top or bottom of the challenge was insanely difficult.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 8 recap: Top 4 are out of this world in ‘Bra Wars,’ but are any of them out of their league?
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” continued this week with another installment of the hit spin-off from across the pond. In last week’s seventh episode, the queens brought fugly back in a three-look beauty pageant celebrating the pretty side of ugly thing. After becoming the last queen to earn a winner’s badge, Kitty Scott-Claus finally came out on top, but Vanity Milan and Scarlett Harlett hit the bottom for the third time. Vanity made a strong case for lip sync assassin of the season in her victory over Scarlett, but has she done enough to escape the bottom a fourth time?

On Thursday’s eighth episode, the top four are directed by Michelle Visage in a space adventure-themed overacting challenge. Read below for our recap of episode 8 to find out who among them are queens of the universe and if RuPaul Charles sends any of them into deep space in...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 6 recap: Which queens bring star power to ‘Snatch Game’?
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” continued this week with another installment of the hit spin-off from across the pond. In last week’s fifth episode, RuPaul Charles asked the queens to name the queen that is most deserving of going home, where Scarlett Harlett learned that most of her friends think her head is no longer in the game. Minutes later, Scarlett took on Charity Kase in the lip sync for the second straight week, this time sending her home.

On Thursday’s sixth episode, we see the fallout of the singling out of Scarlett play out in two classic challenges: Reading Is Fundamental and Snatch Game. Read below for our recap of episode 6 to find out in “Snatch Game”:

Following Charity’s elimination, River Medway got right to the point as the girls sat down to decompress. River asked straight away whether or not anyone thought Charity won the lip sync.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 4 recap: Which queen makes their big drag exit in ‘Big Drag Energy’?
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” is back and the queens of season 3 have all the charisma, uniqueness, nerve or talent you could ask for. In last week’s third episode, Veronica Green made an earlier-than-anticipated exit from the competition once again. After devoting all her time helping her peers during a camping couture design challenge, Veronica’s own creation was too much of a mess to impress the judges. She lost in a lip sync against Vanity Milan, who fell in the bottom two for the second straight week, while Scarlett Harlett was able to break Krystal Versace‘s two-week winning streak with a win of her own.

On Thursday’s fourth episode, the queens form two girl groups to test whether a “top pop” or “power bottom” mix of a new song has more big drag energy, all in front of living legend Baby Spice. Read below for our recap...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 3 recap: Winter is coming so snuggle up with the queens in the ‘Great Outdoors’
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” is back and the queens of season 3 have all the charisma, uniqueness, nerve or talent you could ask for. In last week’s second episode, Krystal Versace reigned supreme once again, going two for two in wins so far as the top performer in a “Dragoton” musical and dance challenge. Sadly, Elektra Fence also went two for two, falling into the bottom in back to back weeks and ultimately being sent home by her good friend Vanity Milan in the lip sync.

On today’s third episode, the remaining queens snuggle up on the runway in freshly-made garments constructed from sleeping bags and blankets in a dreaded unconventional materials sewing challenge. Read below for our recap of episode 3 to find out which queen winter came for in ‘Great Outdoors’:

At the end of last week’s episode, RuPaul Charles asked Victoria Scone to exit the...

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ 3 episode 2 recap: It’s all balls, bikes and babies as the queens get fit in ‘Dragoton’
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” is back and after an iconic second season, the queens of season 3 are pulling out all the stops to live up to their predecessors. In last week’s premiere, River Medway left host RuPaul Charles in stitches as she shimmied down the runway with a traffic cone on her head pretending to be a famous pointing statue from her hometown Medway. Ru didn’t select River as one of the top queens of the week though–instead hailing fashion darling Krystal Versace and the first Afab queen in series history Victoria Scone as the best of the bunch. Krystal beat Victoria in a first ever top 2 showdown lip sync, followed by a traditional Lsfyl between the bottom 2 that resulted in Elektra Fence sending Anubis home.

On today’s second episode, the 11 remaining queens serve body-ody-ody as instructors in Ru’s latest business venture, Dragoton, a virtual fitness company.

Mick Jagger at an event for Boardwalk Empire (2010)
How Charlie Watts Defined The Rolling Stones’ Sound: A Musical Exploration
Mick Jagger at an event for Boardwalk Empire (2010)
Charlie Watts’ drums were the foundation of The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote the songs, got the most press, and were the most visible members, but Watts dictated the style. Besides being named to Vanity Fair’s “Style” Hall of Fame, Watts kept the Stones’ sound intact and impeccable, regardless of whatever the songwriters brought into the studio.

There is an incident recounted in the 2010 memoir Life, by Richards and James Fox, about a mid-1980s party which hits the nail on the head. Mick drunk-dialed Charlie’s hotel room in the middle of the night to invite him to a party which was raging. Jagger demanded to know “Where’s my drummer?” Watts showed up. He’d showered, shaved, put on a suit and a tie, beautiful shoes, freshly shined, and “you could smell his cologne.” He walked up to the Rolling Stones’ frontman, grabbed him by the lapel,...

Paradise Lagoon (1957)
Island Hopping
Paradise Lagoon (1957)
Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. A trio of island-related movies are on the card this week to help you escape the pandemic virtually, if you’re not ready to brave an airline flight just yet.

Paradise Lagoon is the name used in the U.S. for the release of the 1957 British-American film, The Admirable Crichton. The screenplay was based on a play written in the early 20th century by J.M. Barrie, the guy behind Peter Pan. The main character in the movie is a butler. He lacks Peter Pan’s ability to fly, but he has the added advantage of being able to serve drinks.

The story of Paradise Lagoon centers on a group of upper-crust castaways who try to escape scandal on a yacht and end up shipwrecked. It’s sort of like Gilligan’s Island,...
